Jeff & Abbi McBride Magical Adventures ----------------- Message from Jeff & Abbi McBride (US) Greetings All, Jeff, Abbi, Eugene, Tobias, and Bryce all wishing you a Magical New Year! Jeff's new favorite inspirational quote! We would like you to start 2008 with this following thought from explorer W. H. Murray. It is our hope that it will inspire you to achieve your magical dreams. "Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, the providence moves too. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favor all manner of unforeseen incidents, meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamt would have come his way. I learned a deep respect for one of Goethe's couplets: Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it!" This is by far one of our favorite inspirational thoughts. I printed it out and posted it next to my computer, so I can see it every day and to remind me of my magical quest. I hope you refer to it and that it gives you hope, courage and inspiration! Television Magic In Asia Next week, we are off to China for a corporate date, with our big illusion show. Something that can drop single coins from a stack that can be controlled by a small remote. This device could be attached to a coin pail or sit on top of a glass and create the auditory illusion of coins being produced and invisibly thrown from a short distance away from the receptacle. I have read about "Flight Deck" but don't think the principle (magnetic coins) is right. Also... I am looking for a "Urania" or hinged half shell for a set of 1.75" Multiplying Billiard Balls. These are known among European Magicians (Richard Ross described it in "Greater Magic" DVD Vol 26) but no-one seems to know of them around here or in the usual US stores. If you can help please e-mail me at: elmsley@operamail.com -------------------------------------------- 4. Blaney's Lighted Sword Cabinet...The Great Escape -------------------------------------------- Message from Walter Blaney (US) Dear friends in magic: Just a note to say by special arrangement my Lighted Sword Cabinet (The Great Escape) is now being built and marketed by Wellington Enterprises. Bill Schmeelk is one of the top expert craftsmen in magic illusion building. He actually built the very first one for me back in 1980, and I am still using it these past 27 years. The base is half the thickness of the old Sword Cabinet. And the see-through windows in each wall with the flashing lights outside make it a whole new illusion. The description and action video can be seen both on Bill's website at www.Wellingtonent.com and on my illusion website www.walterblaney.com/illusions For trade show magicians especially please read the many reasons The Great Escape is one of the best illusions ever to close your act with, surrounded by your audience and up extremely close. Cheers from Texas, Walter Zaney Blaney ----------------- 5. Review: Swedish Magicians - 1.165 Mini-Biographies ----------------- Message from Mats G. Kjellstrom (Sweden) In the Magic Circular - the magazine for The Magic Circle - January 2008 you can find a review by Eddie Dawes - "Sveriges trollkarlar": "This volume, titled Sveriges Trollkarlar (Swedish Magicians) is a remarkable compilation of mini-biographies of 1.165 Swedish magicians and is illustrated with photographs of some 500 of them. Their magical society affiliations are recorded totaling almost forty different clubs amongst which are The Magic Circle and the IBM. The entries vary in length and include many familiar names from the past and present such as Baron Seeman, Balabrega (who was killed by an explosion on stage in Brazil), Nate Leipzig, Brazil Jack, Bob Arno, Topper Martyn, El Duco, Lennart Green, Johnny Lonn, Joe Labero, John Houdi and Tornedo. Some seventeen entries are of female performers. There are surprises too - film star Ingrid Bergman warrants an inclusion by virtue of her appearance as a magicienne at the Cirque d´Hiver in Paris in 1957, and there is an act that was called ´The Goodlooking Brothers´, although there isn´t a photo to prove or disprove the accuracy of their title! We find too that compiler Christer Nilsson is actually Christer el Ricco. The text is entirely in Swedish, which presents a problem for those of us unfamiliar with the language, but for the historian of magic this record of Swedish practitioners of the art is a valuable one and we are commending the author for his excellent compilation. Overall the book is nicely produced with the text in double column format." ISBN 10: 9163305291 Online shop: http://www.bokus.com -------------------------------------------- 6. Remarkable Magic #36 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message from Nick Lewin (US) Remarkable Magic. Ken Noyle a master showman. There weren't many of us magicians who worked at Milt Larsen's 'Mayfair Music Hall' in Santa Monica. I was one of the lucky ones. My act was fairly pure English music hall as filtered through the talents of Ken Brooke; plus I had a true Brit accent. That allowed me to join in on the fun. Working at the 'Mayfair' allowed you to mix with a whole different era of performers. There were Tap Dancers, Spoon Players, Quick Change Artists and even a regurgitator named Chas who ate his own shirt, boutonniere and cigar. Fortunately the audience had no idea that he was a regurgitator but they weren't standing in the wings near the pail when he left the stage before taking his final bow. One of the magicians I did meet when he was working at the 'Mayfair' was a talented shaven headed performer called Ken Noyle. Ken was a great showman who could take anything and make it play twice as big as you would ever believe possible. I am not joking; he closed his act to a standing ovation with the split deck routine. Ken had two illusions in his show and both of them had more impact than a certain Vegas performer can achieve with a whole stage full of custom made props. Ken had a 'tip-over' trunk made in the shape of a top hat from which he produced his lovely Japanese wife Yoko dressed in a 'bunny' outfit. He also had a box that Yoko entered and was penetrated with wooden poles. Well, that describes it in magical terms but he turned it into a hysterical routine with a drop-dead surprise at the end. Oh, he also had a large python called Monty. I don't remember what he did with the snake but the crowd loved it! Ken and I got to know each other and I was amazed at what a nest of Chinese boxes this man was. He was the published author of several volumes of Zen poetry and a superb novel "Diary of a Geisha." Ken was also a black belt in the martial arts and a gourmet chef. To my mind even more impressive was the fact he is the only human I have ever known who could sit in a casino coffee shop and win game after game after game of Keno. How he did it was uncanny, slightly supernatural and one of those great mysteries like the Bermuda Triangle and why anyone thinks Dane Cook is funny. When performing on cruise ships Ken would have a sunrise session on deck teaching people martial arts movements and still have the energy left for special Midnight Magic Specials. He had so much energy and was so buff that with his shaven head the audience might well have thought they were watching television's Mr. Clean in a commercial transforming a bathroom. Billy McComb always insisted that he had first met Ken in Ireland when he was a teenager and that Noyle was a little bit older than him. He said that Ken had taught him a really neat three to one rope routine. It was always very difficult for me to believe that Ken was older than Billy, however Billy very vigorously stuck to the idea. In fact there was more than a little of the 'Dorian Gray' in Billy's notion that any aging on his part was largely due to the inconsideration of Ken in refusing to age. I haven't seen Ken Noyle in many years now and would love to know what he is doing. In my minds-eye I see him as energetic as ever making audiences give him a standing O for a trick most people throw away. Marketing Your Magic: Lead Generation - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message from Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com In the process of finding your own success, the first step is always recognizing that you must get up off the couch and take direct action yourself to seek it. It is about setting long and short term goals every year and checking up on your progress often. Assuming you have done that, the next step that I often take is maintaining and finding new leads for the markets that my wife and I work. You cannot market effectively unless you have leads to market to. So how do you find leads and establish leads? How can you create systems that work for you so that lead generation becomes a habit for you? Well, I would like to list a few of my own secrets that I use and have made habit for coming up with leads every day and all year around. For my wife and I, coming up with new leads and keeping track of them is an important step in the process we go through for the different markets we work each year. - One of my biggest tips is to start what my wife and I call a "Leads Binder or Database". This is a binder or online ACT database that is mainly used for anytime a new lead is spotted. I use a binder mainly and I have it set up by month and then by week. Each month has a tab on it so I can turn to that month easily. Each section is then set up according to date. This way I can find a lead for any month and any date that I might be trying to target. Whenever we see or find a lead, we gather all information that we can and it gets placed into a plastic sleeve that then gets placed into the binder according to that month and date. The idea behind the month and date is that if I have or see an opening in our calendar, I can immediately go to that section of our leads binder and find a lot of different potential suspects and leads to do a mailing to. It helps me to keep it all organized. Now how do we find leads? Let me give some ides we have put into place. - We are trained to always keep our eyes out for any poster or sign as we are driving to work or about town. Because one of our target markets is festivals and fairs, we always see signs and banners around. What we now do is have camera phones and we take pictures of these signs and banners as we pass them. This information can then be downloaded and recorded when we get home and entered into the leads binder. There is simply a wealth of information out there that you pass every day and may not even be aware of it. Daycare centers, malls, schools, theaters etc. are all things you pass every single day that could be directly related to the market you work. Get in the habit of spotting these and keeping track of them. Use them as new leads. - Every Thursday we get the local papers from a lot of different areas in our performance area. We get these as many have a weekend section in the paper. This is a gold mine for potential leads that are perfect for us as we deal a lot in family crowds and shows. Many of these have sections in them for family events and things to do during the weekend etc. This is a wonderful way to acquire a lot of new leads. - The Internet is also a wonderful tool for finding leads if you just have some patience. I have my favorites categorized and sites saved under different categories such as cub pack sites, festival sites, chambers of commerce sites, parks and recreation sites etc. This way they are categorized and always available and at my fingertips when I need the information for new leads. A little bit of research using search engines like Google.com and others, will land you a lot of great and useful sites you can use for lead generation. - I also use my past clients as lead generators through a referral reward program. I always give them a thank you kit after every performance and part of that kit talks about referrals and encourages them to do so. We have received many leads simply by remembering NEVER to forget your past client and always staying in touch with them. - Business cards. I always have them with me and on me and in every location and every car. It just becomes habit for me to have them and to use them. Having cards does you no good sitting in your box. You must be willing to not only give them out, but be active enough to get cards in return. There are a lot of other tips, but I will leave it at this for now. I know some of these may not be unusual, but they are some of the things that have really worked wonderfully for my wife and I and the system we set into place. I hope they may be of help to you as you start to create ways to keep your lead generation ongoing year round. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. Entertaining On The Ocean #15 - Paul Romhany -------------------------------------------- Message from Paul Romhany (NZ) It Ain't All Glamor What a week it's been one extreme to the other. We are currently based out of the UK while we tour Europe thinking it would make life easier to travel. However we are still doing 17 hour travel days! Recently we had to get off a ship and travel from Italy (Livorno) to Rhodes (Greece). 17 hours later at 2am we made it to our hotel. One of the many things you have to get used to when working on ships are the hectic schedules. Sometimes they really get to you and you can easily lose your mind. We left at 9am to get our flights, having to change 3 planes, however when getting to Athens at 6pm we were told our flight was cancelled. So many hours later at midnight we finally get on a flight to Rhodes. based out of the UK doesn't help either as we have to get up early, travel 2 hours to get to Heathrow in time to get our flights, then spend hours traveling making up 12 - 14 hour travel days. The ship we just got off was the Brilliance of the Seas (Royal Carribean) and it was a wonderful experience as we were on with the amazing illusion duo Matt and Mystia Fallon. It is very rare to be on with another magic act but it was great chance to catch up. They are doing really well and booked out now until 2009!! An amazing double act. We got to see Matt perform his close up show and he really killed. Two of the nicest people in the business. The ship we are on now has to be the worst we've experienced in 8 years. No names of this cruise line but the cabin is 5 feet by 12 feet! I had to complain as we can't even put our bags in our room it's that small! There is no theatre on this ship, it's very cabaret with people above me and all sides. It feels like I've gone back 30 years. The ship is over 40 years old. My agent has had a long email about this one. It's one of those jobs that came in at the last minute and we took it because we are on the road, but sometimes for your own sake you realise perhaps you should have not taken it. As they say, the show must go on ... We leave here in a week then back on the Brilliance which we love, this time for a charter cruise which means someone has booked the entire ship so it will be quite a different type of cruise. We have gone from one extreme to the other, the lesson here is that you have to be very adaptable and be able to work pretty much under any and every condition. Every ship is different, most are amazing and when you get one like we are on now (no names!) it makes you really appreciate a ship like the Brilliance. Virginia Apperson said; "As it stands right now we have just over 1500 people registered for the Magic Convention of the Century." The Combined Convention will be held in Louisville, Kentucky with the Galt House Hotel being the headquarters for the six-day event. Galt House Hotel officials announced today that the hotel is now 85% booked for the I.B.M. S.A.M. 2008 Combined Convention. As of today there are approximately 140 rooms left in the contract for the week. Those who have not made hotel reservations are urged to do so promptly. It has also been reported that a few people have been unsuccessful in obtaining the kind of room reservation they would like. The convention room block is based on Sunday night July 20 through Saturday night July 26, with room's pre and post convention being sold on a "space available" basis. Those who are planning to stay an extra night for the Jay Marshall auction on July 27 are urged to extend their reservation right away as there is another convention coming in on the heels of the I.B.M./S.A.M. Broken Wand - Ron Zollweg -------------------------------------------- Message from Ray Eyler It is with great regret that I inform you that Ron Zollweg a/k/a/ Ron Frederick, passed away today January 2, 2008. Ron has donated his body to science, so there is not a planed family service at this time. Their address is 5510 Grace Road, Utica, NY 13502 if you would like to send a card. He was a GREAT friend , well known in U.S. magic circles and will be missed. Below is an autobiographical sketch written by Ron that gives some insight into Ron's past:  At the age of fifteen, after having seen and been fascinated by many magicians, I found some books in the school library. The rest is, as they say, history. I was working at Kodak in 1953 and doing as much work as magic for my fellow employees when word of a magician in the plant got to Joe Taylor. Joe invited me to his office and we spent a lot of time together. Eventually Joe invited me to a S.A.M. meeting and in September, 1953 I became a member of Assembly #47. During the next seven years I learned a great deal from the club members. I have been a part-time professional magician for more than 45 years. Although I have cut back on public performances, I have been performing more at magic gatherings and conventions. When I asked my old friend, Bob Follmer, "Why?".... he said, "Your sh-t is so old, it's new!" There were three people who influenced my approach to magic. The first was Paul Estee who endlessly emphasized that entertainment was "Job One". The second was Danny Johnson who showed me what "misdirection" really was. Finally, Vern Chesbro, who opened up the underground world of serious close-up magic. Over the years I have written three booklets and countless articles and convention reviews. In 1958, I wrote Commercial Card Magic as a token of gratitude to the members of S.A.M. Assembly #47. In the 1980's I wrote The Professional Routines of Ron Fredrick and notes for my lecture, It's Commercial. There are also tricks, routines and reviews in most of the major (and minor) magic magazines from 1960 to present. I love all phases of magic, but close-up is my favorite. I love being able to interact with a spectator. To improvise, ad lib and just "wing it" is the ultimate. Luckily I was able to perform countless times at Eddie Fechter's Forks Hotel. Magic has been good to me. I have met so many fascinating and wonderful people as well as most of my closest friends through magic. Magic has changed my life. Once I was a nice, shy introvert. Now, I'm an obnoxious SOB! ---------------- 11. David Winkley's Funeral ----------------- Message from Alfred Hayes (Aust) Have been advised that David's Funeral has been amended to Tuesday 8th January. Still 1100 hours (11AM) I have looked-up the address of Southern Cross Funerals and they are actually in a road leading off Forest Road - 118 Durham Street, Hurstville - Tel: 9553-9899. Proceeding along Forest Road from the "city end", as you near Hurstville Proper, the road takes a 90 degree right hand bend - in the 'middle' of the bend on your left hand side (the side you are driving on) is Durham Street. Best look at your street directory! Hope this is of some assistance. The service is ONLY at the Funeral Parlour. The final segment of the Maurice Rooklyn Ring 102 "Foundation Stone" has now, sadly, left us, aged 87 ---------------- 12. Rod Junor - Sydney Showboat ----------------- Message from Dan Solo Diane and I are just back from Sydney, Australia, where - on Christmas eve - we saw a magician who has performed one of the greatest trucks of all time: He has a found himself a long-running every day job performing magic. (If I am reliably informed, he has been in the same show for at least 15 years.) This fortunate fellow is Rod Junor, and he works aboard the Sydney Showboat which provides harbor dinner cruises with table seating for 200 or so people each evening. He works the tables with close-up before the show, acts as master of ceremonies on the stage and does a magic act. Rod Junor has that smoothness of manner that only comes with long experience, and he has learned some wonderful presentational skills. For example, we have all seen magicians who have learned to greet the audience in a number of foreign languages, but Mr. Junor carries it a step further. When he has someone from another country on stage, he greets them and then, additionally, asks for their name in their own language. The reaction from the participant and the audience is always favorable. All in all, a delightful evening. This is a good show and as great evening out in a beautiful setting. ---------------- 13. ICE: From Disaster To Rebound By Dan Stapleton ----------------- Message from Dan Stapleton Gaylord Palms, in Orlando Florida, is a huge and beautiful hotel that hosts many conventions. Each December they have a wonderful exhibit called ICE. This all began a few years ago when magician Greg Wilson (son of Mark) was asked to employ the Chinese artists in creating an Ice Wonderland within the hotel. Behind the hotel sits Radisson Resort who uses Gaylord Palms as their "over flow" (in the event that their rooms are sold out). This day Radisson was showing their appreciation by hosting a party for all the executives of Gaylord, and at the party the theme was, of course, ICE. They asked me to come up with a stunt or "trick" using Ice as its theme...but not a large scale illusion as time and space was limited. Here is the effect that I performed which I believe you will find very..."cool". Some of you will work out your own methods but I will tell you how I did mine. And since then, I have come up with different ways and presentations to perform it, as you will. By the way, here I will only tell you what the effect was and in part 2 of this story (next newsletter) I will tell you what went wrong...potential disaster...and how I recovered, which turned out very...."cool". Ask ten or twelve people to hand you their business card. The cards are handed to a spectator to shuffle up. Ask him/her to select one. She reads the name of the person to whom the card belongs. Once again she shuffles that card back into the packet of cards and a rubber band wrapped around. A block of ice is now brought forward and the stack of business cards is placed on top of the ice. A hammer is produced and a gentlemen is asked to hit the top of the stack of cards, hard enough to break the block of ice. This he does and is now asked to remove the selected business card from the stack. This, he cannot do, because the card is gone. Within the broken pieces of ice is a zip-lock bag. It is removed, the bag opened and there is the business card. That was the general effect but not how it was executed as you will read in the next newsletter. Shock ensued, something went terribly wrong, and it turned out to be a miracle nonetheless. Stay tuned... ---------------- 14. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante) (UK ex-pat Kiwi) I'm going to take a temporary rest from the 'SAGA', just for a little while you understand, for the following reasons: I. I'm not feeling all that crash hot at this point in time. 2. For some strange reason, I just can't get my head around to writing - no explanation - just one of those things. I just seem to have come to a complete standstill; my 'Get Up and Go has Got Up and Went'!!! It's not that I don't have anything to write about, there is still 'TONS' to relate, I just can't find whatever it is to get my arse into gear... Apart from all the above, I'll blame the weather as well. It is so bloody cold, yucky with grey, depressing miserable skies here in the U.K. I'm not a great fan of the English winter. Then again, so does most of the country's natural inhabitants. Hey, it's just gone 12 noon and it's starting to snow - I DO love that! 3. I WILL BE BACK! Happy New Year and, I'll catch you all later Cheers, Tom (The [not quite so...] Amazing Orchanté) -------------------------------------------- 15.
