IBM International President Tony Wilson’s Magical Adventures ----------------- Message from Tony Wilson - IBM International President 2004 - 2005 After a very pleasant weekend with Andrew that included visiting Warwick Castle, a drink in the best pub in the UK, a visit to Stratford upon Avon, the Cotswolds, Canal Boats, Birmingham and numerous other places, we left from Coventry station for Manchester to stay three days with Quentin Reynolds, well known children’s entertainer who has an apartment in downtown Manchester minutes from the town and railway station. Quentin and I had been in touch by phone a day or so before our arrival and he had asked if Mary and I would like to go through to Blackpool on our first night staying with him to see an excellent ventriloquist. Naturally I said yes. This we did, together with his friend Phillip Partridge, and the journey took about one hour. Mary had never been to Blackpool before so was impressed with the lights, piers, entertainment and of course some Blackpool rock! (candy) We also enjoyed the talents of Paul Zerdin with his three separate characters (dummies) Reminded me of my friend Jon Zealando and his three dummies. Sorry two. Jon is the third! Just joking of course. Day two in Manchester was shopping and getting out of Quentin’s way while he prepared a lavish meal and drinks for over 20 friends, some of whom were traveling 3/4/hours for the party and some continuing on for the Order of the Magi function that night that had been arranged in our honour. At the afternoon function I did a ten minute presentation and presented IBM Ring 160 Banners and copies of Magicana to the Presidents of the Northern Magic Circle and the Mahatama Magic Circle who were attending. . John “Sly” Smith and his wife June took us to the evening function which was held in the Irish Heritage Rooms where the Order of the Magi meet every fortnight. Once again I opened, and several of their members entertained after my presentation. The President of the Order of the Magi kindly presented me with honorary membership and a lovely badge mounted on a wooden plinth. I also presented a Ring 160 banner and a 50th Jubilee copy of New Zealand’s only magic magazine Magicana. I was also able to meet Cynthia Neptune, current President of IBM British Ring 25 who was present with her consort Betty Laing. Cynthia will be presiding at the Eastbourne Convention later next month. The following evening Quentin, Mary and I drove to the home of John “Sly” Smith and June where we had a very pleasant evening talking magic, visiting John’s den and office, viewing his props, and enjoying a three course meal June had prepared. John is a long time pro from the Manchester area who has specialized in children’s magic. The next morning we were leaving for Hull and my fourth visit to Eddie and Amy Dawes (since 1965) when we first met at a British Ring 25 Convention in Wales. We are slowly heading north towards Scotland via Brit Rail pass which we decided a long time ago was the best way for us to get around the UK quickly, safely and conveniently. Next week our visit to Hull and the Hull Magician’s Circle. ----------------- 5. Richard Webster’s New Cold Reading CD ----------------- Message from Martin Breese (UK)  I'm happy to announce that we have two new CDs from the talented and creative New Zealand magician, Richard Webster. Richard recorded his first tape on cold reading with us in 1986. "Commercial Cold Reading" is still our biggest selling recording. When Richard was in London in 2001, I persuaded him to record a sequel, which is "Further Commercial Cold Reading." This year, Richard has provided us with two new CDs. The first of these, "Mastering Cold Reading," has just been released. The second CD, "How to Profit from Cold Reading" is a superb tape on how to market your skills as a cold reader. It will be available in about two months. Each CD is priced at £13.75 plus postage. These CDs are all available from. Martin Breese International, 10 Hanover Crescent, Brighton, E. Sussex BN2 9SB, UK (www.abracadabra.co.uk) or from most US dealers. Richard is also a highly prolific author and has written 24 books for magicians. We published "Good Luck from Beijing" fourteen years ago, and it is still in print. The standard in New Zealand must be extremely high to produce a magician/mentalist of Richard's calibre. Martin Breese, Brighton. ----------------- 7. Ken Brooke’s Memories And Stories ----------------- Message from Terry Herbert (UK) A book is in the process of being written full of memories and stories of a most unique man Ken Brooke. Steve Cook the compiler emphasises that this is not a book of tricks and routines as there has already been several books published of Ken's routines but simply a collection of anecdotes and memories from those who remember the good times spent in Ken's company. Already Steve has a wealth of material from Ken's many friends but would very much like to hear from others who knew Ken and who may have a story to tell. He would particularly like to contact some of his American friends such as Pete Biro and Scotty York & Ricky Jay. Unfortunately Steve is not yet on email but he has given me permission to publish his telephone number and address for those who would like to contact him. It is as follows: Steve Cook Telephone Number : +1472 349753 19 Marcus Street Grimsby N.E Lincolnshire DN34 4DS England He also stresses that the book is not being produced for personal gain and any monies above production cost will benefit a well known Charity. ----------------- 8. I am always interested in getting folks interested in seeing some wonderful magic, either stage or close-up from some of the best seats in the house on my judging staff. It will take just one morning out of the convention and I have never not enjoyed the magic that has been presented. Also, I understand that Stan Goudge is trying to coordinate all the folks from down under that are interested in judging so that in support of the out-going President and down under down home boy, Tony Wilson. So get a hold of Stan or drop me (miked@magician.org) a line if you are going to be in Reno and sounds like something you would enjoy. ----------------- 11. Magic On The Beach Celebrates It’s Tenth Year ----------------- Message from Maria Ibanez - SAM National 2nd Vice President Last Chance to Get FREE DVD (See last paragraph) Dear Magic Enthusiast, I want to extend an invitation to you to join us at Ring 45 as we celebrate our Tenth Annual Magic on the Beach convention, October 22, 23 & 24, 2004. It’s hard to believe we will be celebrating our tenth Magic on the Beach! To help celebrate we are moving to a brand new location, the Wyndham Miami Beach Resort, (formerly the Doral Beach Resort). The Wyndham is a beautiful hotel located right on the beach. It is just five minutes from famous South Beach. IMPORTANT NOTE: To guarantee your reservation at our group rate, you must reserve your room before Sept. 22nd, 2004. As for talent, this year we are bringing the “Clever & Seriously Funny”, Gaetan Bloom. To learn more about this genius of magic, read Kevin James’ story on Gaetan in the April 2003 issue of Magic Magazine. MOB will honor Gaetan with the Florida Magicians Lifetime Achievement Award. Past recipients include Fantasio, Amazing Randi, Norm Nielsen and Rene Lavand. Both Randi & Fantasio will be on hand to assist Kevin James as he presents Gaetan with this most prestigious honor. While working in Paris, Kevin was a guest at Gaetan’s home… for almost three years! Needless to say, they are best of friends. It will be great to re-unite these two. Oh, did I mention Kevin James will also perform? Kevin is also a very creative inventor and performer. Both Gaetan and Kevin are worth the price of registration themselves. However, in keeping with tradition, we are introducing another amazing performer, from Spain, Malakatin. If that’s not enough, we’re also bringing Denny Haney, (formerly of Denny & Lee). Rounding out the line-up is Glenn Farrington. Glenn is an exceptional close-up performer and lecturer. If the name sounds familiar, he along with friend and partner Rich Bloch produce a “pretty good” convention themselves, the “World Magic Seminar”. In addition to these fantastic acts, past MOB lecturers and performers, Jon Racherbaumer and the “Amazing” James Randi will perform and lecture. Registrants will enjoy a “Pre-Show”, Close-up and Cocktail party prior to the Saturday Evening Stage Show, International Dealers room, Lectures, Spouse event, Contests, Close-up Show and many surprises are planned. Early Bird registrants will also receive a FREE Historical DVD which chronicles the first ten Magic on the Beach Conventions. This is a $25.00 value; however, NONE will be sold. The only way to get one of these historic DVD’s is to have your registration postmarked by September 1st. That’s it, it’s FREE! So don’t delay, register TODAY! Thanks see you in October. Sincerely, Rick Del Vecchio, Chairman ----------------- 13. Melted - Jamie-G ----------------- Message from Jamie-G (Canada) (A blue deck of bicycle deck of card is needed) Effect: Magician takes a spectators chosen card and magicly melts half of the card off by using the C.D. right in front of their spectators eyes. Props: C.D case, C.D., one gimmicked card half treated with foil and a deck of bicycle cards. Note: All you need to do to make this card is have some foil. You just put the foil covering half of the front of the card. Your card should look like this: Say if you are using the two of hearts. You should only see half of card which means you will see the two and the heart underneath it but if you turn the card upside down that half will be covered in foil. Just use the silver foil for this trick. Note: If you happen to lose or damage your card you can either contact us to replace it (for a fee) or you can use double stick tape and use aluminium foil. Just put the foil over half of the card. Set-Up: Before you even get started with this trick, this is for some one who has been in magic for a while. Also acting plays a good part in this trick. The gimmick card is on the bottom of the deck. You have to have the duplicate card in the middle of the deck held with a pinkie break. Method: We are going to force the non-gimmicked card by riffling down the deck and having the spectator stop you anywhere. Your spectator grabs the card from the pinkie break. The card that you just forced on him/her. Put the cards back on the deck once the spectator has their card. Take the card back and show it to them one more time. Place this card on the bottom of the deck. It will be under your gimmicked card. Turn the deck over to show them their card on the bottom. Double lift the cards showing them their card. While showing them their card both front and back, you are turning the deck over with your other hand so they don't notice. The back should now be facing up. Take their card and put it on the top of the deck face down. At this point you can put the deck of cards down and concentrate on the C.D. Take the C.D. and make sure the silver face is face up. While you are making up you patter you have to take a sneak peak of the gimmicked card to locate which side the foil is on. Take you card and place just the silver half on the top of the C.D. Put your hand on the half that is on the C.D. and pretend to press on it really hard. Blow some hot breath on it to make it look like you are adding some heat to it or you can use a lighter or use whatever you wish. Next you leave the card on the C.D. and you go back to the deck of cards. Show the back of the cards to be all the same. Note that your duplicate card is the card on the very top of the deck. You can either fan out the cards starting at the top of the deck and by skipping a couple of cards then show that they are all different or you can do a pressure spread. This is where you put your cards on the table or mat and by putting pressure in the middle of the deck and spread them out. If you practice you will be able to do this. After showing all the cards, flip over the gimmicked card to show that half of the card is now melted into the color of the C.D. Patter: Basically what you are going to do is tell the spectator that you are going to take his/her card and do a miracle. You are going to explain that with either heat from a lighter or by rubbing a pencil or something it is going to cause a nuclear reaction. Tell them that whatever you are using has the power to melt anything. And once the trick is done and you flip the card over you are proving this method. This is just one of many effects used with the foil system. Note: The foil system is by far the best system to create any kind of special effects. If you want to know about the foil or if you need any foil the please feel free to contact myself. jamiegmagic@aol.com Right now the is the fastest and coolest way to melt a card not a lot of special moves using this system should open the door of giveing magic a hole new names some famous magicians are doing this system as we speak (no names sorry). You remember that there are two kinds of foil here gold and silver each can do some thing different or you can use the both think about this for a minute you take a silver coin and a gold coin touch the too a now when you pull the two coin's away the gold coin now has silver on it and the silver coin now has gold on it .It must be magic. It is fun to use the silver foil and the gold foil and get remember it can be used for any thing. And the most part have fun and go slow with it this is a wonderful system. ----------------- 14. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 129 ‘The ‘Voodoo Girls’ At various times in the Saga I have mentioned the name David McKee, a promoter and record producer from Auckland. I don't know what David is doing these days or even if he is still around, but I would sure like to get in touch and have a chat about the ‘Good Old Days’! What a character, about 5ft 8in – long fair hair and a face that reminded me of an impish pixie. He looked like he had never seen the light of day, and I always imagined that if he ever tried to sunbathe, he would vanish in a puff of smoke - he was also an inveterate chain smoker! He came up with some great ideas at times - well, HE thought so. One of the ‘classics’ that I ‘fondly’ recall was when he decided that my ‘Yogi Act’ needed some ‘spicing up’. This entailed getting me not just One, but TWO - ‘Make The Men Drool All Over The Place’, very attractive, Very Naked stage assistants, courtesy of Rainton Haistie, the infamous owner of the two equally infamous strip joints on Karangahape road, the ‘Pink Pussy’ and the ‘Pink Panther’ clubs! During this ‘moment of madness’, Dave also came up with a ‘New Title’ for my act: ‘THE HELLFIRE SHOW’ with the Psychic Witchdoctor ORCHANTÉ And His – ‘VOODOO GIRLS’! To make absolutely sure that every body knew what they were getting, in this ‘Unprecedented Presentation’, he ‘tastefully’ had large black dots inserted in the middle of the ‘O’s of the word - ‘VOODOO’, in all the publicity posters and leaflets – It was most, TIT-illating. ‘Psychic Witchdoctor? – I ASK YOU!’ “Bloody hell Dave, what were you thinking of, even worse, why did I let you get away with it! Perhaps it had something to do with us both being - ‘NUTTERS”! I’m not quite sure, even to this day, just exactly how these two ‘strippers’ were supposed to ‘assist’ me, all they had to do was bump, grind and gyrate their voluptuous bodies in time to my music. Now if they were to have done this during my magic show - I mean, just think about the ‘misdirection’ possibilities, I could have created miracles! The first show that David organised, that incorporated ‘The Girls’, was at the ‘Great Northern Hotel’, which was situated down the bottom of Queen St. just up from, and on the opposite side of the road from the main Post Office. With all the rebuilding that has gone on in downtown Auckland City since ‘I left home’, I wouldn’t be surprised if it has long since been torn down. Now I had worked that hotel on many occasions in the past – and it was where I used to meet my old friend Al Horobin (now deceased), for drinks. With two characters like Al and I, it didn’t take long for the Manager to get to know us and vice versa, especially with my close - up magic sessions in the bar, that just seemed to ‘kinda’ happen, apart from my shows in the main lounge room. The thing is, the ‘Great Northern’ was a very nice hotel, with a very respectable clientele, which included various International guests staying in the house. It wasn’t until an hour or so before ‘Show Time’, that the Manager (whose name I can’t recall) became aware that TWO STRIPPERS were in the show as well. He nearly had a fit! He grabbed hold of Dave and told him there was: “No way the show was going on, with those ‘Two Birds’ In It’!” “Orchanté can do HIS show, but NOT with those ‘Slappers’, in it!” OOPS, PANIC STATIONS! ‘What ya gonna do! ‘Call ‘Ghostbusters?’ ‘NO, call Sally Phillips!’ I have mentioned elsewhere in my saga that, back in the sixties, Sally occasionally stepped in as an ‘emergency’ assistant for a few select artists/magicians when the need arose. Following a frantic telephone call, Sally arrived at the ‘Northern’ in record time, dressed to kill and looking every bit the Lady, she is. After a very quick rehearsal - of sorts, the show went on. No problems - well what do you expect, when you’ve got two Pros’ on hand! I MUST relate Sally’s story one day, and that of her husband Derek Metzger, a very well known N.Z. singer. Sally and Derek now reside in Sydney. Page 130 Delving into the depths of my ‘bottomless’ aluminium trunk, (which holds over 35 years worth of magazines, newspaper clippings, posters, leaflets and God only what else), a poster ‘floated’ up, advertising The ‘Hellfire’ Show - complete with the ‘Naked Voodoo Girls’, at the Thunderbird Valley Inn, together with the ‘Impressions’ Show Band. I guess the Girl’s, and their ‘knockers’, finally got to - ‘knock the punters socks off’ – I don’t think anybody really noticed me, even though I did try to keep ‘abreast’ of things! Think I had finish this now, before I make any more - ‘boobs’! ------------------ 15.
