Knock Off Copies Of The Original Professor's Dream Rope ----------------- Message from Kelvin Chun There are many knock off copies of the original PROFESSOR'S DREAM rope being sold. This item was created by Toshio Akanuma, Trix Co., Japan and listed here. http://www.axion-magic.com/~tricks/sita02.htm http://trix-co.com/ You can view the original posted with the "knock off copy" from Europe at the Magic Fakers site: http://www.magicunlimited.com/NewvsOriginal.htm When I questioned one vendor (Hank Lee) about where the Professors Dream rope is from, he mentioned Germany. When I asked about the Japan rope, his follow-up response was: Date: Wed, 18 Jul 2007 05:52:51 -0400 (EDT) From: MagicFact@aol.com To: kyschun@hawaii.edu Subject: Re: Professor's Dream Rope Kelvin, Thanks for the note. We are getting the Professor's Dream from MAK Magic. I would love to carry the original, and not the copy, of course. I really thought that the one form Tricks was not available, as we have not heard from Tricks Co. for years. The only problem is the price. The one from MAK Magic retails for $25.00. The original one sells for $40.00. Is there any way to lower the retail price to compete with the copy? Please let me know. Hank Lee I have developed a new routine with the Japan's original Professor's Dream rope: http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=13596971 This routine includes: 1. Melting knot 2. Separate loop 3. 2 ropes (small and long) - becomes equal length and will join to 1 ultimate rope. 4. Linking ropes 5. 3 ropes (small, medium and long) - becomes equal length and will join to 1 rope 6. Create bigger loops with many Professor's Dream ropes. You can learn the method from visiting the Japan Silk & Magic site: http://www2.hawaii.edu/~kyschun/balloon/supply.html Click on the link or do an internet search for Kelvin Chun, Japan Magic Supplies. It comes in red or white. It includes lecture notes. The "knock off copies" from Europe are not as good in quality and don't include all the tricks. This rope was a popular seller at the national magic conventions: IBM 2007 - Reno and the Society of American Magicians (SAM) 2007 - Dallas. The rope is not as soft and the magnet is not as strong (may deteriorate over time). The Europe versions come from Germany and Hungary (Jupiter Magic). The "knock off" copies have stolen the exact title "Professor's Dream" or "Professor's Supreme" or "Dream Rope" with the same instructions but the rope and magnet is not from Tokyo, Japan. The "knock off" copies will not perform like the original and do not have these new performing ideas. The originals now come in a green cover box. The "knock offs" were distributed from Mak Magic and sold thru Hank Lee and Bob Little. -------------------------------------------- 3. World Record For A Magician Having Lost Luggage! -------------------------------------------- Message from Paul Romhany Hi all, Just returned from 2 weeks working in Norway and Iceland. I think I must hold the world record for a magician having lost luggage in the past six months. Would you believe that the airlines have lost my luggage for the NINTH time!! This means having to rebuild the entire show from scratch. Not an easy task as most of the props are original. The hardest thing to replace and the most expensive is my floating broom ... the only one in the world. It's very very disheartening when you work so hard to accomplish something and somebody else can lose it like this. In most cases with lost luggage they can trace it however this time it seems it is completely lost. Natalie and I are now driving on a 12 day tour across Canada as we have just bought a house in New Brunswick, Canada. We are now booked out with the Chaplin act until the end of 2008 in Europe and I have to try and put together a show to take out end of August. Not an easy task at all. Such is the life of a professional magician ... take the good with the bad and as Carol Roy used to say, "it isn't all glamour"! -------------------------------------------- 4. Levitation Revealed -------------------------------------------- Message from Paul Romhany I came across this really interesting article on yahoo. Might be interesting for the ezine. While they haven't yet found out how to levitate people this might be something somebody can use when 'levitating' other objects. Could provide a good story for magicians. Here it is LONDON (AFP) - Scientists have discovered a ground-breaking way of levitating ultra small objects, which may revolutionise the design of micro-machines, a new report says. Physicists said they can create "incredible levitation effects" by manipulating so-called Casimir force, which normally causes objects to stick together by quantum force. The phenomenon could be used to improve the performances of everyday devices ranging from car airbags to computer chips, say Professor Ulf Leonhardt and Dr Thomas Philbin from Saint Andrews University. Casimir force -- discovered in 1948 and first measured in 1997 --  can be seen in a gecko's ability to stick to a surface with just one toe. Now the British scientists say they can reverse the Casimir force to cause an object to repel rather than attract another in a vacuum. "The Casimir force is the ultimate cause of friction in the nano world, in particular in some micro-electromechanical systems," said Leonhardt, writing in the August issue of New Journal of Physics. "Micro or nano machines could run smoother and with less or no friction at all if one can manipulate the force," he added. And he added: "In order to reduce friction in the nanoworld, turning nature's stickiness into repulsion could be the ultimate remedy. Instead of sticking together, parts of micromachinery would levitate." Leonhardt stressed that the practise is possible only for micro-objects. But he underlined that, although in principle it may one day be possible to levitate humans, that day is a long way off. "At the moment, in practice it is only going to be possible for micro-objects with the current technology, since this quantum force is small and acts only at short ranges," he said. "For now, human levitation remains the subject of cartoons, fairytales and tales of the paranormal." Their research was to be published in the New Journal of Physics. -------------------------------------------- 5. Correction About My Mistakenly Identifying Micro Macro -------------------------------------------- Message from Nick Lewin (US) I want to thank Matt Field for his correction about my mistakenly identifying Micro Macro as being created by Alex Elmsley instead of Bro John Hamman. I am of course very aware of the fact even before I was advised by so many readers. The piece was written in Mumbai airport and emailed to Alan just minutes before I lost my precious internet connection. Writing a weekly column while on the road is a tough business and frankly sometimes there are moments when I can't remember my own name! -------------------------------------------- 6. Remarkable Magic #17 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message from Nick Lewin (US) Remarkable Magic. Dan Hill is a name to remember! With a certain dread I pretended to be excited when my youngest daughter came home and told me about Dan Hill a young comedy magician at her high school. They were both in their freshman year at Green Valley High School and she was going to produce his one-man show as a school fundraiser. I expressed a great deal of interest and inwardly rolled my eyes as I wondered how long it would be before she requested the use of one of the spider infested illusions in our garage. It was a full week-I think the spiders scared her a little. To my amazement I was knocked out at the sheer talent of Dan. Generally speaking high school magicians are rather scary in their lack of judgment in the tricks they perform and especially the jokes they tell. I certainly was! However Dan hit the nail firmly on the head and knocked it out of the park delivering a show that caused me to laugh and cheer with the rest of the crowd. There was no doubt in my mind that this young gentleman could become a top shelf comedy magician without changing one iota of his style and approach. I guess I wasn't the only person to think highly of Dan's abilities as he next accompanied Victor & Diamond to perform at the Bermuda Magic Festival. He is a natural. What is interesting was how he instinctively chose a performing style that fitted him like a glove. It is very easy to try and be somebody else onstage when you are a younger performer but unusual to be confident enough to be yourself. It took me a long time to realize this, Dan had it figured out early on. I have kept in touch with Dan over the years and now at 21 years old he has got the maturity to flesh out the abundant promise he showed earlier. He is a smart kid too and is acquiring an excellent education first at Georgetown University and now at the CUA where he is studying philosophy. You can tell that his heart is still in comedy magic and who knows he might follow that direction but somehow I think he is too smart to do that though and it will be magic's loss. Dan shared a great story with me the other day about how as a really young lad he volunteered to work every day for free with the great John Calvert during a three-week engagement in Florida. On the first performance Dan was in a line of assistants onstage and John went to each of them in turn and secretly requested; "Please put this sanitized ping pong ball in your mouth." They all did as he asked and the routine went swimmingly. At the end of the routine Dan noticed that the balls were placed in a Cool Whip container onstage. The next day when it was time for the routine he noticed that the balls were retrieved from the same container. This was repeated each performance. Sometimes the word sanitized is just a word! However what is a little spit when you get to learn from a master like Calvert. He also survived a daily dose of danger when John, with seriously obscured vision, fired a .22 rifle at a balloon balanced on his head! Maybe this helped lead to his commitment to matters religious. I am sometimes asked about who are the next generation of comedy magicians who are going to replace the Mac Kings, Michael Finneys and Nick Lewins who were forged in the comedy clubs of the 80s. I can honestly put my hand on my heart and point at Dan Hill and know that we are in very safe hands. If you haven't seen Dan perform then do yourself a favor and enjoy his talent. In fact book him on a magic convention or two, as he is the perfect embodiment of what young magicians should strive for. We may even entice him to give up a 'serious' job and become a full time professional. We could use the extra talent! As always send any bricks or bouquets to nicklewin@earthlink.net and check out my website at http://www.NickLewin.com -------------------------------------------- 7. Free Marketing Ideas That Work - By Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message from Kyle Peron (US) Magic4u02@aol.com I use a lot of different methods in order to gain exposure to suspects and to get them to turn into hot prospects that may indeed want and gain from the services that I can provide. Some of these ideas are: - set up a marketing calendar - If you know you will have various ways in which to market for free or at low budget during the year, it will be essential to know exactly when you may want to do that marketing. A marketing calendar is an easy and free way to get and keep yourself on track. - Make a Benefits List: You essentially are not selling just a product or a service. You really are selling benefits that meet the direct needs of the clients you hope to work for. They have needs and you have direct solutions that can solve their needs. These are the benefits your show and your services can have to your client. In other words, how can your features and what you offer directly benefit the client? - Create and use an evaluation form: I have talked about this before a lot so I will not go into too much detail here. It is a great way to never forget your customers after the sale. They can be of so much value to you. Build those relationships. - Communicate Your Identity Effectively: Create and establish your image and identity through not only what you do, how you do it, but also through a consistent brand approach. Use your logo and keep it consistent from piece to piece. Allow your materials to be top notch and a reflection on the quality service you provide. -Create and Use a Web Site: This can and should become your 24/7 open store where anyone at any time can be directed to the site to gain information that sells you and your services effectively. Give them various methods on the site to ask for information. I use a submission form that is easy to fill out and I encourage them to do so. - Do Not Forget the Power of Bartering for Profits: Everyone you deal with has something that they can give you that you can gain something from. Do not be afraid to barter with them in exchange for these goods and services. In the process you not only gain from them, but you can also get a reliable and friendly partner who would not mind referring work your direction. - Keep your Attire Neat: One of the easiest and free means of advertising is the sheer fact of presence. Dress to impress and always keep yourself clean and looking sharp. This can say a lot about you and what you can offer a client. - Track Your Marketing: If you are going to do marketing, then you really need to make sure you track the results of it. Even if it does not bring you a huge Return on Investment (ROI), you can still gain so much from it if you realize that failure is not really failure at all, but a stepping stone to success. If this is the case, then you gain either way. - Hold Contests: At some of my festivals and fairs, my wife and I offer to our clients, to conduct a free coloring page contest where the winners win free magic kits from my own Back of Room Sales (BOR) table. This is easy to do, my cost are low, and what I gain from it is quite extensive. I am now giving the client even more solutions for the event, but I am also gaining a lot of great information and leads from the contest I am holding. I am also getting people excited about the BOR items at my table and directing them over to it. - Respond Quickly - Have easy access to you and your services and be prompt to reply back to any client within 24 hours if not sooner. You really can make or break a gig just from not being prompt to reply. - Encourage and Create a Referral Reward System: Set up a system that rewards and encourages your clients and customers to refer work your way. I talk about this in my thank you letter I give to each client after each show. I then encourage them to refer work my way and I then also reward them for doing so by sending a simple gift their way for any referral they give to me regardless if I book it or not. This encourages them to keep at it. - Use Online Calendars: These are totally 100% free. All you have to do is spend some time doing research online to locate them. Many websites for TVs, Radio and Newspapers as well as community websites have free online calendars where you can freely post your public events. This is a great and free way to get your word out there and show people you are not only working, but give them a chance to see you work. - Use and Send Out Press Releases: There are a lot of great sites that can show anyone how to set up a press release and submit them the proper way. This cost you nothing to do but your own time. However, you can gain some great exposure through using them and not being afraid to send them out. Feature articles in papers and On TV is not unheard of and Kelly and I have gotten many of them over the years for free just because we send out PR's. - Get and Ask for Testimonials: The ability to simply ask is a powerful one. If you feel you did a great job with a client, ask them for a quote of it they would be willing to write you a letter of recommendation. If you ask, most will be willing to do this. These letters can really come in handy for your promotions. - Get Involved in Your Own Community: You can become members of your own chamber of commerce or civic organizations and get involved in the activities they line up each year. This is a great way to network and get your name out there to others who can use you and refer work your direction. - Join and Use Online Forums: Like The Magic Café and others, use forums and get a chance to talk with people. It often is free and a great way to share what you know with others but more importantly to learn from others as well. Ask questions and seek advice. There are a lot more, but I will leave it at this for now. I hope this short list gives you some ideas of what you can and should be doing for free or for very limited budget to really get your name out there and to market effectively. I hope it is of help to some of you. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. John & Tammy Calvert New Address -------------------------------------------- Message from Bev Bergeron (US) I talked to John and Tammy Calvert this past Sunday. They want everyone to know that they are OK and have a new home. It has three bedrooms and a super large basement that can be used to store illusions or just to make into a magic theatre. Both of the famous pair would love to hear from their friends. They can be reached at: John & Tammy Calvert - 1301 Richland Wa -- Bowling Green, KY 42103. They do not have a hard line telephone yet, but expect to have one soon. They will be working the Castle on November 26 to December 2 and will be in Las Vegas on December 3 for a "roast." I don't know if there will be any other food served with the "roast." The pair drove out to Palm Springs, Calif. earlier this year to look at property, but found the weather just too hot for living. Bowling Green is located about half way between Nashville and Cincinnati. John has a daughter living in the area and he grew up in the Cincinnati area 96 years ago. He celebrated his 96th birthday last week and because of his move from Florida to Kentucky he was required to get a new driver's license. The new one is issued until 2012. Think that one over. See you down the Road, Bev Bergeron -------------------------------------------- 9. John Calvert...He's 96 Today -------------------------------------------- Message from Vince Carmen (US) Today, Aug. 5...I just spoke for hours with John Calvert...he's 96 today, very sharp and amazing! He even played his electric organ on the phone from his new home in Bowling Green, Kentucky. John and Tami send their regards to the magic world. -------------------------------------------- 10. News From Sweden -------------------------------------------- Message from Åke Hallberg (Sweden) "A magic wonder workshop with John Carney has been held at Fridhem College in Svalöv, Sweden. Twenty magicians from amateurs to full time professionals had accepted the challenge to learn more about the inner secrets of magic from a very skilled and professional magician and teacher. We who participated were a little confused after the first day, when John had shown only three tricks. Instead his lectures focused on the psychology and philosophy behind a magic performance and the construction of the performance with respect to both routining and presentation. No real news, but the approach to these subjects turned out to be both unique and highly useful. As far as I am concerned it was the best seminar I ever have attended - and the longest. John Carney gets my highest mark! Tuesday night it was our turn to stand for the evening entertainment at the college for an audience of approximately 150 persons. Apart from John Carney, we saw performances by Peder Andersson (who also introduced the show), Stefan Nilsson, David Persson, Seth Engström and Isak Johansson. The show was of the highest quality and inspired generous applause from the audience. Fridhem College is a nice boarding school with cosy rooms, excellent food and good entertainment in the evenings (e.g. stand-up comedy and public reading by authors). We look forward to more magic seminars in the future. Thank you Peder for your efforts!" -------------------------------------------- 11. Don't Let Monkeys At Your Stuff -------------------------------------------- Message from Taradivya Okan I woke suddenly with a start yesterday as my stainless misers dream bucket hit the tiled floor with a resounding crash - there was a large brown monkey in my room, going through my stuff, he grabbed a bag of two pomegranates and charged out the door to sit high up out of reach and eat them while laughing to me. I then found it was magicians wax he had been nibbling. I have a pot made from a beeswax base and it must have smelt of honey - by the time I found ants the size of 1cm and more were carrying off small pieces to take to their nest I guess as building material. So the lesson here is put your wax in screw top tins that a monkey cannot bite through. ITR reels and anything to do with levitation go down very well in a land of yogis... there is the disadvantage that wax can get very soft and surfaces are so often so dirty and dusty that it is difficult to get traction. So I have left most of the wax to the ants as they seem to have more use for it and swapped for a small magnetised bead of haeamatite that I magnetised myself. I look for steel legs, screws in tables, rickshaw mudguards and door hinges. It's great with tissue paper but not always strong enough for a 500 rupee note. -------------------------------------------- 12. British Ring Convention News -------------------------------------------- Message from Bob Hayden PRO to the British Ring The venue for last year's International Close-up Show was not ideal for either performer or spectator and rightly attracted criticism. The convention organisers took note of your concerns and are confident that this year's arrangements will considerably improve the conditions for both and improve your enjoyment of this popular event. It takes place in the intimate Arts Centre Theatre with its tiered seating. And what a spectacular line-up of star performers have been engaged. Here is Mike Gancia's rundown of those appearing. Gaetan Bloom. Is a regular performer at the Crazy Horse Night Club in Paris. He is one of the leading creative minds in magic. His methods are so devious he will fool you badly. His versatility with props other than cards and coins are killer effects guaranteed to entertain.  Lennart Green. A world champion at FISM is no stranger to British conventions. There is no one quite like this magician and gentleman from Sweden. He is truly an original and it shines through with his incredible and skilled performances. He does things with a pack of cards that no one has ever done before. Bill Malone. He has made numerous appearances on national TV in the USA including NBC's 'World's Greatest Magic' and on Paul Daniel's 'Secrets' show. Here is someone who performs for high profile clients and you will see some of the most commercial and powerful magic from one of the funniest magicians on the planet. Michael Vincent. Here is an elegant performer whose superb artistic sleight of hand puts him amongst the tops in the world. As Close Up Magician of the Year of The Magic Circle three times, his sophisticated skilled presentation has brought him professional bookings at celebrity parties, corporate events and international casinos. His desire for perfection has made him a class act. Boris Wild. He is a Frenchman who oozes charm with his romantic 'Kiss act'. In 1996 he became the French Champion of Magic. He has also won awards for his elegant close up magic including FISM and regularly performs on five continents. He has performed more than a hundred times at the Magic Castle so we look forward to his return to a British Ring Convention. Rocco. A student of Slydini for several years he is a winner of the Golden Lion Award in 1986 where he won the stage and close up. In 2006 he won 'The Most Original Act' award at FISM. He is a regular attendee and winner of awards at the FFFF's conventions, and has made numerous appearances at the Magic Castle and Monday Night Magic. He does magic with virtually anything and is probably best known as the creator of the D'Lite effect. It is Mike's opinion that the expertise of this set of close-up performers surpasses that of any other seen at a British Ring International Close-Up Show. You should not miss the chance of seeing six of the worlds most talented and entertaining close-up workers at a single session. For the first time Paul Kieve will be lecturing at a British Ring Convention. Paul is a professional illusionist whose consulting work for both stage and screen has contributed to changing how magical special effects in productions are approached. Paul's career started at the age of 16 by performing magic in a video for Sade's hit 'Your Love is King'. He was runner up in The Young Magician of the Year competition in1985 and turned pro at the age of 17, playing his first season at The Inn On The Park in Jersey as resident support act to performers as diverse as Bob Monkhouse, Ken Dodd, Gloria Gaynor and Bernard Manning. He then formed the double act the Zodiac brothers and toured across the globe for 4 years performing seasons in Japan, Italy the QE2 and the Magic Castle in Hollywood. Since 1991 Paul has concentrated on creating innovative effects for theatre productions starting with The Invisible Man at the Theatre Royal Stratford East which became the first of many West End shows featuring Paul's work including The Lord Of The Rings (currently playing at The Theatre Royal Drury Lane), Alice In Wonderland (English National Ballet at the Coliseum), Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Woman in White, Our House; The Witches Of Eastwick; Angela Carter Cinderella; Scrooge, the Musical (recently at the Palladium starring Tommy Steele), The Witches starring Ruby Wax and Theatre Of Blood starring Jim Broadbent. Paul has also worked on many productions with The Royal National Theatre and The Royal Shakespeare Company and on opera productions at The Royal Opera House, Paris Opera and in Scandinavia and Germany. He has devised illusions for four 'Holidays on Ice' international touring productions: Mystery, Dreams, Hollywood and Celebrations. Work over the Atlantic includes The Lord of the Rings in Toronto, The Woman in White on Broadway, Scrooge USA tour (starring Richard Chamberlain) and Earthsea for Sci Fi channel. He has worked as a consultant to many magicians including David Copperfield's Unseen Forces TV special, Hans Klok's current Las Vegas show and Derren Brown's Trick of the Mind series and 'Séance' special. He advised on and appeared as an on-screen contributor to the BBC History of Magic series. As a consultant to Guinness World Records Paul created magic spreads for the 2005 and 2006 books. In 2005 he became the first magician to perform in The Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. Paul Kieve is the only illusionist to have been connected to the Harry Potter films-as magic consultant to The Prisoner of Azkaban (in which he also appears) and as pre-production consultant on 'Goblets of Fire'. He is private magic tutor to Daniel Radcliffe who has written the following introduction to Paul's forthcoming book 'Hocus Pocus'. 'When I was filming Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban I met Paul Kieve.and he had the same impact on me as the astonishing effects that bring the Harry Potter movies to life. we talked for many hours about magic and.I quickly became obsessed. Paul was always there, not only with an answer but with amazing background knowledge. Step into the pages of Hocus Pocus and prepare to be astonished!' Hocus Pocus will be published by Bloomsbury in October 2007 and is simultaneously being translated into German and Spanish. Scholastic is publishing it in the USA. This is your chance to listen to and learn from this extraordinary genius of theatrical magical effects by being in the Arts Centre Studio either Thursday or Friday afternoon. We are always pleased to welcome our overseas visitors. This year the International President of the International Brotherhood of Magicians Phil Willmarth and his wife Robbie and the President of The Society of American Magicians Maria Ibenez and her husband Jay will be present at Southport. Phil Willmarth is well known to Ringers having had a long association with The Linking Ring beginning in 1978 when he became Assistant Editor/Parade Editor and taking over as Executive Editor and Business Manager in 1992, a position he held until March 2007. During these years Phil worked with and wrote about magicians famous and not so famous from around the world each being treated with the same charm that is synonymous with him. Phil has been impressed how in Britain the Centre for Magical Arts has been successfully created. It is something he would like to emulate in America for the IBM. It is his aim, during his presidency to raise money to build an IBM Conjuring Centre housing the IBM headquarters, a museum, a library and training and research facilities. We wish him well in this ambitious project. How many of you remember Phil when he attended the 1979 Convention in Scarborough? We worked him hard then as he performed in the International Close-up Gala and the Late Late Gala (then The After Banquet Show) and was one of the speakers at the Magic Collectors seminar. No wonder he hasn't returned in the 29 intervening years! Welcome back Phil. Maria Ibenez hails from Havana Cuba, the family moving to America in 1962. She did not fall in love immediately with magic when aged 5 or 6 a magician scared her. This changed when a magician entertained at her son Orlando's first birthday party and she saw what happiness magic could bring. Maria was hooked. She made a very wise decision by joining Ring 45 where experienced members took her under their wing and mentored and guided her while teaching her not just magic tricks, but presentation, history and the psychology of performing as well. For many years Maria has been dedicated to magic organisations. She has served as an officer in several positions in her local Ring, in S.A.M. Assembly 76 and four terms as President of the Florida Magicians Association. In Dallas Texas this year she was given the highest accolade of being installed as President of the Society of American Magicians, the oldest magical society in the world, for the year 2007-2008. Without the devotion and disposition of members like Maria the fraternal spirit of magic could collapse and cease to exist. You will be most welcome at the British Ring Maria and Jay and we are looking forward to meeting both of you. In 2009 FISM is being held in Beijing, China and is being organised by the Chinese Acrobats Association. The association's President Lin Jian and two lady interpreters Li Meina and Yaig Zhaoying are coming to Southport with the prime object of seeing at first hand the organisation and running of a large magic convention. We are sure they will be impressed by what they see and will be able to learn how smoothly it can run. In 2005 the then International IBM President Tony Wilson and his wife Mary were our guests the last time we were in Southport. They are thrilled that they are making the long journey from New Zealand to be with us once again. It will be good to see you again Tony and Mary. Also travelling from archipelago is our own Steve Walker now domicile in Sydney coming with three other Australian magicians. Welcome home Steve! And just in today are two registrations from Tokyo. Charles Gauci US-Canada Workshop/Lecture Tour Oct-Nov. -------------------------------------------- Message from Charles Gauci (Aust) I have received a lot of e-mails asking a number of questions regarding my workshop. The following hopefully will answer a lot of these questions. Some of the commercial effects I have included are Super Magic Square, Super Sudoku, The Diabolical Wallet, Globetrotter, Numerlogie, New Super Memory plus my Marked Deck system including a number of killer effects using it. This is practical commercial material that everyone will use whether you are an amateur or a pro. These are reputation maker effects. You can perform these effects anytime, anywhere. I repeat my offer. If any attendee does not consider that they received value for money I will refund their $100 in full with no questions asked. No ifs or buts, they will get their money back and can still keep the goods. This is not material for mentalists only. This material is for anyone who wants to be able to perform killer impromptu effects at any time, under any conditions. How often have you been asked "Show us a trick" and how often do I hear amateurs reply, "I have not got anything with me" My question is "What sort of a magician are you. Do you think that you will enhance your reputation as a performer when you reply like that?" These are effects that will leave people scratching their heads. They will talk about them for a long time. They will be impressed by your performance if you follow the instructions. The supplied DVD covers 80% of what is taught at the workshop. However, I have deliberately left out some very important information out to protect my investment should anyone copy the DVD. By itself, it will be useless. I have had numerous people contacting me and asking me if I am prepared to sell them the kit for $100 without having to attend the lecture. The answer is no. I could sit at home and make more money doing it this way, but that would be defeating my purpose. This is my swan song. I want to leave a lasting impression. I want you to see the effects being performed live and get firsthand the impact from each effect. Then I know that you will get value for money and that you will perform each effect. Please do not for one moment think that I've got tickets on myself. I know what value for money is, as I have personally attended a number of more expensive workshops than I am charging and have been disappointed. Believe me, there will be a lot of regrets from people who missed out on the workshop. But, that was their choice and if they want to purchase any of the effects then they can pay the full price. Because I have heavily discounted the effects I will accept only cash as far as the entry fee is concerned for the workshop. I will have a number of other effects for sale and I will accept credit cards for these. So far, I have 16 confirmed bookings. If you want further information on my forthcoming tour e-mail me at charlesg@ozemail.com.au -------------------------------------------- 15. James Dimmare Is Canada's Magician Of The Year -------------------------------------------- Message from James Dimmare (US) Kitchener, Ont. (June 16@2pm)---After two decades away, international magic star James Dimmare returned to Canada today to be acclaimed by his peers as Canadian Magician of the Year. The presentation was made this afternoon at the convention of the Canadian Association of Magicians (CAM) in Kitchener, Ont, Dimmare, recognized for his debonair style, was born and raised in Vancouver, BC, and inspired by the TV specials of the late Doug Henning, a 70s superstar of stage and television. Dimmare developed his skills as a teenager and left for Hollywood where he was continually motivated by the legendary American magician Channing Pollock. Like Pollock, Dimmare has become famous for his elegant dove magic. He is also a spectacular illusionist who bears a striking likeness to the legendary musical movie star Fred Astaire. Dimmare even taps into movie-going nostalgia with his promotional line, 'The Style of Astaire and the Cool of Sinatra.' It has worked well for him as he as he circles the world performing in the top nightclubs, casino showrooms and variety theatres of Asia and Europe. Next month he takes his Las Vegas Magic revue to The Prince Hotel in Tokyo for the summer season. www.wwwww.co.jp/lvm07-a In presenting the award, CAM president Joan Caesar said, "This year the award goes to James Dimmare--an internationally recognized award-winning magician with credits as entertainer, producer, director, designer and lecturer. At the moment, he is rehearsing his show for Japan in Las Vegas and came here from that show to perform at the gala tonight." ----------------- 16. Tony Wilson Magic Adventures No 5 ----------------- Message from Tony Wilson (NZ) From Miami we flew to London and arrived safely but our two suitcases didn't. Luckily they were couriered 24 hours later so I could attend The Magic Circle in my tie and jacket. Summer school was in session and I enjoyed the input on thumb tip magic along with 50 plus other members. It was also good to catch up with magical friends and to see changes made since I was last there in The Magic Circle Centenary in 2005. We sailed from Harwich on July 24 on a 13 day Baltic Sea Cruise. The entertainment offered each night was first class. Even after 50 years in magic I still enjoy watching top class visual entertainment acts as we can all learn from watching other professionals at work. One professional magician we did meet however was our close friend Paul Romhany who was in Oslo, Norway the day we arrived and as pre arranged we spent the day with him before he boarded the ship next to ours for a few days work on the high seas, with his Charlie Chaplin magic act. Great to catch up with you Paul! ----------------- 19. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 9 'Krait' Here's a more in-depth analysis of this famous but little known former Japanese fishing boat. A robust little vessel - 70 feet (of teak planking) long, 11 foot Beam and a copper-sheathed hull - with a range of 11,000 miles and a top speed of 6.5 knots; she begun her life as the 'Kofuku Maru'. Before WWII she operated from Singapore in the abundant fishing grounds off the Malay and Dutch East Indies Coast. When the war in the Pacific broke out in late 1941, the Kofuku Maru was seized by the British Government in Singapore and interned. A few weeks before the rapidly advancing Japanese Army occupied the colony early in 1942, command of the vessel was bestowed upon Bill Reynolds, an Australian who had lived in Malaya and knew the local waters extremely well. Reynolds sailed the Kofuku Maru to the Rhio Archipelago, where she was put to work as a ferry to evacuate the hordes of refugees fleeing before the Japanese, down the Malay Peninsular. Apart from acting as a human ferry, she also doubled as a guide ship for all the smaller boats trying to cross the Straits of Malacca. The Kofuku Maru - more than likely, was the only Japanese vessel to be commanded by an Australian during WWII. She carried out her duties brilliantly - under the very noses of the advancing Japanese. Finally it was time for Bill and his new vessel to flee also. Strafed by Japanese fighters she ran the gauntlet of the Malacca Straits and disappeared into the vast Indian Ocean. At last the Australian sized Japanese fishing boat made it to Ceylon, a little battered but still sea worthy. From there she was sent on to Bombay, India. A name change was now in order so whilst at Bombay she was given a new name - Krait, which would forever become part of Australian Naval history. Aptly named, for Krait is the name of a tiny but highly venomous snake found on the Indian subcontinent. Very appropriate, for like the reptile she was named after, Krait was able to strike swiftly and surely before her victim(s) realized she was there. She had originally been sailed to India from Singapore, after its fall to the Japanese, where she was commandeered by Military Intelligence for 'Possible Future Use'. At this point of time in India, a plan to hit back at the all-conquering Japanese was being hatched. This plan included striking at Japanese shipping at the now occupied island of Singapore. Being Japanese built and of a type very common in the waters around the former British Colony, krait seemed the perfect choice to infiltrate enemy lines. As for the approaches to Singapore via Ceylon or India were heavily patrolled by the Japanese, the best starting point for such an operation was Australia. So it was that Bill Reynolds was ordered to sail Krait on the long and dangerous journey across the Indian Ocean to Fremantle in Western Australia. 'OPERATION JAYWICK' This was a seemingly suicidal plot to destroy Japanese shipping in Singapore Harbour, and was one of the most daring raids of World WarII. September 1943 - ten Australian and four British servicemen struck at the heart of the Japanese supply line to New Guinea. The heroes of 'Jaywick' travelled 5,000 miles through enemy infested waters to sink Japanese shipping, and destroy the Japanese's confidence and moral. This is the story of the 'Guts' and determination of Australian 'Diggers' and Sailors (as well as the British, among many other nationalities), striking an extraordinary blow against the Japanese during the bitter hostilities. Departing from Exmouth in Western Australia, Krait, laden with weapons, limpet mines and rubber canoes, headed north toward the Lombok Strait in the extremely dangerous and occupied waters around Surabaja (Surabaya), Java (Indonesia). She was sailed to within 21 miles of the 'Singapore Roads' where the canoes were loaded with rations and water for one week plus operational stores and weapons. The canoe borne raiders arranged their rendezvous with Krait for the night of October 1st at Pompong, 28 miles from the advanced operational post, for which Dongas, eight miles from Singapore Harbour, had been selected.
