Royal Mail Marks The Centenary Of The Magic Circle ----------------- Message from Peter Graham (UK) Royal Mail will mark the centenary of The Magic Circle on 15 March with the release of a new set of stamps. The Magic Circle was founded by John Nevil Maskelyne. Born in Wiltshire in 1839, Maskelyne became a watchmaker, an occupation that triggered an interest in automata which he was to use in his act. In 1865, with his partner Mr Cooke, he appeared at the Crystal Palace. In 1873 they took a three month lease on the Egyptian Hall—staying for 31 years. He moved to the St George’s Hall in 1905, the year the Magic Circle was formed. He died in 1917. Each stamp features a magic trick which can be performed by following the instructions printed on it. The 1st class value depicts a spinning coin which when rubbed with a coin will reveal whether it shows heads or tails. There are two versions of this design (one for heads, one for tails) which are printed in alternative rows of the sheet, indicated by a small letter T or H in the left sheet margin. The other values feature rabbit out of hat trick (40p), knotted scarf trick (47p), card trick (68p) and pyramid under fez trick (£1.12). The stamps have been designed by Tatham Design using illustrations by George Hardie and printed in gravure by Walsall. Thermochromic ink has been used in printing the 47p and £1.12 values. Sheets of 25 will be sold at Post Offices, sheets of 50 with gutter will be available from Post Office philatelic outlets and Tallents House. As well as the usual first day cover envelope (25p), stamp cards (30p each) and presentation pack (£3.45) this issue will also include a Smilers sheet (£6.15). This will contain 20 1st class stamps, with the adjoining labels depicting four different magic tricks. The sheet is printed in litho by Walsall. Pictorial first day cancellations will be in use at Tallents House (magic wand) and London NW1 (six spotted die). ----------------- 3. Also we will be hosting an interesting event: Flashback to 1983. Three of magic’s most popular young close-up magicians (Michael Ammar, Daryl, and Paul Harris) flew to the Bahamas to have some fun in the sun and to brainstorm and develop new magic routines. The results of their trip was published as The Magic Hedonists Brainstorm in the Bahamas. Now, twenty three years later, these same three men, no longer young but still among the most popular close-up magicians of our time, will reunite at the 2005 LVMI. Paul Harris is the special guest of honor, Ammar will lecture and Daryl will perform in one of the shows. These three legendary performers will all take part in a special ninety minute Q&A Session and will field questions about their lives, their times and their art. Joining them at the 5th Las Vegas Magic Invitational close-up convention will be lecturers: Eric DeCamps, Michael Ammar, Allan Ackerman, Earl Nelson, Gaeton Bloom, John Bannon, Chris Randall, David Solomon (and a special late nigh show with Gazzo). European Magical Close-Up Champion 2005 ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) A very good, close friend of mine, and Veronica's, is a magician - Marc Oberon. We first met at a club outside of London around 1986; we had both been booked to perform there. Anyway, he spent a lot of time at our place because he wanted me to teach him Close-Up Magic. There is quite a long story here, but the bottom line is, last Friday he became the 'European Magical Close-Up Champion 2005'! Like you Alan, he calls me his 'mentor', although the stuff I taught him had little bearing on what he does now, the clever little bugger! He would come here to show/perform, and ask me my opinion on most of his routines, many of them unique - he is very inventive, so I feel rather chuffed that he has won this title. I'll write up the full story about how we met etc. for next week e-zine. ----------------- 9. Wayne Tellier Magic ----------------- Message from Jamie-G (Canada) Two weeks ago I had a interview with an up and coming close up magician. The best part is he is a local magician from my home town of Windsor, Ontario, Canada. His name is Wayne Tellier (Wayne Tellier magic) and he just came out with his own DVD which is not on the magic market. From talking to Mr Tellier all of the 8 effects are totally his own. Mr Tellier like me has come up with his own style of close up magic and shares this style of magic on the DVD The effects on this DVD are as follows: Intro 1. Here, Gone, There 2. Card Baby 3. Most Wanted 4. 4 More 5. Klip 6. W.T's Quick EZ 7. Crimped 3 Connection 8. Rubber Business 9. Recap & Sleights The total running time of this DVD is 58 minutes. Mr Tellier also adds that he strongly believes in these effects, and he hope that the new magicians will add them into there repertoire. This DVD also comes with one special gimmick to use in one of the effects. NAME OF DVD - What the #&%$? Magician: Wayne Tellier www.waynetelliermagic.com E-mail: wtellier@cogeco.ca Phone: (519)984-3689 In closing as I went though the DVD it was very enjoyable just to sit and learn a new effect. Mr Tellier has done a great job and I'm sure he will be hearing more about himself in the days to come. To find out more about this wonderful DVD contact Wayne Tellier, see above. If you are a magician just looking for something new or just doing something different at the next magic meeting you can't lose with this one....JAMIE-G (President-I.B.M.-ring-116) www.jamiegmagic.com jamiegsmagicnotebook@yahoo.ca ----------------- 10. WANTED - Japanese Handkerchief Box ----------------- Message from Andy Walker (NZ) I am trying to locate a good Japanese Handkerchief Box. Ideally I want to find the Mikame version which is no longer being made. This is sometimes called the Double Production Box. I am not interested in the extra large size version, just the regular smaller one. If you have one you no longer use & would consider selling or know where a second hand one is available please send me an email: andy@walkermagic.com ----------------- 11. Torn And Restored Playing Card - Jamie-G ----------------- Message from Jamie-G (Canada) Effect: The magician goes though a deck of cards and the spectators tells the magician to stop at the point the magician shows the spectator the card that he had him stop at. The magician at this point one end of the playing card and tears it right off. Then the magician turns the playing card around and tears that end off as well. Now the playing card that the spectator had the magician stop at is now in three piece's. At this point the magician takes the two end pieces and put them in the middle of the playing card and fold them all together so all three pieces all folded in to one small folded piece. Now at this point the magician shows the card folded in this packet and then blown on the folded playing card in a blink of an eye the playing card is totally restored. Props: To make this effect you will need two of the same playing cards, for example two three of hearts also make sure that you are using cards with the same backs as well. You will also need double sided tape (double stick tape) Note: I have learned in the past that it is best to use the double sided tape than any glue it is just a personal choice that I use the tape I have noticed than the glue will give away and break down from both of the card sooner or later so I keep it easy and just use the tape. Most dollar stores carry this tape and it should not be hard to find. Set-Up #-1 (card-A): The first card you need to fold in half so when you fold the card you are folding the cards face inside itself. Now the card is in half you should only half of the back side of the card. If it is done right from front and back of the two folded halves you can only see the back of the playing card. Now while the card is folded in half with both ends of the fold card pointed upward fold the card again but make sure you try and make the fold straight and even this makes a big difference in the making of this effect. It must be done like this as it is very important. Now that this card is in a folded package you will notice that in one corner of the folded playing card you will see that all four corners are in one corner of the card. (This is very important) You must make sure that this corner with the folded four corners is pointed upward and the four corners are pointed to the left. It is this side that the double sided tape will go. So the break down is like this make sure the corner with the four ends are pointed upward and is pointed in the left upper side. Cover this side with the double sided tape. So now you have a playing card folded in half twice with one side with double sided tape on it. Set-Up-#-2: Now take the normal playing card (match to the folded one) turn the normal playing card so the cards back is facing you. Place the folded card with the double sided tape smack right in the middle of the normal cards back. If this is done right this is what it would look like the normal back of the playing card with the folded card on the back. Now the folded card with the four corners should be still on the top but now the four corners are pointed towards the right. (This step must be done right for this effect to work) Once this is done open and close the folded card a few times to loosen up the folds a bit but when you are done make sure the card is closed back up and don't misfold the card or the effect will not work. You must keep these folds just like you have them now. Now we are ready to do this awesome effect. Note: The folded card will fit pretty flat on the back of the normal playing card after you work out the folds so don't worry about the force because we have already worked this out if the set up is done right you will not have to worry about the force trust me layman will not know what had hit them and your fellow magi at the next magic meeting will want to know where you got this effect and how you did it. Set-Up-#-3: Go out and get a new deck of cards. Take out all the Jokers and extra cards that comes with the deck this is important because when you do this you will now be able to fit the gimmicked card in to the pack of cards and put it in to the card case. Note: Make sure that you are using the same back playing cards as the back of your gimmick or the spectators will notice it is not the same card as the rest of them. You must use the same back playing cards no matter how close they look. (Very important) Deck Set-Up: With your gimmick ready to go take the gimmick and place it on the bottom of your new deck. So now the gimmick card is now at the bottom of the deck if done right you can show the whole deck in your hand front to back and it will look normal. At this point put the whole deck back in to the card case and you are now ready to rock the world with a real new cool piece of magic Jamie-G style. Note: In this effect you can only use the gimmicked card once, this is the only bad thing about this effect. So once you have used the gimmicked card you will have to make another one sorry but welcome to the world of magic. Method: #-1: Take the playing cards out of the box. If you have a card mat it would come in very useful for this effect. False shuffle the deck a few times keeping the gimmicked card on the bottom of the deck. For example half cut the deck then half cut again and drop the first cut in to the second one. This way it looks like you are shuffling the deck but in real time the gimmick is still on the bottom of the deck. Now at this point you can turn the deck over and if you have a close up mat you can spread out the cards face up and not to worry about the gimmicked card. When you bring the cards back together just remember to give a few more false shuffles to make the spectator that the cards are well mixed up. (Making sure that the gimmicked card is on the bottom of the deck.) Note: If you want you can also fan the whole deck of cards as well long as the gimmick is on the bottom. I'm having no problem fanning front or back of the deck. (You do not have to fan the deck either way for this effect I do because it is just what I do personally.) The Force: The force we are going to use is the Hindu shuffle. If you are in to magic you should know what the Hindu shuffle is it is the basic force in magic. What the Hindu shuffle looks like is that the magician is going through the deck of cards and giving the spectator a free choice of a card but in real time forcing the gimmicked card and all looking very honest while doing this. If you do not know the Hindu shuffle any magic book explains this or you can find out on some magic site on the internet. This is the best force for this effect hands down. Step#-2: After you have forced the gimmicked card only showing the front of the gimmicked card because the spectators would see the gimmicked card. Take the gimmicked card off the rest of the deck and set the rest of the deck down. The best way is just to hold the gimmicked card down towards the floor so only the face side of the normal card is showing. Now for the hard part - you are going to rip off both the ends of the playing card. Now by feeling the back of the gimmicked card you must feel for the folded card because you do not want to rip past the folded card on the back so you must be careful. At this point you rip the top side of the card right off try to come very close to the folded card on the back of it. Try to keep the rips straight. Once the one side is ripped off put that piece on the table turn the card around and do the same to the bottom of the card. While doing this keeping the normal gimmicked card in your hand the whole time. Now if you are doing this right you should have the top and bottom of the card on the table and the middle of the card in your hand. Step-#-3:Now take the two small ripped pieces and put them on top of the bigger middle card.(This is important because we are now going to lock these pieces together by folding the card a certain way.) What we have now is the two smaller ripped pieces on top and in the middle of the bigger piece. So if you were to look at the card it would look like the bigger middle piece on the bottom with the two smaller pieces in the middle of the bigger piece but the two smaller pieces are on top of each other. Very Important: Now if you look at the set up you will notice that while all the pieces are together all the straight edges are under each other. The two straight pieces are lined up with the middle piece it has to be like this in order for these ripped pieces to lock together. Step-#-4: Now we have to fold these pieces together with out showing the gimmick on the back. Fold the one side but you must feel the back to be the gimmicked folded card is. Fold the one side up to where the gimmicked folded card meets don't go past this or the spectator will see there is a folded card on the back do; the same to the other side. So now in real time all it looked like is that you folded up the three pieces. Now you need to fold the other two ends now. At this point you should still have two ends that are rough of the other end you need to also fold these ends as well and as the same as before you must feel the back of the card and making sure as you are folding the pieces not to fold too far and exposing the folded card on the back, do this to both sides.(This is what keeps the folded pieces from falling out) Now what you have is a folded and locked up ripped pieces with the gimmicked folded card on the bottom. The Move: This move that I'm about to explain will help you to make it look like the card had totally restored itself. But in real time all you are doing is opening the folded card on the bottom and it is so fast that it looks that somehow the card became whole it is quite shocking. First of all the ripped piece's are on top and the folded card is on the bottom. Now this next step is very important remember those four corners on the folded card on the back. You need to find where this corner is by feeling the bottom. Once you have done this turn the card so the four corners are pointing down but pointed towards the top left. While your right hand holds the whole gimmick from top to bottom, your first finger from your left hand slips in to the top of the first fold and your thumb of your left hand slips in to the top of the next opening. By holding this and by putting pressure you will make the folded card fly open very fast. It will take practice to get this move right but trust me it is all worth it in the end. Note: Make sure that you also hold the card a little at the end because a little piece of the folded card might show then at the end of the effect just take the card and put it in to your pocket. History Of This Effect: This effect is a reinvent for my card melt that I came up with a few years ago. I have shipped out over 1000 card melts to just I.B.M. members from around the world. The card melt itself can be done over and over again but I feel that this new way of doing the effect is much better. Note: Tom Craven from The Linking Ring had said about the card melt "THIS IS AWESOME MAGIC" and also on I.B.M. ring 2100 Tom had said "The card melt is like a weapon in Jamie-G's hands". I do believe that this effect is 100 times better because the spectator thinks it’s a normal card and also that they are getting a free choice as in the card melt you are coming out with three piece already ripped in this effect everything looks normal and by all means real magic. ----------------- 12. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 42 Treasured Memories of Friends Past and Present Peter Taylor worked with Newbs (Peter Newberry) for 2/3 years. He and Sally Phillips got engaged, and all was well. Then Peter decided to go solo once again, with his own act, ‘Delmere’, and left the Demonos/Movados. Peter Newberry took on a girl, (Gaye) who worked with him for about 3 months. Peter decided that Australia was the place to be – but Sally didn’t want to go. Peter practically begged me to go with him, but, as with Sally, I didn’t want to leave New Zealand. I loved travelling, but NZ was my birthplace, and very much my home. I can still recall, vividly, going with Peter to his bank where he withdrew a large bundle of cash, still pleading with me to go to ‘Aussie’ with him. He even offered to pay my airfare. I stayed - I must have been bloody mad! It wasn’t until Veronica and I immigrated to Australia in 1976 that I realised that I should’ve gone with Peter 10 years earlier. Sally broke off the engagement, and Peter left New Zealand’s shores, forever. Peter was right! Sydney, Australia, was in the early sixties, regarded by entertainers as being second only to Las Vegas. It was a Mecca for hundreds of artists, from acrobats to xylophonists, (and dozens of £10’Pommie’ comics), who could work their art(s), and make a very good living as full time professional entertainers. It was said you could ‘play’ a different club every night of the week (if you wanted to), for 10 years, without going to the same one twice. A slight exaggeration perhaps - but not far off it. Making small fortunes were the hundreds of ‘Mr 10%’ theatrical agents. Each one would handle a group of clubs, supplying all the entertainment with the acts on his books. Each agent would swap his acts with those of other agents, which meant that you always worked. If you were a good act, with a great agent (should that not be the other way round?) you, as an artist, were practically set for life. For those who don’t know what a ‘£10 ‘Pommie’ is – back in the ‘50s, Australia was encouraging professional and skilled people to emigrate to Australia, and were offering the British passage by ship, to Australia for only £10. ‘Pommie’ is slang ‘down under’ for an English person. There were so many different clubs, most lavishly decored, many with full-size gymnasiums, restaurants, full size swimming pools, auditoriums with full stage, sound, lighting, and dressing room facilities; all from the proceeds of hundreds of wall to wall, aisle after aisle, Poker machines, which also paid for the entertainment; bands, dancers, singers, sight-acts, and big international ‘names’. Some clubs even had special parking facilities - ‘for Artists only – oh, the luxury. The ‘Pokies’ were/are gold mines, they paid - or rather, the punters did, for everything. Back to New Zealand; one night Gaye, Peter Newberry’s new assistant, couldn’t work, so Sally stepped in to help Peter out. They did three shows that night. Ten years later, Sally was still working with Newbs. When Sally finally left the act, Marie, Peter Newberry’s daughter, took over. During all this time, the act was known as ‘Peter and Gaye’. For a brief time, Kim Hegan, the son of Elaine and the late Eddie Hegan, well known Auckland Theatrical agents at the time, also worked with Newbs. In Australia, Peter (Taylor) met and married Rosa. They worked together as ‘Delmere and Rosa’ for years , spending 6 months doing the Sydney clubs, and the other six, touring Europe - sending all their money back to Australia, building up a nice nest-egg for their future. When Veronica and I finally got to ‘Aussie’, we caught up with Peter and Rosa. They had bought a house at Menai, a suburb south of Sydney, and were doing very well. They then moved up to Southport, on the Gold Coast, and bought a lovely home there. Veronica and I visited them a couple of times when we were in Queensland doing shows, and then just lost touch, sometime in the 80’s, as you do. That was the last time I saw Peter. He was a very strong, fit man, who never smoked, so I was shocked to learn from Sally last year that Peter had died of Cancer on The 5th August 1997. Isn’t it strange how, even though you haven’t seen or heard from a good friend for a lot of years, there is still a ‘hollow’ in your life when you get the news that they have left this world! ------------------ 13.
