He fell on the non-sharp broken end of the arrow while trying to hang a light fixture. The arrow pierced through his stomach, liver, an artery and several inches in his heart. It is through speed of hospitalization, modern surgical techniques and Jonathan's will to live that he continues with us today. His surgeon, Dr. Edwin Hayashi said this injury is always fatal and it is a miracle Jonathan is alive. He is recovering well after several hours of surgery including open heart surgery. He is currently in French Hospital in San Luis Obisipo, California under Claude Yarbrough. 1911 Johnson Ave, San Luis Obispo, 93401 - (805) 543-5353. Meetings With Remarkable Magicians # 29 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message from Nick Lewin In which Albert Goshman re-invents the dinner show. In a community crowded with 'one of a kind' individuals nobody has ever come close to replacing Albert Goshman. I first met Goshman at the Magic Castle outside the Close-up Gallery. It was Friday lunchtime and I had just finished performing my show. Proudly featured in my performance was Ken Brooke's sponge ball routine. I was using the set of 'Goshman Sponges' that I had purchased a few years before in London. After the show Albert stopped me as I passed by and said, "Those sponge balls aren't clean enough to make someone hold. Buy some new ones!" In England genuine Goshman sponge balls were not only expensive but also hard to find. The tendency was to use them as long as possible. The moment I thought about it I knew Goshman was right. I mention this story because it might just make me the only magician ever to be chided by Albert on the topic of personal appearance! The most amazing thing about Goshman was the difference in how his magic looked and how he looked. The magic was neat, smart, organized and a joy to behold. Albert on the other hand consistently looked a mess! He always looked as rumpled as an unmade bed dressed in clothes that needed dry cleaning a week ago! Albert really liked his food and he was a messy eater, it was easy to track his meals for the day by the trail of the stains on his clothing! When at the Castle performing in the dining room Albert was a frequent visitor back in the kitchen area where he ate a 'progressive' supper. One evening Albert was hired to entertain a group of VIP's in the Houdini room. The event planner wanted to impress her guests and let it be known that she wanted Goshman to look his very best for the group. In fact she paid a premium to ensure that this would be the case. Albert's wife packaged him of the Castle in a spotless tuxedo and even a pair of gloves to keep his hands clean. He looked as elegant and sophisticated as anyone could remember seeing him. The event planner, aware of Albert's natural tendencies, even came up with a plan to keep him looking that good. The Maitre 'D and kitchen staff had all been visited and cash had changed hands to ensure that no food would be given to Albert prior to showtime. Albert was not happy about this. When it came time for his show, an immaculate and stain-free Albert Goshman, sat down in the Houdini room behind a freshly polished saltshaker and as always wowed the crowd with his brilliant close-up show. The event planner sat in the back of the room delighted that her plan had worked so well. However, just prior to Albert's rising cards routine, he made direct eye contact with the party planner and proceeded to pull a large beef rib from his inside jacket pocket! Never breaking eye contact with the astounded party planner he ate a few bites of the rib and then casually replaced it in his pocket before proceeding to finish his show. Game, Set and Match to Goshman! Please send bricks and bouquets to nicklewin@earthlink.net -------------------------------------------- 6. Best Of Friends Volume 3 - Harry Lorayne -------------------------------------------- Message from Ian Baxter (Aust) Harry Lorayne tells me that Best Of Friends Volume 3 is 'at the printer' and will be released in the New Year. This will keep the Close-Uppers out of mischief for a while! Same hardbound, 400-plus pages as the two previous volumes. -------------------------------------------- 7. 5-Card Repeat PDF -------------------------------------------- Message from Ben Many thanks to all who donated and downloaded the 5-Card Repeat PDF in memory of fellow magician Michael Martin. The final totals and details are now on the website: http://magic.cameracheckpoint.com.au/index.html (and there's still a chance to download by clicking on the picture of the booklet). -------------------------------------------- 8. Steps To Your Success: The Promotional Kit - 4 -------------------------------------------- Message from Kyle Peron (US) E-Mail: Magic4u02@aol.com The promo packets I mail out to my main market usually includes two main elements 1) The lead generation or sales letter and 2) my promo packet. Let me talk a bit about each, what is included in them and why I do it the way I do. Perhaps this might help give insight when creating your own. Keep in mind that at the point of me mailing these out, several things have already taken place. These mailings are not sent out as a first time contact with the suspect. Before I mail these out I have already: - Figured out the general areas in which I want to work - Obtained a client list in the market I want to work in my own area. - Cold-called the people on my list NOT to sell to them but to simply ask who the entertainment decision maker is and if I might be able to mail them my packet for consideration. - Update and finalize my contact list with the new information obtained from my cold calling. This means that my list I am mailing out to has been what I refer to as pre-qualified. This means that I am sending information out to the RIGHT decision maker for that market and there for I have a much greater percentage of return rate on my promo packet mailings. With all of this said, I send out a letter along with my promo packet to the entertainment contact (decision maker) I have on my master list. - Lead Letter: Because I am sending this letter along with my promo packet, I tend to keep my letter to one single page in length. My goal is to simply get their attention, peak their interest so they want to open the packet and get the details of what I can do for them and how I can solve the problems they are faced with. My letter is personalized to the contact I am sending to. This is an important step so that the person feels it is not so much a form letter or a solicitation. Now you have a better chance of them opening your mail any ways because of your pre-qualification process. They know to expect something in the mail from you. In the letter I give them a feel for who I am, exactly what event or events I am interested in helping them with, a little about similar clients I have worked for in the past as well as a quote or two from previous customers. I also make sure to end the letter with a call to action to give them incentive to contact me for further information and to get them to make the next logical step in the sales process. A call to action can be anything from a discount coupon you include in the letter to a free report that they can get from you that tells them the top 10 things to remember when hiring for entertainment to even a percentage off their price if they simply contact you in a said amount of time. All these are incentives to get the prospect interested in taking that next step. - Promo Packet: This is really where I go into detail about the who, what, when, why and how of my performances and what I can do for their event. Everything they could ever want to know about me and the types of shows I do is placed in this kit for them to review. However, I make sure that my kit does several things for me. - That it is of top quality in both design, presentation and the materials that I use - That it is clean in appearance and easy for them to follow - That each section of the promo is clear so that they can find the exact information they are interested in easily In my promo kit, I keep each section by itself on its own 8.5 by 11 sheet of paper. This is printed on my color letterhead paper and run through my printer at home. Because I do it this way I solve several problems: - I can customize each sheet to my client without the expense of having to reprint my entire kit over again. - I can update the page with new information after each event I do. If a new client gets added, I can add them with ease. - It keeps my overall cost down since I am paying only for my initial stationary print job. Now because each section is on its own page, this makes it very easy for the prospect to flip through the pages and find the exact information that they might be interested in most. It is all categorized for them. Some of the categories I try to include as separate sheets are: - Bio - A short bio that helps introduce yourself, who you are and what you are all about. - Client Listings - List of the various clients you have worked for in categories so it is easy to read. - Client Quotes - List of some of the top quotes you have obtained over the years from other events and or markets you have worked. - The Kyle and Kelly Difference - This is my page that explains in detail why our performance is different then any other they may have had in the past. It explains a bit of the features of my festival show as well as how these directly can benefit them and solve their needs. - Advertising Sheet - This has my logos on it in color and black and white and tells them various ways in which they can use this sheet for their own advertising needs. It also explains clearly about our stage name and the importance to them and us to use the full name instead of just saying a Magician will be there. - Awards and Honors - This is a sheet where I list the awards and honors I have received while performing magic. Now keep in mind that I list these only if they are in a direct relationship to the type of show I am offering. In my case, I list my awards I have won for children's magic as well as the stage awards I have won. This is a way for them to see that I not only have experience with doing family style shows, but I am at the top of my game as well. Do not include awards that have no relationship to what you are offering to your specific market. Those are the main sheets I include in my kit. I also try to include the following that are not directly printed on my stationary but are important in getting my message across to the decision maker. These include: - 8 by 10 photos of me and my wife in performance at various events (in our market) we have worked. Some of the photos are publicity shots or head shots that shows who we are and can be used for advertising. Others are a sheet that has combined images together that shows the direct show we do and the audience interaction and reaction we get from our performances. - An oversized postcard that is a small version of our poster. This is a way for them to see what our show is like and gives them a feel for our presentation. - A business card that is in a slit so that it does not get lost or moved around. - Sometimes I will also include a business card magnet so that they might be able to place this and be able to see my name and contact information on a daily basis. That is pretty much what I include in my promo kit and it has worked quite well for me. I make sure to place the kit inside of an envelope with the letter on top so that the letter is the first thing they see with their name on it. I also make sure the envelope is also done nicely with my logo identity so it all fits together. This is important so that when it gets to their desk, they know exactly who it is from and it does not get tossed away. My envelope is a standard size that an 8.5 by 11 size can fit into without folding. I do this for a reason so that my mailing to them does not get lost with the other mail. It stands out in the mail and they see it clearly. I hope this gives you some insight and help into what I do myself for my own promo kit mailings. If anyone has any questions, issues or concerns, please just let me know or e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would be happy to help you out. British Ring Convention Eastbourne 2006 -------------------------------------------- Message from Bob Hayden PRO to the British Ring British Ring Convention 2006 'It was Magic!' This was the comment of Terry Herbert as this year's Convention of the British Ring of the International Brotherhood of Magicians held in Eastbourne closed. All the performers were superb, the lecturers most generous in the routines presentations and advice they gave, both stage and close-up competitions keenly contested and a Dealers Exhibition catering for everybody's needs. In a word it was a triumph. Acknowledgement for its undoubted success must go to organiser John Pye, who with all the officers of the British Ring and the Ring's Stage and Musical Directors gave months of dedicated work to collate and stage a well-balanced programme of events. Paul Stone must be congratulated on producing two of the best stage shows ever seen at a British Ring Convention and arranging for a whole galaxy of the world's greatest magicians to wow and entertain the 1322 registrants who attended. 1322 came, they saw, they participated and they left Eastbourne on Sunday fully satisfied with what they had witnessed. To name the highlight of the Convention is virtually impossible. There were so many! It comes down to individual choice be it a stage or close-up performer. It was the same with the lectures and workshops. This is not surprising since there were 32 stage acts, 6 close-up workers and 11 lectures/workshops. What a delight it was to hear Michael Close boogie-woogie the ivories so majestically. It is hoped that permission will be given to reproduce the Budget reports on the Shows and Lectures here on the website. What else happened? Mark Raffles with the untiring support of his wife Joan, completed their year as President and President's Lady endearing themselves to everybody not only at the Convention, but also the many that they meet during their journeys around the country. At the conclusion both handed over their Chains of Office to the incoming President John Styles MBE and his Lady, Barbara. The British Ring is proud to have John as its President for the current year. We know throughout his year he will do his utmost to promote the prestige of the British Ring and advance magic as a performing art. At the Annual General Meeting it was proposed and accepted that the President Elect would be Derek MacFaull, the present Chief Welfare officer and Ring Chaplin. Southport was approved as the venue for the 2007 Convention, the dates being the 11th to 16th September. Stage Competition Results British Ring Shield plus £1000 Paul Dabek of Oswestry Runner Up - Theo Speaker Cup plus £500 Joe Ray of Shrewsbury Third Place - Alastair Wand - plus £250 Graham Lee of Sutton Dittia Shield for Manipulation Joe Ray of Shrewsbury Conventioneers Trophy for Originality Graham Lee of Sutton Tom Harris Cup for Comedy Paul Ray of Shrewsbury For the Shield Paul Dabek was a worthy winner giving an action packed magical performance with a projected personality, which reached out to the very back of the Congress Theatre. He has now completed the 'double' having previously been a winner of the Young Magician of the Year of The Magic Circle. A very bright future in the world of entertainment is predicted for this young man. Scooping two prizes was Joe Ray, Grandson to Geoff and Pat Ray former winners themselves of the Shield. Not only did Joe come second in the competition taking The Theo Speaker Cup but also emulating his Grandfather by winning The Dittia Shield for manipulation. Geoff and Pat were so very proud when in addition to Joe's awards it was announced that son Paul was the recipient of the Tom Harris Cup for Comedy. That Friday night was a great time for celebrating for the Ray family. There was another double winner, Graham Lee. With his innovative act of presenting standard magical effects using not the recognized props but balloons. This hilarious act took Graham into third place and The Alastair Wand and won him The conventioneers Trophy for originality. Regretfully there being no lady competitors The Craig Trophy for the best Lady performer could not be awarded. Come on ladies make sure some of you compete next year at Southport and save John Palfreyman having to have the custody of it for the year! It was the first time the organisation of the competition had been undertaken and introduced by Shirley Ray and what a splendid job she made of it bringing in several of her own innovations. She resurrected the practice of many years ago by having the names of each competitor being carried across the stage by a glamorous lady magician and then displayed on a stand. This was enhanced on three occasions by the task being undertaken by Peter Greenwood in drag. So successful was he in this role he is now open for an engagement as Dame in Pantomime. Close-up Competition Results Zina Bennett Cup plus £1000 Marc Oberon of Nottingham Second Prize of £500 Chris Power of London Third Prize of £250 Steve Dela of Newport Shropshire The 'Rovi Trophy' for most skilled entertaining Card magic Steve Dela of Newport Shropshire It came as no surprise that Marc Oberon had won the Zina Bennett Cup. He had given a faultless display using cards, coins and a key routine cumulating with the production of one of jumbo proportions. Chris Power took second place with his laid-back performance of cards and a final production of coins through a diaphanous square. Steve Dala was third with his cups and balls performed to music and intricate card work. For the first time The Rovi Trophy was presented to Steve Dala for exhibiting a high standard of skill with playing cards in an entertaining manner. Organiser Bryan Atherton is to be congratulated in the exemplary manner in which the competition was run. Each year The Craig Trophy is awarded to the dealer presenting the most attractive display, the judging being done by a display manager from one of Eastbourne's Department Stores. This year the Award went to Colin Rose's Five of Hearts Magic Productions. It was very gratifying that many of you remained to see the Stars of the Future Show on Sunday morning. There were excellent performances from all the participants and your appreciation must have given them all a great boost. Thank you for stopping and supporting them. -------------------------------------------- 11. Maria Ibanez has headed the effort to get Magic Week Proclamations from many of the State Governors around the country, and as with everything she does, it has been an outstanding job. We are going to have a great SAM President to succeed Andy Dallas at the end of his term. I have been able to secure the proclamation from the State of Tennessee for the last three years and it gets more difficult each year. Just ask Edinburgh-based Magician and Children's Entertainer Tricky Ricky. Ricky McLeod, known to thousands of children as Tricky Ricky, celebrates his 10th anniversary working at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh. Ricky became a fulltime entertainer in 1996, working in conjunction with charitable organisations Pod (www.podcharity.org.uk) and the Sick Children's Friends Foundation (www.edinburghsickkids.org), who asked him to provide his Magic "n" Fun show on a fortnightly basis at the hospital. With additional sponsorship from Glaxo Smith Kline and Radio Forth, 2006 sees a successful decade of magic at the Sick Kids. "I have a great time there, whether it be a magic show in the ward's playroom, close-up magic at the child's bedside, or gathering some of the teenage patients and having a magic workshop. For parents and carers it gives just a little light relief during their stay in hospital." says award winning Ricky "It's certainly very rewarding, and there have been real moments that have brought a lump to my throat." Due to the overwhelming success of his performances on the wards, Ricky was approached to take his unique brand of magic to the children's hospice Rachel House in Kinross. Appearing once a month, he brings a little magic and mirth - not to mention a lot of mayhem into the lives of families and staff at this very special place. -------------------------------------------- 15. 28th New Zealand International Magicians Convention -------------------------------------------- Hosted by Palmerston North Magic Circle (Inc) Palmerston North, New Zealand. 20th to 23rd October 2006 For the registration html form to print off Go to: http://www.joel.co.nz/convention/reg_form.htm Information on the convention Go to: http://www.watson.co.nz/convention.html The Schedule of events Go to: http://www.joel.co.nz/convention/timetable.htm Convention headliners: David Williamson (USA) Lisa Menna (USA) Duane and Mary Laflin (USA) Joel Howlett (Aus) Alan Martell (UK) If you are planning to attend and have not booked - BOOK NOW - as seats are NOW VERY limited. ----------------- 16. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 126 A Poem Back on page 112, I began the 'Trevor King story', which was beginning to show all the signs of becoming a 'Saga' in it's own right; I did say that I may have bitten off a lot more then I could chew, and that several volumes would probably be needed! I'm finishing Trevor's story with a poem written by him, that he sent to me few years ago. It is not the world's greatest poem but, it relates his memories and sentiments, and that's all that matters! Nostalgic Memories of a Theatre Manager - by Trevor King QSM I remember the 'Tivoli', the heyday of the stars, The Matinee on Saturday, Those crazy 'Keystone Cops' and Cars, And I remember the 'Plaza', the 'Mayfair', The 'Regent', 'State', and 'St James' - Oh wonderful and memorable - The Magic, Their Names. The quiet, the plush, the plaster - the circle and the stalls, The ornamental staircase, the marble entrance halls, (the parrot) The lights that dimmed to darkness - the curtains silent rise, the stars - The hush -ness and breathless stillness, the concentrated eyes. The flickering shaft of whiteness that threw upon the screen, Such images of dreaming as sleep has never seen, The Cowboys on the prairie - the girl whose heart was his - The funny man (YOUR favourite), the villain - "LOOK OUT, THERE HE IS.." It's homeward bound for teatime - we went by tram or train How desperate were their battles, we fought them once again; "Bags I be the hero"; he never missed of course, You always knew which one he was - he rode the whitest horse. The 'Hollywood' at Sumner, the 'Century' at St Albans, The 'Rex' at Riccarton, the 'Metro' at Sydenham, The 'Vogue' at Spreydon - unbreakable in their spell; How strong was the enchantment, how willingly I fell. I can't forget the 'Majestic', the 'Avon', The 'Regent' the 'Grand Crystal Palace', When they were in their prime - All the cinemas - all day long Ah, how sadly I recollect The glories that are gone But I remember the 'Avon', the carpet on the floor, The manager who met you - The ushers at the door, The music from the movies that introduced the show - Ah yes, I remember the 'Avon' but, THAT WAS LONG AGO. Thank you Trevor, for sharing your treasured memories with me. I treasure our friendship, one that has lasted well over 40 years! By the simple expedient of altering Theatre names and places, Trevor's poem conjures past memories of the 'FLICKS' for us all, like the unforgettable sound of 'Jaffa's' rolling down the wooden aisles, or the foot stamping when the screen went unexpectedly dark! Oh, the memories! -------------------------------------------- 17.
