IBM International President Tony Wilson’s Magical Adventures ----------------- Message from Tony Wilson - IBM International President 2004 - 2005 Eddie Dawes met us at the local train station near their home and took Mary and myself home for a lovely three course lunch prepared by Amy. After some local sightseeing we got ready to attend the Annual Magical Quiz between five magic societies held in Hull this year at the Hull Magicians’ Circle clubrooms. The five competing societies were represented by three members from South Lancashire, Hull, York, Barnsley and Huddersfield. Max Shepherd, a local dealer from York, made a great job of running the entertaining quiz in front of a large crowd of members and supporters. A great night. As Mary and I were guests we had a chance to mix and mingle as we knew some of the audience was returning the next evening for my presentation. The following day Eddie and Amy took us further a field and we even saw the North Sea from Bridlington as well as a lot of the surrounding country. My presentation that night to the Hull Magicians’ Circle was well received and following a gift to the Society I was also able to present Eddie with an IBM President’s Citation which, for those of you who have been in magic for a long time would understand the immense contribution Eddie has made to the history of magic. Thank you Eddie and Amy for a wonderful two days of magic and hospitality. Also for sharing your study and admiring your wonderful book collection once again. We left Hull the next morning to stay the weekend with my daughter in Durham so we had a break from magic presentations, writing columns such as this and running the IBM from a laptop computer on global roaming. Next week, our visit to Aberdeen, Scotland. ----------------- 5. Rob Stiff - The King of Thieves ----------------- Message from Walter Zaney Blaney (US) Please read the story at the website of magic dealer Bazar de Magia: www.bazardemagia.com/robstiff A message on Ring 2100 today suggested that everyone do so. It is in regard to Rob Stiff's unethical business practices with his Magic Makers Inc. (note: no connection with the ethical Magic Makers Inc. of Gerry and Leonora Frenette in Canada). Stiff's practice of ripping-off many close-up magic inventors has been going on way too long. He has seriously hurt some of our finest magic inventors. His practices are well known now among most magic dealers as well as a growing number of magicians around the world. It should stop. The first proper action should be for magic magazines to consider refusing Stiff's ads..on their own, an individual decision. And secondly, the dealers who handle Stiff's wares should consider no longer carrying his rip-off items (and again, by making their own individual decision), in fairness to our magic inventors who have created these original items for magicians to enjoy around the world. You are killing "the goose that lays the golden egg". Here again is the website to look at: www.bazardemagia.com/robstiff Walter Zaney Blaney ----------------- 6. Amos Levkovitch - Finished Filming "Otherwise Engaged" ----------------- Message from Amos Levkovitch (US) Thank you for your wonderful Newsletter, I wish it is a Daily Newsletter.. Amos Levkovitch has finished filming last week-end in Los Angeles a magician role in Warner Bros. movie named "Otherwise Engaged". The movie is directed by Rob Reiner, staring Jennifer Aniston and Kevin Costner. (Thank you Max Maven.) In the movie, I had to produce a dove for Sara (Jennifer Aniston) and Beau (Kevin Costner) in an out-doors Casablanca Ball setting, tightly surrounded  by about one hundred "guests", crew and cameras. Like this was not enough trouble, the dove had to fly after production over the heads of the actors, and up to the open sky. What the camera did not "see" is that every time after flying up to the sky, the trained dove circled back and came back down to my hand, ready to be loaded for the next take..  After filming the segment, and since the dove did so well, she received an unlimited amount of her favorite snack. The dove ate so much, that the next day in my show for the TAOM convention in Houston; she was too heavy to fly and was 15 seconds late flying back to the stage from the back of the theatre. When she finally made it, I was already off the stage and the dove landed on the MC's (Mac King) hands. Mac King brilliantly used the incident for some hilariously funny remarks. In fact Mac was so funny, that members of the audience that I spoke with after the show refused to believe that this was a mistake. They had no doubt that this was a planed "mistake". Thank you Mac King. You can find out everything you always wanted to know about doves at www.amosmagic.com and click on Doves Are Performers, Too…. ----------------- 8. Monash Young Magicians Club & Out Of The Hat ----------------- Message from Brenton Foale (Aust) To all members of the Monash Young Magicians Club, and readers of Out of the Hat.. I have to apologise for the recent absence of our publication, "Out of the Hat". The magazine hasn't disappeared or vanished, so don't worry. I have been snowed under with work, personal issues, poor health, and not enough hours in a day, but the magazine WILL be returning shortly, so please check your inboxes soon for what promises to be an excellent issue. I also have to apologise to members of the Monash Young Magicians Club for the fact we haven't held a meeting this school term yet. There are several reasons for this, besides my poor health and personal, family issues. One being the lack of attendance of members at meetings during the first half of the year, causing myself to be out of pocket for hall hire. May I remind you all that the club would only survive if you attend? I tried calling all of you several times, and have sent individual e mails, yet no replies or return calls ever came. Due to the lack of members attending, and having to pay high hall hire costs, the Monash Young Magicians Club will return to our original venue as of next term. Please keep an eye out for updates in your inboxes. We MAY be relocating as of mid 2005, to the old Oakleigh Court House (currently under development). More on this as developments arise. ----------------- 12. 'Ellis In Wonderland' ----------------- Message from Tim Ellis & Sue-Anne Webster (Aust) Just a word to let the Aussies know that some 'advance copies' of our new DVDs should be available at the upcoming Sean Taylor Superday in Sydney, September 18-19. For the rest of the world, the release date will be one month later in mid-October and the DVDs will be distributed internationally through Murphy's Magic Supplies. Each of these are crammed with over three hours of magic, teaching, and special features including segments on Black Art, MagicSports, Floorshows, Strolling Magic, Thumbtips, and a 30 minute 'Road Movie' filmed during our recent world lecture tour. The third DVD is all about the FISM Award-winning cups & balls routine 'Runaround Sue' (the one with the milkshake finale), and over the course of one hour you'll be taught everything you could ever want to know about the how and why of this act, plus you'll see the evolution of the routine through five different versions of it. Silver Backed Playing Card - Jamie-G ----------------- Message from Jamie-G (Canada) Making: This card has been treated with the magic foil. This is great because you can use it with any poker size deck. This is possible because the foil is on the back of the card and the card has its normal face on the front of the card. If the foil starts to peel all you need to do is get more foil place the foil over top the peeling part of the card and rub the foil with the bottom of a marker and this will keep your foil card in place. Working: What is great about this card is you will be able to do some awesome card magic that no one has ever seen or heard of before.(This goes for laymen and magicians) It also opens your world to this new concept of using this foil to make killer close up magic. When I started about 15 years ago using this system at my magic club I was blowing other magician's that have been doing magic for 50 years out of the water. The great part about this system is if you don't tell any magicians about this foil system they won't be able to copy your work and this is always a good thing at least to me it is. Effect: A spectator picks a card out of the deck. The magician then takes the card places the card face up on a CD rubs the card on the CD and than tell the spectator that he just melted the whole back of the card with the CD by only using magic. At this point just watch their eyes pop out. (I'm going to keep this effect as easy as I can if you have been in magic for a while change it to suit you) Props: You need this gimmick card, a normal deck of playing cards (poker size) and a computer CD or a music CD or any kind of CD that is totally silver on the back or front of it. Note: Make sure whatever your gimmick card is to remove the normal card that is in the deck you won't need it for this effect. Set Up: Your gimmick card at the bottom of the deck. You are going to get ready to force the card on your spectator. The force that I use is the Hindu shuffle. You can use whatever force you like best. Once you have the card forced on the spectator you place it face up on your CD Take you hand and rub it across the card. Tell your spectator that the magic has now happened. With the magical pass their card has now melted the CD and the silver has now stuck to the card. Set Up#-2: A little different handling is instead of using a CD you can place the card face up on the table and rub the face of the card with a silver coin or a piece of silver jewellery and say by magic you are going to make the back of the card silver with the help of the coin or jewellery or whatever you are going to use, and a lot of magic to change their card. Note: Make sure when you force the gimmick card that you don't flash the back of it or the game is over. For the most part have fun with it and make the magic yours. I'm here just to give you ideas only you can take your magic to the next level. Whatever you do not give in and tell others how to do it, this will spoil a great effect like this. Have you tried the magic foil system, it’s a new way to do killer close up magic if you haven't you are missing out on a whole new world. Contact me for more info. This next trick is like real magic hope you enjoy. ----------------- 18. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 13 June 1958 - Goodbye Raupunga/Wairoa Hello Auckland My father is transferred to Manurewa, a town 14 miles south of Auckland city, as Officer in Charge of the local police station. The police house was filthy, run down, and in a dilapidated condition. Mum ‘exploded. Understandable really, considering we had just left a police house in Raupunga, which was only 4 years old! Mum was on the warpath! The New Zealand Police Department didn’t know what hit them, (made a nice change - it had been me in the ‘firing line’ for the last 18 months or so). We were re-located to Papakura - the next town, 5 miles south of Manurewa, into rented accommodation - courtesy of the Police department, while a new Police house was being built. 18 months later, we finally moved into the new house. For all you New Zealand magicians in Auckland, who work Shopping malls, the South Mall shopping complex at Manurewa is where the new Police house and Station was situated. Also, and a very, very large amount of lawn, took up that entire area and a very large, tall Pine tree grew on the front lawn (perhaps it’s still there?). Every weekend, starting Saturday morning around 10 a.m., I cut the grass, got finished some time (I was allowed meal breaks and a night’s sleep) so, next time you’re performing at South Mall, take a good hard look at the size of the place, think of me pushing a lawn mower, then, bow your head and shudder! And what did the New Zealand Police Department give me for those months of My Blood, Sweat, and Toil - Sweet F.A. As far as I was concerned, slave labour was alive and well in New Zealand. Sure, most kids mowed the ‘Family Lawns’ for pocket money, usually done in an hour, Not Two Bloody Days On - ‘Government Owned Property’! Phew, all that grass has been ‘mulching’ in my system for 43 years. The only thing I gained from mowing the lawns was access to the Two-stroke fuel in the mower, to practice Fire Eating. Two stroke! It tasted disgusting! Nevertheless, I persevered! (More about this later!) Where were we? Can’t see for grass clippings - oh, yes - Papakura. Lived there for 18 months, by which time I’ve turned 15 years old, and have already developed a ‘Magic Act’, and being paid for it. The routine was: Reach into the air, and a ‘silk’ pops magically into appearance (it’s in the crook of your arm, in a single fold of your coat sleeve. By throwing your arm straight out, the natural springiness of the silk propels it into the air). Having caught it, I rolled it up, blew on it, and it ‘changed’ into a red ball, which I bounced on the floor and then caught (not too difficult, if you’ve got a ping-pong ball painted bright red, with a hole in it), and switched it for a real one. I then rolled it up and down between my fingers, vanished it, then re-produced it from behind my knee - popped it in my mouth, pretended to swallow, tapped my head, and produced it, apparently from my backside (That always got a laugh). Apparently, bang ball on the back of neck, then show ball in mouth. Apparently take from mouth, then place ball in a clear container. Tap head again, and ‘Another’ ball appears between the lips. I repeated this very quickly - producing around 6/7 balls; with the last one, I did a couple of ‘moves’, and then went into the ‘Multiplying (Billiard) Ping-Pong Balls. (I had two ball holders made out of socks, with elastic in the open end at just the right tension to hold the balls, but not too tightly). The last ball, I blew on, and it turned ‘blue’ - ‘vanished’ it, then seemingly ‘picked something’ from the air. I stroked the ‘invisible something’ 3 or 4 times, then on the last stroke, my fingers pinched the corner of the silk, (which was in the ball, of course) and instantly, a blue silk ‘materialises’ as I rapidly stroke downwards; throw silk into air (for misdirection) and drop blue ball into my coat pocket and palmed a thimble. Page 14 I passed the silk over the finger, whipped it away, and showed the thimble had ‘appeared’ on my fingertip. I then went into a thimble manipulation routine, and finished up with a thimble on each finger of both hands (I had thimble holders under my coat lapels - made them myself from cardboard). I then ‘changed‘ one thimble into a coin, and went into a ‘Miser’s Dream’ routine - did the lit cigarette in the coat, (no explanation necessary) and finished with a simple but extremely strong piece of magic which always was my finale, no matter how much the act itself was changed. The effect: (coat off, sleeves rolled up) - a small piece of tissue paper, about the size of one piece of toilet paper - set fire to it, at all times showing both hands empty - rub ashes between palms, and produce a bank note. In later years, I would have Ten $20 appear - that fooled the magicians! Sometimes, on a good week, it was Ten $Fifty notes, not for long though, food, petrol, and Mr 10% agent etc. took care of most of it! ------------------ 19.
