GOOD For You Paul Daniels ----------------- Message from Paul Kilshaw (Aust) IBM #183 Victoria Magic Circle Re: Paul Daniels Walks Off Reality TV Show I have always been a fan of yours and in my younger years I loved watching your Friday night weekly spots on our local BBC station. Somehow I could not see you being a shill for something as mundane as a reality TV show. You and Mcgoo are way beyond that, and the entertainment value of that kind of programming would really take away from your charismatic, fun loving presence. It is sad that we have to think people are relying on tripe as entertainment! We have more and more of that popping up on all our stations and it is really beginning to get to me, call me old fashioned but I love a good plate spinner, or a contortionist, or a musical artist, and the list goes on. I don't need to be bombarded by people eating bugs or living in a pseudo world to make what point? If you really want to see a farm check out my uncle he is 87 and still works it. YES with his palm pilot and his 1/4 million dollar Tractor, His dishwasher however is 84 and is getting a little worn out but still manages. ----------------- 3. Magic In Madrid ----------------- Message from Vito Lupo Ascanio Memorial Convention, Vito Lupo to appear at the Florida Park Theater in Parque El Retiro, in Madrid's main park, an old fashioned Musical Hall which has seen the grace and royal magic of Fred Kapps. This two-day convention organized by the president of Madrid's Magic Club, Agustín Leal, also features a lecture by Vito Lupo. Last years invited guest, Michael Ammar. ----------------- 4. IBM International President Tony Wilson’s Magical Adventures ----------------- Message from Tony Wilson - IBM International President 2004 - 2005 We travelled down to Eastbourne by train to attend the IBM British Ring 25 Convention, and checked into the headquarters hotel, the Lansdowne, right on the waterfront with a wonderful view of the sea. We had an impressive four course meal and unpacked ready for a busy six nights. The 53 dealers were open on the next day for business for the early birds and it was a good chance to meet friends and members of the British Ring executive, most of which were staying with us at the headquarters hotel. The official opening took place on the Thursday morning by the President of British Ring 25 Cynthia Neptune, followed by an opening variety show. The ladies were catered for that afternoon by a presentation of “A brief history of unmentionables”. Mary will give you more information! While Mary attended the ladies afternoon Cynthia Neptune and I were transported (in Rolls Royce) around 6 of the 8 groups performing free shows for handicapped adults and children in the Eastbourne area on the Wednesday. We both performed a trick each and “officially” welcomed all performers and their relevant audiences at the different venues. We returned to The Congress Theatre for Cynthia to introduce Gay Blackstone who was presenting the Jeffery Atkins Memorial Lecture to the 1800 registrants. The same evening was the welcome to the overseas visitors. Mary and I had the pleasure to formally meet all of the overseas registrants in the impressive flag bearing ceremony, together with Cynthia and her escort Betty Laing, The Mayor of Eastbourne, Counsellor Barbara Goodall and her son Charles. Dancing and a strong cabaret show followed. I was able to attend the IBM Ring 25 Annual General Meeting the following morning and to speak about International affairs and some of my projects and goals for the next year. I also decided to join Ring 25 and have now formally applied for membership but have to wait two months while they decide if I will be a member of good standing! An excellent lecture by John Styles on “My Magic Life” followed the AGM and this, in turn, was followed by a lecture by John Gordon on Strolling Magic. The rest of the afternoon was spent judging the British Ring Shield competition with 13 competitors competing for the most entertaining magic act, originality, manipulation, comedy and best lady performer. I was impressed with the high standard of all the acts and the organization of this competition as I have been at the other five British Ring Conventions I have attended in the past. The Convention banquet took place that evening and I had the pleasure of proposing the toast to the British Ring using a little bit of magic in my presentation. The late, late Gala followed the banquet and once again was well produced with 5 top variety acts entertaining a full house. Saturday morning was the International Close-up Gala show organized by Mike Gancia with headline performers from the USA, Slovenia, Germany and the USA. This clashed with the Children’s Showtime show but could not be averted. There was also a presentation arranged by Eddie Dawes that morning entitled “More History of Mystery.” Saturday afternoon was the close up competition with 15 competitors which I had been also asked to judge. My judging commitments precluded me attending a lecture by Pat Fallon from Ireland on “Children’s Magic in the Real World” which I heard was very good. So was the close-up competition! International magic was the title of the Saturday night show at the Congress Theatre compered by Rich Block. Acts from Slovenia, France, Japan, Taiwan, USA and the UK were featured. We attended a Convention Service on the Sunday morning before Eugene Burger’s lecture entitled “60 minutes with Eugene Burger”. I was also able to sit in on a Junior Workshop and the Young Magicians’ Club which was led by Max Maven and organized by Mandy Davis. An auction was also taking place at this time. Max Maven presented his 90 minute lecture that afternoon to the 1800 registrants which was well received. Later that afternoon Cynthia Neptune presided over the Presentation of Awards and the installation of the new 2004/2005 President, Don Beattie from Newcastle. The final Convention event was a popular fixture presented by Eddie Dawes called the Bell Ringers with four featured acts presenting mainly items relating back to the late Peter Warlock. Thank you Eddie for the reference to the late Edgar Benyon who was a New Zealander who toured the UK and Ireland many years ago. Van Buren and Co who closed the show featured juggling and plate spinning which Edgar also featured together with magic, ventriloquism, stick juggling and troublewit. Thank you British Ring 25 for having us as your guests and for the opportunity to meet magicians from all over the world. The next morning we left Eastbourne for London (traveling with Alan Sullivan from Sydney, Australia) heading together for The Magic Circle meeting that night. ----------------- 5. Hurtubis (US) Four Attendees Merge Their Reviews Of Magic In The Rockies 2004 Every magic convention has a “vibe.” We four attendees are all home now from Magic in the Rockies this past weekend and we are all basking in the afterglow. For some reason the “vibe” at this convention in Fort Collins, Colorado is always a good and strong one. The “vibe” of the MITR is affected by several things: the headliners, the attendees (limited to just around 250), the incredibly efficient organization of everything, the three meals that are deliciously provided and also by the venue which once again was the Fort Collins Marriott who welcome us back each year with open arms. The phenomenal events started on Thursday night, September 9 with instant and smooth registration, accomplished by Tim Pendergast with assistance from the entire membership of IBM Ring 250/The Presto-Digitators (and convention coordinators Ed Hurtubis and Lew Wymisner). The Fort Collins Marriott staff provides warm and welcoming arrangements for every convention attendee, including a huge room to securely house the 18 dealers. Throughout the convention, at convenient times, every attendee has a chance to visit with each of these knowledgeable vendors who display every kind of magic. The speed of this convention is beyond that of light beams, as the incidental meeting with every other one of the 260 attendees becomes a regular happening throughout the convention. Friday arrived early with further registration and travel to the Junior Showcase show at the Fort Collins Lincoln Center. This show, also called “Kids Performing for Kids” is sponsored by area businesses, and performed before nearly 1000 elementary school students. The Superintendent of Schools introduced the show, challenging the audience of students to test their problem solving skills. She then introduced Steve Spangler, the amazing science guru and sensational MC who provided audience involvement, exciting experiences, and laughter. Performers included Cody James, Taylor, and Cody Landstrom with music, magic, and juggling; John T. Sheets and Corrine with a jumbo Three Card Monte; Eric Andrews with a balloon sword cabinet, five year old Jack Spangler who created a dove pan chicken “Cord-on-Blue” that delighted the audience and highlighted the show. Mark Strivings played with kids and cards-across along with the Pom-Pom Pole and wonderful by-play. Sean McKoskey followed skillfully with a giant card slicing through his lovely assistant just prior to John T. Sheets returning to the stage leaving us speechless with his original illusion of creatively dissecting Corrine into quarters. Steve’s science demonstration of air, thunder, and windblasts knocking Styrofoam cups off the heads of audience participants, and then blowing huge smoke rings to the highest areas of the theatre. The final performer was David Oliver who presented doves, rings, silks, and zombie, a classic/excellent/astounding magic presentation that capped the show. It was a phenomenal experience, after which lunch was served conveniently on the Terrace to the nearly 180 early convention attendees. Sensational! Back to the hotel where Banachek lectured on mentalism with brilliant ideas, twists, and creations. Dealers became available, and then the dinner buffet was served. The Cabaret Show after dinner was MC’d by Eddie Goldstein who did his customary best. The Cabaret headliners included Banachek, Stephen Bargatze, Rafael Benatar, Tom Burgoon, John Carney, Bob Sheets, and Peter Samelson. More Dealer Room time was followed by a late night lecture by Tom Burgoon. Magic in the Rockies always has an after-glow event. They call it “Bar Magic” on Friday night. The incredibly helpful hotel staff and the tech crew of MITR worked hard to create a “magic bar.” Through the facile use of lights and microphones, enthusiastic attendees were treated to a fast paced show by Doc Eason, Bob Sheets, and Steven Bargatze. The show was a smash! Rafael Benatar led off the Saturday lecturers with wonderful card work that extends through cultural and language barriers with ease and grace. Stephen Bargatze lectured next and was beyond description for his hilarity. Following lunch, Peter Samelson taught the audience how to learn even more. Barrie Richardson’s lecture was filled with astute thinking and motivation. His professorial background really shows One of the many highlights of the weekend is the Saturday night Public Show, held back at the beautiful Lincoln Center Performance Hall, four miles from the Marriott, which meant car-pooling and further audience bonding. The headliner show, skillfully MC¹d by Stephen Bargatze, was beyond description. Stephen is funny, runs around the entire audience, falls off the stage, and delivers put-downs and thumbs-up throughout the evening. He even involved Bob Sheets in some weird by-play where Bob became Steven. David Oliver opened the show and immediately let people realize what quality magic is all about. His presentation of the Linking Rings and Zombie approaches real magic. Tom Burgoon made you laugh and smile. Banachek added several stunning mental effects including a telephone number prediction. Rafael Benatar charmed the socks off the audience with his international flair, John Carney did his outrageous Mr. Mysto, and Peter Samelson closed the show with Snowstorm--masterfully performed. None of us was aware of the shows length--just that it was sensational and all too brief. After the Public Show, the audience is invited to hot foot it from downtown back to the Marriott for what has become the traditional late night Soirée. Mike T, Marty McDowell, and John T. Sheets provided the pre show. This years Soiree was the funniest, most fantastic, most hilarious of all eleven years. Doc Eason and Eric Mead kicked it off with the funniest version of Sam, the Bellhop, on the planet. John Carney presented a seldom seen trick.cards up the sleeve--seldom seen because not many people have the skill to do something so technical. Tom Burgoon presented one of the funniest routines ever seen at a magic convention. Stephen Bargatze, assisted by Doc Eason, created a straightjacket escape that would sell videos throughout the world as the ultimate in “funny.” Peter Studebaker provided an edge to the evening, only surpassed by Bob Sheets, who, much to the chagrin of his friends, presented an even edgier trick with a “not too cooperative spectator.” Sunday morning has become the time when Dr. Bob Sammons presents a Junior Lecture, as he becomes a master teacher for young people. We all stood in amazement as he created the learning atmosphere of astonishment. Bob is our young magicians instructor forever. Concurrently, Yigal Mesika lectured in another venue about invisible thread techniques beyond imagination—superb! MITR produces a Headliner Close-Up Show in three different rooms, each room MC’d by the president of a front-range magic club: Mile High’s Chad Darnell, Colorado Springs’ Mark Weidhaas, and the Psi Clones’ Lee Marelli. Performers were: Tom Burgoon, (weird and wonderful stuff); Rafael Benatar (card miracles and Cups and Balls); Stephen Bargatze (with a sink-plunger mental routine that leveled us all); and Peter Samelson with astounding close-up illusions. John Carney closed the convention, lecturing, as always, with great skill covering misdirection, timing, audience viewpoint.great stuff! There is no way to include everything that happened, which is okay, because IBM Ring 250 hopes that every reader will be in attendance next year, along with another huge cast of phenomenal presenters. Miracles will be performed. An intimate group of 250-plus will assemble at Magic in the Rockies, 2005 and four attendees will be out of breath in trying to describe it all for you. Take the card and place it face up on the table. Take your ring off (or you can have the spectator choose one of theirs as long as it is a gold ring) and place it on top of the chosen card. Take the ring and rub it vigorously on the card. You tell the spectator that you used to work at a factory that turned everything gold colored. I am going to do this with your chosen card but by using magic. After you tell them your story you turn the card over and it has now turned gold on the back. Note: You can also take this one step further by taking the chosen card and placing on top of the deck. Next you would do a double lift to show the spectator that the back of the card matches the rest of the deck. Then you would take the top card and then place it face up on the table. Method: To force the gold card on your spectator you do the Hindu shuffle. This is where you would have the spectator tell you to stop as you are going through the deck of cards taking a little bit off the top of the deck each time and placing it in your hand. When the spectator says stop you show them the bottom card. This will be the chosen card. It will never move in its place. You can also do whatever move you like to do best to force the card. Note: You have to be extra careful with your gold card. If you are to rough with it then the gold will start to peel off. If you lightly rub around your card after every effect then your card should last you a long time. *There are many uses for the gold colored card. Here is just one effect but you can make up many of your own .Also it feels so good going to my magic club doing a trick that no one else has or even had seen. Guy Bavli has e mailed me about my foil system he says he loves it he put some silver foil on a spoon and did it to some one, he told me that he loved the reaction that people make when he does it. ----------------- 14. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 21 The Sixties! What a decade! Ten years of discovery, experience, and fun. My first Theatrical Agent was  Mary Throll, a lovely Scotswoman, who was a singer in her own right. She owned Fuller’s Entertainment Agency, which was the main Agency for artistes in Auckland. I haven’t seen or spoken to Mary for years and years and…I found her phone number and gave her a surprise call the other day. After the ‘You’ll never guess who this is…’ game, we had a wonderful chat about the ‘Good Old Days’. She was so thrilled  “…you’ve made my day…”, she said. Mary said that she had been booking me for shows from late 1959, until she sold out to George Tollerton in March 1960; so, my magic abilities were far more advanced at that time, than I remember. Exactly 5 years later, in March 1965, Mary began the ‘Throll Entertainment Agency’, operating from the Strand Arcade, Auckland. Amazing how you forget things/! Mary recalls my father bringing me into her office (at her request - somebody had told her about me), and that “…you were very young”. Well yes - I was 15, going on 16 (turned 16 on 13th (lucky for some) September 1960). That probably explains why I vaguely remember ‘Piddling’ Fees of three guineas (Three pounds and three shillings for those wondering what the hell a ‘guinea’ was) for shows. Veronica says that she was getting only £4.00 week for her first office job, working 40 hours per week, so what THE HELL was I complaining about! Mary Throll explained that she is at present writing her autobiography, due out later this year, she hopes, which is why she had the ‘facts about me on hand’. “Oh, Tommy,” she said “you were a little terror – and such a ladies’ man in those days!” Who – ME? Naaaahhhhh! When George Tollerton, the famous New Zealand ventriloquist (see Page 15) took over the ‘Fullers Entertainment Agency’ flag in March 1960, he became the ‘Main Player’ for artists in Auckland - probably the whole of N.Z.! Apart from the usual ‘gigs’ around town, the first major show he booked me for was the 1960-61 Christmas/New Year concerts, at the Mount Maunganui Sound Shell, with the HOWARD MORRISON QUARTET (New Zealand’s most famous group). In fact – he booked just about ALL of the artistes into the Christmas/ Holiday shows held in various resorts around the country. You would move from one venue to another like a ‘merry-go-round’, as one show or artist moved out, another moved in – this went on for 2 – 3 weeks, over the entire holiday period. You sure learned how to handle and entertain huge audiences, (from 5000 up to 30,000, or more) in these out-door (usually at night) concerts. ‘Gee, they were good days’, as my dear long time buddy, Sally Metzger (nee Philips), put it recently. The largest live audience I personally performed for (excluding television - that’s in the millions) a few years later, working my Hypnotism show, was in excess of 100,000 people at the Western Springs Stadium in the late 60s. The show was, ‘The New Zealand - BATTLE OF THE BANDS’, run by the late BENNY LEVIN, (another well known and respected Agent in Auckland – dealt mainly with bands and singers). Now, that was just a little overwhelming – standing alone that huge stage, with only a microphone, and 100 chairs to behind me, looking out at a never-ending sea of faces and bodies’. That’s when all those years of experience ‘playing’ outdoor Christmas concerts, came to the fore. When I joined ‘The New Zealand Society of Magicians’ in Auckland Tony Wilson (well known Auckland magician,) was the Editor of the Club Newsletter – many of which I’ve managed to keep all these years. I noted the other day (after blowing a mountain of dust off them), that in the June edition #14, 1961, Tony reported that I had ‘…swallowed a sword…’ at the club, so I must have perfected that particular art late 1960/early 1961. Tony also reported, in the January 1962 newsletter - #17, that I had performed my Fire Eating act at the club in December 1961, so I must also have had that ‘sorted’ as well sometime in 1960. What a busy year of - practising, honing, and perfecting - that was! All that ‘yucky’, two-stroke lawnmower fuel I had surreptitiously used to practise with, had finally paid off! ------------------ 15.
