Combined Convention in modern history will close the registration when a total of 2000 have signed up was announced today. "Even though we have plenty of space in the theaters," said Miller, "we will be maxed out at the hotels for all of the events we have planned. Also, we have some other surprises that logistically makes 2000 a better working number for us to handle." We remind you that the Combined Convention headquarters, the Galt House Hotel and Suites is currently sold out and we are sending the overflow hotel reservations to the nearby Marriott Courtyard Downtown Hotel. The Marriott is just two blocks from the Galt House their phone number is (502) 562-0200, a flat rate of $129 for single or double occupancy, plus applicable taxes, is guaranteed for those who use the "IBMSAM" reservation code. Fantasma Magic, NYC Presents - The David Roth Coin Workshop -------------------------------------------- Message from Roger Dreyer (US) Fantasma Magic, NYC Presents The David Roth Coin Workshop for Intermediate Level Coin Magicians Friday, February 22, 2008 - 7:00 - 9:00 PM Join Fantasma's own David Roth for an illuminating evening on intermediate sleight of hand with coins. This workshop is a must for anyone serious about improving their coin magic. David says: "It's always gratifying to help magicians improve their coin magic." There will be hands-on personal instruction covering: Coins across routines Copper/silver routines and moves Effects with coins in a handkerchief Okito coin box Plus coin vanishes, switches, Spellbound moves, and much more! This workshop is not for the beginner. You should already be able to "classic" palm a coin. You should bring, if possible, coins, a close-up pad, coin boxes and a handkerchief as well as any trick coins you might want to learn to work with. David as many of you might know is one of the nicest guys in magic. He's also one of the smartest and most knowledgeable. It's always a joy to see David work whether it's performing or lecturing. He is without doubt one of the smoothest coin men in the world and one of the most down to earth "legends" you will ever have the pleasure to meet. The workshop will take place at Fantasma Magic and will be limited to a small group. The price is $100 per person. A bargain at any price! This event sells out quickly, so please sign up ASAP. Nick Lewin Comedy Super **Star** -------------------------------------------- Message from Mike Easterbrook (NZ) I had the pleasure of being invited along to one of another of the well known Richard Webster's 'events'. The last one I attended was when Doc Hilford was out here in NZ. That was a most entertaining evening. Richard invites a few of his close friends and the odd magician. I'm probably one of those! I'm not sure if we should all be put into the odd basket! This time it was to be entertained by Nick Lewin. He was in town briefly on a cruise ship, this time with his wife Susan along. I have written about Nick Lewin before. He came and lectured for the Auckland magicians some time back and I went to that too! For me it is a round trip of more than 100 miles. I picked up an old mate. A younger magician living in Auckland who used to be in Whangarei and he thought it was great. The audience was mostly 'real' (I never liked that word layman) people and the odd (?) magician, we enjoyed a very funny 50 minutes of comedy magic. When you think that by the time Nick was barely out of his teens, he had already travelled the world doing magic, you can assume he would be fairly experienced. Cruise ship or Las Vegas present no problems for him. It was highly entertaining. The gags flowed as well as the magic. People next to me were almost in hysterics as Nick presented his set which included the classic Elmsley newspaper tear, the dyed handkerchief, note in lemon,(actually a card) Kovari's water trick, gypsy thread and others. My wedding ring became linked to three others and fortunately I did not have to travel home with any of those people as eventually they unlinked in a very well structured and zappy routine. You know you are watching talent when the audience has barely stopped laughing from one gag and the next gag follows right along so the laughter is almost continuous. The icing on the cake if you will excuse the pun was that it was Nick's birthday that day and the kindly Alan and Michele Watson had organised a cake. We sang happy birthday to Nick. I know he was touched. It was nice cake too. Come again Nick & Susan. Thanks to Richard and Margaret and their helpers for the splendid drinks and nibbles prior to the show. It was nice to see Gene McCarthy along too. -------------------------------------------- 6. Remarkable Magic #41 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message from Nick Lewin (US) A bird in the post is worth two in the bush. When writing about Norm Nielsen you automatically get a great two for one package. Anyone who has seen Norm's iconic act knows that there are very, very few performers who can aspire to his degree of perfection. However he doesn't stop there. In the early 80s I was producing a series of shows for AMD and was putting together a special event in the heart of Silicon Valley. I assembled a crack team of close-up performers and invited Norm to join me on the after-dinner entertainment. I had been very impressed watching Norm on television back in England and was excited to have the opportunity to work with him. The banquet room we performed in was a typical banquet room (i.e. it was very unsuited to presenting a magic show) and this particular room proved to be way to long for the width. An intimate show became much more visually challenging from the rear of the room. I was confident of the impact Norm's signature violin would have on the crowd but wanted to check the visibility of his Miser's Dream routine. As I stood at the back of the room I was astounded by the reaction of each and every coin as it was produced and then jangled its way down the musical ladder it was dropped into. It is amazing how often in magic the visible is augmented significantly by the audible and this was a perfect example of that principle. It was a joy that night to watch Norm performing and to realize I had the chance to share a bill with one of the true greats in magic. As a magician I think of Norm fondly every time I perform, as there is never a show when I do not use one of his props. I am always grateful that his expertise and high standards are extended to his manufacturing and retailing of magical props. I have opened my show with the production of a rubber dove for several decades. That takes me back to the dark and dismal days of doves that looked nothing like any bird seen this side of hell! The "Ooh" that accompanies the production of a N.N. dove is the gold standard mark of authentic fakery. My second show features a routine made possible by Norm's rubber Coca Cola bottle and it allows me to add a great ending to a favorite effect. Once again the total authenticity of the prop takes the effect into a different league. If only all props were made this well! The quality of the Norm Nielsen magic line is enriched by a customer service from Norm and Lupe that is second to none. Twice a year, as regular as clockwork, I order a new dove. One call to Lupe results in a dove arriving so quickly it couldn't have flown across Vegas faster! It is a pleasure to know that there is still excellence onstage and off in magic and its name is Norm! As always send any bricks or bouquets to nicklewin1@mac.com and check out my website at www.nicklewin.com -------------------------------------------- 7. Magicians Tips of The Trade - By Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message from Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com As a magician and a lover of the manipulative arts, I often have come up with tips over the years that have really helped me a lot and saved me from a lot of potential headaches. There always seems to be Murphy's Law working against us every show we do. This article is a list of some of these tips that I have come up with for myself to help avoid as many pitfalls as possible. I hope they may be of help to you as well. - Always have backups for most of your entire act and store them in a separate location. The reason is that you will forget things, lose things or break things. Having a back up helps prevent nightmares. - Always carry with you what I refer to as the manipulators tool kit. This is a small case filled with things you can most always use or need. These can be extra clips, black tape, duct tape, safety pins, card clamps, extra cards, scissors, thread etc. Just items you know you need or can use from time to time. Having it with you or in your case can save you a lot of time. - Have gloves with you at all times. there is no way you will be able to do effective manipulation if your hands are cold. wear gloves backstage or as you load and unload to protect your hands and keep them warm before you go on. - Bring a towel with you. a towel will help you keep your hands dry and free from sweat before you go out on stage. - You may want to bring some different forms of manipulators lotion. There are many out there. It helps give your hands a bit of tack to them. - Carry with you a check list not only of your props but also one of your loads and where things go as well as an outline of your act itself. When you are backstage and nervous chances are you do not think as clearly as you want to think. Having these is a huge help to refer to. - Make a sign for yourself that reads "slow down.. relax.. you are supposed to be having fun stupid". This sounds funny but trust me on this. Keep this sign or signs in your prop cases so you can see it. Too many of us speed up because we are nervous and uptight and on edge. This sign helps me remind myself of why I am there doing what I do. - Bring a portable CD player or your iPod with you that has your music on it and bring head phones. It is really great to be able to get set up and to relax yourself, play the music with the headphones on. This helps you get into the mood of the act before you even hit the stage. It also helps you to run through the act pantomime a few times before you hit the stage. - Always Always double check your set up before it is placed on stage and before you begin. Chances are something can shift or someone back stage may have bumped something and thought they were helping you by TRYING to put it back. Always double check just to be sure. - Check your angles at every location long before the show begins. So many times manipulators get to an event and forget to check the audience angles. By doing so, you will know where to strike the stage and what may have to be adjusted so you do not flash anything during performance. There are certainly many more that can be added here, but I will leave it at this for now. It is my goal to get you thinking about ways in which you can create tips for yourself to help you with any show you are doing. Often times what separates the professional from the amateur is simply in preparation. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. -------------------------------------------- 8. Entertaining On The Ocean #20 - Paul Romhany -------------------------------------------- Message from Paul Romhany (NZ) www.chaplinmagic.com This is the second series in the fantastic article by Chris Michaels. Back over to you Chris. Part two Here's some tips and perks I have learned of over the past year: Airline Miles Pick just three major airlines and join their frequent flier programs. When a cruise ship buys for your airline ticket they will probably book you on the cheapest flight available. Those cheap flights are sometimes booked on smaller airlines such as Air Canada, NWA, Air France or Hawaii Airlines. If you are booked with a smaller airline, go to their website and do a search under "Partners". Find one of your three "chosen" frequent flier airlines in their partner family. For example: Delta has the Skyteam Global Alliance, United has the Star Alliance and American has their Aadvantage programs. For example, a few weeks ago I flew to Montreal on Air Canada. Air Canada is a member of United Airlines partner program. When I checked in I asked for the Air Canada miles to be tacked on to United's frequent flier plan. It is better to have only three frequent flier memberships than seven or eight. Your miles will add up faster. Excursion Escorts Here's another extra "perk" I didn't find out about until after my first nine months of cruising. I would occasionally pay for an excursion offered by the cruise line. Usually it's a bus ride to a folk arts show, lunch and shopping in the port city. Other entertainers would talk of their trips into town and what they've seen. I seldom do excursions as they could become quite expensive. On my first year of cruising I was trying to save money, wanting to recoup all the expenses I had buying charts, costumes, instruments and cases. One guest entertainer (finally) told me about being a Tour Escort. An escort represents the cruise company, going on the excursion, helping the guests and writing a short review for the cruise line. After getting your bags to your room and checking in with the cruise director my third stop is always looking over the excursion brochure. The brochure lists all the upcoming excursions. Mark the brochure with choices of "1", "2" and "3" by your favored choices. Don't expect to be a (free) escort if the trip is a $500 small plane trip over the glaciers in Alaska. Any free tour is a good thing! Any time away from the ship and travel beyond the dock t-shirt stores is welcome! Be sure to find out what day your technical or band rehearsal is. You don't want to be scheduled for a 4 ½ hour excursion and not get back in time for your band rehearsal. Experience is always the best teacher, I hope my insights and tips will help. Good luck cruising! Bio: Chris Michaels is a veteran theme park entertainer having worked at Disney World, Knott's Berry Farm, Great America and Cypress Gardens. Chris worked Sea World for 14 years performing over 10,000 shows for 25 million people. Currently he performs a 10 instrument musical comedy act on the Holland America Cruise line. Presence In Performance -------------------------------------------- Message from Sëan Tretheway I have been performing close-up for about 30 years now. For several years at the beginning, I was a bartender and then I found a method of working restaurants that kept me busy six nights a week, which I did for about 18 years. I've slowed down now to 3 regular gigs a week. I make a full-time living doing magic working about 4 hours a week. I have to say, this is a dream come true for me. The only reason I point this out is to say, "yes! it can be done!" After about 15 years working six nights a week, I started feeling that something in my performance was missing. I knew I was doing my job well, I knew I was getting the great reactions, but something just didn't feel right. My clients wouldn't have agreed with me but I could tell something was lacking. There was another level, higher than the one I was on. Then, about seven years ago, I happened to be in a bookshop and a book spoke to me. It said, "Read Me, The answers you seek are within". I started reading that book and when I finished it, I read it again, and again, and again for about five years until the message started to become a part of my daily life. And the message was this, Be Present. That's it. Simple. As I woke up to the present moment more and more, I realized that this was what I was lacking. I had done my routines so many times that I was drifting into autopilot. I would often find myself daydreaming during performance - thinking about what I was going to do the next day or what I was going to watch on tv when I got home that night. Sometimes I would come to in the middle of an effect thinking to myself, "did I do the secret move yet? Did I get a good reaction to the funny gag yet? Where am I?" It's like when you're driving for an hour and suddenly you reach your destination thinking, "Where did that hour go? Who was driving?" You know you drove well but you weren't aware of your driving. As I said, I was on auto pilot and anyone watching would have told you that I was totally there and doing a great job, but I knew different. The thing that was missing, was me. I wasn't there. As I started to implement what I was learning from that book into my daily life, lots of changes started happening. In performance I found that I was actually enjoying myself more. Rather than doing the same thing over and over the same way, I was noticing subtler and subtler nuances of every illusion - ways to improve and grow. I found I was connecting with my audiences more on a deeper level and they were becoming more profoundly affected, not just by the magic, but by the energy I was putting out. It's like a magnet that gently draws them closer. The power of being totally in the present moment is astonishing in itself and when coupled with Magic it is deeply profound and felt by everyone around you. Just a little something to think about. If you feel this, I highly recommend "The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle. Cheers! S. Sëan Tretheway www.theroadlesstraveller.com -------------------------------------------- 13.
