Silk Dying Machine ----------------- Message from Wayne Rogers (NZ) A few years ago, in the late 1960's or thereabouts, I invented a little item I called the Silk Dying Machine. It was an open ended, fold flat tube with a wooden rod that passed through the center and a handle on the outside. The appearance was inspired by Goodliffe's Potato Crisps in his book Simply Wizard. My prototype was built using one of the tubes from a Coke Bottle transposition put out by Supreme Magic in Bideford, Devon, England. The basic effect of my machine was along the lines of the standard dying the silks scarves, by passing them through a rolled paper tube. This effect is credited to David Devant. With the Silk Dying Machine, a string of three white silk scarves were fed into the top of the tube, the handle was turned and the scarves emerged at the bottom still tied but now dyed three different colours. The handle was removed and the tube was shown empty. The scarves could then be used in other effects. I remember at the time that Bert South was rather taken by the idea and I gave him permission to use the Silk Dying Machine in a department store promotion for Pantyhose (tights) Pantyhose were just becoming popular in New Zealand back then. Bert fed a pair of single nylon stockings into the machine and out came a pair of the new tights. Supreme Magic were the undisputed kings of cardboard magic props back in those days, so I sent a sample to Edwin and Ian, and for a two Pound credit, they marketed the Silk Dying Machine as a Supreme exclusive. As part of the deal I was to receive a copy of the finished props. For some reason I never received the Supreme model so I believe I still own the original rights. But that's another story. . . Fast forward to 1992 and I was compiling a book of my routines called Commercial Chicanery. It would have been great to include the Silk Dying Machine so I wrote to Barry Lamond who was the new owner of Supreme. I was interested in getting a copy of the original instructions and permission to include the item in my book. Barry was not sure what future plans he might have for my invention and he referred me to Ian Adair regarding the instructions. Ian also reiterated the advice that the effect had been bought outright by Supreme and was no longer mine to do anything with and so I left it at that. (For the moment) And now to 2005. . . I was reading a copy of the Ring2100 Digest on the internet, dated 11th of March, and came across an item from Adrian Harris in Scotland, asking for instructions to various tricks. Adrian had acquired a collection of props to dispose of on behalf of the widow of a deceased Scottish magician. Many of the tricks were without instructions. The Silk Dying Machine happened to be in that collection! As I am usually at least a couple of weeks behind in my Ring2100 reading, by the time I caught up with Adrian's posting and contacted him, he had already received a copy of the original instructions through a magician in (South?) Africa. What a small world! And so after all these years, for the first time I am finally in possession of a scanned copy of my original Silk Dying Machine instructions. Now I wonder if that Scottish lady still wants to sell the prop . . .? Wayne Rogers Chicane Enterprises Ltd Auckland, New Zealand www.nzmagic.com www.nzmagic.com/productpg.html ----------------- 3. Ben Bradshaw On Guinness World Records TV Show ----------------- Message from Ben Bradshaw (Aust) On the 18th of April 2005 I Set the World Record for the (worlds fastest underwater straight jacket escape). The escape took about 3 months in underwater training to achieve a final time of 38sec. There were many complications along the way, such as the jacket shrinking so much that I could no longer slide my arms out of the sleeves, making my usual method of escape impossible, The jacket had to be an ungimmicked (humane) and ordered to my chest size. The event was held at channel 7 studios in Sydney and will be featured on channel nine, 6:30pm Sunday the 12th of June. Bill Rex (Wim Shotanus) From Holland Passed Away ----------------- Message from Derek Hilton Bill Rex (Wim Shotanus) well known magician from Holland, who has lived in Spain for the last couple of years, passed away on the 2nd. of June. Bill was well known at conventions all over Europe. He was very active with the International Magic Conventions in Europe and in London and was, for years, a regular attendee at the British Ring conventions. He was a member of the British Ring and, for a long time, The Magic Circle. He will be remembered by those attending British Ring conventions for turning up at the Civic Reception in blue Dutch national costume and handing out blue tulips to the ladies present. Bill died in Malaga from cancer. ----------------- 9. In Answer To Richard Walls Comments ----------------- Message from Michael Chandler << Message from Richard Walls (NZ) As a regular visitor to Thailand over sixteen years, I do not doubt - or challenge - for one moment, the sincerity of what Michael Chandler writes about his experience in Thailand. Most of the precautions and comments he makes are sensible and can be found in virtually all of the reputable travel guides and information handed out by travel agents. Reference to shots in relation to 'typhoid' are, perhaps, over-dramatic. Any regular traveller to what we call 'near Asia,' would I suggest, wisely immunise themselves against the various strains of hepatitis. . I am, however, more concerned at the perception he gives in regards to Thailand per se and its customs. It is not an unsophisticated country. Unless you are really off 'the beaten track', most mendicants are available without prescription (you might need to explain in some detail to a pharmacist what you need them for ... which makes sense) as are mosquito repellents and the like. And yes, one must respect local customs but the Thais will always make certain you know of them when they are needed e.g. when visiting a temple. And, they do not easily take offence unless it is meant deliberately. What Michael has written may be relevant to a tourist guide but not here. What I - and I suggest other readers - would have found relevant was what magic Michael performed and how it was received. It was just some "Tips" not an account. A full report of the trip will be in the "Budget". Regards Michael Chandler ----------------- 10. He is currently the president of The Magic Circle, the most prestigious magic club in the world. The Magic Circle are this year celebrating their centenary and we are very proud to be bringing Alan and his wife Anne to Australia during this special time. Alan has been a professional working magician for 50 years, his trademark act of thumbtie, human gasometer, aerial fishing, hydrostatic glass and bill in rope is one of the finest stage acts I've ever witnessed and truly is classic stage magic at it's very best. In the 1970's Alan began writing for magazines and wrote several excellent books on stage magic. His original creations such as the classic mental effect Confabulation, the Shaxon flap enveloped and his superb torn and restored newspaper complete with drink in the news have been featured by working pros the world over. Alan befriended Robert Harbin, a close friendship which was to last until Harbin's death in 1977 at which point Harbin bestowed his props to Alan knowing that he alone had the ability to present them as Harbin would have done. I have been fortunate to see Alan lecture on several occasions and I know you are in for a real treat. His lecture contains some of the most practical working magic magic you will ever see including mentalism, close-up and stage magic. Alan has been honored with the Maskelyne, Berglas and Murray awards, a performance fellowship from the Academy of magic arts and induction into the SAM Hall of Fame. He is also ex-president of the British Ring. Alan has made over 50 TV appearances all over the world and, for lovers of comedy, Alan is also the magician featured in that classic episode of Mr Bean screened in more than 50 countries! He will perform on both the stage and close-up shows and will present his lecture and a unique multimedia presentation on Robert Harbin. Harbin was a magical genius with a presentation style which was unrivalled at the time or since. Many of Harbin's original tricks are still in the working repertoirs of professional magicians all around the world and his legacy is enormous. Alan Shaxon met Harbin through his work on cruise ships and they forged a close friendship which was to last until Harbin's death in the late 70s. Using unique video footage, personal recollections and trick demonstrations, Alan will give us perhaps the greatest insight we could get into the Genius that was Robert Harbin. The Great Australians Most of us recognise the names of the great Australian magicians of the past such as Levante, Rooklyn and Reveen. How many of us know what these names looked like? How they spoke? How they performed? What tricks they did? Kent Blackmore is a Sydney magician, author and historian who will join us for this special presentation where we will view, on the big screen, unique video footage of some of the great names of Australian magic. Many of these films are short clips, some of them have been transfered from old 16mm film, some are being seen here for the first time but they represent, in some cases, the only available footage of the men who are the heritage of magic in Australia. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 56 Over the years, I have on occasion, narrated the story to various close friends, Murray Hobson and his wife Margaret, being the last. I 'choked up', relating the tale to them at a tiny country hotel I had taken them to, for a few drinks etc - thank God, there were only the four of us in the bar. The full import of what happened, back in November 1969, really came home to me about a few months ago, when I was watching a video of the film - 'The Perfect Storm'. Those of you, who have seen this Movie/Film, will more fully comprehend the full impact of what happened - not just to me, but three others who were also involved. There is a particular scene in 'The Perfect Storm', which hit me like a 'ton of bricks'. My true-life 'adventure' rushed back as I watched the video; I went icy cold and started sobbing my heart out. It came from nowhere. Suddenly, I was re-living in real time - or so it seemed - the full, terrifying ordeal, as the thunderous, eleven Surround Sound speakers, plus the Widescreen Television provided the realism - I could even 'smell' the salty sea air! Guess I'm just one of those guys who come over all emotional very easily - I cry at the sad bits and roar with laughter at the funny bits. That's me, a 'real softie' at heart. Page 57 Hungry sharks - Raging Seas 'No Speakie the English' Tahiti 1969 - I was performing close-up magic one night in one of the outside Bars of the Maeva Beach Hotel - you would be hard-pushed to find a more idyllic place in which to entertain with magic; palm trees swaying in a gentle, balmy, ocean borne breeze, just yards away, the sea was glowing a glorious luminescent blue-green; shimmering silver sands that, beneath a beautiful Tahitian moon, sparkled like billions of tiny diamonds. It was pure magic. Some time during the evening, I met up with two young blokes who were around my age, more or less (26 years). They were doing the 'tourist bit' and were staying at the 'Maeva' for a few nights - obviously not short of a quid (plenty of money - quid, slang for the old English pound note), unlike your usual back packer. One came from Norway, the other from Sweden, and like most Scandinavian men I've since met while touring throughout Scandinavia with my show, they liked to have a drink - and how! They had hired a launch complete with pilot, from a small firm, one of many who specialize in that business, and were going fishing the following day. I was welcome to join them if I could drag myself out of bed in time - 11 o'clock in the morning. I was delighted to accept. Although I've fished for trout in lakes and rivers all over New Zealand, I had never fished out at sea before. I explained that I had to be back by late afternoon, if that was OK, as I had a show to perform that night - no problem, they were only going out for around four or five hours, so we would be back by 4pm. Next morning, not exactly 'bright-eyed and bushy-tailed', I met the 'boys' on the beach, just down from the bar where we had met the previous night. Sure enough, right on 11am, the motor launch roared around the point and into the cove, then with a mighty 180 degree turn that sent sea spray flying, powers down, and heaves to just off the beach, and I'm thinking 'JEE-Esus Kaarist - this bastard thinks he's Sterling Moss - on water!' Can't blame him really, this craft is built for speed as well as comfort; around 20 - 25ft long, with powerful twin outboard motors - down a short stairway to a lockable door which led into the cabin; bunks, little galley, fridge, toilet, radio, etc. very nice! REMEMBER, this is a Pleasure craft used for taking tourists out fishing, NOT a commercial fishing boat, nor was it anywhere near the size of the one that you see in the film, 'The Perfect Storm'. The Captain/Pilot was Tahitian, and didn't speak English. That was a worry, and most surprising considering the large number of English speaking tourists, including the mega-rich, who visit Tahiti. Never mind, he seemed to know what he was doing. We waded out and piled aboard, then headed straight out from the beach towards the west, over the reef which surrounds Tahiti, then cruised out to deep water. It was, as usual, a beautiful day; the sea calm and smooth as ice. We stopped and fished in various spots, had lunch, which was complimentary, plus booze, more booze and, even more booze, which was also supplied gratis - great stuff; there was not a hint of the terrifying ordeal that was heading our way. Someone pointed out to a flock of seagulls were circling and diving that way off in the distance. Our 'No Speakie the English' pilot yelled excitedly - 'SHARK'! That we understood. He 'gunned' the throttles and the outboards roared. The launch stood on its 'hind legs', and we took off; 'No Speakie English' was doing his 'Sterling Moss' (or should that be Malcolm Campbell?) act again. Arriving on the spot directly below the screeching seagulls, we looked down into the crystal clear water and, there they were, a dozen or so sharks, circling around. The water was so clear and still, it was difficult to judge the depth that the sharks were swimming at. I'm not sure what type of shark they were, we were way out in the ocean, in very deep water and could only just see the mountain tops of Tahiti on the horizon, so we must have been at least 3 miles out. They certainly were not reef sharks, nor were they Great Whites (as in Jaws). I think they may have been Mako sharks, and they certainly regard humans as something worth sinking their teeth into! Page 58 One of the boys decided to bait up, and hook one - for some reason our Tahitian 'Captain' made it plain that he wasn't too happy about that - God only knows why not, after all, we were out there to fish. Perhaps this wasn't the size of fish he had in mind for tourists, Snapper, or such like yes, Shark, No! 'TOUGH'! He hooked one - the reel screamed as the shark took off - stripping line from the reel at a phenomenal rate then, our fisherman started hauling the shark in; 'Jaws' was having none of it. He took the strain, and towed the launch all over the place - none of us had a clue which way was what. Eventually the battle won, and 'Jaws' was alongside the launch. I cannot remember how but somehow, we managed to get the shark on board the launch. It stretched the full width of the stern (around 10 foot) and it was snapping - viciously! Mr 'Speakie no English' was going crazy, gabbling away in French and I guess, Tahitian, frantically pointing up towards the sky, then down at the shark, and then at the water, continuously. We eventually guessed he wanted us to throw the shark back - 'No Bloody Way' - we all wanted some teeth as souvenirs, but why he was pointing up towards the sky was a total mystery? I, being a New Zealander, and part Maori, should have known, understood, what he was desperately trying to tell us - I'll explain later! ---------------- 14.
