He Has Stolen My Name -------------------------------------------- Message from Ozlen Tuncer aka Dr.Tora (Turkey) He has stolen my name, his name is Tura and his real name is Hossein Aminipour from Iran. Hossein copies the magic goods from many famous magic companies and sells them. What is interesting is that even the people who knows that they are fake, do buy them. The quality is not the same but the prices are always at a fraction of the original. It all began in the year 2000. A friend from Istanbul told me that there is an Iranian guy who sells cheap magic items and his name is TURA. They also said that he had just began to use TORA sometimes but luckily his prospectuses indicated that his and his company's name was TURA and TURA ARTISTIC COMPANY. I did not pay attention at first. But afterwards he began to sell magic items on a large scale and even he used to sell them in many different cities. As he came to sell some items to IZMIR - to the city where I live, I have told him in a friendly to me about the situation. He did not say anything as his English is not so good. I thought he understood. But he did not!!! His original stage name was TURA but after I became a little bit more known, he preferred to change his name to TORA. First he copied all the magic apparatus without paying a cent for the loyalties... Then he has stolen my name. I have seen him a couple of times and warned him about the case... He did not pay attention. He copies EVERYTHING such as the floating table of Losander and sells it under 100 dollars whereas the original costs many times of that amount. I have received many protests about it as people thought that I was him. And I had told the people that I was not the same person. Many of them did not believe me. He even dared to attend International Events as well and I already know that he has become an IBM member. His real name is Hossein Aminipour. And what is very interesting he is attending the FISM as a dealer. Everybody will think that I am the owner of that "COPY FACTORY" and they will think negative about me.. I do not want to face this problem as I am usually on international platforms like FISM or Balkanian Magic Convention etc.. In fact the problem must be solved permanently... I wonder if anything can be done for the matter. Can somebody do something totally unethical at the heart of the Magic-FISM, where all the top authorities are there? Yes he can!!! He did it both in FISM 2003 and in FISM 2006.. Even I clearly remember that in the FISM 2003, Amos Levkovitch has seen him selling the copy of his "Comedy Dove Vanish" and got very angry. Can anybody stop him for this immoral case, both copying the goods and selling them as if they are your inventions and using someone else's name as if it is his? I have some newspapers as the proof that I was TORA long earlier than him. It was late 1983 and early 1984 that I began using TORA as my stage name. I have some his prospectuses that he was still TURA when he came to Turkey to sell goods... -------------------------------------------- 3. Phone Jack -------------------------------------------- Message from Amos Levkovitch There is a new invaluable service for magicians. "Phone Jack" is a consultation session with the legendary Jack Goldfinger from the fame "Goldfinger and Dove". Magicians can call and get professional advice on all topics on the art of magic. From guidance to building a new act or discussing how to improve their present act to guidance on their career, and anything in between. Jack Goldfinger will speak with them in person and they can not even imagine how their act will improve after a session with the master. Many magicians have tried it and have become regulars on this incredible service. The first three minutes are free. Magicians can check it out at www.GoldfingerAndDove.com and click on "Live Personal Consultation". Hoping to see you there - Keep a dream in the making -------------------------------------------- 6. Remarkable Magic #31 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message from Nick Lewin (US) Remarkable Magic. Levent - a remarkable teacher. One of the problems with a really great gig is that you never see your counterparts who are working the same gig. I began working for Royal Caribbean Cruise Line in 1980 and for many years I have heard people sing the praises of comedy magician Levent. I saw him perform a short set on a magic cruise in 1991 that I really enjoyed and with luck I will get to see his full show one day. As longer time readers of this column will know I have confessed to having obsessions with certain tricks. One such trick is the salt pour and anyone who saw the great Fred Kapps perform the trick will know why. I have about six gimmicks in my possession while never actually having performed the trick in public. I keep working at it just for my love of the effect. I saw an Internet ad for Levent's long pour gimmick and decided I would invest the very modest sum it involved. I am very glad I did. I am one of those comedy magicians who often confuse the magic world. I really understand and love magic as an art and get enormous pleasure in my knowledge of both the history and performance of comedy magic. I am always astounded how many magicians assume that comedy magicians chose this field because it is easy. It isn't. It is only easy to be a bad comedy magician. When I received my salt pour gimmick it was accompanied by a modest looking DVD. Looks be damned that DVD contained a history of the trick and Cliff notes of the best features of the best routines that have been featured over the years. Oh, it also taught Levent's own routine in detail. This routine shows the development Levent's routine has made over the years and how his careful attention to detail has polished it into a 100% surefire commercial routine. As a long time, full time working pro it was a delight to be gifted with so many useful and rewarding details. It reminded me of the way Ken Brooke used to labor at his instructions to make each one a roadmap to a commercial routine. However Levent's routine was on DVD making it easy to absorb and learn from. To say I was pleased is an understatement. I immediately sent for Levent's routine and handling for the Potassy-Wave Deck. Along with a perfectly made deck was a DVD containing a superb routine and the same detailed history of the innovations involved with the basic trick. Some of the tiniest details are the best. Every magician should watch this DVD just to see how to prepare a deck of cards so it can be used effectively. To cap it all was a visual gag to close the routine that is as close to perfect as a performer can ever expect to receive. Trust me. I wanted to take the opportunity this column gives me to let everyone know that somebody out there is really doing it right. There are very few top-notch performers who are willing to share their knowledge and experience in this manner. I sound like a stockholder in the company but I'm not, I am just very excited to find someone offering more than just a prop but a tour through their mind. Take my word for it every word and action is so well worked out that it will allow you to get on with the next stage making it your own. The Art of Performance - Empowering your Helpers: By Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message from Kyle Peron (US) Magic4u02@aol.com Ever perform a show and when it's that time to find a volunteer it almost seems like your audience goes into terror mode? The audience starts to slump in their chairs, look the other way or raise someone else's hand instead of their own. They do anything they can to make sure it is not them who get selected to come up and help. I feel there is a simple reason behind why this happens. Many people just hate being picked by a magician. Why is this? Why are people afraid to help a magician. I do not feel it is so much the fact that they are brought into the limelight as it is this fear that they are going to be made to look like a fool on stage in front of everyone. Perhaps this fear of embarrassment prevents them from wanting to assist us. How can we change this perception that what we do is embarrass the people we bring up on stage? How we can empower our helpers instead of always causing the laughs to be pointed at the person we select to assist? The first step is always remembering that every person that you bring up to help you should be treated like a guest in your own home. Treat and show them the same respect you would want to receive from them. If you remember this simple idea, you can be sure to change your mannerisms in regards to how you talk and greet and react with them on stage. Second, understand that they are nervous to begin with. They are not used to being in front of everyone or in the limelight and they may have friends or family watching them. This nervous feeling is normal for them. Where as we are comfortable on stage, they are not. Be aware of this and tune into it. You can learn to relax the person by giving them a round of applause as they come up, shaking their hand when they get there and thanking them periodically through out the routine. You can also whisper something to them at times during the routine if you need to. This just something that is heard between you the performer and your helper that can show your appreciation. Third, realize that it is ok to get laughs from your helpers but make sure they realize if you do so, that you are teasing and you appreciate their help and being a good sport. It is important that they trust you and understand you first and the laughs you are getting are not always pointed and aimed directly at the person or child. Fourth, do not fall victim of forgetting that your helper is human just like you are. They share the same emotions and breathe the same air. We as magicians tend to forget that the person we have helping us is even there at all. We have done the effect so many times that the person stops being a person and becomes a prop that we manipulate like other props on the stage. Fifth, your audience is EVERYTHING. Without an audience, a magician is an awfully lonely person. Remember that you are not there performing for yourself. You have to enjoy what you do, but the real reason you are there is to entertain the audience that has come to watch your performance. They want to have fun and a good time. You can make that happen for them. And lastly, you do not always have to get the laugh by embarrassing the helper. You can just as easily get a great laugh or reaction from an audience by turning the sucker trick on yourself. Instead of the wand breaking in the child's hand, it works fine for him but does not work for you. They seem to be able to restore the paper napkin where as yours falls apart in pieces. By doing so you still get the laugh, but you are making the helper feel good and feel important. In a sense you start to empower the helper. This not only benefits them but will benefit you as well. Your shows will run smoother and you send a positive message to the entire audience and your client. You also will see that your audience is more willing to want to come up and assist instead of dreading to raise their hands. We must also realize that as magicians, many of the audience members we perform for are seeing a live magician for the very first time. We are the ones setting the example for how they may view magic and magicians in general. If this is the case, then we should be conscious of this and work towards giving those audience members a positive feeling towards the entire magical experience. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. Entertaining On The Ocean #10 - Paul Romhany -------------------------------------------- Message from Paul Romhany (NZ) What an incredible two weeks Natalie and I have had. We just got off the ship where our cabin was only five foot by eight foot and the stage, actually a dance floor, was completely surrounded with people on every side and above me. While we were on there an email came in for another job, this time it was for a 'charter cruise' on one of the largest ships out there. We left one ship at 10am and arrived to join the other sip at 5.45am the next day, traveling and flying all day and night. We were only booked on there for 2 days but I didn't except to be on the first night, surprise No. 1. Not only that, but the entire cruise was booked out by Thailand Amway and when we arrived we were told that nobody spoke any English so my show tonight had to be ALL silent material . Surprise No. 2! In my full evening show I perform 15 minutes of stand-up comedy then put my make-up on in front of the audience, so this all had to be taken out. I ended up spending the rest of the day working on new material for my show which included adding music and rehearsing new pieces. Some of these I had thought about but was forced to do them! To my great surprise it actually went very well and the comments from the cruise director and other acts was very rewarding. The good thing is that I now am able to extend my Chaplin show and have a full 45 minute show with NO speaking in it. The one good thing about this gig is that we ended up with a huge suite on the ship so were able to sleep the entire next day! LESSON: ALWAYS BE PREPARED FOR ANYTHING. This weeks story comes from a very well known magician Carl Andrews. Carl and I first met while on different ships in Bermuda and I've been a huge fan of his work for many years. Be sure of check out his website for many of his amazing products. From Carl Andrews: Well everyone thinks all this travel is so glamorous but then they have never been stranded in an airport in a foreign country. I have had it happen a few times. The last time I was in Turkey and got to the airport where I had to take a short flight from Izmir to Istanbul and then on to JFK. Well when I got to Istanbul I had to pick up my luggage and check it back in. I looked at the departure flights board I did not see my flight listed, I knew this could not be a good sign. I went to one end of the airport where I thought my connecting airline was located but they did not have me listed and said it must be a partner airline at the other end of the terminal so I head down there with my luggage and this is a very large airport. When I get to the next desk they don't have a flight with the number I have been sent by the cruise line travel department so now I am thinking I am stuck without a ticket in Istanbul on a Sunday. I show them my confirmation number and they find I am booked with another airline back at the other end of the terminal. Finally after 2 ½ hours I am checked in, it was a good thing I had 4 hours between flights but I have learned to stay calm and not get stressed at airports and things have always worked out but this time somehow the cruise travel department gave me all the wrong information and thank God I had time to sort it all out. -------------------------------------------- 9. Chuck Jones - I'm Not Retiring ----------------- Message from Chuck Jones (US) I'm not retiring from magic or performing! Lately I've been getting emails saying "Sorry to learn you're retiring! Best wishes in your retirement!" Many of you know I've toured in Australia and New Zealand for the past 20 years. This rumor of retirement here has apparently started because I did not appear in the show last year and am doing a limited role this year. Additionally, the promoter may have told some that the reason is that I am retiring. The truth is, in a budget saving craze, the producer has turned to local talent rather than flying in my show--cargo and personnel-- from the US. Not only am I not retiring, the best is yet to come! I am still designing and building new illusions for my show. Last year I designed a new "Bump In the Night" with a unique theme and a fantastic new method. And, ready for early 2008, another new illusion which offers a completely different direction from anything I've done previously. And I still continue to offer my custom built Squeeze Play, and several other illusions, for sale. So as they say, "You ain't seen nothing yet!" And I'll be performing for a few more years yet to be sure. ---------------- 11. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 26 As I mentioned earlier, we were performing our show from the floor, as the tin shack/community centre didn't have the luxury of a stage or platform. This also meant that everybody was sitting, crammed, on the floor, and they were damn close - a rather tricky situation when it came to the fire eating segment of the show. During my fire act, I had two knee high stands in front of me, each had a bowl attached on top - one contained the fuel that I used to soak my torch heads in; the other - the cauldron as it were, contained sealed in - fuel-soaked cotton wool, which burned away for the duration of the fire-eating performance. Just before we started our Fakir routine, Ibraham and Marilla, who had calmed down somewhat after the laughter and the, "We can see the white girl's." incident, came out and parked themselves nearby to watch our act. The very friendly inhabitants of these remote pacific islands - adults, and children alike, become very excited and overly exuberant during 'special' occasions such as this, as Marilla and Ibraham had discovered. Consequently, I should not have been too surprised when a 'Big Buck Native' - sporting a massive head of gleaming hair, and a huge grin that seemed to spread from one side of the room to the other - wandered up in the middle of the fire act. Bending down, he picked up the cauldron stand and started waving it all over the place, not caring a hoot about the colossal, fiery 'volcano' that was spouting forth in great abundance from the bowl - thank God, the roaring, blazing mass of fuel-soaked cotton wool couldn't fall out! My fire routine, in fact the entire Fakir act, was choreographed and split-second timed to special, exotic style music for the whole 22 minutes of the performance; it totally went to 'pot' when this happy-go-lucky nutcase decided to stick his oar in. One of my fire torches, the 'Monster' I called it, had an enormous head on it, which I could only just cram into my mouth - and keep it burning. I deliberately made it so because, 1 it produced one hell of a large, extremely hot flame. 2, I used it not only for a special segment in the act, but also to quickly run around the audience to let them feel the incredible heat that came off it, and to convince sceptics that the fire was real. You would not believe the number of people who would come up after shows, wanting to know how I managed to make 'Plastic Fire' - whatever the hell that is - look so real! 3 It sure as hell convinced hard-bitten newspaper reporters that I was the 'Real Deal', and the occasional fire-eater who would make their way back stage to 'show' me what they could do. They quickly had second thoughts when I fired up the super-heated 'Monster'! Grabbing the 'monster', and firing it up with a match (he had my fire bowl) I headed towards the crazy, full of beans, galoot, hoping that upon seeing me, and the flaming fire torch bearing down on him, he would calm down and hand me the cauldron, no such luck! Then it happened! He slipped! On his way down, his immense head of hair made contact with the monster. WHOOSH! Up Went His Hair! As I seized the stand, two things happened simultaneously; the whole place broke-up into a pandemonium of laughter, and the people in the immediate vicinity - all laughing in crazed delight, as was the fellow with his hair on fire - started patting his hair out. I discovered later that the gleam in his massive locks was the result of coconut oil, lots of it, which all the islanders use in their hair. No wonder his hair fired up like one of my torches! Amazingly, he was the first to shake my hand, later. Not only were the audience screaming with laughter, Ibraham, and in particular Marilla, were rolling about in hysterics as well. To them, the hapless chap's predicament went a long way towards a feeling of 'Sweet Revenge', for their earlier embarrassment. For a fleeting moment I thought that I could well have initiated an old tradition, and wound up in a cooking pot - until I heard the laughter. Luckily, Veronica had the foresight to stop the tape recorder, so I was able to carry on with the rest of the show to my music. I can well imagine that under other circumstances, I could have been facing a lawsuit, but then again, if some idiot were interfering with my act during a dangerous, to me, segment, I would be the one doing the suing!
