Hawke's Bay entertainer jailed ---------------------------------- From 'Hawkes Bay Today' dated Thursday 17th February 2000 Man jailed for sexual abuse A Hawke's Bay entertainer has been sentenced to nine months' jail for sex offences Involving two girls aged 11 and 15. The man, aged 39, appeared in the Hastings District Court yesterday. He had previously pleaded guilty to three charges of indecency assault and one of inducing the younger of the girls to commit an indecent act on him. The offences were committed between September 1, 1996, and the end of February last year. Sad about Doug Henning ---------------------------------- Message from Ross Skiffington Sad about Doug Henning. Here is a copy of a notice I sent to EQ regarding his death. You might not know but The Magic Show was my first major musical in Australia and it so happened to have magic in it. How convenient. Dear Bruce, I am quite shocked by the news of the death of Doug Henning. I never met Doug but I felt a distant affinity because in 1975, for the Australian season of The Magic Show, I played Goldfarb the agent and understudied the role of the Magician. The Magician was played by Larry Anderson, who worked for Mark Wilson. The production also starred Jon Finlayson as Feldman, the older magician. Jon made the film of "The Magic Show" in Canada with Doug. Maybe the film will be released now. Every Thursday at rehearsals I had the opportunity to play with the fantastic John Gaughan illusions created for the show and act out the role of the magician. Needless to say it fired my passion & enthusiasm for magic and I have never looked back. Larry never missed a performance. I believe The Magic Show was a turning point for many magicians and for also for audiences with its fresh approach to the art of magic. It was a great time and a great show to be part of. Thank you Doug! Vale. Magically, Ross Skiffington ---------------------------------- 8. NEW YORK (AP) -- Doug Henning ---------------------------------- Message sent by Burns Scandrett Magician Doug Henning dead at 52 February 8, 2000 NEW YORK (AP) -- Doug Henning, who helped revive the popularity of magic as mass entertainment with a series of Broadway shows, television specials and a travelling act, has died. He was 52. Henning had suffered from liver cancer for five months. His office in Toronto said he died Monday in Los Angeles. Born in Winnipeg, Canada, Henning -- recognizable by his trademark long hair and tie-dyed shirts -- became well known in the United States in the 1970s and '80s. His rock musical "The Magic Show" ran on Broadway for more than four years in the 1970s. Audiences flocked to the Cort Theatre to see Henning make women disappear in sections and mix his magic with music and comedy. The attention he won on Broadway helped Henning land an NBC special called "The World of Magic." He recreated Harry Houdini's "Water Torture Escape" before a live audience and ratings were so good that NBC made the show an annual event. The shows won an Emmy award and seven Emmy nominations and made Henning one of the world's best-known magicians. Henning, who had long been fascinated with transcendental meditation, spent his last years working on plans for a transcendental meditation theme park in Niagara Falls, Ontario. ---------------------------------- 9.
