Lee Asher Lecture Tour ----------------- Message from Sëan Tretheway (Aust) Lee Asher! Lee Asher! Lee Asher! Don't miss this lecture! Funny, informative, interactive and you will learn something from him, he insists! His Losing Control technique for controlling a card to the top is outstanding. Get him to show you "real-time" first. Even after several goes, you still won't pick it, but when you learn the method, you will slap your head at its simplicity and audacity. But don't stop there; buy his "Losing Control" DVD. It's got to be the funniest teaching movie I've ever seen. Asher Twist will have everyone finger flicking for weeks, highly addictive, and Pulp Friction is another control that you will put into your tool kit immediately. However, if you're not into knuckle busters, Lee has something for everyone and he has some great almost self-working miracles as well. And don't let him get away without demonstrating his Acrobatic Double. ----------------- 3. Volunteer With The American Red Cross ----------------- Message from Carl Macan, Ring #129, Kansas City Elaine and I both volunteer with the American Red Cross and for the past two weeks were working in the Service Center helping to relocate over 900 families from the effects of Katrina. I was in Florida when Katrina was supposed to come to West Palm Beach, and we opened 11 shelters. Katrina, being of her own mind, turned South and hit Ft. Lauderdale instead, which made us very happy in West Palm Beach, and we closed the shelters. Because of personal business at this time, I/we could not go to New Orleans, but I will go for three weeks after the 1st of October. I'll let you know more about what is going on there when I get back home. ----------------- 5. Cy Keller's Passing ----------------- Message from Wesley James The following, from the September 14th Baltimore Sun, will fill in the details on Cy Keller's passing: Cyril A. Keller, a renowned sleight-of-hand man whose showmanship in magic set him apart during an apex of hocus-pocus in Baltimore, died of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma Friday at a Philadelphia hospice center. He was 77. A spade was never just a spade near Mr. Keller, who to the eye could wave his hand over a card to change its suit. With a clink, he could make seemingly seamless metal rings link. He could, of course, pull cards from behind his ears. "He was a Fred Astaire with cards," said Ken Horsman, who owns Ken-Zo's Yogi Magic Mart on South Charles Street, where Mr. Keller sometimes performed. "He was very, very smooth." Mr. Keller was born and raised in Baltimore, where he graduated from Loyola College in 1949. He worked for the Chicago-based Great Books Foundation for 12 years, starting in the mid-1960s, facilitating literature discussions along the East Coast. He could quote Shakespeare. What's more, family members said, he could name the play - and sometimes the act - when someone else quoted Shakespeare. He also loved jazz, poetry and musicals. "He had the most amazing mind," said his companion of 22 years, Bernice Bricklin of Philadelphia. "It was so enriching." Magical beginnings But it was in small Baltimore magic clubs during the 1960s where Mr. Keller flourished and refined an avocation he would continue long after retirement. With time, colleagues said, he became one of the nation's best close-up magicians. Showmanship - the ability to keep an audience interested in trick after trick - is an important part of the craft, and it was Mr. Keller's specialty, fellow magicians said. Perhaps less glitzy than disappearing acts and saw-a-woman-in-two routines, Mr. Keller kept audiences spellbound using only his hands. "It's hard to tell whether it's legend or reality, but the story about him is that one time he went to a party, took a borrowed deck of cards and did two hours of magic and never repeated a trick," said his son Richard Keller of Elkridge. "He had a sense of showmanship." In one favorite trick, called a color change, Mr. Keller would display the first card of a deck. He would wave his hand in front of it, like a paintbrush, and the card, suddenly, was a different suit. He'd then display his spare palm, proving to the audience that he wasn't holding the original card. He was an expert at the three-card monte, where three cards are laid out and a spectator picks one and tries to follows it through repeated moves. Sometimes Mr. Keller would even bend a corner of the key card as an aid. For the unsuspecting viewer, though, it was no use. The bent card, somehow, had been switched. Reputation grows Mr. Keller's reputation rose in the 1980s, during a resurgence of magic both nationally and in Baltimore. He performed at the acclaimed Magic Castle in Los Angeles. He invented dozens of tricks, family members said, including many described in magic books. When he wasn't wandering around the house practicing, he caught gigs at private gatherings and banquets. For 14 years he held a day job at First National Bank in Baltimore, helping to computerize paper documents. The irony of a bank hiring someone who made things disappear was not lost on Mr. Keller, his family or, apparently, the bankers. "He would always say, 'They never let me near the money,'" Ms. Bricklin said. After retiring in 1993, Mr. Keller moved to Philadelphia to be with Ms. Bricklin, whom he met while performing at a banquet. "You could sit almost anywhere and watch him do things and he could still find a way to fool you," said Richard Keller, who said he learned only one card trick from his father. "He was always working his magic," he said. Services were held yesterday at Mishkan Shalom Synagogue in Philadelphia. Also surviving are two other sons, Donald Keller of New York City and Michael Keller of Glen Burnie; two daughters, Caroline Clare of Finksburg and Barbara Henriksen of Des Moines, Iowa; eight grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. --------- Cy had many friends in magic - I am pleased that I was one of them--who I'm sure will want to know. ----------------- 8. Lewis (US) Meeting the Senator. #8 in the dice stacking series. Hi fellow magic enthusiasts, At the end of the prior article in this series I was preparing to meet Clarke "The Senator" Crandall for the first time and discuss his dice stacking booklet with him. Before I begin the current chapter in this series I would like to make one thing clear. I do not pretend to have had any long term relationship with the Senator. We ended up meeting around a half a dozen times. However, he was such a unique individual that these encounters are indelibly stamped in my brain. Several of you have written to me assuming that I am familiar with the Senator's career. I must admit that is not the case. I know a few salient facts about him and have had the pleasure of watching him perform in public twice. That is the full extent of my knowledge about him. * * * Some time in the early '60's I called the bar in which the Senator worked in order to get his schedule for the week. Based on that inquiry I picked a night to visit his son-in-law's bar to meet him. I packed my dice stacking paraphernalia and the Senator's manuscript in a small brief case and headed towards the bar in a car borrowed from a very good friend of mine. When I entered the dimly lit tavern, the Senator was the only other person in the room. I was quite amused when I first saw him. I was positive that it was him, because his face was an exact match of several caricatures of him that I had seen. The curly hair, the horn rimmed glasses (or were they steel rimmed?), and the distinctive nose all were the same as the drawings of him. I sat at the bar and ordered a "Seven & Seven." (I Hardly ever drink and this is one of the very few mixed drinks with which I am familiar.) After taking a few sips I said to the man behind the bar, "I bought your dice stacking book and found that it was a great guide for learning how to stack." (A slight exaggeration.) The Senator then looked at me steadily for a few moments. I knew this was the moment of truth. I was either going to get a full response or just an acknowledging grunt. The latter would mean that I had somehow failed to pass the Senator's qualifying round. After what seemed like an eternity he replied, "Does that mean you've learned how to stack dice?" I gulped and replied, "I think so." He then said, "Well let's see whether you have or not." He was no dummy and he figured that I had probably brought my own weapons with me. I reached into my briefcase, pulled out the gorgeous little cup that I had purchased from Magic, Inc. along with four of the five inlaid, 5/8 inch dice that had come with it. I put the dice on the bar, took a deep breath and managed to perform a creditable stack. He paused again, and finally said, "Not bad. Have you learned any of the other moves in the book?" I replied in the affirmative. He then said, "Well let's see them." My heart gave a little jump at that point as I realized that I had definitely succeeded in penetrating the Senator's renowned defenses. I once again took a couple of deep breaths and proceeded to do the regular stack, the two by two, the four in a row, and the "No shake stack" explained in the book. I finished up with the "Criss-cross" or "Cross Eyed Stack" that had also been covered. I then leaned back and waited for a reaction from the Senator. "Not bad at all," he commented, then added, "for a beginner." He went on to say "Here let me show you how I do it." He then proceeded to pull out his own dice stacking equipment that he kept in a compartment somewhere behind the bar. When I first beheld the Senator's dice cup, I fell in love with it. It was the most gorgeous dice cup that I have ever seen. I have been searching in vain for a similar one for the last 40 years or so. The Senator's cup was a small one, close in size to the one that I had bought. But that was where any similarity of the two cups ended. His was covered with beautiful engravings. It had an excellent caricature of him on it, along with a pair of dice and, I believe, a snake. He was quite aware that he had a showpiece and allowed me to stare at it for a while. When I got my breath back I asked "*Where* did you get that cup?" He replied that some craftsman in Juarez, Mexico had made it for him. I'll tell you folks, if I hadn't been so broke at the time, I might very well have flown right down to Juarez to have a similar cup made for myself. The Senator then proceeded to do effortlessly what I had just accomplished in my own "beginner's style." At the end of his exhibition he said "Now watch this." He then lifted up the cup that he placed mouth down on the bar and revealed a glass of some kind of liquid that he proceeded to drink. Now that's a great advantage that a bartender has over other close-up magicians. He has a very nice set of servantes at his disposal for magically producing various items as he needs them. When the Senator had finished his dice stacking demo, I took my cup and tried as best I could to imitate what I had seen him do. He gave me a slight nod and said "That's better. Why don't you go home and practice some more. Then come back and I might show you something that's not in my book." I then proceeded to pull his booklet our of my briefcase and asked him if he would inscribe it. He obliged. I am very sad to say that somehow during the several changes of residence that I have undergone since that first encounter with the Senator, his inscribed book has "vanished." That is a magic trick I wish had never taken place. In the next article in this series, I will describe the brief but enjoyable relationship that I had with the Senator. Regards, Tony L. Lewis ----------------- 11. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 68 Murphy's Law - what can go wrong will go wrong - with a vengeance! Calamity - my diaries for the years 1973/74 have vanished, lost somewhere within the swirling mists of time that pervades my bottomless aluminium trunk. Therefore, although my memories of various incidents during this time period are accurate, the actual dates and time lines cannot be verified. At one period during the years of 1972/73, I met David J. McKee, a promoter who was based in Auckland. Dave managed a band called 'NOAZARK'; they had a hit record called 'Money's Made to Burn', which was produced on Dave's own recording label - 'Kontact Recording Co. Ltd'. He also managed and recorded various vocalists, among them: Brent Brody, Angela Ayers, Maria Dallas, and Tom Sharplin. As an Entrepreneur/Promoter, Dave organised various shows, mainly in hotels, but also produced and presented Rock Concerts in Civic theatres and Town Halls around the North Island. We worked with David on many of these shows, both hotels and concerts, in fact, I think David may have been one of the first to combine a Visual/Speciality act with a Rock Show - my rather naughty mime act was particularly successful in that environment! For a time, he also toured my Hypnotism Show around the North of the North Island of New Zealand. (More of this later). As I explained previously, the actual year/dates are lost however, during one late December; there were two shows that we will never forget. We had been booked for a private function in Wanganui on a Saturday night and, for the Sunday night Dave had booked us to perform our hypnotism show at one of his rock concert's in Tauranga. The concert was to be of three hours plus in length, starting at seven P.M. The first half, to run for approximately 90 minutes, was rock bands and singers then a short interval followed by my hypnotism show. Veronica and I decided that after the show in Wanganui (we figured around midnight) we would drive right through the night to arrive in Tauranga early-morning, a seven or eight hour journey and a distance of around 440miles. We could then sleep all day and be nice and fresh for the show later that night. That was the plan -HA; 'Murphy' and his bloody laws had other ideas! Wanganui is on the Lower West coast of the north island of New Zealand and the trip involved travelling up through the central area to Taupo, on to Rotorua then across to the east coast to reach Tauranga. The first 100 miles, Wanganui to Raetihi was the worst part - a tortuous, narrow, winding twisting road, all loose stone chippings with occasional passing bays. On one side of the road there are hills/mountain's, on the other, a drop of several hundred feet straight down to the Mangawhero River - Average driving speed is around 30/40 mph. It is a very desolate, rugged area. If you broke down, tough - you just had to wait until another car came along to get any kind of help - there were no mobile phones in those days! It wouldn't surprise me if the road has since been tar sealed and straightened out a bit - after all, I'm talking about 30 odd years ago. We actually lived in Wanganui for a short time and travelled on that road many times - you sure heaved a sigh of relief when you got to the end of it. The reason why I have tried to 'paint 'a reasonably descriptive picture of this road/area is relevant to the nightmare that was to befall us, and which will become clear to you later on. 'Cold Duck'; this drink had just come onto the market in New Zealand - it's a long time since I've drunk it but I seem to remember it was a sort of 'Bubbly Champagne'. They had cases of the stuff at the show we did in Wanganui. Anyhow, our 'Dressing Room' for that night was a largish broom cupboard that we just managed to squeeze into and, all during the evening somebody would stick his or her head into the cupboard to say 'G'day' and pass in a bottle of this 'Cold Duck'. The show went down 'Great Guns' and, as you might imagine, with the totting up of several 'sips' of Cold Duck, we became very, very happy! As we had predicted, by around midnight the show was over and we had packed all our equipment into the car; the weather was lousy the rain was absolutely chucking down. We had a long drive in front of us and, because of the deafening thunderclaps, we didn't hear 'Bloody Murphy' clapping his hands and laughing with glee as we headed off. ---------------- 12.
