"Strange and Unusual Hobbies" - Simon Lovell -------------------------------------------- Message from Simon Lovell Just thought you might like to know that my one-man Off Broadway show "Strange and Unusual Hobbies" has now passed its one year anniversary and is still going strong. The Wall Street Journal called it, "A dazzling 70 minute show!" and the NY Daily News said it was, "Mindblowing" so I guess it pleased the reviewers! It's every Saturday night at 8pm at the SoHo Playhouse on VanDam St. between 6th and Varrick and has an open-ended run. If magicians visit they can ask for me and get a special discount on their tickets. -------------------------------------------- 4. From Magician To Speaker Part Six -------------------------------------------- Message Quentin Reynolds Last week we looked at the different ways speakers earn their incomes. Before going into how you craft your speech let's look at how you as a magician can use public speaking as a means of growing your business. Not all speakers look on speaking as a full time career. With many it is just one stream of income. The really clever ones use speaking to leverage their other businesses. Let's say you've been following these postings for the last few weeks and maybe you're thinking. "That's OK, but I don't have a topic I'm an expert in and I don't want to spend the time becoming an expert. But I still like the idea of speaking." Why not put together a talk based on your experiences as a magician. Now let's be honest. This isn't too likely to get you booked at top fees anywhere. But it certainly can get you speaking locally either for free or at lower fees. If nothing else it will help make you a mini-celebrity in your area. At the beginning you want to get as much experience as possible. The best advice when you start off is speak everywhere you can and as often as you can. The main benefit for you is visibility in the marketplace. If your talk is humorous and contains at least some useful information you will be remembered. When the question of booking entertainment comes up, you are already in their mind. All other things being equal they are more likely to book someone they already know. Next week I'll go into the detail of crafting such a talk but in the meantime think back over your career as a magician and make a list of all the things that have happened. Make a list of all the problems you've encountered and how you've overcome them. The unexpected interruption at a show, hassles of travelling, the magazines you read, the people you've met, the conventions you've attended. Next you want a title for your talk. This is the hook for your booker so make it a good one. Robert Fulghum has done really well from an essay he wrote which turned into the bestselling book "All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten". A few ideas to get your imagination going: "Secrets to handling thirty screaming six year-olds at a birthday party." "The Life-Changing Lesson I learned from working with disabled children." "What really happens behind the scenes at a magic show." "The secret life of people who work in restaurants." "How a balloon doggie saved my life." If you read any of those headlines in a newspaper, they would grab your attention and you would read further. That's the kind of title you want for your talk. Next week I'll show you how to craft it. © 2006 Quentin Reynolds. Quentin Reynolds works as both magician and speaker. You can read about one of his programs at http://www.speakinschools.com -------------------------------------------- 5. Nick Lewin Lecture Review - Mike Easterbrook -------------------------------------------- Message from Mike Easterbrook (NZ) Last evening I attended the Nick Lewin Lecture in Auckland. Let me tell you that I don't normally attend too many. Most visiting magicians seem to arrive as dealers and demonstrate and sell as many tricks as they can in their allotted time. It is also a 370km round trip from where I live so I do not visit lecturers without some prior knowledge. I'd previously bought Nick's old lecture notes and thought... Here is someone who KNOWS what he is talking about. To coin a phrase from Ken Brooke "it was good, get on with the job, magic and comedy". I'm a working magician. I had to come back to my city after the lecture as today (Sunday) I drive another 100km north to do a show. For me personally I could have listened to this gentle giant for another couple of hours. Well, he seemed like a giant to me, who is somewhat vertically challenged! After the intro by Alan Watson, Nick talked about what it is to be a pro. He knows! Five years as the first afternoon magician in Las Vegas. Others, most notably, Mac King have followed and created a whole new market for magic. In the last twenty years Nick has only ever done 2 lectures. One in Austria and the other at the Desert Seminar. He is too busy working. He did classical magic. Colour Changing Handkerchief, with useful tips that can only come from years of doing it. Note in The Lemon which actually turned out to be a thought of a card. The signed note turned up later. It was a masterpiece of routining and fun with some standard stuff. Eugene Burger said magicians are obsessed with "the tyranny of the new" Nick has taken advice from the best in the business. Ken Brooke, Fogel, Roy Johnson and especially Nick'. He's done the hard yards. Nothing complicated. Some may have been disappointed because there was nothing to BUY!. I heard one guy say he'd come with $75.00 and could not spend it. I spent $40 on petrol and $25.00 on the lecture. I got a cup of tea and so much wise advice I can't think why I am not onto a cruise ship! It was well worth more. So much sage advice about the linkages between the effects, the way to behave, the way to dress (if you are on a cruise ship and much more.) There were some good questions from the floor which Nick answered and he made himself available afterwards for further discussion. What more could you ask? It was probably too cheap. Where else do you get this sort of info except from someone who has, as I said before done the hard yards. Nick did the classic 6 card repeat. I do this all the time. It is a McComb version from an old Abra. It always gets (for me) a huge reaction. Closed with the Torn and Restored Newspaper. The seldom seen Elmsley version as a tribute to the late great Alex Elmsley. It all happened slowly and quite magically. It was just great. Other clubs should get on the internet and book this man. Just remember.... You won't come away with the latest gimmick to throw in the drawer but you will come away thinking... Now here is someone who knows the business. If there ever was a 'mantle' to be passed on from Billy it probably should go to Nick Lewin. Ask him to tell you about 'The Booker from Hell" conversation he had with the old Irish leprechaun! He was thanked on behalf of IBM Ring 160 and Magic New Zealand by Tony Wilson. Nick. Thanks from me too. It was the best lecture in a long time. Please visit again. -------------------------------------------- 6. S.A.M. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 88 'Strange goings on'- in Wellington City! I'm sure that I mentioned earlier that my diaries for the year's 73/74 have vanished, probably somewhere in the unfathomable depths of my aluminium trunk. Most of my memories of various incidents during those two years are still with me, except finite details and actual dates. At one point during 1973, we lived in Wanganui then for some reason decided to move to the capital city of New Zealand, Wellington. For the life me, I can't remember or understand why - 90 percent of the city/Housing is built on hills and the place is renowned for the ultra strong winds that blow there. The city is very exposed to the elements and the inhabitants are the butt of many a comedian's jokes - e.g. how everybody walks backwards, with a stoop - of 45 degrees etc. We found a nice little house to rent in a suburb called it Eastbourne, which is right across the harbour, directly opposite the City. The front lounge room had a massive window, giving us a fabulous panoramic view out over the harbour. At night it was particularly beautiful - with the city lights across the harbour twinkling like stars in the distance. The little street/roadway outside the front door was only about ten-foot wide, with the sea just on the other side. A two ft. high stonewall, which ran the entire length of the street, was supposed to be a sea-break - protection from the huge waves that could develop from the massive storms that would whip up in the harbour. Many a time during violent cyclonic storms (for which Wellington is infamous), with fierce winds howling like demented banshees, we watched in awe and with not a little apprehension, as the sea thundered and smashed into and over the 'minuscule' wall. Water and sea spray was flung 20 ft into the air, easily bridging the narrow street and crashing into the front of house. It was a miracle that the windowpane didn't cave in! Sure was exciting; it was the only thing about Wellington that was exciting, as far as we were concerned. It was only five years earlier, APRIL 10th, 1968 (now 38 years ago) when Cyclone 'Giselle', the most ferocious storm in New Zealand's history, left a path of destruction throughout the North Island before it hit Wellington and sank the 9000 tonne inter - island car / passenger ferry, THE 'WAHINE.' (At the time, the 'WAHINE' was the largest and most modern car ferry in the world!), with the LOSS OF 51 LIVES. Many of the survivors - and bodies, were washed up in the boiling sea and surf all along Eastbourne Beach, not far from were we lived. 'WAHINE' is Maori for - 'BEAUTIFUL WOMAN'. We gradually became aware of a 'Strange Smell' that was emanating from somewhere in the lounge room but we couldn't pinpoint from where. Then one night whilst watching TV, we heard a scuffling noise and my first thought was, quite naturally, mice! By the time I got up and hit the mute button on the TV set (no remote controls are those days) the noise had stopped. This went on night after night, it was driving me crazy! I felt and probably looked like the demented 'TOM - (for the 'Uneducated', from the 'Tom and Jerry' cartoons -Tom is a cat, Jerry, a mouse) - looking for 'JERRY'! Meanwhile, the smell was becoming stronger and it had a decidedly 'Fishy Whiff' to it, which was now Beginning to 'Stink to High Heaven'! The scuffling sounds, and the smell, intensified; was now accompanied by 'BIZARRE STRANGLING NOISES'. Me, being me, was beginning to think - 'Poltergeists', 'Ghosts' and other 'Not Nice Entities'! What the bloody hell WAS this? It is very difficult to pinpoint a smell or strange noises that seem to emanate from everywhere; to anybody looking on, I must've looked like a demented loony, as I incessantly went around sniffing around the room. One evening, around a week later, both Veronica and I nearly jumped out of our skins as an Unholy Scream emanated from somewhere beneath our feet! Lifting the carpet revealed floorboards. In some trepidation, I began ripping them up! Fish! The unbelievable stench of rotting fish that bellowed up from below caused our stomachs to turn somersaults. Retching like mad I grabbed a torch and shone it down into the hole. I couldn't to see a thing, except several pairs of yellow/red eyes that, reflected by the light, glared back at me. 'YE GOD'S', my overwrought imagination screamed, 'YOU'VE STRUCK A NEST OF VAMPIRES'! CONTINUES NEXT WEEK!!! ---------------- 16.
