We know that his mother left their midst extremely proud of Dale and his family's accomplishments. Please know, Dale, that we're all thinking of you and your great fortune in having such a wonderful lady. ----------------- 4. Secrets Of Alan Watson - Dan Garrett ----------------- Message from Dan Garrett, MIMC S.A.M. National President, 1994-1995 current IBM Territorial Vice-President, Georgia, USA Guy Cater told some interesting things about Alan Watson in the last Magic New Zealand digest that many did not know. But I knew! (:}D) It's been well over a decade since my lecture tour in New Zealand, but at the time my wife Carol and I had the pleasure of staying in Alan's home as a house guest, and there I actually saw Alan give a birthday party show (a real one) out 'in the trenches,' as it were. I also participated with Alan and other of my fine Kiwi magical peers at a public mall show. There is nothing like seeing what a magician does in the real world before 'real people!' I love it! Alan Watson is what Stan Allen (publisher and former editor of MAGIC magazine and JUGGLE magazine) call as 'G P,' or 'General Practitioner' of magic. Which means he performs professionally for all groups, big and small, young and old, close-up and stage. (I think Stan said this of me, too.) So, a tip of the hat to our NZ host Alan, Michele and family. Happy Valentine's Day (Feb. 14) to all, and especially to the older and wiser septegenerian Alf Hayes! (:}D) PS: When my Spring lecture tour gets finalized, I'll post it here. Tom Craven is my booking agent this year. ----------------- 5. FMA Convention Location Changed ----------------- Message from Maria Ibanez President Florida Magicians Association Greetings everyone: Great news! Although the hotel that was to host the 2005 Florida Magicians Convention was damaged by the hurricanes of 2004 and will not be open in time for the convention. Rick del Vecchio, state Convention Committee Chair has secured a new venue and we are most excited about it. The 2005 convention will be hosted by I.B.M. Ring 45 - the Syd Bergson ring and will be brought to you at the fabulous Micosukee Casino Resort -- yes, the same place that the convention was held two years ago. The contracts are being signed with the center this afternoon and before the end of the week we will be sending out an e-mail releasing the names of those who have been hired to perform this year. If you haven't already done so, send in your registration for the convention today -- Rick has lined up some FISM winners and some fabulous acts. They are just coming off their 10th annual Magic on The Beach convention and if that is any indication, this one will be phenomenal! In Response To The Email Regarding My "Borderline" Exposure ----------------- Message from Patrick Drake (Canada) I recently received an email regarding the posting I gave you last time about the article I will be writing for Urban Male Magazine. The email basically told me that I was bordering on exposure by giving a few "guys" a few things to use in a social situation, bar tricks and stunts I guess..they won't be doing a double list or a back palm any time soon. Anyway, here is the response I wrote..maybe your readers would be interested. Thanks, Patrick Drake -------------------- In response to the email regarding my "borderline" exposure To whom it may concern. I assure you that I, more than anyone, would NEVER undermine my integrity as a magician, or jeopardise any other performer’s career by "exposing" the secrets behind their act. The UMM article is going to be more about bar stunts, bets and wagers than about actual magic tricks. Just little bits of business for the average Joe to have a little fun with in a social situation. What non-magician would not want to learn a few of those? And secondly, the magazine only comes out 4 times a year. What I can't understand about this person's concern is that in the same bookstore selling this one magazine, is a whole rack of magic books..free for the public to take..Expert Card Technique, Bobo's Coin magic, The Expert at the Card Table, Mark Wilson's HUGE book, are all available at Chapters right off the shelf in paperback!!! And you know what? The rack does not have a sign on it saying "MAGICIANS ONLY". And these are not beginner books, these are working professional manuals. Not to mention, if you type "magic tricks" into GOOGLE, you will get 10,000 sites..all giving free access to just about any trick you can imagine. There are free sites about sleight-of-hand with cards and coins, how to build illusions, and tons of links to magic stores alongside of every trick taught. I go into my school the other day and there is a kid, who has taken an interest in magic, doing Card on the Ceiling in the foyer of the school, terribly I might add. I immediately asked him where he found that trick..he said he downloaded the Ammar video from the Kazaa file sharing service on the Internet. I went home to check it out..to my total amazement, Kazaa had no fewer that 56 magic videos ready to download at the click of a mouse..totally free for the taking. Lets wake up here people..magic is no longer as secretive as we wish it would be and anyone who doesn't realize this should take their heads out of the sand. L&L publishing has the world's top performers giving away every trick imaginable on a publicly accessible website. Is this site password protected only for magicians? Do you think the people at L&L only want to sell to the magic community? They are in business to make money, layperson or magician, it does not matter to them. Are they guilty of exposure? What about your typical magic store? Is there a sign on the door saying "MAGICIANS ONLY? If that were the case, most would quickly go out of business. And when you walk in the door of said magic dealer, is all of the "good stuff" sealed in a "back room" for "magicians only"? I am guessing that the person who has expressed concern about me "exposing magic" in a magazine is not a working pro, for if he/she was, he/she would realize that "exposure" only hurts performers who think magic is all about the tricks and the secrets. If that were the case, magic never would have stood as the world's oldest performing art. I attend Fechters Finger Flicking Frolic each year, a gathering of the world's top working pros. This gathering is unlike the average magic convention where, as Darwin Ortiz states in his fantastic book STRONG MAGIC, "is made up of 95 % amateurs or hobbyists". These are the guys who are out there everyday doing magic and getting paid to do it. And guess what? Exposure is NEVER a topic of conversation among these guys. Why is this the case? Because a working pro knows that magic is about more than just the secret behind the trick. That, if anything, should drive home the message I am trying to send here, it only is a concern if you make it a concern. In my opinion, magic is about the performer, his personality and how he engages the audience. If you come across as warm and inviting in your performances, believe me, 15 years as a working pro have showed me that most people really don't care about the secrets as long as they have had a good time. Just one more note..one of my favorite card tricks to perform for laypeople, in close-up, is a trick that was exposed on TV during the close-up exposure show a few years back. It's a monte effect and it has a very powerful climax. After performing the trick, not once has anyone said.."hey Mr Magic Man, that's that trick I saw exposed on TV a few years ago.." My suggestion to anyone who thinks exposure has hurt magic is this..instead of wasting all of your time thinking about something you cannot do anything about, go out and do some magic for someone right now..the cashier at the grocery store, the pizza guy at your door, waiting for your flight at the airport..or anywhere for that matter. Jeff McBride told me at the CAM convention that if you claim to be a magician, be one all of the time..put a smile on someone's face, teach them a simple trick, after all, if it wasn't for "exposure", how would we all know how to do our tricks? I welcome your thoughts. Magic Mountaineers January 15, 2005 ----------------- Message from Chuck Henderson As a result of Chuck's lovely wife Ampaporn visiting relatives in Bangkok and Chaam, Thailand, the Wow group of magic-tainers known as the Magic Mountaineers appeared at The Boca Restaurant January 15, 2005 and performed in a private room that was set up via instructions from Glenn Vodhanel. The delicious spaghetti meal including garlic toast, spinach, and green beans all arranged and paid for by 'Generous' Glenn. Glenn also provided a multicolored metal button to each member with their name and the "Magic Mountaineers" inscribed. The restaurant was outstanding with many wall photos of movie greats, past and present. Everyone was glad to see Lou Lancaster make an appearance along with Harry Shaffer, Dr. Harvey Rosen, Pat (Wagner) du Vannes, Glenn Vodhanel and Albert Raskind. Lou Lancaster presented each member with a terrific gift: "Houdini's Beads," a fabulous pocket effect that will stun all onlookers when they observe three 1 ½ inch wooden beads magically penetrate two cords that are threaded through the beads. 'Generous' Glenn Vodhanel placed a large sheet of paper on the table and proceeded to toss two invisible dice on the table and asked TWTW (the waiter to watch). He threw the invisible dice on the table a second time and the waiter was asked to remember (imagine) the number on one of the invisible dice. Glenn then dealt four cards face up on the table and placed them next to the sheet of paper. He asked the waiter the number on the invisible dice. The reply was "two." Glenn pointed to the four cards on the table and turned over the second card and we saw it had a red back. He then turned over the other three cards and each of them had a blue back. Only the card at the number selected by the waiter (two) had a red back. Glenn showed us what was written on the reverse side of the large piece of paper that was on the table. "You will select the Red Card." The dazzled waiter staggered off with a 'what happened?' look on his face. A darn nice effect by a darn nice guy. Dr. Harvey Rosen performed a face up table spread with a deck of cards and had a volunteer (V) shuffle and cut the cards. " You have the choice of two suits -- either hearts and spades or diamonds and clubs. " The 'V' chose Diamonds and Clubs. Dr. H dealt all the cards face up and we watched as he removed all the diamonds and clubs and handed them to the 'V' while Dr. H retained the balance of the cards. The 'V' dealt his cards face up all over the table as Dr. Rosen dealt his cards face down and on top of the volunteer's cards. The effect was climaxed when the face down cards were turned face up and the denomination was exactly the same as the card underneath. Not bad for a root canal specialist. Alberto Raskind asked a 'V' to shuffle a deck of cards followed by counting 26 cards onto the table. “Select either half of the deck and then count 13 cards onto the table." Albert picked up the 13 cards and handed one to each person in the audience and asked them to remember their cards as they returned them to the deck which Albert shuffled. He then picked up a card from the deck and held it facing the volunteer who announced it was the same card he was earlier asked to remember. This was repeated with the remaining 'V's' who confirmed the cards shown to them were the same as the cards selected. Dr. Harvey Rosen placed four coins on the table side by side --  three silver dollars and an English copper penny that was the same size as the silver dollars. We were informed the English pennies were pure copper while the USA copper pennies were only copper clad. He placed the three silver dollars in his left hand and the copper penny in his right hand and closed both hands. Upon opening his hands he tossed the coins on the table and we discovered the copper penny in his right hand somehow managed to trade places with a silver dollar in his left hand. This was repeated several times and the coins held in his left hand continued to mysteriously switch places with the coin/coins in his right hand. Later the copper penny completely disappeared. A nice coin effect. Lou Lancaster showed us an empty round metal bucket about 10 inches high and six inch diameter. He somehow managed to produce a silver dollar from out of midair and drop it inside the bucket. We heard a loud rattle when it hit the bottom of the bucket. He produced another coin from his nose and dropped it inside the bucket and we heard the same resounding rattle as it hit the bottom. Coins were produced from volunteer's noses and other places and each time the coin was dropped inside the bucket. We could hear the coins fall inside the bucket but where was he getting the additional coins? They were produced out of nowhere. At the end of the coin productions Lou emptied the bucket and all the silver dollars fell onto the table. Is it possible he learned this effect from some dreamy money miser? Many thanks to Lou from the attendees for giving each of us the complete apparatus and instructions for, "Houdini's Beads" - a novel effect where the magician displays three one inch beads, threaded on two cords. A knot is tied, securely trapping the beads on the cords. The beads magically escape from the cords. Everything can be thoroughly examined. This effect can be carried in your pocket while sitting at your favorite bar. The boozers and non-boozers will be overwhelmed when they are, "Houdini Bead-ed." Generous Glenn Vodhanel stepped to the front for a second time and asked a 'V' to select any two digit number. The number announced by the 'V' was '77.' Glenn gave himself only five seconds to come up with a superb effect. A 'V' was asked to look at his watch and count out loud the seconds until he arrived at five. At the same time Glenn rapidly wrote some numbers on the back of a blank business card in his small business card holder. When the five seconds had expired he showed us the 16 numbers he had used to fill in the squares and exterior of a tick tack toe type of drawing except the design had three horizontal rows from left to right and three vertical rows. We were asked to add the four numbers in any vertical, horizontal or diagonal direction. We did as instructed and the sum was always '77' regardless of the row that was added. How did he do that in only five seconds? It should have taken at least an hour to calculate how to make all the rows of numbers to add up to '77.' Glenn we know you are a computer whiz with a successful computer programming business but we have only one question - where did you hide the laptop during your performance? Harry 'CPA to the Stars' Shaffer placed a black marker pen, pair of scissors and 8 X 10 pad of paper on the table. He showed us a sheet of paper that was full of the many logos of different companies from Intel to Volkswagen. The sheet was handed to a volunteer who was told to fold the sheet in half and then half again and continue until it was folded in sixteenths. The paper was handed to Harry who picked up the scissors and cut, in a circular pattern, about 1/8th inch off the entire outside of the folded paper resulting in 16 individual pieces of paper and each containing a different logo. He placed the face up logos on the table and the face down logos next to them. Harry turned his back and asked the 'V' to select any one of the logos and hold it inside his closed hand. Harry then turned around, picked up the 8 X 10 pad of paper and asked the 'V' to concentrate on a picture of the logo he was holding. Harry picked up the black marker and drew a picture of two circles -- one circle was inside the outer circle and about ½ the diameter. Harry asked the 'V' to show everyone the logo he was holding. The 'V' was holding the logo of Fruit Loops that exactly matched the drawing. Harry ESP'D us again. After the magic performances several stories about Howard Hughes were shared that did not appear in the movie "Aviator." Pat (Wagner) du Vannes knew Howard Hughes' ex-wife Terry Moore quite well. Pat said Ms. Moore was very tiny and friendly. The next M&M meeting will be held at the Henderson's Habitat February 19 at 1:00. The card then becomes hot to touch as a flame comes out from behind the card. Props: A playing card with the following items attached to it. Flash paper, small piece of wire to hold the flash paper down in this effect I use wire from a garbage tie (twist tie), a wooden match and the striker part of a pack of matches or from the match box. Set-Up: Make sure that you have your match in place so that it is easy to remove when needed. Every time you do this trick you will need a new match so it is best that you make a little pocket on the back of the card to put the match in place. You will have this card with the gimmick on it at the bottom of your deck. Put about half of the deck of cards on the top of the gimmicked card. The match is small enough that it barely looks as if there is anything there. Now you’re ready to begin. Note: The wire (twist tie) is near the top of the playing card on the back this wire is to hold the flash paper in place. The striker (from the match box) is just under the wire. For the wire I just use normal clear tape to hold it in place. I also use double sided tape as well as clear tape to hold the striker in place as well. I have a little piece of card rolled in to a very small tube taped on the back of the card as well this is to hold the wooden match in place on top of the striker when it is time to light the flash paper. Patter: (You have to force the gimmicked card on your spectator. I do this by doing the Hindu shuffle. You can use what ever force suits your needs. Either way you have to force the gimmick.) Next you are going to tell your spectator that they picked the only hot card in the entire deck. You can fan out the rest of the deck showing that all of the cards are different and there is nothing odd about them at all. You pick up your gimmicked card and tell your spectator that this is really a hot card. Next you are going to strike your match and then you will have your flash showing your spectator why it is really a hot card. Lighting Your Match: To make your match light on the card all you have to do is push the match over to one side and push down as you bring it back up to the middle of the card. This will create enough spark to light the match and for the flash paper to go off. Once again this card is designed with the flash paper on top with your wire piece holding it in place. Under that you will have your striker piece to be able to light the match. Than you will have your match standing straight up. Your match is loose enough so you can pull it over to one side just enough so that when you push on the match and move it over it will ignite both the match and the flash paper. History Of The Effect: I came up with this idea of effect about two years ago it took a while to work out the bugs but this is the best way I found to do this type of effect. Every thing fits very well to the card after about 6-10 uses you might have to change the card depending on how much flash paper you use. ----------------- 20. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 40 The Memories Resume Recap. I’ve met Peter Taylor, Auckland Juggler/Acrobat. We’re heading back to Auckland after a ‘gig’ - it’s New Year’s Eve 1964/65, five minutes to midnight, and I’m knocking on the door. Door opens, and there looms the large, solid form of a Kiwi farmer. “Yeah - whatcha you want?” I explained that we, Peter and I, were professional entertainers; he, a juggler and me, a magician, and that we had just done a show at the Thames Memorial Hall. NO, our car hadn’t broken down but, could we bring in the New Year with them? In return, we would royally entertain them! How could he refuse? After all - according to me, we were the two ‘Biggest Talents’ in New Zealand. Well, I believed it myself, and had long given up blushing years ago! “Come on in’, he roared. “Hey”, he yells to his wife and kids, “We’ve got a couple of blokes here who’re going to put a ‘show’ on for us!” “It’s alright for you with your magic tricks and stuff”; Peter growls in my ear, “What the Hell am I going to do?” “Improvise”, I said. After the usual midnight drinks and the shaking of hands, Peter and I, for around an hour, put on ‘The Show’ for our audience of five - Mum, Dad, and three kids. Peter juggled anything ‘juggle-able’, fruit, eggs, etc. He balanced chairs, a table, a broom, and performed some gymnastic feats, using the chairs to balance on. In between his bits, I performed Close-up magic, with sponge balls, thimbles, coins, etc., during which Peter ambled out to the car, and got three swords - two were his, one was mine - actually Peter had one sword, the other was a dagger. The sword was about 3 feet long, very heavy, and the point was needle sharp. He gripped the dagger in his teeth, and placed the sword, point to point on the dagger. With the sword perfectly balanced and from a standing position, he gradually lowered himself to the floor until he was flat on his back. He then gently pushed the blade so that the sword slowly revolved on the tip of the dagger. The slightest slip or misjudgement, and the heavy sword would have plunged straight down and penetrated his throat. It really was a most dangerous and breath-holding feat. And what did I do with mine? Why, I swallowed it, of course! I’ll bet, that that farmer, his wife, and their now adult kids, recount the tale every New Year’s Eve to their children and grandchildren and friends, about that wonderful night when two strangers, on the last minutes of 1964, appeared at their door, and… then vanished into the stillness of the night. Over the years, the telling of the yarn has probably turned into some sort of folklore type legend. Peter and I became great friends - we would meet up in Auckland City on Friday nights (if we weren’t working), and stand on the corner of Queen Street and Vulcan Lane (there was also a small Pub a few yards away, which helped keep our whistles wet), watching the passing parade of long legs, and mini-skirts, go by. We figured that if we waited long enough, the tops would get lower, the minis, shorter, and eventually they would meet in the middle. Never happened, which was a shame, as for the sake of modesty, I’d invented a bikini which came straight from my wild, youthful imagination; it was going to make me a fortune. I called it the ‘Brewery Bikini’ - two bottle-tops and a cork - the deluxe model had convenient tassels, tastefully attached, to ease removal/extraction! I didn’t get rich! The ‘Orchanté Saga’ is about my life, as a globetrotting New Zealand magician/entertainer; originally to inform other New Zealand magicians what I have been up to over the last 30 years odd years and, as Alan Watson succinctly put it, to make aware to the younger magicians of my contribution to New Zealand magic, and my proud ‘Flag-Waving’. It is also turning, at times, into a brief history of New Zealand ‘Show Biz’ folk, and others, who were, many still are, a part of my life. ------------------ 21.
