Massive Exposure In Brazil -------------------------------------------- Mahatma Director - The Magical Arts Project National Director - International Magicians Society A massive magic exposure is underway in Brazil through the weekly TV show Tudo é Possível ("Everything is Possible"), hosted by Eliana Michaelichen Bezerra Guedes (1973). The show is aired every Sunday, at 2 pm, by Record TV Network, and has millions of viewers. A masked magician (not Valentino) has been revealing the secrets of amazing illusions like the "floating table" and "walking through a mirror". It´s disgusting! A group of Brazilian magicians is evaluating the feasibility of suing the television network and the directors of the show. To ensue this doesn't continue happening, the Brazilian Chapter of the International Magicians Society (IMS) is requesting that Brazilian and foreign colleagues send messages to the Executive Director of the show to express their feelings and concern. They should send messages to: Alessandra Chevchuk - alessandrachevchuk@hotmail.com -------------------------------------------- 3. Stars Of Magic 2008 - Istanbul -------------------------------------------- Message from Lee Alex "Stars of Magic 2008 - Istanbul "From 16th - 20th April 2008 we are producing 7 shows over five days - "Stars of Magic 2008 - Istanbul". The line-up includes Las Vegas headliner Jeff McBride, Kevin James along with "Charlie Chaplin" and the "Operation" as presented on America's Got Talent, from Milan Erix Logan and Sara Maya, from Belgium Aaron Crow and from London, myself, Lee Alex. The event celebrates my 25th year on stage, bringing together some very popular names, each performing their own style of magic and illusion. Erix Logan was here in Istanbul just this weekend and performed a straight jacket escape at 25 metres. His weekend was also filled with interviews for magazines, newspapers, television and an appearance on a popular talk show. The promotions for the show will continue this coming week with appearances by me in Istanbul's most prestigious shopping centre, filming for various Turkish television programmes and more interviews. The week following this Aaron Crow will visit from Belgium, and the week running up to the actual event Jeff McBride will be in Istanbul with Abbi. Again plenty of publicity lined up and Jeff will also be giving a two day Master Class for Turkish magicians - the very first Master Class in Turkey. When the shows begin and our stars have arrived in Istanbul we will be visiting some hospitals and homes bringing magic to those who are not so fortunate to be able to make it to the shows themselves. The performances will take place in the Türker Inanoglu Show Center in Istanbul, a brand new 1,800 seat venue. The whole event has been put together by my manager and producer Tamer Kurter of Magic Concept Entertainment. This is the first event of this kind in Turkey and if it proves popular we wish to make plans immediately for 2009. In 2010 Istanbul will host as the European City of Culture and it is our wish to continue this program until that time with shows for the public and maybe the extension of a magic convention for magicians from all over the world. I have already had several enquiries from people abroad who either want to participate in the shows themselves, or from fellow magicians who wish to visit the enchanting city of Istanbul and capture some magic at the same time. If readers of your newsletter are interested in watching "Stars of Magic 2008 - Istanbul", tickets are available for purchase here: http://www.biletix.com/event.htm?id=JEMC1 If anyone needs help in finding accommodation, for their stay in Istanbul, they are welcome to contact me directly: info@leealex.com Lee Alex -------------------------------------------- 5. Nick Lewin Is Right On Track -------------------------------------------- Message from Carl Williams As usual Nick Lewin is right on track concerning his latest article about Johnny Platt. This guy, in my opinion, was indeed one of the most solid magicians I have ever met in my some 80 years of magic. Johnny was the man that encouraged and sponsored me to become a regular member of the Hollywood Magic Castle. In addition, for many years, Johnny encouraged me to continue building premium magic apparatus. I got a real kick out of Nick's comment about Johnny and the Indian Rope Trick gag he often did on stage. Regardless of the numerous times I saw him present that bit of humor I never tired of it. It always brought a smile to my lips. I should mention that Johnny always started his act by leaning over and, while removing his Fez, he would stroke his hand over he completely bald head while commenting "there will be no long haired magic from me." He would then go into his first trick in which he rolled a Walsh vanishing cane in a newspaper saying he was going to make a black cane change into a blue one. After the cane vanished instead of changing color, and as he crumpled the newspaper, his comment was, "A blue, a blue, a blue, I guess I blue that one." Johnny also did a great job with the Kuma tubes. In fact I don't remember ever seeing them performed any better by any performer. In closing there is one additional comment I would like to make regarding Johnny Platt. This man was able to make a good living doing what he really loved. It was quite obvious to anyone seeing him perform that he was in love with his craft. I miss Johnny and am so happy that in my magic collection I have a short 8 inch piece of rope that he used for many years to do his famous thumb tie. This little piece of sweat soaked rope and some wonderful memories are now all I have left of this true friend. There is no amount of money that would make me part with this little remembrance of Johnny. Johnny was indeed one of the dearest performers I have ever met in my many years of life. Thank you Nick, you have indeed accurately purported your experience with one of magic's true greats, our mutual friend, Johnny Platt. -------------------------------------------- 6. Remarkable Magic #45 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message from Nick Lewin (US) Remarkable Magic #44. Johnny Platt revisited. Last week I wrote about one of my favorite magicians amongst the regulars at the Magic Castle. I am delighted to say that I seem to have struck a nerve with many other magicians in talking about Johnny Platt. The first time I worked the 'old' Palace of Mysteries at the Castle it was located in the cellar of the building and it was tiny. Sometimes, with the wind in the right direction and nobody from the fire department in sight, it could hold 50 people in the auditorium. My premier week as a performer I shared the stage with Johnny Platt. He was a very comforting figure to a slightly nervous 21 year-old magician. This was a very good thing on my opening night when Don Lawton popped backstage to inform us that Cary Grant was in the audience with David Niven. Ingrid Bergman was seated on the other side of the theater and Goldie Hawn was standing in the crowd in the back of the room. I had many great emails about last week's memories of Johnny Platt. I wanted to take time out and acknowledge a couple of them in print. Before the column was a nano second old there was a note from Stan Kramien who fondly remembered the way Johnny would always be front row and center for his opening night at the Castle; Stan would introduce him as his father! He also reminded me of the Snow White coffee shop on Hollywood Boulevard where he would have late night breakfasts with Johnny. I haven't thought about the Snow White in years and it instantly brought back happy memories and a slightly queasy stomach. Steve Dacri also remembered what a great supporter of magic Platt was and recalled the look of delight in Johnny's eyes when he got to replace Steve in the close-up gallery so Steve could do 'real' gig. Sometimes he actually had another gig booked and sometimes he just enjoyed the look of glee when he asked Platt to fill in for him. Paul Daniels cracked me up with an email stating that any gag that involved the line: "Is there a small Hindu boy in the Audience tonight?" was definitely not practical today in England where you might well get stampeded onstage! My very favorite story came from Don Wiberg who wrote: 'One of the favorite stories about Johnny that made the rounds among Chicago magicians had to do with the time Johnny went to buy a new suit. His wife went him with to assist in the selection. They picked out a rather nice suit and as the tailor was taking the measurements, Mrs. Platt reminded the tailor to make sure to leave room for his balls! The tailor was surprised at the request and almost collapsed in laughter not knowing that Mrs. Platt was referring to the balls that Johnny used in his "Cups and Ball" routine. (He always kept the large ball for the climax in his pants pockets.)' That story had my wife Susan and myself rolling on the floor! Thank you everyone for your emails, anecdotes, stories and comments. I really enjoy receiving them and knowing you are enjoying my very informal, slightly haphazard and highly personal recollections. For me it's never the tricks but always those crazy characters who make magic a joy. As always send any bricks or bouquets to nicklewin1@mac.comand check out my website at www.nicklewin.com -------------------------------------------- 7. A Magician's Promise - By Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message from Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com I wanted to write this week and take a drastically different approach than I normally do. I wanted to write something from the heart and something that has deep meaning and importance to me as a magician in the magical arts. I hope that you will read this and indulge me for a few minutes as I think this may open some eyes and mean a lot to you as it does me. I have seen so many magicians lately at conventions and at shows and in forums and I just feel this sense that a lot of us have forgotten who we are and where we came from. That we forget what it means to be a magician and how we should act towards an audience and our fellow magic brethren. So I wanted to take this week to make a magicians promise from me to every single one of you reading this right now. This is my personal promise to you. I promise that I will never accept second best or "it's good enough" from myself. I promise that I will respect my fellow magicians so I may get the same respect back. I promise that I will never ever forget that my Audience is everything and without them I am a lonely man on a stage alone. I promise to always make my magic for my Audience and never fall in love with performing for myself. I promise that I will never reveal a secret of magic to a non magician. I promise that I will never embarrass another magician through my own actions. I promise to support my magic brethren and help out in any way that I can so we all may grow. I promise to remember that failure is never failure if I continue to learn something from it. If I do learn then it is a step on the road to success. I promise never ever to give up my love and passion for the magical arts and if I do, then I promise to place my wand aside until that passion comes back. I promise that there is never a dumb question, only the question not asked. I promise to support the future stars of magic and to assist the beginners coming into the magical arts in any way I can. I promise to listen to any magician and to realize every single question is a valid one and worthy of me listening, helping and assisting no matter how silly it may seem to others. I promise that I will never take the easy way out by performing an effect like someone else. I promise to not cheat myself or others by stooping low enough as to steal another's act, trick or routine. I promise to always push myself and my art by striving to be a creative thinker of magic. I promise to treat my audience helpers like guests in my own home. I promise to never allow my own ego to grow so large that I forget who I really am. I promise to always remember that being a professional does not start when the curtains open and end when they close. I promise to never stop learning and to continue to always expand my knowledge of the magical arts and its history. I promise to remember to never "take a day off" in any performance just because I feel tired or bored. I promise to always give 100% effort in every show or performance I do. I promise to remember that at every show I do, there may be a child seeing a magician for the first time. I promise to remember that magic is not about fooling people but about entertaining them. But most of all I promise to never, ever forget that being a magician is an honor and a privilege. This is my promise to you. I plan on printing this out and placing it in my office so that I can see it daily as a reminder to myself of what magic means to me and how I can do my part to ensure that the magical arts continues to grow. I hope by chance maybe some of you will make this promise as well. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. Entertaining On The Ocean #24 - Paul Romhany -------------------------------------------- Message from Paul Romhany (NZ) www.chaplinmagic.com Taking a break Natalie and I have taken some time out to enjoy our home and catch up on our renovations. We have taken a much needed break from traveling and ship life. We start on ships again mid April. Our agent has been fantastic and understands our need for a break and is able to work around my needs and schedule. Taking this time off has allowed me to really concentrate on a few other projects. I have had several new effects come on the market in the last month including my own version of Multiplying Bottles. I perform both a 9 bottle routine and 12 bottle routine. It comes with a DVD with performance and an audio CD with my routines on them. Please call Midwest Magic at (847) 455-4288 for reservations The Surreally Creative Sylvester It's said, there's a fine line between genius and insanity. Well, Dan Sylvester (AKA Sylvester the Jester) has definitely crossed that line. In the late 80's, inspired by the cartoons that had thrilled him as a boy, Dan began to use his skills as an artist, magician and inventor to design and build some of the wildest, cartoonyest, magic effects anyone has ever seen. But then in the 90's Dan took it quite literally to a whole new dimension when he created his madcap, stage persona "Sylvester the Jester a Real Live Cartoon". When Sylvester performs, all the laws that govern a 3 dimensional reality, go right out the window, like steam out of his ears! So now, whether it's through the eyes of the cameras of NBC's "World's Wildest Magic" or ABC's "Champions of Magic", the Royal family of Monaco or through the eyes and ears of ordinary people in theaters all over the world, what they've all seen and experienced is something totally new and original! -------------------------------------------- 19.
