Performing and explaining in plain English his philosophies and rational behind each effect. Chuck lectured in Melbourne on Wednesday night 24th August at my club the Australian Society of Magicians. As a lecturer myself, I believe there is only one yardstick, and that is the sales that you make. I watched as Chuck was swamped at his table immediately the lecture was over. He was rated as one of the best lecturers we have had for years. What came through was his professionalism, his warmth, sincerity and more important his knowledge of his subject. Although I have had Chuck's book "Mentalism Incorporated" since it first came on the market, I learned a heck of a lot myself. His triple prediction killed them and me. I am not going into detail of his lecture, for I believe, that would spoil the impact as he presents his wonderful effects. If you are contemplating having a lecture in your area, make sure you book Chuck. He gave us terrific value for money with practical and doable material. Do not think twice, just go. ---------------------- Message from Terry Seabrooke Magic Circle Centenary week at the Magic Castle. All performers are members of The Magic Circle. How can I see pictures of the 1993 DRAGON Award? ----------------- 3. Appearing Ladder Rip Off ----------------- Message from Bill Palmer I have been following the saga of the ladder since I first read about it in a previous e-mail of yours. Jimmy's reasoning is typical of the "I used a red silk instead of a green silk, so it's a different trick" mentaility. I was siding with Jim when MM ripped off Strat-O-Spheres, but Jimmy knows that he is no better than Rod Stiff. It's a pity that a company that produced so many really good, inexpensive pieces of magic has sunk so low. I wonder what his father-in-law (U.F. Grant) would say if he were still alive. ----------------- 4. Magic Is The Glue That Binds Us Together ----------------- Message from Andy Dallas President Elect Society of American Magicians I'm back! I am so excited about the preparations going on for the Louisville, Kentucky, SAM Convention in 2006. This looks to be shaping up into something you will not want to miss. Check the SAM website to find out about the riverboat cruise. As I travel around the world representing the SAM, I have discovered that magic is not the most important element of our great organization. Magic is the glue that binds us together. The most important part of the magic community is you. Your willingness to teach, mentor and share your knowledge, skills and entertainment with others reaches out in so many positive ways. I, for one, am proud to be associated with those of you who unselfishly give of your time to extend the experience of magic to those less fortunate than yourselves. I want to thank all of you who volunteer to organize and participate in your local magic club. It's magic that holds us together but it's all of you that makes being involved in the world of magic so wonderful. More to come. ----------------- 5. News: Big news for Steve Wyrick. He has signed a multi-year, $30-million agreement with The Shops in Desert Passage at the Aladdin to develop a 22,000-square-foot entertainment complex that will blend a state-of-the-art 500-seat theatre, ultra lounge and magic shop. Wyrick's multi-level complex will be located inside The Shops in Desert Passage at the Aladdin (which will be renamed Planet Hollywood next year), just 30 feet from a planned 2,000 room luxury tower. The new theatre, to be located on the second level of the facility, will include stadium seating and a stage that rivals the size of other Strip resort theatres. The complex will also be home to Triq, a signature ultra lounge located on the first floor. There will also be the Stever Wyrick Magic Shop, Magiq, which will offer his easy-to-learn magic tricks for adults and children alike and other fun illusions, including gift sets as well as his signature line of clothing. Or you'll be able to grab a quick bite at Flavour, before or after the show. The complex will be open 7 days a week. Wyrick says his new show will be "faster-paced, more edgy and uncut, yet have the quality production value of a Broadway performance. With the large stage, I'll be introducing four new colossal illusions in addition to some favorites from previous shows." The new facility is slated to open in late fall of this year. reviewjournal.com -- Lenny's Las Vegas August, 2005 Through August 1-31: Arden James, World's Greatest Magic Show, Greek Isle. Lewis (US) Hi fellow magic enthusiasts, In my prior article in this series I described how I became friends with juggling guru and master dice stacker, Todd Strong. * * * In the summer of 2001 Todd Strong asked me in a phone call whether I was aware of the fact that an annual juggling festival would be held in October at a park in Lodi, CA, a city located about 30 miles from where I live. I replied that I had never come close to a juggling festival in my entire life, but I was very interested in attending the one coming up in Lodi. Todd then supplied me with all the necessary details which were pretty simple. He went on to say that although he lived quite a distance from Lodi, namely on the border of Washington State and Canada, he would be traveling very close to Lodi at the time of the festival and would therefore attend it. He told me that he would be conducting a dice stacking workshop at the festival. When I heard that, I suggested that the two of us present the workshop together. He could cover dice stacking from a juggleršs point of view and I would follow up with a complete exhibition of my magic dice stacking routine, including my encore bits. Of course, since the audience would not contain any magicians, I would not explain how the magic parts of my routine were accomplished. I would just answer questions dealing with the mechanics of dice stacking. Todd thought my idea was a very good one and got it cleared through the appropriate official of the festival. When I arrived at the festival, I was quite fascinated to see that more than a third of the attendees were very busy practicing a wide variety of juggling disciplines: balls, clubs, cigar boxes (shape only), devil sticks, etc. A boy rode by me on a unicycle juggling a set of balls while he rode. This was a whole new world to me. In a separate posting, I will compare a juggling festival to a magic convention. I asked around for Todd and somebody pointed him out to me. He was busy teaching the art of the diabolo (Chinese yo-yo) to an eager group of pupils. He was a very friendly looking guy, carrying a solid 200 pounds on a six foot frame. He later told me that he was on the verge of turning 50. When he finished his diabolo teaching session, we found a relatively quiet place where we could get to know each other and better plan our joint workshop. To say that our workshop was a success would be a significant understatement. By the time we were through, a large number of the festivalšs attendees were straining to watch us. The workshop was delivered using a couple of card tables set up at the end of a pavilion located in the park where the festival took place. The only seats were those at the picnic tables located at the edge of the pavilion, so it was necessary for those who wanted to watch us to do it while standing. Todd made his presentation and then I showed how dice stacking could be used in a magic act. After we had both done our thing and had each fielded questions from the crowd, we invited the members of the audience to come up and try their hand at stacking if they so wished. Todd and I had both come equipped with several basic plastic dice cups as well as a supply of canceled casino dice, which are ideal for dice stacking. (Of course uncanceled dice are even better, but they are much more expensive than the canceled ones.) Now Todd and I had figured out independently that a melamine board measuring 2 x 2 feet made an ideal stacking surface. However, Todd, who was the more experienced lecturer, had added a one inch wooden guard rail around three sides of his board. This helped to keep the dice of the inexperienced stackers from flying off in all directions. After about another half hour of practice stacking and questioning, the crowd finally moved on to other activities. This was without a doubt the most successful dice stacking workshop that I have ever participated in. I went on to give the workshop alone for the 2002 and the 2003 Lodi juggling festival. (The festival couldnšt afford the park fee after that.) A decent number of festival participants attended my solo workshops, but I didnšt get anywhere near the over the top reaction that Todd and I received as a team. The fact that Todd was a very well known and highly regarded juggler was a significant factor in the success of the joint workshop. In my next article I will give the specific reasons that I regard Todd Strong as the worldšs best dice stacker. Then I will return to the main narrative of this dice stacking retrospective. Totally Destroyed - Jamie-G ----------------- Message from Jamie-G (Canada) Totally Destroyed By Jamie-G Effect: The magician shows a playing card both front and back, then rips the card in half and in half again, quartering the card. The magician produces a lighter and heats up the four pieces with an open flame. The card is opened to reveal that the it is restored back to normal. Props: A deck of playing cards and a duplicate card that matches the forced card. Setup: Prefold one of the duplicate cards, folding it in half from top to bottom and then in half again from left to right. The prefolded card is hidden behind the unfolded duplicate at the bottom right corner, or retained in finger palm. Method: Force the duplicate card by your favorite method. Once selected, set the prefolded card under the forced card at the bottom right corner so that, when you show the card from front to back, you can place three fingers over the prefolded card to hide it. Once you have shown the card this way you can move your fingers around and even switch hands as long as you maintain a hold on the prefolded card. Tear the selected card in half and place the torn piece on top of the other half. Tear the two pieces in half, adding the torn pieces to the top. This will leave you with four torn pieces of card on top of the prefolded card. You can show all the torn pieces front and back and no one will notice the prefolded card. If you would like, you can even have your spectator apparently sign the back of one of the torn pieces, but they are actually signing back of the prefolded card. Hold the cards in your right hand, remove the prefolded card into your left hand and say that you need to add some heat. Ditch the torn cards in your pocket as you reach for your lighter (or magic coin or wand). Take your lighter and play the flame over the outside edges of the card. If you have flash paper in your pocket with the lighter, you can fold the paper around the card and ignite it.You can even burn the card a little to add to the effect. Unfold the card slowly and show the spectator that you have restored their torn and signed card. Note: When using this effect for a child, I don't recommend using a lighter. I usually have a big coin or a pocket wand and either I rub the card or tap the card and it has the same effect without the flame. I have been doing this effect for about 15 years. There are a number of versions of the torn and restored card in the magic world. This version works very well for me. ---------------- 16. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 64 "Those were the days" Although this episode is aimed primarily at New Zealand's Variety Entertainers, who were based in Auckland during the early Sixties and Seventies, many may find it interesting from a historic point of view and will, perhaps, bring back some faded memories for many Kiwi 'Old-Timers', like myself. A few months ago Sally Phillips, (nee Metzer) my dear friend of many moons, sent me a copy of a newspaper cutting dated July 1971, which also displayed various photographs that brought back some special memories for me (it's a shame that Alan's magic e-Zine can't display photos). The write - up is headed "On with the show, they say". In the first photograph, Sally is bending over me as I'm lying on my bed of nails, asking if I'm okay (she actually remembers saying that), in the foreground is (the late) Peter Newberry, juggling his club's. (Sally and Peter worked together as 'Peter and Gaye' - a trick cycling and juggling act). Beneath the photo, the newspaper report says quote, 'Three of twelve Auckland entertainers staged a 10minute demonstration at the intersection of Queen and Victoria streets this afternoon, before being asked to move on by the traffic department. They were voicing their objections to a Licensing Control Commission', warning that Live Entertainment could be infringing the 'Sale of Liquor' Act at a North Shore restaurant, the 'Ranch House'. The entertainers, with their respective tools of trade, were not permitted to demonstrate. Traffic moved among them throughout the time they were on the intersection!' unquote. Another photo, which again depicts myself lying on the bed of nails, shows a trolleybus going by - the huge, right wheel is just inches from my head (I do remember that, I could feel the heat coming off the tyre, on the side of my face.) A third picture shows magician, 'Jon Zealando', with cane in one hand and doffing his top hat with the other, standing on top of me - again with Peter Newberry in the foreground juggling three clubs, his unicycle lying in the middle of the road, as I was - just behind me. In the background are the other entertainers whom, unfortunately, I cannot recognise after all this time. Also pictured is (the late) Curly Del Monte, he was the secretary of 'Actors Equity; he's carrying a large sign, which says, 'ENTERTAINERS OUTLAWED BY LICENSING LAW'. The caption under this photo reads, 'Auckland's lunch hour traffic was brought to a sudden stop when several local variety artistes decided to bring to the notice of the public that the licensing commission had announced its intension to exercise the existing licensing laws, prohibiting 'Visual' performances in licensed restaurants. Hundreds of startled Aucklander's were intrigued with the performance. I often wonder about this apparently incurable disease that strikes so many of those who have been 'Voted into Office' - that turns their brains and all sense of reasoning, into - mush. This 'disease' is particularly virulent here in England and, I notice that the current Presidency of the United States of America is absolutely riddled with it also! It wasn't just the Ranch House; every restaurant, Hotel, and nightclub in Auckland, the entire country, would have been affected. The potential effect this ludicrous law would've had on the livelihood of those artistes who entertained on a full-time professional basis, would have been utterly devastating. This is a bit of a nostalgia 'kick' for me, and perhaps for many other Auckland entertainers also; here is a list of some of the nightclubs/restaurants that we all used to work during the Sixties and early Seventies, that would have been put 'out of bounds' if this law had come into effect. The Toby jug, the Back O the Moon; my personal favourite - The Dutch Kiwi, The Colony, the Poenamo, Peter Pan Ballroom, The Montmarte, Paris Boulevard, the Shiralee, the Mocambo, and the Sorrento. I'm sure there are many more, but offhand I can't think of them right now. The first nightclub in Auckland was, as far as I'm aware, a joint called the 'Heaven and Hell', I believe that Ricky May, the famous Australasian jazz singer, (he died some years ago), began his career making toasted sandwiches etc. at the Heaven and Hell, and occasionally doing the odd singing spot as well. ---------------- 18.
