Editors Message ------------------- Message from Alan Watson - The Magic One Message from Paul Romhany Wonderful Time in Vancouver I know Tony and Mary Wilson from New Zealand email their adventures while on tour to the e-zine but I wanted to send a little note. Natalie and I are here in Vancouver for 2 months R&R and are enjoying the summer so it was a great chance for us to catch up with them while they are on their whirlwind tour as President Elect of the IBM. Last night we attended the Vancouver Magic Clubs evening of magic put on for Tony and Mary and we all had a great time. Tony has put together an original presentation based around New Zealand with some clever twists on 'classic' effects. If they come to your city make sure you catch up with them. --------------------- In last weeks issue I mention about the special Kiwi Parade in the July issue of the Linking Ring. I inadvertently forgot to mention Theo de Leeuw’s contribution to this issue with item in "It really happened". ---------------- Remember if you have any magic news drop me a line: AW@Alan-Watson.com ----------------- 2. The Death Of Peter Blanchard ----------------- Message from Tony Brook I was extremely saddened to read of the death of Peter Blanchard. I had the pleasure of knowing him personally and he was one of the few real gentlemen left .in every sense of the word. He was outstanding in his convictions and courtesy and did more for the art of magic than most. My son Charles and I have much to be personally thankful for .we will always remember his many kindnesses to us. Not just magic, but the world has lost a remarkable human being. ----------------- 3. Italian Week At The Magic Castle ----------------- Message from Tony Binarelli In October from the 17 to 25, Ron Wilson and Aldo Colombini organized The Italian Magic Week At The Magic Castle. The performers from Italy are: Tony Binarelli - lecture and stage show Vanni Bossi - lecture and close-up Silvia Gaffurini with Francesco Addeo - stage illusions Paolo Giua - stage manipulation ----------------- 4. Tony Wilson’s Magical Adventures ----------------- Message from Tony Wilson – IBM International President Elect On Friday June 18th we flew to San Diego via Los Angeles with a few minor glitches. Security decided to select Mary as random passenger and she got the full treatment before heading for the gate. As we left security we then walked to the gate in completely unsecured space where anyone could have loaded us up with anything we wanted which negated the full attention Mary had experienced a few minutes earlier!!! Jack White kindly met us at the airport and took us to our hotel for the weekend. On Saturday morning he returned to take us on a personally guided tour of San Diego including lunch at Balboa Park and visiting some possible IBM Convention sites for a future Convention. Thanks Jack for all of your personal hospitality during our stay in San Diego. The evening was spent in the company of the members of Honest Sid Gerhart Ring 76 at Jack’s Magic Place in east San Diego. What a wonderful evening! What a wonderful magic venue! Drinks, dinner and a formal show were presented. Even a Blendo with the NZ Flag as a finale performed by Bob Ingalls to our National Anthem. Mary and I cut a suitably inscribed cake and were presented with San Diego IBM Convention 2002 tee shirts. I presented Jack White with an IBM Ring 160 Banner. We enjoyed entertainment from Jeff Marcus, Michael Johnson, Terry Lunceford and Bob (NZ Flag) Ingalls. I then returned the favours with my 20 minute stand up and 10 minute close up presentation which was well received. Ring 76 then gave me the honor of honorary membership of their Ring and I answered some questions from the members present before wrapping up the evening. Thank you Ring 76 for your kind hospitality and the warmth and friendliness shown to Mary and myself. A visit to Sea World and the famous San Diego Zoo wrapped up a most enjoyable visit to San Diego. Next stop Vancouver. ----------------- 5. Ventriloquist Explains It All, Humorously and Touchingly ----------------- Message from Bill Brunelle Jay Johnson is not full of himself. But in his knock-'em-dead show, "The Two and Only," at the Atlantic Theater in Chelsea, he is full of everyone else. A dozen wildly improbable characters spring to life through his zipped lips, not counting voices rising from the basement, floating from the wings or muttering startlingly right next to our ears. This is one of the funniest shows of the year, but it is rich in much more than laughter. Mr. Johnson won cult status as the ventriloquist Chuck with his smart-aleck wooden sidekick, Bob, on the ABC sitcom "Soap" in the late 1970's, but he is also a master puppeteer. His people dolls are more animated by passion than he is, and his animals and objects are transcendent spirits. A boa writhes in anxiety for fear Mr. Johnson will reveal he's a snake. Nethernore, a vulture, is chagrined because everyone laughs when he tries to nauseate them, but he sings a vulture's version of "My Way" that you will never forget. A tennis ball bouncing out from the backdrop becomes a pop-eyed skeptic who refuses to believe that all those voices flitting around are Mr. Johnson's. An acrobatic chimpanzee reduces evolution to comedy with a series of irresistibly tasteless jokes as he vocalizes an astonishing range of jazz riffs, ending with a hilarious simian aria that shimmies up and down a few octaves while Mr. Johnson's face is stone still. To show us how he does it all, Mr. Johnson draws sound waves with a marking pen on a thin plastic sheet a foot square and turns the waves into a face that moves its eyes as it begins to speak and then in a resounding baritone sings "I Ain't Got No Body." As always when he explains his magic, Mr. Johnson leaves us baffled. His real secret is that he is a gifted storyteller. The story is his autobiography, which he calls a dream. It begins and ends with an old master who made Mr. Johnson's first puppet and in death bequeathed his own trademark puppet to him. That ending is so emotionally charged it should backfire. But the storyteller gives it a twist so surprising that the audience jumps up cheering. www.nytimes.com/2004/05/25/theater/reviews/25TWO.html?ex=1086442106&ei= 1&en=5913ade5f1d2a10c ----------------- 6. The latest update on Tom Orchard’s progress ----------------- Message from Veronica Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)Wife The latest update on Tom Orchard’s progress Tom saw the consultant yesterday for the first time since he came out of hospital, and there are a few problems. His heart has changed since his last x-ray; it is slightly more enlarged and this, together with the swelling in his feet and legs, means there is a possibility of pulmonary embolism. He has to have a further heart scan this week, with dye in the veins so they can see if there has been a pulmonary embolism. There may also be fluid at the base of the left lung, as the air is not moving there, as it should, so all of this is making him feel worse than he should be at this stage. The district nurse is to come in daily to give him injections of warfarin to thin his blood to prevent clots. He has been on Frusemide (actually, this has just been changed to another one, which has made him pee 4 times this morning), he's on co-codamol, ibuprofen, morphine sulphate, and gabapentin, all for pain. Mucrodyne to help him spit up the phlegm, movicol to help the bowels, plus his normal nebulised drugs, and he has to be on oxygen nearly full time. He was trying to cut down the oxygen, but the consultant told him to stay on it until otherwise notified. Oh, and of course, he is now on warfarin injections too. ----------------- 11. Magic Picture Frame - Jamie-G ----------------- Message from Jamie-G (Canada) Effect: During the show the magician asks spectator to choose a card from the deck. After the card has been chosen it is returned back into the deck. The magician then points out the small picture frame sitting on his table since the start of the show. There never has been anything in the frame and the front of the frame is solid glass. The magician walks over to the frame places a silk handkerchief over top of the frame. The magician counts two three lifts off the silk and the chosen card is in the frame. Requirements: You need these props: A deck of playing cards, an all glass front small picture frame, a silk handkerchief, one extra card and some yellow tape. Tip: You can get some beautiful picture frames from the dollar store you just have to shop around. You can make excellent magic from going to stores like this. You can get the silk from any magic store. This trick uses just a normal deck of cards. Set-Up: First we must gimmick the frame. The frame usually comes with a picture all ready in the frame take this out. Now we have to put a playing card in it. Pick a card (say the 3 of  Clubs). Before you put the card in the frame you should put a small thin layer of double stick tape on the sides of the card. This will prevent the card to come out. Once the tape is on slide the card in the back of the frame so now we can see it from the front of the frame. Once this step is done remember the picture that you took out of the frame we are going to use it know. Turn it backwards (make sure it is blank) you going to make a pull tab out of yellow tape (this is to grab and pull out to reveal the card in the frame.) Make the tab out of yellow tape make this in the middle top of the clear side of the picture. On my frame the back is black this is the color the pull tab has to be. Note: The back of your frame can be any color make sure that your pull tab is this color. I just use a black magic marker because people never see it any way. Once you are at this point you slide the white paper over the front of the 3 of Clubs. (With the pull tab on the top. If you did it right it should look like your picture frame has nothing in it.) Special Note: The frames I use are so beautiful it looks like something from collectors work shop. This can be one of your best effects. No one knows or cares that it comes from the dollar store. Method: During the show you pick someone. You force the 3 of Clubs on them (use any card force you like.).The picture frame has been sitting there since the beginning of the show. Walk over to the picture frame cover it with the silk count two three feel for the pull tab and pull it out using the silk for cover place the silk in your pocket or in your table. Show the frame to be solid glass in the front and now their card is in it. Note: I use a pinky break with my frame but you can use a Hindu shuffle or whatever suits you the best. Don't pass this up as a cheap trick I'm telling you layman just love this. Patter: Ladies and gentleman boys and girls you are about to see the greatest card trick in the world. But first I need a helper. (Get a person) Now "MISS" I need you to tell me to stop anytime as I riffle down the deck just yell out stop. O.K take that card and show it to everyone but me. (The 3 of Clubs) Please lose that card in the deck. Now you could have picked any card and everyone but I saw it. You are about to see a miracle see that picture frame its been sitting there since the start of the show All I have to do is place this silk over the frame and count to three.1.2.3.WOW your card is now in the frame look at it there is no trap doors in it just solid glass lets give my helper a big round of applause.JAMIE-G ------------------ 12.
