Please Read About Joe Riding's Webpage -------------------------------------------- Message from Pam I`d like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Sadly this is my 1st Christmas without my dad JOE RIDING, who I'm sure you know passed away suddenly on 23rd April this year. I've been spending the last few months reading through all of my dad's courses, effects and newsletters and slowly compiling a new webpage, though with the same web address - http://joesmagic.co.uk My dad left me the rights to All of his work in order to support my daughter, Sally, his only grand daughter. Sally who is only 13 years old and her partner, Jake Bennett, are at present Great Britain's number 1 junior ice skating pairs, they have this week been given an Olympic Gold Passport which only selective sports people who show talent to be future Olympians are given, this enables them to train at numerous sports centres around the country and have available medical help and physio. Earlier this year, sadly after my dad died, they were chosen to represent Great Britain at 2 International Grand Prix events, these are prestigious events and were an incredible achievement especially for Sally as she was the youngest competitor to compete as just been old enough by rules to do so. They competed first in September in Bratislava, Slovakia and finished in 5th place and then again in Zagreb, Croatia in October and finished again in 5th place, this finished a fantastic year for them as they were earlier chosen by the British Olympic Association as future 2010 Olympians and sent to a training camp in Gdansk, Poland and were also selected for the Great Britain team, but their greatest achievement to date is to of proved their ability and talent and to of been chosen yesterday to represent Great Britain in the Junior Worlds in March 2006. I just wish with all my heart my dad was here to see her, he worked so hard to support us and always believed Sally would be a champion. Sally has overcome a great deal of heartache in the last few years, first loosing both her uncles (my brothers) then loosing my mum - at just 5 years old Sally helped me and my dad nurse my mum at home. But this year has been such a hard struggle as we lived with my dad for the last 7 years, he was our only close family and he was the most fantastic father/grandpa anyone could ever imagine, he lived for us - mainly Sally and I just hope he's now watching over her and watching her do what he always new she would - she's most definitely got his determination AND wicked sense of humour - she can also do some great balloon animals and has a gift for Poker!! Please help me carry on doing what my dad started and that is to support Sally with her dream of representing Great Britain at the Europeans 2008 and the Worlds 2008 (she's not old enough till then!!!!) and then the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. There is so little financial help within ice skating due we believe to it being a minority sport and therefore all proceeds from every effect, course, newsletter of my dads will go into a skating fund for Sally - of course if anyone out there who would like to help in anyway whatsoever with funding, advise or any kind of idea's how to raise money please get in touch, I'm alone now in this and it's a frightening prospect BUT Sally will compete and I can assure you she'll do what my dad always knew she was capable of. Please visit my dad's webpage - this month as a Merry Christmas and Welcome I've placed a free card effect of my dad's for everyone called - `Pool Table Aces`. I'll be placing past effects on the site and old favourites, newsletters and courses etc. Once I find my feet I'll be selling complete tricks. If anyone would like to see anything they've heard my dad had please get in touch. News Report On Gerry McCreanor -------------------------------------------- Message from Graham Etherington Forwarded on by Tony Wilson Hi Everyone This is a news report on Gerry McCreanor, (Mr Matches) of South Australia. Not everyone on this news list will know him but he is one of the best liked Magicians anyone would like to know and for many years was behind the very successful Adelaide Conventions. Last Wednesday Gerry was admitted to hospital and is currently on anti-biotics, he lost the use of his legs and it looks like he will be bed or wheelchair bound from now onwards. As most who know him the big C has been a problem for him. Cynthia seems to think he might come out of hospital some time this week after which he will have to have a visiting nurse. I know a card, from those that know him, sent to 2/27 George Street, Norwood Sth. Aust. 5067, would really cheer him up. Lewis (USA) Mastering "The Takeoff" (Decapitation) #15 in the dice stacking series Hi fellow magic enthusiasts, The last two articles in this series were devoted to reviews of dice stacking reference material. Any additional such reviews will not be included in the main series. They will appear separately. In article #12 I completed my description of the notorious K.C. Card & Dice company where I acquired a custom made set of eight inlaid dice that have stood up amazingly well over the last four and a half decades. Now it was time to bring my dice stacking skill up to a level that justified my using such a set of classy dice. So I sat at my formica topped kitchen table (a hot item at that time) and practiced diligently for at least a couple of hours a day. Working on all the suggestions that I had received from Senator Crandall was a pretty straightforward business. However, mastering The Takeoff was an entirely different matter. There was nobody available to teach me the technique for what is fast becoming a common move in dice stacking. Furthermore, there was absolutely no reference material available that described the necessary technique. Keep in mind that this was the pre-video era. Therefore, generally, sleights had to be acquired by reading about them in a book Of course if an aspiring magician was fortunate enough to get lessons from a polished performer, he/she had it made. Finally, there were lectures provided for a reasonable fee by certain organizations. At that time the late, great Frances Ireland Marshall was the major provider of such lectures in the greater Chicago area. When Magic, Inc. moved to the Near North Side of Chicago, Frances acquired a single story wooden structure next to the store that was an ideal site for presenting lectures and shows to about fifty magic enthusiasts. Once a month a well known magician of that period would appear there. I soaked up a lot of excellent magic at those presentations. I also got to meet some of the "big names" of that time. However, there were no dice stackers in that group. At that time it was a skill that very few magicians had mastered. Therefore, I was faced with the task of acquiring a sleight that I had only heard described in general terms. I wasn't completely sure that it could be done. I know that seems very hard to believe in this era of excellent teaching videos. My doubts were not without basis as there was another dice stacking feat that was described to me that actually is impossible. The story was making the rounds that a bartender in Juarez Mexico could stack dice and dimes alternately. To the best of my knowledge this feat cannot be done. I believe that it turned out that the performer started out with four dimes sandwiched between four stacked dice. The bartender then "decapitated" the four dice one by one and stacked them while the dimes fell beside the stack. I practiced The Takeoff for hours without success. At that time my younger brother was living with me. He was perfecting his skills as a guitar player in the bedroom while I was working on dice stacking in the kitchen. Over the years we periodically reminisced about those joint learning sessions. In my kitchen there was a glass paneled cabinet for storing dishes. Fortunately the panels were pretty small and fairly easy to replace. One day I got so frustrated with the damn Takeoff that, in a fit of pique, I hurled my leather cup at the cabinet. It went right through one of the glass panels. To this day I show my audience the healthy sized nick on the side of the cup that was the result of my losing my cool. Then finally *I DID IT*. I decapitated and then stacked four dice, one by one. At first I couldn't believe it, but I managed to repeat the feat in about half of my subsequent attempts. After one more week of practice, I was performing The Takeoff well over ninety percent of the time. Eventually I got to the point where I almost never missed. Now if I lay off for a while, it only takes a couple of hours to get back up to speed. At age 73 I consider this to be quite a blessing because so far I have escaped the nightmare of aging magicians, arthritis. As I mastered The Takeoff, I also worked on the rest of my dice stacking moves. Although it isn't that difficult a move, I got deep satisfaction in stacking eight dice into two four dice towers. As I prepare to show the stacks I patter about how I picked up eight dice for the price of five at a sale and can't figure out what to do with them. Just before the stacks are revealed, I comment on what a mess the dice are in. The double stack always gets a great audience reaction. Now I felt that I was ready to visit Senator Crandall again and show him how I had progressed. In my next article I will describe the Senator's reaction to my dice stacking progress. You might find it somewhat surprising. I certainly did. Regards, Tony L. Lewis - tonylew@concentric.net ----------------- 14. The Amazing Orchanté Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchanté)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 79 Hypnotic 'high-jinks' at The Wellington Opera House and beyond. Like Franquin, I have NEVER 'acquired subjects' using 'hypnotic/suggestibility tests' (except for pure demonstration/entertainment purposes) such as the 'hand -clasp' - where you ask the entire audience to interlace their fingers and then, with the power of suggestion, tell them that, ".you cannot pull them apart". Invariably, there are many who cannot! 'Unscrupulous' hypnotists take an unfair advantage of this, FORCING these people, against their will, to go on the stage so that they can get their fingers unlaced - Most Unprofessional; they are NOT willing participants! Again, as with FRANQUIN, all the folks who have appeared on my stage have always been - Happy and willing, Volunteers! I've digressed yet again. Can't help wondering if this constant digression is not some sort of 'sickness' - one that befalls those of us who used to be 'Quite (In)-Famous', who now considers him or herself, lucky to get 'A mention'! Where was I - oh yes the 'Opera House'. Like most other hypnotists, when doing two or more nights in one Hall/Theatre, I would give out free tickets to all my subjects for the following night(s) as I thanked them at the conclusion of the show. Most if not all would return, and consequently, of their own free will, would once again end up back on stage. The reason? Not only did they enjoy the experience it was also a 'TON of FUN', for them as well as the audience. It's now FRIDAY night and I've called for volunteers for the hypnotism show. Again there's the usual stampede for the stage. I couldn't believe it! Around 70 free tickets and there is not one familiar face, not one soul, none of the volunteer/subjects from the night before (Thursday), had returned! Unheard of, I was flummoxed! Before I wake up the 'subjects' at the end of my hypnotic show, I always give them the following Suggestions. " Tonight, when you go to bed, you will have the best night's sleep you have ever had in your life and, when you wake up, at your usual time in the morning, you will feel - you will be, incredibly refreshed and full of zing" etc. This time I made a terrible 'Faux Pas' (it was also, the last time. You do learn hopefully, from your mistakes)! For some reason, instead of just saying, "When you wake up in a morning" etc, I also added the day! I said, "When you wake up on SATURDAY MORNING". I totally forgot that this was only - THURSDAY NIGHT! To my 'subjects', this categorically meant that they - would go to bed that night -Thursday (the 13th) sleep through all the following day FRIDAY (the 14th) and FRIDAY NIGHT, finally waking up on the - SATURDAY MORNING (the 15th)! No wonder they didn't turn up! Now this is quite feasible, as I personally know. Like most hypnotists from the past, I have often done a 'WINDOW-SLEEP', where you put some body 'to sleep' (usually an attractive young lady) in a shop window for two or three days. It sure made for fantastic publicity! What was surprising was that neither myself or Veronica, or anybody else in the show/audience for that matter, had picked up my 'Faux Pas'. Even more astonishing, was that NOBODY contacted the theatre in a blind panic to tell us that 'SO AND SO - WAS STILL ASLEEP'! Oh well, FRIDAY'S night show swung along as usual - it's just a little easier and quicker when you have 'Tailor-Made' subjects from the night before. Once again, at the conclusion of the show, free tickets were handed out to my happy volunteers and, came SATURDAY night, most of them turned up - YIPPEEE! Although the show in itself was a great success... well, the scribble in my old diary of 1972 says it all. I had scrawled - 'mighty show but what a bomb. A financial disaster'! I'm sure glad it wasn't my money! I felt very sorry for Gerald and his partner. They just couldn't understand that the 'Type' of publicity that they had used to promote their highly successful Motor Show just wouldn't 'cut it' for a 'Stage Show' in a big city. Especially at such a famous, prominent establishment as -'THE WELLINGTON OPERA HOUSE' which caters for all the big International (as well as national) STAGE SHOWS and 'SUPERSTARS' from the world of 'SHOWBUSINESS! ---------------- 15.
