We all would love to get more news from Europe. --------------- Remember if you have any magic news drop me a line: AW@Alan-Watson.com ----------------- 2. Roy Stuns Crowd At Stardust - Siegfried & Roy Tiger Dies At 25 ----------------- Message from David Neubauer (US) Roy stuns crowd at the Stardust In his first public appearance since the career-ending tiger bite, Roy Horn waved and flashed a thumbs-up Tuesday at the Stardust showroom. A stunned crowd broke into applause as the wheelchair-bound Horn was escorted to his table minutes before the start of "Havana Night Club," the Siegfried & Roy-backed revue from Cuba. The 59-year-old Horn clearly enjoyed his first night on the town, pumping his fist in the air and hollering his approval as the show played out on the stage where Siegfried & Roy's career took off in the mid-1970s. "It's a historic night," Siegfried & Roy Manager, Bernie Yuman said. "He's been looking forward to this for months." In evidence of his paralysis, Horn applauded by slapping his right hand against his leg to the energetic Latin beat. Roy returned from Denver on Saturday after a two-week evaluation at Craig Hospital, a leading rehabilitation center for stroke and trauma victims. "It allowed him to see his potential," Yuman said. reviewjournal.com -- News: NORM: Roy stuns crowd at the Stardust ************** Siegfried & Roy tiger dies at 25. Sitarra, the grand dame of Siegfried & Roy's cat family, is dead, one day after Roy Horn visited the 25-year-old snow white tiger. Bernie Yuman, Siegfried & Roy's manager, confirmed that the "mother of the royal white tigers of Nevada" died of natural causes in mid-May at Siegfried & Roy's Secret Garden at The Mirage. Yuman characterized Sitarra's passing as "a huge loss for the Siegfried & Roy family. We still grieve and mourn. It was like losing a family member." Adopted by Siegfried & Roy at 3 days old as a gift from the Cincinnati Zoo, Sitarra gave birth to several litters, including cubs named Siegroy, Vegas and Nevada, with Red, White and Blue, who were born on July 4, 1989, in Japan. "She was the matriarch, from the Frontier Hotel to Japan, Radio City Music Hall to the opening at The Mirage," Yuman said. Sitarra's relationship with Horn had to be seen to believed, Yuman said. Female tigers do not allow male tigers near during birth, but Sitarra not only allowed Horn to assist during one of her more difficult deliveries, but "afterwards she picked up the cub in her mouth, put it on Roy's lap and cleaned both of them together," said Yuman, who witnessed it. The day before Sitarra died, "Roy said out of clear blue" that he wanted to go see his animals. Yuman said that during the visit, Horn stood up in his wheelchair in front of Sitarra and said, "You stood in front of him for so many years, today I stand in front of you." reviewjournal.com -- News: NORM: Siegfried & Roy tiger dies at 25 ----------------- 3. IBM International President Tony Wilson’s Magical Adventures ----------------- Message from Tony Wilson - IBM International President 2004 - 2005 Our first Wednesday in London we attended a West End matinee “Anything Goes” (which was superb) before returning to our B&B to get changed to visit the Zodiac Magic Society in North London. Both Mary and Amanda accompanied me and we were picked up by my old friend Freddie Firth who got us to the venue in time for a quick snack before the members arrived at 7.30pm. During my working holiday in the UK 1965/1966 I joined this friendly magic club and have continued to keep in touch with Freddie in his different roles as President, Newsletter editor, and now Emeritus editor as he approaches his 80th year. After a short welcome by President Jean Purdy I was “on again” to open the programme with a mixture of close up and standup magic. The latest novelty squashed tomato got more applause than my other items! After a short tea break the three of us were entertained royally by four of the Zodiac members before I presented Jean with a copy of the 50th issue of Magicana magazine and a Ring 160 Newsletter and IBM Ring banner. Freddie Firth was then called up and I presented him with an IBM President’s citation. A very pleasant evening and great to meet up with old friends and enjoy their company. Amanda and Mary also enjoyed the evening. Thank you Zodiac members once again. After visiting my brother and his wife for lunch on the Tuesday in London the three of us returned again for a lovely meal on the Thursday evening after Mary and I had visited Harrods Department store 10 minutes from my brother’s home in Cadogan Square. Our last full day in London was spent returning to the Chinese Embassy to pick up our passports, now complete with our visas, to allow us into Shanghai for three days in early October. This took 2/3 hours so Amanda “stood guard” `over our luggage at Paddington Station until we returned. Mary and I were heading to stay the weekend in Warwick with my previous Area Manager in Specialist Educational Services, Andrew Clark who had left NZ about two years ago to settle in the area. ----------------- 5. Bruce Cervon, M.C. Board Of Directors ----------------- Message from Bev Bergeron (US) Bruce: Was reading the N.Z. email, which carried your request for nominations for the Castle’s awards. Good! This is so long over due. People who are involved in magic wonder why I yell so much about awards to magicians. I’m one of the poor souls who have traveled the world performing and having the opportunity to see my peers working the boondocks. When I was a student at the University of Texas we had many essays assigned to us for reading. One of the essays was, “The Ivory Towers.” I can’t remember who wrote it, but the author had high credentials and was a professor at a noted university. His premise was: That the universities were building “ivory towers” by blocking the education of their teachers by not allowing them to broaden their education into other fields. They were becoming blind as to what is around them. I feel that the Magic Castle and also the magic publications have also built “Ivory Towers.” There are so many good magicians who are entertaining every day and not receiving the recognition that a few who live in a different area do receive on a regular basis. Let’s hope that many take advantage of this open door. ----------------- 6. Globetrotting Duo Entertain On US Military Bases ----------------- Message from Joycee, the Duchess of Deception Joycee, the Duchess of Deception, and Ryan D Schell, the Trickster are sought after to lie, cheat, and deceive our Armed Forces overseas in Iraq and the Balkans among other US military bases. This globetrotting duo is paid by our US government to lie, cheat, and deceive (and entertain) our troops with their sleight-of-mouth comedy and sleight-of-hand magic. These two set low personal standards for themselves and they consistently fail to achieve them…they promise mindless entertainment in these peacekeeping zones to our soldiers. After witnessing their fast paced, high-energy magic show (and their useless motor skills; skills which have taken them years to master—wasted years which only goes to further prove their lack of any productive interests) you will wonder how much is spent on their therapy and you will want to shout, “I am proud to be an American!” Catch their show and you too will most likely develop unhealthy Freudian thoughts in your mind. Many folks want to worship them or throw money after observing their show. Typically they are paid by the hour and they don’t care how they spend it. Both are available for private hire. Our soldiers are lucky to have this attacking, swindling, and badgering duo in such somber regions while keeping the peace. Joycee and Ryan lighten the mood. They bring smiles and hilarity even if just for an evening…and it’s a proven fact: laughter is great medicine! Joycee is perhaps the top working female magician in Los Angeles. She has been a regular performer at the world-famous Magic Castle in Hollywood, and has been seen in film and on television in Masters of Illusion, The Greatest Magic of Las Vegas, Prime Time Glick, Colombo, Father Dowling, and with Tom Hanks, Wes Craven, and Martin Short. This fine magicienne, whose favorite working props are a tube of lipstick and her high heels, is both a class act and a shot of adrenaline. This will be Joycee’s fifth tour to the Balkans but her first tour of Iraq. CONTACT INFORMATION: Joycee, the Duchess of Deception 951-780-0222 www.joyceesmagic.com ----------------- 7. Every Culture Believes In Some Sort Of Magic ----------------- Message from Nakul Shenoy (India) Rediff.com (a premier news portal of India) has posted my interview with Peter Lamont in three parts. Here are the links to all the three parts: Every culture believes in some sort of magic 'With the notion of the mystic East, the people in the West may find an inexplicable mystery in India somehow more impressive, more mysterious, more mystical,' says magic researcher Peter Lamont. Read on.. http://in.rediff.com/news/2004/aug/17inter.htm Magic is about the effect, not about the trick In the second part of his interview, Peter Lamont delves into how magicians use psychology as an important tool in their performances and what constitutes magic. Magic is not about getting something up your sleeve. It is, he says, about getting something up your sleeve without anybody noticing. Read on.. http://in.rediff.com/news/2004/aug/18inter1.htm Magic brings you closer to reality In this concluding part Peter Lamont expresses his unabashed admiration for Indian magic, though he is certain that the Indian Rope Trick never existed! Re: Female Magician To Tour For The USO ----------------- Message from Mike Robbins (Alaska) Jania Taylor is probably the first female magician to do a solo tour for the USO. Her tour began August 14 in Fairbanks, Alaska entertaining the families of servicemen. Jania will hold the rank of an officer as she travels to Anchorage, Kodiak Island, Ketchikan and other Army and Air Force bases. Jania is a former Society of American Magicians Regional Vice President of the Central Plains States (OH, IN, KY, TN, MI).>>>>>> I just got in from watching her show at Fort Richardson. She had the audience in the palm of her hand. Her show is energetic, funny, and engaging. A few of us also had the chance to have dinner with her last night and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. If you get a chance to see her, don't miss it! ----------------- 13. International Stars Phil “Trustme” Cass And Philippa ----------------- Message from Mike Robbins Giepie Fourie (South Africa) Our Convention in South Africa went off very well with our International Stars Phil “Trustme” Cass and Philippa. Phils innovative sleights, his original routines, his new way of looking at magic makes him one of the best I have seen in a long time. Phil gave us some lectures where he shares his insights with us; his ideas was marvellous. His ideas on the pea and shell game was great, a well as his performance on it amazed all of us. He also gave us a show that stunned all of us here in Bloemfontein, South Africa. They left us with tears in our eyes. Thanks Phil and Philippa A plane cannot fly without a pilot. A car cannot go without an engine. An orchestra cannot play without a conductor. "And a Company, Audience and Magic Convention cannot go without Phil Cass" What a great honour it was to have you gracing our shores here in South Africa. Your brand of Magic, comical humour and lectures were truly unique, inspirational and original! You truly made the Bloemfontein Convention a huge success. Thank you Phil and Philippa for your friendliness, your down to earth manner and wonderful personalities and for mingling with all the Magicians like equals in the true spirit of Brotherhood. I wish you all the success, in bringing Laughter and Magic to the world. Magical Regards Adrian Desmond Smith Vice President & Secretary of The South African Magical Society www.sams.org.za 2. "Thoroughly entertaining! A wicked sense of humour. Brilliant timing. A totally professional performer!" These are a few of the remarks heard during the 2004 South African National Convention when Phil "Trust Me" Cass attended as guest lecturer and performer. We are privileged to have met and been entertained by such a wonderful couple. Thank you Phil and Philippa. Christine Tait President: South African Magic Council ----------------- 14. Hong Kong And Adelaide convention 2005?? ----------------- Message from Ken Warner (Aust) Ken Warner here in Melbourne. It’s nice to see advance notice of the Palmertson convention. I hope they keep updating on your site. I’m planning to attend. Would also like to know of any other convention plans that are coming soon. I believe there is one in Hong Kong and the Adelaide convention should be sometime in 2005. I've only missed one Adelaide convention and that was because I did not know it was on till it was over. I look forward to convention updates and also to reading your magazine every week. ----------------- 15. Ray Roch’s New Website ----------------- Message from Ray Roch (Canada) Paul Romhany listed a few websites he designed in the latest issue of the e-zine. #281 (Mine was shown as www3.telus.net/public/a3a63332) I spent quite a bit of time with Paul Romhany while he developed this new site for me and it's fantastic! Soon you'll be able to see it at www.rayroch.com Check out the video clip he did on the media page, It's kind of neat! We finished with the website in the nick of time as Paul finally received his passport/visa and dashed off to catch a plane to meet Natalie in Hawaii yesterday. He was really getting concerned about his cruise ship gig because of a delay in receiving it, and I was there to see his reaction when it finally arrived on his doorstep. (I don't think there was single piece of furniture he didn't leap over in his jumps of joy!) He's a great guy and we spent some memorable moments laughing and joking about with a mutual friend, Andrew Gerardi www.allandrew.com, a mentalist who kept us in stitches with his comedic shenanigans. ----------------- 16. Magic "Pop Cap" Give Away - Jamie-G ----------------- Message from Jamie-G (Canada) Effect: The magician calls over some children and asks if they would like to see a magic trick. In doing so the magician then goes into his pocket and takes out a pop cap. (White plastic kind) He tells the children that this pop cap is very magical. The magician goes on to tell the children that when he was about their age a magician told him about this magical pop cap and after he saw the magic he was able to keep it. The magician takes the pop cap and puts it flat in his empty hand, then the magician states that you must have faith in yourself and that you are a special person to get this to work. At this point the magician then picks a child to help him (I pick the littlest child to help me) the magician tells the child now for this to work you must have faith in yourself. Now are you ready to do some magic. The magician covers the pop cap with his other hand and gets the child to blow on his hands. When the magician opens his hand the pop cap has turned solid gold. The magician then gives the pop cap to the child and tells him that he must take good care of the pop cap or the magic will wear off. (In saying this so the foil will not wear off) The child leaves with a permasmile and that your job is done. Props: You will need two plastic pop caps (I use the white ones) and some gold foil. You can find these caps everywhere there should be no problem finding these by the hundreds if you wanted to. This is a great close up effect for when you are doing a show for children and you happen to see a special needs child. This effect is also a nice ice breaker when you are out on the town. Set Up: O.K. first you have to get the gold foil on the pop cap. You must take you time on putting the foil on. It is very hard to get the foil on rounded corners you must go slow and take your time rubbing the foil on Rub softly and slow and you will find in time that it (the foil) will take to it. Note: This is a great effect and the cost is nothing. I guess the question is: Is it worth it to put a little work into something to make a little child smile? Also you don't have to use the gold you can use the silver foil as well. You don't even need the foil just use normal paint and just paint the pop caps if you really want to the do the effect you can use anything. I'm just giving a few ideas’ that’s all. I'm not saying it has to be done like this. Do it your way or whatever works for you. Real Time: Here's what we are doing, tell the story above or make up a story that works for your style magic. Pick any child you want. I usually pick the smallest child or if there is a special needs child around I will use them for this effect but really any child will do. In the switching of the pop caps I myself use a thumb pinch but you can use any method that works for you, example would be a pocket wand, a magic coin, a silk, paper money or you could already have the gold cap it your one hand the entire time and just make it look like you put the normal one in that hand or whatever works for you. Special Note: When the cap goes from normal to gold try to look surprised and use a little bit of acting when doing this the children are always watching you and they will notice if you make any facial expressions and this will help this effect 100%. This is a must try trick and remember to make it your own when you do that the trick is easier to do. Trust me I like to keep it simple. I don't like the really hard tricks to do. The small and easy one's work just as well. Whatever you use gold foil or silver foil-take your time, you don't want the foil to rip. You give a child a giveaway especially with magic you make your magic 100% stronger and better. The gold foil is very hard to find so take care when using it. ----------------- 17. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 127 The Variety Artists Club of New Zealand - Annual Celebrity Roast - 2002 On Tuesday the 27th of August 2002, the V A C (Variety Artists Club of New Zealand), held their annual ‘roast’ in honour of ‘N.Z.’s Rock n Roll legend’ (leg - end), Tom Sharplin. The well - known N.Z. hypnotist, Guy Cater, who was officiating, ask me to ‘Do a few words ’ on Tom - that he would ‘read out on the night’. I thought that perhaps everyone might get a laugh, or at least a smile, from my Ten Cents worth. Here’s the TRUE story that I sent to Guy. Sometime during the years of 1972/73, I met Auckland promoter, David J. Mc Kee. David managed a band called ‘NOAZARK’, who had a minor hit record called - ‘Money's Made to Burn’, which was produced on Dave's own label: ‘Kontact’ Recording Co. Ltd. He also managed and recorded various vocalists, among them, Brent Brodie, Angela Ayers, Maria Dallas and, TOM SHARPLIN! During those years, we worked or toured with all of these wonderful entertainers, courtesy of Dave Mc Kee, who was also managing us at the time as well. The Fire/Yogi/ Mime acts worked well with ‘Rock’ Shows. Tom Sharplin is one of those people who, for one reason or another, kind of ‘sticks’ in your memory like a fly sticks to gum paper. Now remember, I'm talking (at the time of writing) ‘THIRTY YEARS AGO’, so this story, like it’s storyteller, may be ‘A LITTLE RUSTY AROUND THE HINGES’! David McKee had organized an afternoon Kids Show in a hall or theatre, in Hamilton or Cambridge or somewhere like that. During the show, a little skit/pantomime was enacted that involved some of the members of Noazark and Tom Sharplin - where they were apparently going to perform some sort of ‘operation’ on Tom. From a ‘KID'S’' point of view, and a hell of a lot of the parents, the scenario that was about to unfold would throw them all into the realms of a -‘Psychotic Blood Bath of Horror’! Terrible yells where emitting from Tom's mouth as he was ‘forcibly’ held down, then someone (one of the band members), wandered on stage, brandishing a bloody great handsaw! Tom's shrieks intensified as they apparently started to: ‘Saw His Leg Off’! Consequently, when Tom and his leg ‘parted company’, and he and his ‘leg’ were carted off to the opposite sides of the stage, amid realistic, bloodcurdling screams of terror, several kids, who were by now scared witless, proceeded to ‘Fill Their Pants’! The audience was in hysterics! The smell was atrocious! You might say that after that exemplary farce, the ‘Proverbial’, really did hit the fan! I don't know about now, but in those days, very few people were aware that Tom had/has a false leg, and even less would have believed it, after having watched the way he danced around during his performance! After that ‘Never to be Forgotten’ performance from Tom Sharplin, I decided that it would indeed be okay to perform various ‘Dangerous Tricks’ at ‘Kid's Magic Shows’; demonstrating various ‘Death Defying and Marvellous Effects’. For instance, ‘Swallowing Razor Blades’, only to regurgitate them back up, tied onto a length of cotton or, how to ‘Hammer a six inch nail up your nose!’ Then there was ‘The String Thing’ (Psychic Surgery). This entails, ‘Swallowing six feet of string, then cutting an incision into your stomach by stabbing yourself with a knife, so that you can pull the ‘bloodied’ string out from inside your stomach - Through the Bleeding Wound! “I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO SAY - THANKYOU TOM SHARPLIN, FOR YOUR INNOVATIVE DEMONSTRATION ON NOT ONLY HOW TO GET ONESELF REBOOKED FOR AT LEAST DOUBLE YOUR FEE, BUT ALSO A VALUABLE LESSON ON: ‘HOW TO ENTERTAIN SENSITIVE LITTLE KIDDIES’!” As you all probably realise, although the story is factual, there is just a ‘Little Bit’ of colourful ‘writers licence’ in the above tale. Hey, this was a ‘ROAST’ and - “THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT”! ------------------ 18.
