Editors Message ------------------------------------- Message from Alan Watson - The Magic One IBM Ring 160 Day of Magic Had very good feedback about the Day of Magic. Michele and I were unable to attend because of our magic commitments. I was hoping to have released the competition results in last week's e-zine but I did not receive the competition results until Monday. Congratulations to all the award winners. Refer Item 18 for Michael Woolf's review. Remember if you have any magic news drop me a line: alan@watson.co.nz ---------------------------------- 2. Re: Last week article - electronics in magic ---------------------------------- Message from Larry White - Magic Editor SAM - MUM Magazine I am a retired science teacher and was previously employed by the Museum of Science in Boston, Massachusetts (where I live) as the Director of The Theatre of Electrical Science. I receive Alan Watson's newsletter and was delighted to find Malcolm Silerman's of Auckland NZ, post regarding electronics in magic. I too have enjoyed creating magic devices employing electronics. As an example, I am the co-author of the book "Twelve Have Died," which discusses the Bullet Catching trick. While Ben Robinson, the main author, was promoting the book he was invited to perform a Bullet Catch in a Boston theater. Boston has strict regulations regarding firearms in public places so we chose to use blank cartridges (and hired a policeman to be the marksman so there would be authority on hand) but, this required "proof' for the audience that the rounds were real. We chose to hang a lighted electric bulb between the rifle barrel and Ben's mouth (the bare bulb cast dramatic shadows). I had a great time devising a sound-activated relay (triggered by the sound of the blank cartridge) that activated a solenoid that released a "rat trap" mechanism that smashed the bulb. At present I am back into electronic devices for a new project. One that had me stumped UNTIL I READ YOUR POST (In just a few words you solved my problem and I am writing to thank you). Your solution is so simple... one of those "now why didn't I think of that" kind of brilliant ideas. Let me explain... Although you live half way around he world from Fall River, Massachusetts I'll bet you are at least have heard of Lizzie Borden. She committed the "Crime of the Century (the 19th century)" by hacking her mother and father to death with an axe (though it was never proven that she did it and she was acquitted). The house where this occurred is about 30 minutes from where I live. The house is now a (spooky) Bed & Breakfast. Myself, with two magician friends, have developed a Theatrical Séance which will be presented in the Lizzie Borden House starting in late January on weekends, It will be performed by professional actors/actresses under our direction. We have the script, original music and have devised original magic tricks for this. All that remains are collecting and "altering" some of the props. Which brings me to electronics... I am well along in constructing two radio-controlled effects. When the sitters enter the séance room there is a framed photo of Lizzie resting on a small table in the middle of the room. The first "evidence" that an "unknown presence" is here is that this photo unexpectedly falls over. Later, (at the onset of the dark séance) there is one candle burning. Our actress says, "SHE is here..." and the candle instantly snuffs out. Both effects could be done with threads, of course, but the science guy in me tells me to do them with electronics and radio control is the obvious answer. I have all of the mechanisms built and the single channel controls... everything works perfectly... EXCEPT... my solenoids make too much NOISE. Even very quiet solenoids sound like a loud THWACK in a room that is perfectly quiet. What to do? What to do? The problem has been keeping me awake. Then I read your post. One line... "Wayne Rogers uses a hot wire which cuts through nylon cord to release what ever..." BINGO! You just solved my problem!!!!! No noisy solenoid, just a nice quiet relay and a piece of nichrome wire. I RAN to my workshop and tried this. Damn it is good! I can use a powerful spring to tip Lizzie's photo... and hold the spring in place with a TINY loop of monofilament which burns through instantly... SLAM, the photo falls! Next... the wick in the candle goes out because the candle is hollow and the "birthday candle" falls down inside. Again... a bit of monofilament under the small candle can holds it in place until that hot wire cuts through it. Silently! SOOO easy. You have given me THE best way to make radio controlled devices work SILENTLY in a VERY quiet situation. Malcolm, this problem has been driving me crazy and you have solved it for me in one sentence. I HAD to write and thank you. You have given some GREAT information about a subject that intrigues many magicians, but few have any experience with. ------------------------------------- 3. Safe and sound back home - Danny Archer ------------------------------------- Message from Danny Archer (US) I am safe and sound back home in the Mile High City! I just wanted to thank all the great people I met on my recently completed lecture tour of New Zealand (Auckland, Palmerston North, Wellington & Christchurch) and Australia (Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth). Each city I visited had something great to see and do and I only wish I had more time to spend in each place. My hosts and all the people I met made me feel right at home and were very accommodating. I have had many positive comments about my lecture and I would like to thank all those attended the lectures and the two Super Days in Brisbane and Sydney. I am hard at work on my next lecture and I hope to have the chance to return to your cities in a few years and share some more magic with you. If you have any comments on the lecture (positive or negative), please feel free to drop me a line at: magic@dannyarcher.com ------------------------------------- 4. Responding to Clive Court's comments ------------------------------------- Message from Jan & Steve Dacri (USA) Responding to Clive Court's comments, Caesars Magical Empire is slated to remain open at the moment, at least until April, and more than likely, depending upon a lot of factors, could remain open indefinitely. Caaesars does not have a contract with David Copperfield any longer. David told me he now has a contract with MGM Grand. Caesars CLOSED its main showroom, Circus Maximus to make way for a newer better showroom to replace the aging one. Too bad, actually, as many fond memories have gone away with the closing of this historic room. I first performed in Vegas in that showroom, as an opening act to Tom Jones (and I thought all those room keys and ladies undergarments were for me!) I also have a tape done of my numerous "Merv Griffin Show" television appearances in that showroom. AS Earl Nelson said to me yesterday, this year is no different than any of the other years in that the rumours of closure have been going around since the first year. They are still just that. Rumours. They have a nightclub under construction in the old IMAX theatre area (another great attraction gone by the wayside). As I suggested last week, I urge all lovers of magic to contact via letter and email, the Park Place Entertainment management with your comments. Arthur Goldberg's untimely and sudden death last week may influence the decision to keep the place open. He was a lover of magic, but he was only given the bottom line numbers on the place, and as we all know, without promotion, people will not show up. Yes, there was promotion in the beginning, a big budget of misguided, confusing ads that never conveyed a sense of what the heck CME is. We still have hopes that it can be rectified with a new, less costly, clever ad campaign that gets right to the point of the place...an evening of fun, food and magic. Note to Susan Lewin: $75 too expensive? For a 4 course meal (food is really great), all the nectar of the gods you can consume, 2 shows and the great atmosphere "underground" in Caesars? A great value, really. (Perhaps Nick should increase your allowance so you get out more often. Call me when I am back in the Secret Pagoda and I'll sneak you in the back!) I do hope we can convince the management to chance policies and allow for folks to hang around, and even a lesser priced ticket for those who wish to skip the meal. So, everyone, send your cards and letters and phone calls to help save the Empire from extinction. ------------------------------------- 5. Danny Archer - Lecture schedule ------------------------------------- Message from Danny Archer (US) Howdy All. New CEO of Park Place is Tom Gallagher ---------------------------------- Message from Jan & Steve Dacri (USA) He loves magic and may be more receptive to revisiting the concept and attempting to promote it with the changes necessary to increase profits. Emails and Faxes and letters to Mr Gallagher are encouraged from all who love magic. Park Place Entertainment (Caesars World): Telephone 310-278-6688 Address: 9399 Wilshire Blvd. Beverly Hills, CA 90210 Fax: 310-275-3053 URL: www.parkplace.com ---------------------------------- 7. Plan a tour to Australia and New Zealand ---------------------------------- Message from Loch David Crane I'm trying to plan a tour to Australia and New Zealand for Jan-March 2002 and would like some friendly advice from your convenient e-zine readers, please. 1. Are most of the Magic Groups along the west coast of Australia? I can look up IBM and SAM groups but would like to hear of others. I'd appreciate emails from any interested groups that might like a show or lecture. 2. If I ship my 3 wheeled STAR TRIKE into Perth from Germany, can I also ship it from Perth to the Eastern side, and across to NZ? Any companies you can recommend which might bid on those shipping costs? 3. Do any cruise ships serve Australia from California, and do they take vehicles in containers or drive-aboard? 4. Are there any drive-aboard ferries between the countries? How much time and how long is the ocean distance between the two countries? 5. What's your weather like in Jan-March? Is it rainy, snowy, or sunny? I have an open motorcycle and want to cruise in good weather. 6. Can your readers recommend any inexpensive hotels, youth hostels, or fancy hotels that might trade out lodging for entertainment? 7. Are there any managers or booking agents on this list that might place my act, or at least any agencies I can trust to write to by email? 8. Can you really use Vegemite for the Card on Ceiling effect? I'd be happy to hear from any Magicians. Loch David Crane: capnkirk@connectnet.com ---------------------------------- 8. Otago Magic Circle - "get-together" ---------------------------------- Message from Dave Harris (NZ) Just a quick note to let you know that the Otago Magic Circle and the Southland Magic Circle had a great "get-together" on Labour Weekend. Southland's best kept secret was revealed with Invercargill putting on fantastic weather. There was plenty of magic from both Circles and from all ages. Magic was wide ranging from a cups and ball routine (without the aid of alcohol), close-up, a display from Wayne McEwan (Frog Jelly is a valid magic word!) to a close-up act where the young performer suggested that another volunteer might be needed. The Shield competition was close but after a frantic search of Queens Gardens the Otago team came through to recapture the Shield after a stay in the South. Sadly one of our hosts, Ivan Hannah was ill on the Sunday and Monday but Glenys kept us up to date on how he was. ------------------------------------- 9. A reply to Mandy Davis ------------------------------------- Message from Donald Wallace (UK) A reply to Mandy Davis, on the subject of the Fringe shows at the IBM convention. I didn't know the IBM frowned on the Fringe shows. I thought, from what little I know about it that they actually helped. If the IBM wanted to be nasty, all they would need to do is to write into performers/lecturers contracts that the IBM have paid for, the clause that they would perform only for the IBM between certain dates. This would often knock out star performers. Also the Fringe show always gets a good write up in the Budget. Maybe there are things I know nothing of, perhaps I have it all wrong. ---------------------------------- 10. Reading Lady Archer's cat's paws ---------------------------------- Message from Ken Ring (NZ) I have just returned from a busy 5 week tour of the UK during which time I clocked up no less than 20 school shows and was guest performer at the York Maths Fair. While in Britain the Daily Mail decided to serialise our cat book, Pawmistry, co-written with Paul Romhany. I spent a useful (and very lucrative) day reading Lady Archer's cat's paws... I also launched my recently updated-for-UK book Predicting The Weather By The Moon (see predictweather.com)in Glastonbury; was chased by ITV for their 'This Morning' show, gained German publishing rights and found publishers for two brand new books at the Frankfurt Book Fair. Enjoyed lunching with my long time friend Richard Webster at the Fair is itself an annual event! ---------------------------------- 11. Here you will find CYBERWIZARD ---------------------------------- Message from Ben Harris (Aust) We've upgraded the Media T website and would like your opinions. It's here in the Service Centre that you'll find content of value. There is no advertising; this is our way of contributing to the magic culture on the Internet. Here you will find CYBERWIZARD, an experiment with online magic to assist in creating discussion about this fascinating field. Check it out and contribute. So, if you own any of our products, you will find this a place for exploring ideas that you may not have considered. Our FREE TRICKS section should really be called "Complimentary Material." The term FREE is rather crass, but is so "internet." However, unlike most FREE material posted at many sites, the stuff here is a little more substantial. Currently there is a solution to the so called "Crosthwaite Challenge", a fine version of "oil and water" a cool elastic band trick and more. In conjunction with PHOTOLOG, (Mona Santow's Photo Archives) I believe we have some solid material, worthy of your attention. Why not have a look at our "new look site" and then give us some feedback. http://pages.hotbot.com/arts/benharris/magicof.html ---------------------------------- 12. Proposed New Zealand National Convention ------------------------------------- Message from Donald John Garlick (NZ) I rarely rush into print but feel I would like to comment on some of the rather negative comments that I have been reading on a Sunday evening regarding the proposed New Zealand National Convention. Yes we do like to hold our conventions during the long lazy warm days of summer. We tend to treat them as a very informal family affair. I assure you, you will not be fighting with 2000 odd other registrants to get into the lectures nor scrambling for the last bread roll during the banquet. We Kiwis are a rather laid back lot, we do speak English, in a rather funny way! Let this be an invitation to our friends in the Northerner Hemisphere to come and visit and stay., we assure you of a unique experience, in the last remaining patch of Paradise. You just will not believe our exchange rate against the USA dollar, it certainly makes us weep when we venture to Northern parts. The people who will be the driving force behind the Convention have just held a very successful one day gathering in Auckland. Now this was real value for money, and included lectures/demos by Darryl of the USA and Sean Taylor of Australia plus dealers and they even feed us as well. All for $40.00 NZ, that works out at less than $20.00 USA...Wow! So shake the snow out of your shoes, come join us, lets have fun, we would love to show you a little part of our world......you will not be disappointed ! ------------------------------------- 14. IBM Ring 160 Day of Magic - My view ------------------------------------- Message from Sean Taylor (Aust) Biggest Thrill - Seeing Leo Ward - magic performed as it should be Biggest Disappointment - More direct rip-offs of other people's material. (At least 3 move for move or word for word) Highlight - Leo Ward Performing, Daryl lecturing Lowlight - Placement of dealer's room, people just forget it's there Biggest Improvements - The bar! Biggest Mistakes - Not making this an annual event, not enough 'between time.' More Things to do next time - Charge a fee which correctly reflects the quality of the event, add more breaks Things not to do - Overload the night show Funniest Joke - tempted to say the thought of a convention on Boxing Day! Most Improved performer - Paul Romhany - hard to believe he just keeps getting better! World class act! ------------------------------------- 15. Patter for Confusing Crayons ------------------------------------- Message from Don Thompson (US) - magicd@alltel.net If anybody has tried the Small Surprise Ending and The big Finish for the Confusing Crayons, please let me know what you think about those effects? And does anyone have a patter for Confusing Crayons they are willing to share? ------------------------------------- 16. "Blue room illusion" ------------------------------------- Message from Sefton Pryce (NZ) RPRYCE@xtra.co.nz Can you please help me in my quest; I am seeking information regarding the "Blue room illusion"? I am putting together the history on it. Also can someone e-mail me Mike Caveney's Internet address? ------------------------------------- 17. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings ------------------------------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante) The little boy watched fascinated, as the pencil, dropped a few moments ago inside the bottle, slowly, slowly, rose out from its glassy prison into the waiting fingers of his father. WHAM! - as he stood there wide-eyed, the MAGIC BUG struck - HARD, and another soul was forever lost in that wondrous world of all things magical and mystical. So began what was to become the career of one christened Frank Thomas Henry Orchard (glad they stopped there - my mother had a hell of a lot of brothers and uncles), who by the time he was fourteen had adopted the stage name (derived from his surname) and became known as 'The Amazing ORCHANTE' (pronounced Or-Shon-tay). Tricky for some - I remember many years ago a compere in Sydney spent half an hour practising the pronunciation back-stage, then introduced me on stage, using a hard 'k - boy, were there some red faces! That's when I decided to get my friend Barry from Radio I Auckland to do a professional announcement on tape for me. (Sorry, I can't remember his last name, but I think he's on IZB now - perhaps someone in Auckland can enlighten me). I was born in Auckland, New Zealand, on 13th September 1943, ugly as sin, all babies are - except to mothers and aunts. Years later I discovered I have a wee drop of Maori blood in me, from my mother's side - I'm rather proud of that, and I found an old photo of a great-great-great aunt - her face fully tattooed - a thing of beauty in Maori culture. I often wondered what else is in me - English probably. The New Zealand Maoris are a proud, cultured people - for all you non-New Zealanders, back in the old days they used to be cannibals, and quite a few of Captain Cook's men wound up in the cooking pot (hence the English). Puha and Pakeha they called it - puha is a sort of milkweed, and pakeha is Maori for white man. My father was a policeman from the 'old school' - a good swift kick in the backside and a severe talking-to in front of your parents if you were naughty - but God help you if you were caught again. He wasn't a magician - just knew a couple of party- tricks, as most fathers do. He lived the life of a policeman to the full and was never really off duty. Being the son of a policeman has definite disadvantages in the popularity polls at school. Those days were not my happiest. The one thing which saved me from getting belted behind the bicycle shed just because I was the local cop's son, was my then budding magical and hypnotic skills. I'll never forget that night of the school dance - black jacket, tie and shoes. I was made to wear my new BROWN shoes. The Headmaster sent me home 'incorrectly dressed'. Dad, in full uniform, dragged me back, exerted his authority, and there I was, the only boy in brown shoes, looking like a dick-head (or should that be dick-foot)? That was fun! 1954 - TEN YEARS OF AGE My father is transferred to a tiny village called Raupunga. If you were to look at a map of the North Island of New Zealand, Hawkes Bay on the East coast, you won't even find Raupunga - it's just a speck of dust between Napier and Wairoa. I believe there is now a motorway between Raupunga and Wairoa, but in those days, it was 26 miles from Wairoa on the worst, winding, up and down hills, loose stone chipping road in history with the resultant unbelievable clouds of dust which hung in the air, forever! Believe me, it was a major journey - around an hour and a half in a car. It really was 26 miles of bad road, felt more like FORTY! (Duane Eddy) My sister and I were the only two white kids at the local school - the brand new police house was only one of two homes not made out of corrugated iron. I can still remember trotting up the road to the nearest farm, billy-can in hand, for our daily milk, straight out of the cow, still warm for breakfast. I'm trying to paint the scene of total isolation, miles, hard miles from anywhere. Why? Because this is where I saw my first professional magician. He was known as THE FUN DOCTOR (his real name was Norman Tate). He was so old my parents remember him from when they went to school. I can still remember him playing the piano with his nose, juggling, balancing tables and chairs on his forehead and one magic trick that has stuck in my brain to this day - where a small block of wood, threaded on a long string, would slide down and stop whenever he ordered it to. More details next episode.( I'm trying to find a way of shortening this saga, but it just isn't possible. I hope, Alan, that your brilliant e-zine goes on forever.) Message from Tom Orchard. E-mail address: Veronica@tvorchard.freeserve.co.uk Thank you to all the people who have sent me 'hello's' and e-mails - particularly nice to hear from Simon Lovell. Cheers, Tom. 'See' you next week. ------------------------------------- 18. IBM Ring 160 Day of Magic - Review ------------------------------------- Message from Michael Woolf (NZ) Editor "Magicana Magazine" After the welcome and Dealer's Demo came the Close-Up Competition, starting with: "The Illogical World of Mark Cairns; then came Kris Kardo - Cups & Balls; Gary Gray - Chop Cup; Bruce Allan - Knife through Arm; Holly Ford with some youthful magic (Winner of Special Junior Award); Kyle Southern stacked some dice and Wayne Rogers featured an unusual Ring Flight. In the Stage Act Competition: Malcolm Silverman presented comedy "Do As I Do" Linking Rings; comedy collapsing tray and vase; and the Jumbo Sidekick. Ken Bates - comedy and magic - 5-card repeat; Casket Paper Fold; Clockwork Card-Finding Frog and Black, White and Spotted Silks. Leo Ward - classical manipulations; Wayne Rogers - recycled toilet paper -and a novel "stake" (a la card sword); and Tanya Nordick with the "Tony and Bride" act introduced at the Napier Convention. Quick Trick: Morgan Wayne - Walking Through The Great Rope of Johannesburg; Bill Morgan-Sleeve Bouquets and Rabbit production; Gary Gray's poetic magic hat startling everyone with the confetti cannon & silk finale. Bruce Allan produced a Giant Pencil from a handbag. Stan Goudge's Appearing Broom was useful to clean up the confetti. Terry Von Pein did a nice Comedy Bottle Production; Kyle Southern performed a comedy psychic gag; Francis Smith presented some classic coin manipulations, and Malcolm Silverman had a Comedy "Disappearing" Radio. Lecture: It was a great privilege to welcome Daryl - one of the greats of magic today, and rightly known as The Magicians' Magician." This performance was notable as the final in his two-year World Tour of Magic. His relaxed and friendly style immediately engaged those present, as did his expert advice on magic and presentation. The other overseas guest was Sean Taylor, from Sydney, Australia. It is always a pleasure to watch this consummate professional in performance. (I actually think his patter for the Pom Pom sticks gets faster every time!) Evening Stage Show: Danny Phillips introduced the performers and presented some nice magic between acts. On the bill were: Tania Nordick's Wedding Act; Sean Taylor with a 3-ended rope, Pom Pom Sticks, a $50 note and a shredder - (one answer to fire restrictions!) and an elegant new rising cards routine. Ken and Shirley Bates presented their comedy act featuring the Visible Séance; Kris Kardo had a traditional act including Silk to Egg and Chop Cup; Wayne Rogers played the Dancing Hank, a Clipboard Animation, the 4 of "Spades" and a Chair Suspension. Jon Zealando sang! in duet with very good c. & w. singer Steve Dix - featured were Johnny Cash's "A Boy Named Sue" & J.Z. in "A Magic Man Am I." New New Zealanders Bill and Marlene Seagraves gave us "The Great Notso" comedy act featuring a broomstick "suspension" (?) and a Snowstorm; we were treated again to the superb artistry of Paul Romhany's Charlie Chaplin act, if anything honed even sharper than last year; and finally came comedy ropes (including his own "Jumping Knot of Pakistan") and brilliant cards from Daryl, a major figure on the world stage. Another great day of magic. Thank you, IBM Ring 160. The full report, with photographs, appears in the next issue of "Magicana" Magazine (December-January.)
