Editor's Message ------------------------------------- Message from Alan Watson - The Magic One Robert Gallup's Extreme Magic & Deadly Escapes shows at the Auckland Sky City Casino have been awesome. It is very important that we support these international performers while here in New Zealand as we would like to see more international magic acts come downunder. Every one, be they professionals or juniors, benefits from them coming – the professionals have the flow-on effect from the heightened publicity awareness of magic with general public and the juniors learn from them. Tickets available now from Ticketek. Shows will be performed throughout the season Tuesday - Saturday at 8pm and Sundays at 5pm. There will also be matinee performances Saturday's at 4pm and special school holiday matinees Wednesday 25 September and 2 October at 2pm. Adult tickets cost $59.95 each and children 14 and under, $29.95 each. Students, senior citizens, adult matinee tickets and groups of ten or more, cost $49.95 each. For further information on Robert Gallup go to: www.GallupExtreme.com ----------------------------------------------- Remember if you have any magic news drop me a line: AW@Alan-Watson.com ---------------------------------- 2. Grand Master of Magic - Burns “DeLarno” Scandrett ---------------------------------- Message from Geoff Diggs - President Canterbury Society of Magicians In 1969 the Brotherhood of Auckland Magicians (Incorporated) established an award, “The Grand Master of Magic”, honouring New Zealand Magicians who are acknowledged by their peers as having made an outstanding contribution to the art of magical entertainment over a period spanning many years. The Brotherhood of Auckland Magicians has decided to bestow the award again this year and have selected for this unique honour a man who has devoted a considerable part of his life to all facets of the magic scene. The Canterbury Society of Magicians (Incorporated) is extremely proud to have supported the selection of their member Burns “DeLarno” Scandrett as a distinguished master of the art and craft of magic. It is widely known that for many years Burns owned and operated a focal point of magic - DeLarno’s Magic Shop - in Chancery Lane, Christchurch. At a later time he was also involved (along with Alfred Hayes) in operating DeLarno’s Magic Shop in Sydney, Australia. Burns is a Member of the Inner Magic Circle with Gold Star (London, England), Past President of New Zealand Assembly 250 of the Society of American Magicians and Past Territorial Representative of the International Brotherhood of Magicians (USA). During his forty-seven years as a member (now life member) of the Canterbury Society of Magicians he has served in virtually every capacity, including nine terms as President. Burns has always willingly shared his vast knowledge with all magicians, from those starting out to the more experienced. Burns is a national and international entertainer having travelled the world making guest appearances on live shows and approximately 200 television appearances in many countries. His talent and vast experience has enabled him to perform in all venues from Department Stores and Shopping Malls to Trade Fairs and Overseas Cruise Ships, from Restaurants and Cabarets to Magicians’ Conventions and Touring Variety Shows. This award follows a Citizens Award bestowed on Burns in 2001 by the Mayor of the City of Christchurch, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to charity. This related mainly to his work in helping to form the Variety Club of New Zealand (South Island) and Camp Quality - a Lions project for Children with life-threatening health problems. He also served several years as Entertainment Director for Camp Quality and as Organiser of the Annual Variety Club Children’s Christmas party. It is very apparent that Burns “DeLarno” Scandrett is a very worthy recipient of this exclusive award and fully deserves to join the Roll of Honour as Grand Master of Magic. The presentation of this inscribed medallion, by and on behalf of the Brotherhood of Auckland Magicians (Incorporated) and the Canterbury Society of Magicians (Incorporated) to Burns Scandrett signifies that he is indeed a Grand Master of Magic. ------------------------------------ 3. 70th Anniversary of the South Canterbury Society of Magicians ------------------------------------- Message from Geoff Diggs (NZ) President Canterbury Society of Magicians Venue: Ashburton (New Zealand’s scenic South Island) Date: Sunday, 15 October Occasion: 70th Anniversary of the SCSM (South Canterbury Society of Magicians) Over 50 magicians and friends arrived early morning from distant parts (including overseas), to be welcomed by a delightful ‘morning cuppa’ and a variety of scrumptious home made delights. Social fraternization started the day long celebration conclave, and continued throughout. After the official, and mandatory, opening, 70 tricks were presented by an almost equal number of prestidigitators in less than 50 minutes. It was a fun frolic, smoothly setting the events to follow. Michael Woolfe, publisher and editor of New Zealand’s popular Magicana magazine, presented a thoughtful talk on Stage Behavior, embellished with audience participation. Immediately following the lunch pause (during which time registrants were able to offer their ‘tired tricks’ a new home), the hall overflowed for the well paced community show. Variety was spiced and energetically seasoned by: El Grego (Christchurch), Roderick Mulgan (Wellington), Barry Brook (Palmerston North), DeLarno (Christchurch), Geoff Diggs (Christchurch) , and Grant Campbell and Company (Christchurch). TV3 recorded the event for the national evening news. After the general public ‘disappeared’, a non-competitive “My Favourite Effect” session concluded the day’s events. The banquet dinner at the Ashburton Hotel was exceptional – an interesting history of the SCSM was whimsically given by Graham Dockerill, followed by the President Bill Watson, and Secretary Russell Hendry, cutting the celebration cake. Next came a rare, remarkable, presentation. Geoff Diggs (President of the Canterbury Society of Magicians) took centre stage to give a brief panorama of the mystical life of Burns Scandrett (DeLarno), being honoured by his peers with New Zealand’s exclusive epithet “Grand Master of Magic”. The presentation was authoritatively made by Miriam Montagu (CSM Patron). Miriam was tour and business manager for The Amazing Mr Rooklyn and The Great Levante productions throughout Britain, Australia and New Zealand. DeLarno was the eleventh recipient in thirty two years (of whom six are deceased). Messages of congratulations were read from far and wide, including ‘The Magic Circle’ (London), ‘Zodiac Club’ (London) and ‘IBM Ring Singapore’. The pleasurable day was rounded off with a smashing fire-works display … leaving all, many magical memories. --------------------------------- 4. Wedding Bells - Guy Cater ---------------------------------- Message from Guy Cater (NZ) On September 29th I am to marry my delightful Widow from Wyoming Cynthia. The service will be held at 6pm at Kiwi Valley Function Centre in Henderson and that will be followed by a small reception and from 8pm the party stars. This is an invitation to kiwi magicians to come along and enjoy the party from 8:00pm. Should be a whole lot of fun as so many great performers other than magis will be attending and performing. All coming should slip 'a little something' in their pocket!!! Please ... we do not want any presents.. just your presence from 8 onwards ... just buy your own drinks. Ta! ---------------------------------- 7. The Sun Tec Convention Centre - Singapore ---------------------------------- Message from Guy Cater (NZ) Had an amazing evening at The Sun Tec Convention Centre in Singapore on Saturday evening. I was loath to return to that wonderful country to perform as it is so difficult to run a successful Hypnotism Show there (ask Grant Boddington or Paul Royter) but the offer of a LOT of money shows just how shallow I really am ... and I went. The show was for the Ministry of the Interior and as they wanted a meeting with me the day before they flew me over early and put me up in the superb Pan Pacific Hotel (very very nice). But what a shock at the meeting ... I was told 'Can't say Hypnotism Lah!!". I said 'WHAT?" and they repeated that they wanted me to do my show but at no time was the word Hypnotism to be used or any reference to an altered state mantioned. I said it was like booking a magician and saying 'Don't do tricks'. Not so bad though ... it only took a little thought to realise I could replace the word Hypnotism with RELAX. Did the show and it turned out well. It was a bit of a strain not to go into my usual patter ... when you have been performing one way for over 20 years and then have to be constantly alert to the words that normally pop out without thought ... it can be difficult. However, a happy ending. The clients were thrilled and I got paid and had a lovely weekend. Can't really ask for more than that. ---------------------------------- 8. Jeff Ezell Lecture ---------------------------------- Message from Jeff Ezell (USA) I have just sent the postcards for the Jeff Ezell lecture. Keep your eyes peeled for it. The lecture will be held on Monday September 23rd @ 7pm @ the Ramada INN-Burbank. Please call 818 843 5955 for directions. Here is a general overview of my history: Jeff Ezell has been a performer at the Magic Castle in Hollywood since 1998. He is also one of the few performers that have worked all 3 showrooms at the Castle. He has done restaurant magic, strolling, and numerous stand up acts as well as cruise ships. In addition, he is the owner of Mind Over Magic in Burbank, CA. Since his first appearance at the Castle, he has had many original ideas that have entertained other professionals such as David Regal, Whit Haydn, Loren Christopher Michael's and many more. Some of these ideas are X-ray Eyes, Card Morph, Quick Sticks, Visible Invisibility, McDonalds Blankety Blanked, The Ezell Shuffle Control and many more. Jeff Ezell's desire to take the road less traveled, to create the most visual magic with a powerful climax that anybody can do, has made him a well sought after teacher of magic as well as a performer. Recently, with the help of Nick Beyer, Jeff Ezell has devised an entire 2 man routine that packs a punch at the end that surprises the whole crowd and you can learn it in just a few minutes. Furthermore, Jeff Ezell has been lecturing locally at IBM rings. He has had rave reviews with future bookings already made for other rings. We look forward to seeing you there. The seats are $25 each. Please call now @ 818 562 1921 to reserve your seat for next Monday night. --------------------------------- 11. How To Be A Wizard ---------------------------------- Message from Terry Herbert (UK) Last April a video was issued in the UK for public consumption featuring yours truly as Mr Woo the Wizard entitled HOW TO BE A WIZARD. It is aimed at the 6 to 9 age group and set in a Wizard's School similar to Hogwarts in Harry Potter. I arrive flying on a broomstick as the Headmaster and transform into the Wizard and teach a class of children various simple tricks which of course are also learnt by the young viewers. I also perform various classics of magic without explanations of course. It has proved very popular and has had some very good reviews in the magic press over here. The good news is that I have just heard that it is due to be released in New Zealand and Australia and distributed by a company called Video Unlimited. I think also it will be available in DVD. For anyone interested in stocking it the email contact is Jamie MacKinnon on jamie@videounlimited.co.nz The other bit of news is that the British Ring of the IBM will be having their 66th Annual Convention in Eastbourne on the South Coast. It promises to be a great event with a fantastic international line up of acts. The dates are the 25th to 29th September 2002. As you have already reported we have recently tragically lost our President Elect the late dear Peter Laing from Aberdeen, so doubt our present President Mike Gancia will have to serve a second term. If any of your readers plan to be in the U.K at that time I know that they will be made most welcome. More information can be found on www.britishring.org.uk ---------------------------------- 15. How To Sew In A Hundred Topits In A Hundred Days! ---------------------------------- Message from Lisa Richards (Aust) What I did on my vacation or... How to sew in a hundred topits in a hundred days! It's a glorious day. I'm on the road to Montreal, typing this in the car on the laptop. It's really the first chance I've had to write about my adventures over the Summer... I mean Winter, I mean...well, since June. I had a whirlwind visit back to Australia in May. What I thought was going to be a relaxing break from touring turned out to be a manic time of sewing costumes and clothes for all the people who had been waiting for me to come back! So much for R&R. Less than four weeks later I flew directly back to LA to reconnect with Jay Scott Berry. Straight off the plane and out to Santa Monica Pier, and a couple of hours taking in the sights of the famous boardwalk. The weather was quite cool, still, for Summer, but a very pleasant change from the wintry conditions back home. Because of my earlier travels I have been following the cold weather around the world, so it was nice to get some sun! Vegas was a bit of a shock though, with temperatures in the mid forties (yes that is Celsius folks)! I had a week to recover from the flight, and get my act together for the first magic convention of the trip. And when I talk of recovery I mean it. A very full plane, and I, unfortunately, stuck with a middle seat, wedged (I mean it!) between two rather large gentlemen with body odour, and no idea of personal space boundaries. Add in a crying baby behind and I'm sure you get the idea. After a few days rest we took a redeye flight into Baltimore for the Phoenix Gathering. There were a couple of days before the convention started so Jay and I drove down to Atlantic City to catch Johnny and Pam Thompson perform in a new illusion show, Untamed Illusions, starring the Fuercos. Johnny and Pam are still as sharp and polished as ever, and it was a great chance to catch up with them. I nearly got to meet the tigers that performed in the show also, but ran out of time. A few late nights and early mornings later, it was back to Baltimore and the Phoenix Gathering. This was an amazing boutique style convention produced by Alain Nu. The unique angle of this convention is that it focused on the art and presentation of magic with a great deal of attention placed on teach- in sessions and discussions. Jay's lecture opened the convention, and it was neatly bookended to close with the new Topit Workshop. The new JSB Topits and their installation continues to draw great interest and this convention was no exception. I was completely overwhelmed while I was there, the magicians piling their jackets on me almost literally. I was so inundated, I saw practically nothing of the convention, and did not sleep for the entire three days in order to get all the jackets done, literally sewing right up until the time to leave the hotel for the airport, and the flight back to Vegas. I did however, get to see the main Gala show, masterfully MC'd by Alain Nu, and featuring Jay, Kevin James, Gaeton Bloom, Torkova and Hiawatha. The big surprise of the convention for me was the presence of an Australian television crew from the ABC'c Foreign correspondent. They were producing a special feature on the Convention, and shot extensively throughout the weekend, taking interviews from many of the conventioneers including Jay and myself. All in all a very impressive and well organized event and my sincere congratulations go to all those involved in its creation. From there we flew straight to Vegas. Well, not exactly. It was actually rather a nightmare round of boarding, waiting on the tarmac, deplaning, waiting in the rebooking queue, and tracking down mysteriously lost luggage. How do they manage to lose luggage before it even leaves the terminal? Over twelve hours later, we were finally back in Vegas and about to depart directly on to my biggest convention to date, the 74th Annual IBM in San Diego. And I mean big. Over 1400 registrants! My first impression was of the venue - The Town and Country Resort. Basically a self contained resort and a little slice of paradise. It was a dream venue for a convention of this magnitude, as almost everything was within a few minutes walk of the rooms, through lush, landscaped gardens brimming with roses in full bloom. Once again, I was kept pretty busy by the magicians and their jackets, but I had time to catch a couple of lectures, and gala shows. Bob Fitch's lecture was awesome. The man has true insight into the skills of performing, and I gained some really valuable information. Bob runs an intensive workshop, which I now have at the top of my "must do this lifetime" list. His knowledge of the skills of characterization, movement and all that goes into making "stage presence" is invaluable. I also caught Gaeton Bloom's lecture. No doubt about it, the man is a genius! He uses often really simple (but incredibly innovative, and totally surprising) principles to create truly mind-blowing and memorable magic. Also a really nice guy. I am hoping we can spend more time with him on the upcoming French tour. With less then a day to recover, it was straight on to the Magic Castle and a series of 8 master classes, and a week in the Parlour of Prestidigitation. The master classes are special hands on intensives set up by Mark and Nani Wilson specifically for the members of the Academy. They were very well received, in fact, so much so, that we have been rebooked for December. I was once again overwhelmed with jackets - at one point there were 22 hanging in my room and I just had to take a photo, because I thought no one would believe me! While there we found time to hang out with Christopher Hart, who was performing in the Palace, along with the Hamners, and a very creative young artist from Germany named Julius Frack. We were also very fortunate to catch the Lion King Musical. It was truly the most spectacular, amazing, magical production I have ever seen. Everything was perfect- costumes, music, dance, singing and puppetry. I had goosebumps through most of the performance. This is a definite must see! We also got to see the Chieftains at the Hollywood Bowl, performing live with the Hollywood Philharmonic Orchestra and the Pipe Band, concluding with a spectacular fireworks finale. A terrific experience. Back to Vegas for a weekend with Jeff McBride, Eugene Berger, and Alan Ackerman at Jeff's Summer School. This exclusive event was presented at Jeff's studios for a limited number of participants arriving from all corners of the globe. The highlight for me was the opportunity to see Jeff and Abbey and Eugene performing their stage show, which was the main event on Saturday night. Two days later we were on a plane to London, and Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty's Theatre. These few days respite were our reward for all the hard work so far. It was amazing - our Hotel was only a short walk from Hyde park and Notting Hill. We were able to spend a wonderful morning browsing the world famous Portabello market, and the afternoon feed the squirrels in Hyde park. From there we hired a car and headed west across to Stonehenge, Salisbury and on to Glastonbury. This medieval town cradles Glastonbury Tor, the mythical Isle of Avalon. There is definite a magical feel to this place. When the early morning mists roll in you can easily imagine yourself walking in the footsteps of Merlin and Arthur. From the summit of the Tor you can see across the Vale of Avalon in all directions. Below the Tor are the Chalice Well Gardens, a place of beauty, tranquillity and solitude with legendary links to the Holy Grail. The journey continued north and on to the Highlands of Scotland. What can I say. I love Scotland! From the shores of Loch Lomond to the heights of Glencoe, on to the Coastal town of Fort William and across to our main event just North of Edinburgh, in Falkland, and the Palace of Magic. To enter the village of Falkland is to be transported back in time. Cobblestone streets, beautiful stone buildings, the village fountain, and at it's heart, the majestic Palace itself.. This 14th Century Royal Residence was the site of the first Annual Palace of Magic Festival, a weekend of magic, mystery and merriment. This truly unique event was produced by Mark Fisken and Lewis Barlow and featured Ali Bongo, Jay, myself and many of the performing magicians from the Edinburgh Magic Circle. The atmosphere was wonderful, with performers throughout the palace rooms and grounds, displays of Falconry, Storytelling, Face painting, Balloon Modelling and even a Harry Potter look-alike contest. The weekend was an extraordinary success with over 2000 kids of all ages coming from miles around to join in the festivities. Of special significance, as part of the event, was the birth of the newest and most exclusive Magic Circle, "The Circle of Palace Magicians". Ali Bongo was installed as the patron, Jay as the honorary president. The only way to become a member is to be one of the invited performers at this event. Needless to say I am honoured to be a part of this group, and am looking forward with great anticipation to next years Festival. Did I mention that I love Scotland? Then it was a quick dash back to London, then straight back to LA, where Jay was performing in the Magic Under the Stars gala show. This special edition of Milt Larson's It's Magic was presented in the Hollywood Hills at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre. The show featured many well known artists including Whit Hayden, Goldfinger and Dove, and Chuck Jones. Since then, the last week has taken us across the US for workshops and lectures in Kansas City, Indianapolis, and Hamilton Ontario. In just a few days we will be off to Germany and the beginning of an extensive European lecture tour taking in 25 cities in less than a month. All in all it has been an incredible journey - it is difficult to believe only three months have passed. While Jay seems to think I have taken rather well to this life on the road, I have to admit that on occasion I wake up a little homesick and not exactly sure of where I am. A year ago I could never have imagined that I would have seen so many amazing places, and met so many wonderful people. So it seems a fair trade. And so the journey continues........ ---------------------------------- 16. The Gallos Magic World Wide ---------------------------------- Message from Jahn Gallo (Sweden) Hello from Jahn Gallo – The Gallos Magic World Wide - www.gallos.cjb.net www.gallos-lecture.cjb.net Being a professional magician for 30 years I am not so well known in the “Magic Club Land” as I have been busy doing magic in the real world... During the last years I had the possibility to take part in some magic conventions and some club meetings and to be part of all the fun you can find there! I also started to lecture at conventions and club meetings and will be lecturing in Germany during October. Next year I will do a Scandinavian lecture tour. Last weekend I had the great pleasure to present my new lecture for two magic clubs in Örebro Sweden and for The Swedish magic Circle in Stockholm Sweden. The comments at the Internet really made me happy! Extracted and translated from Sett Hört & Hänt (Seen, Heard and Happened ) Editor Christer Nilsson http://w1.155.telia.com/~u15503543/setthorthant010428.htm Jahn started the lecture by telling the magicians that people do not like to be fooled by the Magician!!! The magic must be mixed with lots of entertainment – a fact you will learn very quick if you become a professional Magician...Jahn’s bank note production” the Osaka Bills ” was explained. It is a very effective and yet easy to learn effect where you can produce lots of bank notes out of thin air.http://www.lurup.com/~persson/lecture.html How to overcome the weak parts in a routine was demonstrated in “Signed bank note burned and later on found in a wallet” Cheeky and well thought out in smallest detail. Jahn Gallo use Willy Wesssel’s Ring and rope routine as a starting point in a presentation which has become a very strong piece of magic. Cut and restored tie with no stooge and no extra tie is really clever and worth a lot for the professional performer. We also saw Jahn's version of Mc Donald's aces, Cut and restored rope with audience participation, a stand up card trick with more audience participation – a gambling effect where according to Jahn the work is zero... and still the effect is very strong. Intercepted in the lecture were lots of tips and advice’s drawn from Jahn’s 30 years as a professional magician. All effects are from Jahn’s professional routines – Do not miss this lecture if you have a chance to attend. Jahn’s lecture notes is on a CDR and contains not only text and pictures there is also video clips demonstrating the moves. From The Swedish Magic Circles web site:http://www.komikerklubben.se/smc/ Editor Kell Svanholm “Svasse” ..McDonalds aces, where Jahn introduced “Valerino’s Rumba Count” An effect worth the whole evening!!! Breather card with some interesting applications and the importance of a well rehearsed move (second deal ) finished of the evening. In my opinion one of the very best lectures we had at SMC for a very long time. Not since Jeff McBride lectured at Magic Weekend have we got so much value for our money! If there is any one out there, in this wonderful word, who is interested in organizing a lecture tour please contact jahn.gallos@bredband.net ---------------------------------- 19. THE LECTURE On Thursday, October 17, Mr. Burger will give a brand new lecture entitled "Constructing a Show." This lecture has previously been delivered to only one audience! The lecture will begin w/ a short performance, after which Mr. Burger will discuss his thinking on how to create and maximize the impact of a short or impromptu show. He will discuss his philosophy of what makes a good opener, middle and closing effect, ideas which of course can be adapted to a full-length Magic show as well. Guests are invited to arrive at 7 p.m. for refreshments, socializing and shopping. After the lecture, Mr. Burger will sell a number of his magical products, including a book that is not available through any dealer! Attendees may also purchase Mr. Burger's other books (see below). THE SEMINAR On Friday, October 18, Mr. Burger will give a 4-hour seminar for a small group of participants. Attendees will receive hand-made (by Burger) gaffed cards as well as a handout on "The Magician's Choice." The remainder of the seminar will be devoted to questions and answers on any topics that attendees may choose. Attendance at the seminar will be limited to 15 people. The Amazing ‘Orchante’ Saga – Page 124 ---------------------------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) THE ‘VOODOO’ GIRLS At various times in the Saga I have mentioned the name David McKee, a promoter and record producer from Auckland. I don't know what David is doing these days or even if he is still around, but I would sure like to get in touch and have a chat about the ‘Good Old Days’! What a character, about 5ft 8in – long fair hair and a face that reminded me of an impish pixie. He looked like he had never seen the light of day, and I always imagined that if he ever tried to sunbathe, he would vanish in a puff of smoke - he was also an inveterate chain smoker! He came up with some really great ideas at times - well, HE thought so. One of the ‘classics’ that I ‘fondly’ recall was when he decided that my ‘Yogi Act’ needed some ‘spicing up’ – which entailed getting me not just One, but TWO - ‘Make The Men Drool All Over The Place’, very attractive, Very Naked stage assistants, courtesy of Rainton Haistie, the infamous owner of the two equally infamous strip joints on Karangahape road, the ‘Pink Pussy’ and the ‘Pink Panther’ clubs! During this ‘moment of madness’, Dave also came up with a ‘New Title’ for my act: ‘THE HELLFIRE SHOW’ with the Psychic Witchdoctor ORCHANTÉ And His – ‘VOODOO GIRLS’! To make absolutely sure that every body knew what they were getting, in this ‘Unprecedented Presentation’, he ‘tastefully’ had large black dots inserted in the middle of the ‘O’s of the word - ‘VOODOO’, in all the publicity posters and leaflets – It was most, TIT-illating. ‘Psychic Witchdoctor? – I ASK YOU!’ “Bloody hell Dave, what were you thinking of, even worse, why did I let you get away with it! Perhaps it had something to do with us both being - ‘NUTTERS”! I’m not quite sure, even to this day, just exactly how these two ‘strippers’ were supposed to ‘assist’ me, all they had to do was bump, grind and gyrate their voluptuous bodies in time to my music; Now if they were to have done this during my magic show - I mean, just think about the ‘misdirection’ possibilities, I could have created miracles! The first show that David organised, that incorporated ‘The Girls’, was at the Great Northern Hotel, which was situated down the bottom of Queen St. just up from, and on the opposite side of the road from the main Post Office. With all the rebuilding that has gone on in downtown Auckland City since ‘I left home’, I wouldn’t be surprised if it has long since been torn down. Now I had worked that hotel on many occasions in the past - and it was also where I used to meet my old friend Al Horobin (now deceased), for drinks. With two characters like Al and I, it didn’t take long for the Manager to get to know us and vice versa, especially with my close - up magic sessions in the bar, that just seemed to ‘kinda’ happen, apart from my shows in the main lounge room. The thing is, the ‘Great Northern’ was a very nice hotel, with a very respectable clientele, which included various International guests staying in the house. It wasn’t until an hour or so before ‘Show Time’, that the Manager (whose name I can’t recall) became aware that TWO STRIPPERS were in the show as well. He nearly had a fit! He grabbed hold of Dave and told him there was: “No way the show was going on, with those ‘Two Birds’ In It’!” “Orchanté can do HIS show, but NOT with those ‘Slappers’, in it!” OOPS, PANIC STATIONS! ‘What ya gonna do, for help within minutes?’ ‘Call ‘Ghostbusters?’ ‘NO, call Sally Phillips!’ I have mentioned elsewhere in my saga that, back in the sixties, Sally occasionally stepped in as an ‘emergency’ assistant for a few select artists/magicians when the need arose. Following a frantic telephone call, Sally arrived at the ‘Northern’ in record time, dressed to kill and looking every bit the Lady she is. After a very quick rehearsal - of sorts, the show went on. No problems - well what do you expect, when you’ve got two Pros’ on hand! I MUST relate Sally’s story one day, and that of her husband Derek Metzger, a very well known N.Z. singer. Sally and Derek now reside in Sydney. Delving into the depths of my ‘bottomless’ aluminium trunk, (which holds over 35 years worth of magazines, newspaper clippings, posters, leaflets and God only what else), a poster ‘floated’ up, advertising The ‘Hellfire’ Show - complete with the ‘Naked Voodoo Girls’, at the Thunderbird Valley Inn, together with the ‘Impressions’ Show Band. I guess the Girl’s, and their ‘knockers’, finally got to - ‘knock the punters socks off’ – I don’t think anybody really noticed me, even though I did try to keep ‘abreast’ of things! Think I had finish this now, before I make any more - ‘boobs’! ------------------------------------- 21.
