Dante Memorial Service ----------------- Message from Phil Temple (US) Following on from a successful 9 month fund raising campaign throughout the magic community in the United States and abroad, Harry August Jansen (DANTE the Magician) and his wife Edna Herr Jansen were finally laid to rest at the San Francisco Columbarium in San Francisco, California. An engraved cararra marble frontis piece, with Dante's name in 23 carat gold-leaf, seals their niche. (For almost 50 years the Jansens have languished in the basement "communal vaultage area" of a southern California cemetary). The San Francisco Columbarium is a historical landmark, conveniently located in the city at One Loraine Court. Invited members of the magic community who attended the historic Jansen/Dante Memorial Service on Sunday, May 9, 2004 included Dante's 93 year old daughter, "Dolly" Jansen Haines and her two daughters: Board Member Mary Haines Schreiber and her sister Helen Haines. The third generation of the Jansen family was represented by Theresa Elaine Schreiber. Dante Memorial Fund Board Members Dr. Robert Albo, Byron Walker and Chairman Phil Temple were joined by Past International I.B.M. President John Browne III, Dr. & Mrs. Gene Matsuura, Mr. & Mrs. Dale Lorzo, Dom di Mento, Bill Brooks and numerous other friends of the family, Board and press. Following the memorial service, guests enjoyed an elegant reception at the Pacific Heights home of Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Schreiber. Those wishing to pay their respects to "The Last of the Great Masters" at the Columbarium are always welcome. ----------------- 3. Appearing Pencil From Silk ----------------- Message from Jack Poulter (Canada) After reading Jamie's description of the Appearing Pencil from Silk, I recalled a gag item I have used in the past. Modify the inexpensive pencil into a wand with an eraser on both ends. Tell audience that it is a special pencil for people who make the same mistakes twice. And mention that it can be used as a magic wand when given away. The eraserless pencil can also be converted into a wand by applying white tape or heat-shrink plastic tubing, for another give-away item. ----------------- 7. Ellis In Wonderland ----------------- Message from Ellis Webster (Aust) Hot off the presses and straight to your computer screens comes the news that TIM ELLIS & SUE-ANNE WEBSTER will present, for the first time ever in Australia, their lecture ELLIS IN WONDERLAND on Friday night at the 29th Australian Convention of Magicians. To find out more about this lecture www.magicunlimited.com/lectures.htm This is the same lecture they presented at Hank Lee's Cape Cod Conclave, The IBM National Convention, The Battle of The Magicians, FFFF, and all over Europe and the USA. It features Razorblade Eating, Mentalism, Card Tricks, Strolling Magic Approaches, Runaround Sue, and the infamous Soda Can Resurrection. This is your chance to learn all the tiny details of these effects and the lecture is FREE to those attending the 29th Australian Convention of Magicians. REGISTRATIONS MUST BE RECEIVED BY MAY 31 ----------------- 8. Magic Mondays At Dantes - Melbourne ----------------- Message from Ellis Webster (Aust) Magic Mondays at Dantes's was a big success last night in Melbourne with a standing room only crowd watching Magikhana, Nick Nickolas and Dean Atkinson in action at Dante's in Fitzroy. If you are coming to Melbourne for the Convention and you are interested in performing at Magic Monday on June 14, contact Nick Nickolas on 03 9510 3973 or email him at nicktrick@mac.com ------------------------- We did a very rushed version of our Toast today on Good Morning Australia with Bert Newton, as our 6 minute spot was reduced to 3 about 10 minutes before we were to go on. (You'll get to see the Soda Resurrection at it's regular speed at the convention during our lecture!) However, the segment seemed to go well, even though we didn't get a chance to plug the Convention Shows there was a good mention of the convention and the website was displayed on screen. PHIL CASS is going to be on Kerri-Anne Kennerley's show on June 8, and he'll also be doing a plug for the convention, so set your VCRs again! ----------------- 9. This causes the can to shed its metal and leave the mark of the coin on it. Props - Silver foil from the magic foil system, a piece of a can the same diameter of a fifty cent piece, a fifty cent piece and of course a can of coke. Method - Magician tells the spectator that heat from a coin causes magical properties. The magician then takes a fifty cent piece out of his pocket. Blows the heat on the coin and rubs it. He then takes the coin and places it on the can. He then removes the coin from the can and puts it in his pocket. The magician then peels away a layer of the can and lone and behold there is a silver coin mark left on the can. Set-Up - Take your foil and cut out a shape of a fifty cent piece. Then you are going to rub it on the can. Put a layer of clear nail polish on the foil so that it will not come off when you remove the layer of metal. Next you are going to take an empty can of coke and cut out a piece the same size of your foil. You are going to use either silly putty or stick tac and place it right in the middle of the piece you just cut out. Only use a very minute piece of putty or it will take the foil off. You should now have a can of coke with the foil on it and the piece of metal covering the foil so that you can't see it. Note - This effect is great for adult and kid shows. For an adult show you can use a beer can and for the kids any can of pop will do. Also be very careful cutting out the metal because it is very sharp. When you are done you will have a nice looking prop that will last a long time. This is a new and fresh idea and never been seen before by laymen or magicians. Special Note - If you need to know more information about the foil system you can either email me or you can go on the main web site of ring 2100. Look for Jaimie-G and click on it. This will explain how to get it and also other ways to use the foil. I am dedicating this trick to the Willmarth family. Thank you very much for all that you have done for me. Enjoy this special prop and have fun with it. Please send me your comments on my card melt. I have a booklet that I am making regarding this effect. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank You. People that have not yet received the card melt yet please be patient with me. Our mailing system here is very slow and it takes a while for it to go through. Also for those of you who have ordered the foil system the same goes for you too. ----------------- 16. "BIMBO" Card Trick ----------------- Message from Capt. Bill James During World War II (1941) a magician came to our camp in England and entertained us. He ended by doing a story with a deck of cards. I had just started in the magic hobby and was quite impressed. However, I have rewritten the story to suit my personality. Here it is. When doing a “Close up Gig” I end with this story. Preparation: A pack of cards is set up as follows. With pack face down starting with top card (back up) KC; KH; KS; KD; 2C; 10C; 6H; 9S; 8D; QH; QS; QD; QC; 2H; 10H; 6S; 9D; 8C; AS; AD; AC; AH; 2S; 10S; 6D; 9C; 8H; 7D; 7C; 7H; 7S; 2D; JC; JH; JS; JD; 5D; 5H; 3S; 3C; 3H; 5C; 4C; 4S; 4D; 3D; 4H; 10D; 6C; 9H; 8S; You will have the 5 of spades left over. This 5 represents the young fellow by the name of “Bimbo”. Once the pack is set up as indicated you can place “Bimbo” (5S) in the pack about 10 or 15 cards from the top of the pack. You will note the pack is set up in the CHaSeD method, i.e. Clubs, Hearts, Spades, Diamonds. I have included the actual patter (I use) In CAPITAL LETTERS for simplicity in learning this effect. Presentation: I’D LIKE TO TELL YOU A STORY ABOUT A LITTLE BOY BY THE NAME OF BIMBO. (While using this opening line I am false shuffling) Look through the pack and take out the 5 of spades. WE WILL USE THIS 5 OF SPADES TO REPRESENT THE YOUNG FELLOW WE CALL “BIMBO” ONE DAY BIMBO WAS WALKING DOWN THE STREET WHEN HE MET THE LADY WHO OPERATED THE LOCAL RESTAURANT. SHE SAID “BIMBO CAN YOU HELP ME? “MY FOUR COOKS HAVE PACKED UP AND LEFT”. BIMBO SAID” I’LL SEE WHAT I CAN DO”. (At this point place Bimbo (5S) face down on top of pack and ask the spectator to cut the cards. Continue by saying “BIMBO LIVED IN A FAIRLY LARGE TOWN AND HAD QUITE A DISTANCE TO GO” .”AS A MATTER OF FACT HE WENT ONE BLOCK, TWO BLOCKS, ETC. (As you say one Block, remove 4 or 5 cards from the top of the pack(keep in order and together) and place face up on the table, continue with three blocks, four blocks etc, each time taking a few cards off the top of the deck and placing on the pile on the table. UNTIL you see one of the 4 bottom cards of the original set-up, 10 of diamonds, 6 of clubs, 9 of hearts, 8 of spades and BIMBO (5 Spades) He will always be directly below the 8 of spades. Example when you turn up a group of cards and the ace up card is say the 6 of clubs, you will know the that the next 3 cards are 9 of hearts, 8 of spades, and BIMBO (5S) . In this particular example when you see the 6 of clubs take off two cards in order (9 of hearts and 8 of spades) backs up place on bottom of pack you are holding and allow these two cards to protrude about 1/3 of the way at the same time saying” HE TOOK A SHORT-CUT BACK OF THE GAS WORKS KNOCKED ON THE RESTAURANT DOOR (as you say this snap finger against top of deck and turn up BIMBO (5 S). After you turn up Bimbo toss him to one side pick up the cards from the table and place them between any cards that you have protruding and the pack itself. Square up cards. They are back in their original order. At this point you say as if you were the lady operating the restaurant” WHY ARE YOU BACK SO SOON BIMBO? “You reply” I HAVE THE 4 COOKS OUT IN FRONT. WELL BRING THEM IN SHE SAID” So Bimbo brought in the four cooks. There KING OF CLUBS, KING OF HEARTS, KING OF SPADES, KING OF DIAMONDS. Call each card by name as you lay them from left to right on the table face up. So she said “THANKS BIMBO HERE’S A TWO DOLLAR TIP FOR YOUR SERVICES (as you say this turn up the next card and say TWO OF CLUBS. (WHERE IN THE WORLD DID YOU FIND THE COOKS BIMBO. OH I FOUND THEM HAVING A DRINK AT TEN, SIXTY-NINE EIGHTH AVENUE. Put out the cards from left to right as you say the above. So she said THANKS VERY MUCH BIMBO BUT WHILE YOU WERE AWAY MY WAITRESSES PACKED UP AND LEFT. DO YOU THINK YOU COULD FIND ME FOUR WAITRESSES. Bimbo ‘SAID I’LL SEE WHAT I CAN DO.” So away he went. Put Bimbo on top of deck and have the deck cut once again. Start taking off groups of cards and laying in a pile on table. THIS TIME BIMBO WENT 1 BLOCK, TWO BOCKS ETC. Remember you are looking for one of the key cards, (10D; 6C; 9H; 8S) Well Bimbo you’re back so soon did you find me four girls? I DID. Well bring them in. There was the Queen of hearts; Queen of spades; Queen of Diamonds; Queen of Clubs. Here’s a Two dollar tip (for your services 2 of hearts) where in the world did you find the girls Bimbo. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 26 ‘SO YOU’RE A FIRE-EATER! NAME YOUR POISON!’ -THE FUEL – Back in the ‘Dark Ages’, fire-eaters used petrol, until they started turning a lovely shade of blue – from Lead poisoning. These days most use Lighter fuel, and some mix up exotic combinations. Kerosene, which is very slow burning, makes for great fireballs, but it stinks. Many years ago I realised that blowing the biggest, longest fire-ball DID NOT mean you were a ‘great’ fire-eater – presentation and entertainment value rode high above all other factors. The biggest complaint I’ve heard continuously, for years, from bookers the world over, is the terrible black smoke, stench, blackened ceilings, and soot that fire-eaters left behind in the venues – and on the customers. I resolved to find a fuel which was practically smokeless, and which did not stink out the venues. In Sydney Australia, I spent considerable time with the Chemists at the Shell Refinery discussing the problem - they mixed up all sorts of concoctions – finally came up with one they called, appropriately, ‘Shellite’, which worked very well – enabled me to perform in venues which wouldn’t normally touch fire-eaters with barge poles. When we immigrated to Britain in 1985, I could not find ‘Shellite’ in the country, so started the whole process over again at a big Refinery in Edinburgh, Scotland. They finally came up with a product called Petroleum Ether -– it was fantastic – far better than the Australian Shellite, but, it was lethal, in more ways than one, as I was to find out ten years later. It was so volatile and had such a low boiling point that static - or a decent sneeze - could set it off; it had to be transported in a special container! It was totally clean burning and odour free, burnt very brightly, and produced an extremely hot flame. The heat was unbelievable. It took some time, even with hypnosis to get used to it, and oh boy, was it fast, deadly fast. I used to blow fireballs 20 feet plus, no problem, with the Shellite, but with this stuff – maybe 10 feet. If you tried to hold more in the mouth, to spray out, you just wouldn’t get it out quick enough. Blowing multiple fireballs was totally out of the question. You couldn’t just buy the stuff at a Hardware store – it was only available at chemical Laboratories – had to sign for it, as it is supposed to be for professional use only in Laboratories. Over the ten years, I used this stuff; I must have gone through countless gallons of it. 1995 – I’ve gone to a supplier, as I am running low, and the chemist says ‘oh, by the way, you had better have these’. He gave me a large envelope on which was written in large red lettering IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS! AS REQUIRED BY LAW: - HEALTH AND SAFETY AT WORK ACT. The Chemicals (Hazard information and packing for supply) regulations 1994. THIS ENVELOPE CONTAINS SAFETY DATA SHEETS FOR CHEMICALS SUPPLIED ON YOUR ORDER. There were four A4 sheets – most of the information was way above my head, and intended for laboratory technicians. Here are the ‘bits' that are relevant to me: ‘Petroleum spirit’ (Ether) 40 – 60 degrees C. Skin contact: Wash skin thoroughly with water. OBTAIN MEDICAL ATTENTION Page 27 Handle with gloves; High grade PVC Eye Protection; Goggles or face shield Other precautions; Plastic apron, sleeves, and boots. Flash Point - 45 degrees C Explosion limits; Lower 1% Upper 8% Toxicological information: After inhalation of vapours; Irritation symptoms in the respiratory tract. After ingestion: nausea. Risk of aspiration upon vomiting. Possible symptoms; pneumonia. After absorption; Headache, dizziness, agitation, spasms, unconsciousness. Cardiovascular failure, respiratory paralysis. ------------------------ For those who may be interested, here is an excerpt from a letter written to my doctor by the Consultant Physician; Quote; ‘…I saw this interesting man in the clinic today, and spent some time discussing with him our clinical findings… Going back into the history, he certainly has variable symptoms, and his wife feels he has been breathless on exertion for about 7 years, but symptoms have obviously increased since… He has also inhaled significant fumes in his fire-swallowing activities. He is going to give me details of the fuel he has been using over the last 10 years… His transfer factor for carbon monoxide is very low at 25% and I am sure this is explained by significant emphysema’ Unquote. I CURSE THE DAY I STARTED USING THE PETROLEUM SPIRIT – IT HAS COST ME MY LIVELIHOOD AND MY LIFE. However, I still have my sense of humour - a little sick at times - okay, okay, very sick - and warped! I’m still breathing, with Nebulised drugs, oxygen tanks on hand, and after that, well, we all have to go sometime. Self-hypnosis and a positive attitude keep depression at bay 99% of the time. I’ve got a loving wife; my mate Martin, helps keep me happily insane with our own brand of medicine, and a lot of folks around the world seem to enjoy my misadventures via Alan’s E -Zine.
