Editor's Message ------------------------------------- Message from Alan Watson - The Magic One I was thrilled to receive a Certificate of Appreciation from the International Brotherhood of Magicians signed by International President, Robert A Escher. ----------------------------------------------------- In answer to George Robinson Jr (Texas) in item 5 regarding question Oscar Munoz - "Can anyone tell me how he faired?" At the recent 26th New Zealand International Magicians Convention held in Auckland, Oscar Munoz and his wife Melody were booked as one of the headline acts. Oscar's lecture really stood out for me and I can understand why he won the coveted I.B.M. Gold Cups Award for Close-Up. Michele and I also really enjoyed watching Oscar and Melody perform on the two public shows where they were an absolute sensation - especially the interaction and comedy pieces between themselves and the audience. ----------------------------------------------------- Remember if you have any magic news drop me a line: AW@Alan-Watson.com ---------------------------------- 2. Re: The "Message from Quique Marduk" ---------------------------------- Message from Tom Ogden (US) I urge any magician who goes to Buenos Aires to take Quique up on his offer to visit. I make it a point to stop into Bazar de Magia and have been the recipient of his generous hospitality on several occasions. Even though my cruise work takes me there during the South American summer, when many people are out of town on holiday, or if it's too difficult to arrange a full Ring meeting, Quique has always been able to gather several magicians together for dinner and drinks. On my last cruise stop in B.A. just two weeks ago I was fortunate enough to overnight the same night as the club meeting of the magicians in La Plata (about an hour's drive outside B.A.) Quique arranged for several of us to drive out to La Plata for dinner with several magicians (including Michel and Greco, the owners of Vernet magic, whose business is centered in La Plata), then on meet still more magicians at their own local clubhouse. I was especially lucky to be there that night, because the club (the C.M.P.) is putting together a second book of original magic, and several of the members demonstrated and explained the effects they hoped to include. Lots of very visual, stunning and unusual stuff. And to top off a perfect evening, I was even gifted with several tricks from Quique and the Vernet guys! Thank you one and all for a great visit! ---------------------------------- 5. Oscar Munoz from Texas ---------------------------------- Message from George Robinson Jr One of our local Magi's performed and did a lecture in New Zealand in Dec. Can anyone tell me how he faired? His name is Oscar Munoz from Texas. ------------------------------------------------------- 6. The Lost Collection Of The Great Leon ------------------------------------------------------- Message from Paul Ruben, owner of Remote Control Magic Company Finally, I am offering the Lost Collection of The Great Leon circa 1900-53 including one of a kind memorabilia, apparatus from his world renowned Stage Shows and THE BLACKSTONE SR. EXPOSE.... It has taken almost a year for us to categorize, price, document and certify authenticity. Every major piece is now featured with pictures, pricing, and description on www.RemoteControlMagic.com Fabulously set up from my home page with scrolling banner by our prize winning webmaster that has brought us 2 International Awards of Merit for web site Design...... This entire lost collection was featured in Mirabillis Magic Magazine with additional excerpts and pictures seen on our web site. Alan, there has been great interest by 2 international Auction Houses, but I want to keep this in the world magic community , and as such, will first offer for sale on our web site. The Blackstone expose written in the hand of Leon and documented by Michael Caveney, biographer of The Great Leon (his book). This could be as important as Houdini writing his expose and outing the illusions of Robert Houdin. Leon was livid at Harry stealing his copywritted illusions which we have complete documentation of. He gives everything away including pictures of Harry's illusions, where they came from, gaffs, trap doors etc...... SEE Our Collection Pages for so much more...... This is perfect for the collector that wants one of a kind pieces no one else can have, or one who wishes to write a book on material documented but never touched before..... ---------------------------------- 7. Trying To Locate A Jan Leenders ---------------------------------- Message from Peter J. Levins - plevins@aol.com I am trying to locate a Jan Leenders possibly from Belgium or perhaps a company named Exclusive Magic, Perhaps some of the recipients of your publication might be able to help, thanking you in advance. ---------------------------------- 8. This week we are heading up the Amazon and I will be on a 15 hour jungle trek which should be amazing, then at the end of this month it is back to Vancouver for a few months. Have been offered a full contract on the Burmuda Run, still need to decide my plans and for how long I want to be on that run for ... it's great to be asked though! ---------------------------------- 9. http://MagicUSAAuctions.com ---------------------------------- Greetings magic enthusiast. "Ballantine & Dacri - Comedy and Magic Workshop" ---------------------------------- Message from Steve Dacri (US) The Magic Circle has announced that they will present, for the first time ever, The Amazing Ballantine and Steve Dacri in a special lecture - "Ballantine & Dacri: Comedy and Magic Workshop" on April 29, 2002 in London. During this special evening, Carl Ballantine will also be awarded membership to the Inner Magic Circle during a presentation by President Michael Bailey, an honor that Carl has been looking forward to for a very long time. This will be Steve Dacri's second appearance at The Magic Circle, as he was a featured lecturer there last May. This will be the first appearance by Carl Ballantine in Europe in over 50 years! Long since retired, Steve Dacri convinced his friend to "do the act" a number of years ago, then Milt Larsen convinced him to appear on the Academy of Magical Arts Awards Show last April, where he literally brought the house down and received the first standing ovation of the evening. At 84 years young, Mr. Ballantine has not lost one fraction of his trademark timing or manic energy on stage. "We are now negotiating with a Las Vegas venue to bring Ballantine back to Vegas in a variety type show, which will feature comics, and a variety artist, plus Ballantine's classic spoof act. It is interesting to note that Ballantine was the FIRST magician to ever headline in Vegas, and he is truly anxious to return", says Dacri, who will produce the show and act as emcee, adding, "I am honored to be able to share the stage with one of the true legends of show business." The Ballantine/Dacri lecture will then be presented at the IBM convention in San Diego, where Carl will also present his timeless act. Often copied and imitated, nobody can match the flawless delivery and antics of the master, who is proud to claim that he's never performed a single magic trick that worked. ---------------------------------- 11. Internet Magic Hall of Fame ---------------------------------- Message from Steve Dacri, web host, MagicWebChannel.com Magic Web Channel, the Portal for the world of magic, announced the final ballot names for the first ever induction into the Internet Magic Hall of Fame, a permanent interactive exhibit honoring the achievements of magicians from the past and present. The Magic Web Channel asked members of their esteemed Panel of Magic Advisors to suggest individuals from the magic world to be included on the first ballot. (Check out the Panel of Magic Advisors page of MagicWebChannel for a current listing of the honored members, where, we are happy to say, one of our newest members is Alan Watson. From their feedback, we came up with a list of 55 of the most mentioned names in the LIVING category, and 60 of the most mentioned names in the DECEASED category. The names read like a Halll of Fame roster in of itself, and with every name representing a perfect candidate for induction, the choice was not easy. Many of the Panel of Advisors expressed the difficulty they had with the narrowing down process. A ballot was sent to every member of the Panel of Magic Advisors, and they were asked to nominate 20 Living and 30 Deceased. We have just assembled the results. There are now 20 Living and 20 Deceased names on the final ballot. Those names (Deceased appears this week, Living appears next week) can be found in my weekly column, ABRACADACRI on MagicWebChannel.com Final voting begins in February. Final voting will be done on the web site, where any visitor may cast a vote, and through the Panel of Magic Advisors. A ballot form will go out to each of the Panel of Magic Advisors to select the individuals who will be inducted this year. Each year, 24 people will be inducted, and new exhibits will showcase their careers and accomplishments. There will be interactive features, real time video clips, interviews and photos, in an ever expanding digital museum of magic and magicians. The most - mentioned name of all time? No surprise there, Harry Houdini was on everybody's list, and rightfully so. Know who was second on the list, separated by only one vote different? Harry Blackstone, Jr. Please check the site for progress and be sure to cast your vote. ---------------------------------- 12. The Orchante Saga #60 ---------------------------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) 'Strange goings on'- in Wellington City! I'm sure that I mentioned earlier that my diaries for the year's 73/74 have vanished, probably somewhere in the unfathomable depths of my aluminium trunk. Most of my memories of various incidents during those two years are still with me, except finite details and actual dates. At one point during 1973, we lived in Wanganui then for some reason decided to move to the capital city of New Zealand, Wellington. For the life me, I can't remember or understand why - 90 percent of the city/Housing is built on hills and the place is renowned for the ultra strong winds that blow there. The city is very exposed to the elements and the inhabitants are the butt of many a comedian's jokes - e.g. how everybody walks backwards, with a stoop - of 45 degrees etc. We found a nice little house to rent in a suburb called it Eastbourne, which is right across the harbour, directly opposite the City. The front lounge room had a massive window, giving us a fabulous panoramic view out over the harbour. At night it was particularly beautiful - with the city lights across the harbour twinkling like stars in the distance. The little street/roadway outside the front door was only about ten-foot wide, with the sea just on the other side. A two ft. high stone wall, which ran the entire length of the street, was supposed to be a sea-break - protection from the huge waves that could develop from the massive storms that would whip up in the harbour. Many a time during violent cyclonic storms (for which Wellington is infamous), with fierce winds howling like demented banshees, we watched in awe and with not a little apprehension, as the sea thundered and smashed into and over the 'minuscule' wall. Water and sea spray was flung 20 ft into the air, easily bridging the narrow street and crashing into the front of house. It was a miracle that the windowpane didn't cave in! Sure was exciting - it was the only thing about Wellington that was exciting, as far as we were concerned. It was only five years earlier, APRIL 10TH, 1968 (now 34 years ago) when Cyclone 'Giselle', the most ferocious storm in New Zealand's history, left a path of destruction throughout the North Island before it hit Wellington and sank the 9000 tonne inter - island car / passenger ferry, THE 'WAHINE' (At the time, the 'WAHINE' was the largest and most modern car ferry in the world!), with the LOSS OF 51 LIVES. Many of the survivors - and bodies, were washed up in the boiling sea and surf all along Eastbourne beach, not far from were we lived. ' WAHINE' is Maori for - 'BEAUTIFUL WOMAN'. We gradually became aware of a STRANGE SMELL that was emanating from somewhere in the lounge room but we couldn't pinpoint from where. Then one night whilst watching TV, we heard a scuffling noise and my first thought was, quite naturally, mice! By the time I got up and hit the mute button on the TV set (no remote controls are those days) the noise had stopped. This went on night after night, it was driving me crazy - I felt and probably looked like the demented 'Tom' - (for the 'uneducated', from the 'Tom and Jerry' cartoons) - looking for 'Jerry' ! Meanwhile, THE SMELL was becoming stronger and stronger and it had a decidedly FISHY whiff to it, which was starting, to put it mildly, to stink to high heaven! Without doubt this was NOT, Jerry the mouse. The scuffling, now accompanied by - BIZARRE STRANGLING NOISES, as well as the smell, intensified. Me being me, was beginning to think - poltergeists, ghosts and other -'not nice' entities. What the bloody hell WAS this? It is very difficult to pinpoint a smell or strange noises that seem to emanate from everywhere; to anybody looking on, I must've looked like a demented loony, as I continuously went around sniffing every inch of the room. One evening around a week later, both Veronica and I nearly jumped out of our skins as an unholy scream emanated from somewhere beneath our feet! We rolled up the carpet to reveal floorboards, which I promptly began to rip up, from the centre of the room. Fish! The unbelievable stench of rotting fish that bellowed up caused our stomach's to turn somersaults. Retching like mad I grabbed a torch and shone it down into the hole. I couldn't to see a thing, except several pairs of yellow/red eyes that, reflected by the light, glared back at me. 'YE GOD'S', my overwrought imagination screamed, 'YOU'VE STRUCK A NEST OF VAMPIRES'! Bravely, I thrust my hand holding the torch further into the hole and then, involuntary muscles kicked in - violently throwing me backwards across the room as something big, black and snarling viciously, lunged towards me. Another 'unholy' smell filled the room as I damn near filled my pants in fright! That was it. I threw floorboards haphazardly over the hole and slung the carpet over it as well -then took off out of that room like a rocket, slamming the door shut as I went, and waited for daylight! Next day we cautiously uncovered the hole and once again shone the torch down. With the help of daylight there it was, the cause of all our consternation - A NEST OF BABY PENGUINS! Not really surprising I suppose, the house was only a 'hop skip and a jump', from the sea. Scattered all over the place were the remains of fish; no wonder the place stank. With the floorboards and carpet covering them, the stench just seeped out from everywhere, making it impossible to pinpoint. The parents were obviously away, catching fresh fish for the young ones - thankfully, as when they are under threat they are, quite naturally, extremely vicious when protecting their babies, to which I can testify. I'm lucky that I didn't have my fingers bitten off! Being animal-lovers, we were not about to disturb them so I nailed the floorboards back down, replaced the carpet and stocked up on several tins of air-freshener. A few days later the lady from whom we rented the house, informed us that she had sold the property and that we would need to move out. When we told her about the penguins nesting underneath the house she assured us that she would inform the new owners and that the penguins would be taken care of, so that was that. All in all, we stayed in Wellington for just six weeks. To be perfectly honest, Wellington was just - NOT OUR KIND OF TOWN! We headed back to Auckland City - promoter David McKee wanted us to work some hotels with the band he managed -NOAZARK, and he had a proposition - for a tour up north, with the hypnotism show.
