LVMI Update Jan 08 ----------------- Message from Danny Archer (US) It's a cold winter night in Snowmass Village, Colorado. An exhilarating day of skiing has left you with a ravenous appetite and a desire to continue your magical vacation experience. Suddenly, there's a roar of laughter coming from the window under the giant tower at the end of the mall. The cheers and laughter grow louder as you draw close. You pull open the door, step inside and you're instantly a participant in an unforgettable evening of magic and comedy. Like thousands before you in the last three decades, you've just stumbled into the Tower Magic Bar. Owned by singer John Denver, the Tower Magic Bar began in 1975 when Bob Sheets arrived from Chicago. Sheets had just spent a year and a half working side by side with Heba Haba Al at the Pickle Barrel in Chicago. Then Doc Eason's one week motorcycle trip came through Snowmass Village and one man's future was forever changed. Doc never went home to California and when Bob left the Tower to open the Jolly Jester in 1977, Doc stepped behind the bar where he performed for more than twenty years. In 1989 Doc called Eric Mead about performing for a year and Eric and Doc worked together and separately behind the Tower Bar until it closed for good in April 2004. The LVMI convention is thrilled to be able to reunite these three well-known pros in what will surely be an incredible three days of sharing and learning about their special brand of magic. They will each lecture, perform and share their Tales of the Tower in a panel discussion that is not to be missed. Having a regular venue lead to the creation of tons of original, practical and commercial close-up and parlor magic, and this is your chance to learn direct from the men behind the magic. If that was all, that might be enough, but we also have three more great performers. Jay Scott Berry will be making his only US convention appearance before he emigrates to Australia. Jay's magic is very visual and is mainly performed with objects other than playing cards. Jay has some fantastic stand-up and close-up magic that he will share with all. Will Houstoun is a talented close-up performer from the UK who has been making waves in Europe but is not well-known in the US. It has been an LVMI tradition to feature one up and coming magician in our line-up and Mr. Houstoun will blow you away with his wonderful sleight of hand. Last but not least by any means is Daniel Garcia. Daniel has been at several LVMI's, but this is his first time as a featured performer and lecturer. Danny always has something fresh, new and hot to share and I can't wait to see him in action again. Another trio of pasteboard pros; Allan Ackerman, Jason England and Jon Armstrong will combine for a session called Exploring Erdnase and they will have much to show and tell about the bible of sleight of hand card magic The Expert at the Card Table. Add in the amazing cast of characters who attend and hang out and jam and you've got a jam packed three days of magic in the magic capital of the world. The LVMI convention uses two cameras and five large screen TV's so you won't miss a second of the awesome close-up action. Hotel rooms start at an affordable $59/night and there are many, many food choices from fast food, to fine dining without ever leaving the grounds of the Palace Station Hotel and Casino. Las Vegas features a menu of entertainment options, including many magic shows, that is unmatched by any city in the world. Registration is only $175 until April 15th, 2008. Don't read about this fantastic convention on-line and wish you were here.. See ya in Las Vegas Baby!!! Peace, Danny Archer 1139 S. Remarkable Magic #39 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message from Nick Lewin (US) Remarkable Magic. Fooling yourself. I recently wrote a column about my old friend Terri Rogers and her amazing mind with which she could 'think around corners' and find something new under the sun. In my writing I referred to her outstanding skills as a ventriloquist rather more than her ability to come up with truly outstanding new principles in magic. Allow me to set the record straight on that front. Shortly after publication of my piece I received an email from Martin Breese who was a close friend of Terri, released many of her effects and published her books. I have never had the pleasure of meeting Martin but have been aware of him for many years. I have particularly enjoyed his series of magical cassettes that allowed the magic world a wonderful keepsake of some remarkable performers who are no longer with us. I was especially delighted by the way Martin captured the wisdom and charm of Billy McComb and they partially inspired me to record my own three and a half hour 'Secrets behind the Secrets' McCombathon extravaganza. Tricks go on forever, it is the quirks and charms of the tricksters we have to be careful to preserve. In his email Breese told me about a new effect of Terri Rogers that he was releasing called 'Blockbuster' and he was kind enough to send me a pre-release of the effect. I do remember hearing Terri talk about this particular trick and describing it as the greatest thing she had ever invented. There was however one tiny caveat to her pride of invention. The trick didn't always work! This failure to deliver the goods on each and every outing was definitely a strong negative when Martin first marketed the effect. He has now perfected it and has re-released it in a version that works every time. What an amazing visual and mental delight 'Blockbuster' it is. When you see the effect performed it will blow you away and when you perform it yourself the effect still seems like pure magic. It is a remarkable piece of magic and discriminating close-up workers should definitely check it out. I am looking forward to meeting Martin Breese during my trip to England this fall when I lecture and perform at the IBM British Ring convention in Eastbourne. It is high time we finally get to meet each other in person. I am writing this column in the Las Vegas airport waiting for the first flight on a tour that will eventually take me to New Zealand and Australia where I am looking forward to meeting new friends and renewing my friendship with all the wonderful people I met on my 2006 visit. Marketing Magic: Advertising Shows - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message from Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com Chances are that as the more you perform magic, the more you run into this situation. You book a show for say a library or civic event and you are all excited and ready to perform. You get there, set up and ready to go and realize that your entire audience now consists of only a librarian, 5 kids and a couple adults. You start thinking hoping and praying that people are just in another room or that this can't possibly be the entire audience. This happens to everyone from time to time. As a professional, you know the show must go on and you do your show the best you can to meet the client's needs. But if you are like me, it gets you a bit irritated because you feed off of an audience. Performing for a great large group and having them react only makes the show better. But what happened? Why was there nobody there? Why were there so few people in the audience? It is so easy to blame the client and the organization that hired you. After all, they are the ones booking the show and they are the ones supposed to be advertising you and ensuring you have a good audience. Right? Well this next comment may surprise a lot of you. My answer is simply this" WRONG!" Take a deep breath now, relax and allow me to explain. Many of us magicians get the notion that when we book a show, we are there to produce the best show we can and provide the show for the client and the audience. That is our job and what we are getting paid to do. We are not getting paid to ensure we have a large audience. We are not always getting paid to advertise. To many folks, this is the job the client should be doing for us. It is part of the mutual agreement between performer and client. The problem is clients simply do not work this way in many cases. The one thing I have come to understand over the years is a simple rule that tells me that I can never assume anything. Too many of us go into a gig assuming so much from the client and then get there realizing it was never done or taken care of. In regards to audience size, however, there is something we can directly do to remedy that. Help the client and yourself to make it happen. Sounds silly doesn't it? Some of you may be saying, "it costs too much, too much of my time and why should I do their job?" In some ways you are right. Do we have to do this? NO we do not. But if my main goals are to 1) provide solutions that meet and exceed the expectations of my client and 2) keep myself working well into the future through repeat gigs and satisfied clients, then I need to change my way of thinking. I always make it a policy that if I am a "solutions provider" for my clients, then part of doing that is to create the best possible outcome for them and for me as well. With this in mind, do not rest and assume the client is going to advertise for you. Do not assume that they will do everything you want them to do. Consider this important point. Who knows your show better then yourself? You can sell and advertise your show better than anyone. It also does not take a lot of time and money to be able to do it effectively. Every show I do, I make it a policy to help assist my client in advertising and promoting my show. It is a value add to them and increases my perceived value in their own minds. It also better guarantees that I have a good size crowd when I get there. What I do is quite simple. I send them over an advertising packet to them after the show has been booked and the details worked out. This packet has valuable information in it that can help them immensely. I include things like a poster/s, 8 by 10 photos for advertising, website images to include on their website or flyers that can be copied and given out. I also send them along a simple letter that gives them ideas on how to use the items as well as tips and techniques for PR. I try and make it as easy for them as I can by providing them the right value-added tools to accomplish what they are after. It also does not require me a lot of money or time to do. Once I have these items set up, then it is easy for me to be able to send them the packet as PDF files that can be emailed directly to the client. In this fashion the client can print out anything they need from their own system and my cost is nothing. It takes me about 5 minutes to write up an email, include the attachments and hit send. This is a very small price to pay to increase my value to the client, market myself and to ensure a greater success of having a large audience eager to enjoy my show. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. -------------------------------------------- 8. Entertaining On The Ocean #18 - Paul Romhany -------------------------------------------- Message from Paul Romhany (NZ) Working on the High Seas This week I will offer a little advice to those who are getting into cruising or who are thinking about it. One of the things you start to learn as you cruise around the world is that it isn't all fun and games. Actually the travel alone can be very taxing and draining on your body. It can also take its toll if you are not careful. There are two different types of magicians who work cruise ships. Those who are 'fly on' acts and those who stay on a ship for a long period of time, usually illusionists but that is not always the case. In my case, I have a wife and home so don't like to be away for a long period of time, which is why I will fly out for a week or so then fly back home. A fly on act must be able to pack very small and play very big. The master of this type of act and a person we all learnt so much from was Billy McComb. Billy could certainly pack very small and play to large theatres. The thing I learnt from Billy was that it is all about personality and not so much the tricks. Sure his magic was super strong (look at his Himber ring routine) but you were entertained which I think made the magic that much stronger when it happened. Your act has to be strong enough to play a 1500 seat theatre and practical enough to work where you are completely surrounded, even people directly above you looking down! If you have two types of these shows then you are on your way to looking at cruising. The reason I bring this up is because of the experience I am recovering from. After a three month stint on four different ships, I left Natalie at home while I went away to work a ship for a week. However, because the gig was in such a remote part of Brazil with only two flights in and out each week, they had to fly me in earlier. I am currently sitting in a hotel lobby after having traveled 24 hours to get here. Something I discovered many years ago was to DEMAND that I always get the port agents phone number and the hotel I am to be staying in BEFORE I leave. The worst feeling is traveling in and out of countries and nobody to pick you up, you don't speak the language and you have no idea of the hotel you are staying in. To cap it all off, I arrived this morning at 3am, waited in this humid and intimidating airport for the port agent. I had several emails saying they would pick me up and organized a hotel etc. However upon arrival there was nobody there. I waited two hours before another person appeared and I was able to borrow a phone, call the agent and they sent a driver out to me. As usual no hotel was booked so they 'dumped' me in a place that was dirty, no hot water. I probably slept a few hours before phoning the port agent back and demanding they take me to a more respectable hotel . which they did and where I am now! I should probably explain that a 'port agent' is an agency that works for the cruise line and is supposed to pick you up, book hotel rooms and look after you when you arrive and leave a ship. In most cases they are very good, however there are far too many stories about them not getting messages, not picking people up. My main worry about this particular port in Brazil was that a good friend of mine was badly attacked here early last year after the port agent didn't turn up and he had to find his own hotel. Prior to leaving for this cruise I made sure my agent contacted the cruise line and at least gave me the port agents name and phone number, plus emergency after hours number. ALWAYS make sure you get this information. It's got to the point now where I refuse to even leave for a ship if I don't have this information. There have been instances where I turned up and nobody to meet me, I phoned the contact number I was given only to be told that they were no longer the port agent for that cruise line and had not been for many years! I don't think some of them update their files that often. So there is my story for this week and a little advice for those wanting to start cruising. What you start to learn is that you don't get paid for the shows anymore, but for the stress, the travel and the hassle of it all. Is it worth it?? I really am starting to have my doubts. -------------------------------------------- 9. Calendars Online ----------------- Message from Professor Spellbinder I have several free resources on my site that might be of interest to your readers. One is the Calendar of Events which is up-dated daily. It contains information about all magic gathering events like conventions and get-togethers worldwide, plus events for clowns, jugglers, ventriloquists and those in the related arts. http://www.magicnook.com/calendar/calendar.htm The next resource is a calendar of magic lectures. This is also updated daily and lists only lectures on magic subjects. It is tied to a list of lecturers, so if your magic club needs a good lecturer, you can use this list to find someone. http://www.magicnook.com/calendar/lectures.htm For those doing magic research, you may find my Inventor Resources of interest. This consists of an index for each major magic book, with emphasis on the creators of the individual tricks in that book. If you need to know who came up with (for example) the Panama Rope trick, you can search and find it in Volume 2 of Tarbell (Ted Collins is the answer). http://www.magicnook.com/forum/projectTOC.htm As an additional resource, you'll also find a line to my Brief Biographies of Magic Inventors, so if you don't know who Ted Collins was, for example, just flip through the biographies to find magicians listed alphabetically by their magic stage names. The biography will give you their real names, their dates of birth (and death, if deceased) and lists of their most famous inventions (as well as names of books they have authored). http://www.magicnook.com/forum/bioAB.htm -------------------------------------------- 12. Magic At The Edge - Jeff Mcbride -------------------------------------------- Message from Tobias & Jeff McBride (US) Dear Friends (from Tobias): Wow -- it's already been a busy year! Jeff and Abbi and Jordan have just returned from the island of Hainan, off the southern coast of China, where they performed "Magic at the Edge" at a corporate event. Now, as January winds to a close, those of you who have Magic Magazine's annual calendar will be bidding goodbye to Jeff McBride's photos as "Mr. January." Jeff is honored to be the lead-off magician for 2008! Before moving on to additional news, I'd like to share a story from one of Jeff's students, Jacques le Sueur. This is from an e-mail sent us by Jacques: ----------------------- I've just been up to Lagos, Nigeria to perform at corporate shows, but had a chance to go into the jungle and entertain at a couple of villages. The chief of one village, Big John, asked me as I left if I could give him the Lottery numbers. I said sure, but could only give him four of the five numbers, the last he'd have to choose for himself. I gave him some random numbers, and then forgot about it. At 3:30 that morning I got a phone call at the hotel from my corporate host. The Lottery numbers had come through, and the village has won a very small fortune!! They're using the money to put a borehole in, get electricity, and redo some of the shack housing. Oh, and putting a small statue of me in the centre of the village. :-) ----------------------------- It just goes to show -- your magic can change the lives of others in ways far beyond what you might imagine! Before I turn this over to Jeff, I wanted to let you know that Jeff's column "Ask the Show Doctor," which appears monthly in MAGIC Magazine, is about to become a live entity in and of itself. Sometime in February we'll be activating the online version, in which anyone who visits MagicalWisdom.com can log on and post questions for Jeff to answer in his role as "The Show Doctor," with answers viewable by all. We'll let you know when the new site is live -- but you can start collecting your questions for Jeff right now! Happy New Year to All! Question About Multiplying Billiard Balls -------------------------------------------- Message from Eddie Sikorski elmsley@operamail.com Hi all Thank you to everyone who responded to my enquiry about the remote coin dropper. I was surprised by the number of useful responses from so many of you. Here's another request... I have recently purchased a set of 2" Stainless Steel Multiplying Billiard Balls. To my surprise, the shell doesn't fit. It just sits on top of the ball instead of the ball nesting inside the shell. The Australian supplier claims that he has never heard of a shell that matches the ball as described (even though he sells Vernet sets!) These balls cost a lot of money and I purchased them in good faith with the obvious expectation of a correct design. If you have a spare moment, could you please email me a brief note about this dilemma. Especially something about the fact that balls SHOULD nest inside their shell (I have several types and they all do). Also advice about how to get a satisfactory result from the supplier... Return product and receive store credit, etc. Such inferior products should not be sold to fellow Magicians. I would like to forward these replies to the offending merchant as support for my request for a refund/exchange. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Eddie Sikorski -------------------------------------------- 15.
