Britain's Got Talent - Paul Daniels -------------------------------------------- Message from Paul Daniels (UK) As you know I am normally an easy going guy who gets on with the job of being a professional magician and, I confess, I do tend to 'divorce' myself from the world of convention magic most of the time because I like to tread my own path in my own style. What others get up to is their business. If others think that camera tricks, pre-stooging and programme-creation-by-editing is 'magic' then I actually feel sorry for them and for the viewers, but there's nothing I can do about it, and I have to accept that nowadays, ANYONE can be a TV magician, even if they are not trained at all. They can even become 'stars'. I also know that writing an essay like this will bring down a ton of stuff defending their way of doing screen trickery and they will never accept how wrong they are. BUT.. That's not why I write! In the past few weeks, in the United Kingdom, I don't think that at any time in my life I have ever felt so ashamed of my chosen theatrical art form. We have, and I am sure that Simon Cowell will now have sold the format world-wide, a programme called 'Britain's Got Talent'. In the main it sets out to prove that Britain hasn't got talent at all because the producers WANT to show the worst acts so that the 'judges' can score points off them. At least the original version of this show, The Gong Show, was entertaining in that bad acts were 'created' to be funny. Sometimes, on BGF, the 'acts' even have obvious mental problems and can be slightly backwards, and I just get embarrassed. The other famous 'new talent' show, was Hughie Green's 'Opportunity Knocks'. Hughie used to hold auditions and weed out such people and horrendously bad acts to show the nation the best of professional and amateur acts out there. Like the recent spate of fake phone in programmes, it was fixed, but at least you could sit down on a Saturday night and be entertained by a wide variety of acts you had not seen before. Into this latest mixture came the magic acts. Oh My God. OF COURSE the producers loved them. This is EXACTLY the crap they want to show the nation. Are there any good magicians out there? I am not being facetious. That is a serious question. Do these acts REALLY not know how BAD, how TERRIBLE, how UNDER-REHEARSED, they are? Do these acts REALLY not compare themselves with the rest of the showbusiness scene? Do they really not see how they can't even WALK PROPERLY on a stage? The list of horrible errors goes on and on. Debbie and I were invited to go to one of the shows and view one of the acts and then we were to pass comments. We really, for the sake of magic, wanted to be supportive and encouraging even if the act wasn't up to winning. We thought we might be able to give some constructive help as we do have a lot of experience in all types of magic and from time to time have been asked to direct magic shows. There was NOTHING we could say to save this act. I wanted to crawl away. The audience booed and I hate to say it but they were right. The act said they had been stitched up. NO. The audience were not part of any 'stitch up'. For goodness sake - LISTEN TO THE AUDIENCE. The Indian magic act that was on the night before was terrible. OK. He was an amateur BUT MAGIC IS A THEATRICAL EXPERIENCE and you HAVE to think about every aspect of that theatrical production. You really can't just buy tricks and go 'on' and do them if you want to honour this art and do it justice. Please, I beg you, for the sake of magic and its image in the world, REALLY look at yourselves without conceit. Get a professional theatrical director from outside the magic scene to look at you and your act and your presentation and LISTEN to what they have to say. In case you think I am in some way bitter and twisted, here are just some of the unedited comments I have had via email since we were on that show: Saw you two on Britain's Got Talent and not sure if you were watching final but HOW did Escala and the young girl singer (Faryl?) NOT get into the top 3..?? It's all a fix - this telephone voting I think the audience had it right when they booed him- I think Caudine (?) may have been a "looker " in her time -- legs up to her arm pits-but she was well past it and her outfit made her look like a hooker. The act was titled 'Sexy Magic' but how can a little fat guy with a face like a pig be 'sexy'? We were competitors in the show but pushed to one side because we didn't tell a tale of poverty or hardship and we weren't young enough to be exploited. Here's a comment from one of the judges to Debbie in a corridor of the studio: 'I didn't realise how bad magicians are. We have seen so many and they are all absolute rubbish. Are there really no good ones?' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOSBgVVmwwQ&feature=related -------------------------------------------- 3. Kandide's world is without a doubt one of the most magical places I've ever visited. And I can't wait to go back." Cyril Takayama-Magic Castle Magician of the Year -------------------------------------------- 5. Remarkable Magic #53 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message from Nick Lewin (US) All dressed up with nowhere to go. Over the years I have done many strange gigs in many strange places. Having written about some of my favorite acquaintances in Magic New Zealand for the last two years I have decided to indulge in a story or two about some of those weird and wonderful gigs. My second home in Los Angeles during the seventies (as readers of my column will be well aware) was the Magic Castle. I have no idea how many weeks I worked in the various showrooms but I can honestly say that one night stands above all others in my memory when it comes to the weird and wonderful department. I was ready to perform in the Palace of Mysteries when I pulled up in my car to the parking attendant. However I was instantly aware that something was in the air. The lobby and entryway to the Castle was filled with people and a buzz of excitement filled the air. The parking valet quickly filled me in on what all the excitement was about. There had been a surprise visit by the Los Angeles Fire Department and they had put down their official foot. The Castle had been deemed unsafe for visitors until various changes had been implemented. This couldn't have been a huge surprise to anybody as I am pretty sure the Castle must have been teetering on the very edge of official approval for many years. Even if the Fire Department hadn't caught a glimpse of McComb scattering burning embers from his pipe onto the carpet there must have been many causes for alarm. To most clubs the fact that their members and guest were not allowed in the clubhouse might have curtailed the evening's events there and then. This was definitely and defiantly not the case for the Castle and quick thinking saved the day and created a unique event. The entire activities had been relocated from the Castle into their adjacent parking structure! Tables, chairs, lights, bar service, shows and guests were now to be found in a garage. Best of all the Castle guests were milling around formally dressed to the nines in this outrageously informal setting. Not a single guest removed their jacket or ties, in fact with a splendid sense of sartorial elegance Bill Larsen had donned a tuxedo for the occasion as, scotch in hand, while he directed the proceedings. I performed my show as planned in the new location and had an additional sense of joy at the absurdity of the situation. It was the first and last time I dressed up and pulled money from a lemon in a garage! Fortunately I was not unfamiliar with the parking structure and had in fact spent a little time in it with Channing Pollack the previous evening reflecting on life and what not. I still treasure memories of both events. This entire scenario was repeated for several more nights until the necessary changes had been completed. It was a glorious demonstration of the quirky and indomitable spirit that made the Castle what it was. When The Magic Goes Silent - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message from Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com What would you do if you were on stage and suddenly you could no longer hear your music? The sounds of the people's voices does not make sense to you any longer. You see movement from people talking but you cannot hear anything coming out. Your balance is a bit thrown off kilter and the enjoyment of the applause from the crowd, you no longer can understand, hear or even see in the stage lights? Would you be terrified? Would you no longer know how to perform your magic? Would you give up? These are the exact thoughts that went through my head many years ago when I got started in magic. These are also the issues that some magicians face each time they hit the stage and perform. How or why? Well this is often the reality of the world of the deaf or hard of hearing performer. "I.....I am a deaf magician!" There. I said it. That simple 5 word sentence for me was the hardest thing I had ever had to personally say to myself in the 38 years I have been on this earth. It was me trying to get a grip on the fact that I am a deaf person and an understanding that it was OK for me to be so. I am a man who is probably about 60-65% deaf in both ears. I wear hearing aids in the only hopes to hear even the remotest sounds that help me to speak well and to hear enough of the world around me. Even with these aids, my hearing will never be even close to normal. There are sounds I will never hear again in my lifetime, such as the sound of crickets at night. I do not tell you this to feel sorry for me because I personally do not feel sorry for myself. Instead, I felt the need to share with you the story of perseverance, strength and determination that so many deaf and handicapped magicians face each day to do what we do. When so many of us take things for granted, these folks show us all that true magic really does exist. I struggled with being hard of hearing and deaf for the longest time. I was in my 20's before I even did anything to try and help myself by going to an audiologist. I just felt so lost, confused and angry. Angry that I could not be like everyone else or that I had to give up the things I enjoyed so much .. performing magic. But I found comfort in the magic that I did. That was my safe haven. When I performed I was no longer deaf. I forgot everything and just became at peace with what I was doing. I had so many folks tell me that I cannot and should not be able to do what I do. Many telling me to not go on stage or not perform because it would simply be way too hard for me. These folks were not being mean but were just trying to protect me. But what I realized is that the only enemy I ever had was MYSELF. I was my biggest fear. I was the only one preventing myself from being a magician. I was the only one preventing me from experiencing the joy of performing for people. I am happy and proud to say that I have been a magician now for well over 23 years. Magic is not something I want to do. No.. For me... Magic is something I HAVE to do. If I never got paid a single dime to perform magic, I would still be out there doing it. Every time I am out on that stage, I am proving to myself that I can do it and that I have done it. It reminds me of just how far I have come and how much I have overcome to do what I love. It is not always easy, as I have had to adapt my show to be able to hear my music, make my cues and adapt the show to be able to do it well. But I tell you all of this because I think we as magicians take being a magician for granted sometimes. We do not realize just how much an honor it is to call yourself a magician. I take pride in the fact that I can do magic and that I have this gift to make people smile and forget about their problems. Even though I am deaf, it does not mean I stop living my life on my terms. It does not ever mean that I only give 80% effort just because I am tired or having a bad day or feeling sorry for myself. If you are a professional and if you love magic as much as I do, then give 100% all of the time every day. Take your magic seriously and love what you do. Be grateful for what has been given to you. Use your magic to better yourself and others around you. Magic has literally changed my life. It gave me skills and confidence I thought I would never have. This is my story and I thank you all for allowing me to share it with you. I hope you use it to inspire yourself that no matter what you face in life, there is nothing that cannot be overcome with a little hard work and a bit of magic. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. PRODUCTS: - I am very proud to release my newest E-Book "Encore! Creativity in the Art of Magic!". It is a 21 page E-book based off my full lecture by the same title. This E-Book is about learning how to be creative, think creatively and how to apply direct exercises and techniques to allow your own creativity to grow with the magic that you perform. Every single person possesses the ability to be creative. These notes teach you direct techniques and exercises that you can use to unlock the doors to your own creativity. I discuss the reasoning behind why creativity is so important, why people have a hard time being creative and how to break down those barriers. I then go on to show you a few brainstorming techniques (derived from also being an artist) and walk you through how these techniques can be used as creativity tools. A wealth of information is shared that anyone can freely apply immediately to the magic that you do. You can order directly by going to the "Encore!" page at: http://www.magicenhancer.com/Encore.html - I am also still excited to be offering my first E-Book, "Tips and Techniques on the Chair Suspension". This has been doing very well and remains one of the only books that really covers off on so much information, tips, techniques and safety tips on the presentation of this fine illusion. You can order this e-book directly by going to: http://www.magicenhancer.com/ChairSuspension.html -------------------------------------------- 8. Entertaining On The Ocean #30 - Paul Romhany -------------------------------------------- Message from Paul Romhany Life On The High Seas This month Natalie and I are on The Voyager of the Seas. As we got on the ship, Las Vegas magician Charlie Frye got off. We didn't get to meet up which was a shame, however I did manage to pluck one of his playing cards off the curtain during my rehearsal .... if you are reading this Charlie I have your King of Diamonds if you want it back:) It is always a pleasure to get on a ship after an act has been on that your admire and hear wonderful things about them. Everybody spoke very highly of Charlie and his lovely wife, which is one of the reasons they are one of the busiest acts in show business. The reason they hire Charlie Frye and myself is because we can perform our act without any speaking, and for the European market that is very important. The majority of passengers do not speak any English so they need acts that are truly international and can play to over 30 different nationalities, not an easy task. I hope I can get to an internet station to upload photos of our journey on my weekly BLOG, so be sure to check it out, the link is below. One thing that never gets any easier is the travel. I am pleased to report that the airlines did NOT lose our luggage this time which was a bonus, but the flight really did knock us out. We travelled from New Brunswick in Canada to Montreal, then on to Heathrow and finally over to Barcelona. I had to work the night I arrived on the ship which was not easy as show times were 10 pm and 11.30 pm. I spent all day today sleeping trying to catch up and get my body clock in order. In most cases we are only on a ship for 4 or 5 days then back home or off to another ship. We are actually on this ship for five weeks which makes it a little easier getting our body clocks adjusted. A Leak You didn't hear it from me ... or maybe you did. A brand new book is almost finished that EVERY Magician is going to want to get a copy of. I believe it will be released some time end of July. If you have a business card you will want this amazing book that comes with a CD ROM. There are over 18 different magicians who have released their PET effects with business cards. I will keep you informed once I know more Magic New Zealand Ezine readers will be THE FIRST to know and THE FIRST to get a copy of the book, I have this direct from the horse's mouth ...
