The World Premiere Of "PAZZAZ! -------------------------------------------- Message from Dale Salwak (US) Never have I felt prouder to know Milt Larsen than on Friday night, June 13th, when I joined Amos Levkovitch, Mike Elkan, Gary Grayson and Jack & Dove Goldfinger at the world premiere of "PAZZAZ! The Musical" starring Dale Kristien, Adam Wylie, Joey D'Auria and Joshua Finkel. Along with Arlene Larsen (Executive Co-Producer), Richard M. Sherman and Joseph Hoffman (and close to 100 others), Milt has brought to the stage his dream child of fifty years --  the story of the turn-of-the-century Broadway producers Joe Weber and Lew Fields. The full scale production is so good, so entertaining, so well-written and designed, that I sincerely hope it will catch on, find a buyer, and be brought to audiences across the country. Arlene Larsen designed the more than 150 gorgeous costumes; Richard Allen orchestrated the arrangements and directed the l6-piece orchestra and 11-member pit chorus; Dale Hindman directed the show. The show will roll on to Santa Barbara the weekend of June 20th - and from there it has a wide open future. For tour booking information, contact Terry Hill and Associates (760/674-0540) and be sure to visit the Magic Castle web site for more information. -------------------------------------------- 4. It was incredible - PAZZAZZ! The Musical -------------------------------------------- Message from Amos Levkovitch We watched last night the first full run of "PAZZAZZ! The Musical". It was incredible. Probably the best musical you will ever see! The delightful story of the play will touch your heart. The music and the lyrics will warm your heart. So are the beautiful scenery and the breath taking 100 or so costumes. The show features an impressive lineup of Theater and TV stars as Dale Christien from /Phantom of the Opera/Adam Wylie who played the Tin man etc. The musical is the brainchild of two entertainment icons; both have been honored with stars on Hollywood boulevard "Walk of Fame" and are best friends for many years: Magic Castle founder, "Its Magic" producer, and television writer Milt Larsen. And multiple Oscar award winner, screenplays and songs creator of 36 Disney films, the legendary Richard Sherman. The play was directed and choreographed by Greg Hinrichsen and John Vaughan. The incredible costumes where designed and made by the mega talented Arlene Larsen (who also co-produced the musical.) The beautiful set was designed by Joseph Hoffman. Dale Hindman is the Technical Director and the Production Manager. And the live music was directed and conducted by Richard Allen. The dates are 20, 21 & 23 at the new Granada Performing Arts Center in Santa Barbara, California. Women In Boxes -------------------------------------------- Message from Nick Lewin (US) 'Women in Boxes.' The documentary for magicians and their partners. June 19th was the debut of the new magical documentary 'Women in Boxes' as part of the tenth annual CineVegas film festival in Las Vegas. It is a wonderful glimpse into the private life and public persona of some of the great female assistants who are such an integral part of the success of their magical partnerships. 'Women in Boxes' was co-directed by Phil Noyes and Harry Pallenberg, under the guidance of Blaire Baron Larsen. Blaire is married to Dante Larsen, or as she put it during the brief Q & A session; "I married into magic!" During her wedding ceremony she noticed the vibrant, larger than life group of woman wearing turbans and realized these were the people she wanted to hang out with! I loved that quote. The documentary is a blend of fascinating archival footage and contemporary interviews. To anyone like myself who has grown up in magic it was pure delight to take this little walk down memory lane. Deanna and Luna Shimada, Pam Thompson, Jan and Stacy Jones, Carole Roy, Gaye Blackstone, Coral Reveen, Irene Larsen, Nani Darnell, Tammy Calvert, Moi Yo Miller, Monique Dimmare, Cathy Daniel, Francis Willard and Dove were among those specially featured in the movie. They had a dedication and understanding that was as feisty as it was touching. The unspoken bond between the various 'boxed women' was implicit and gave a fabulous insight into the inherently sexist world of magic. In a year when the USA came so close to having a female presidential candidate (indeed I am none to sure Hillary will be ready to totally concede until after the inauguration!) this was a rare glimpse of a group of women who all looked smart enough to handle the finances, politics and day to day business of running a country and still find time to feed the doves and make up their husband's torn and restored newspapers. Eugene Burger and Teller (or should I say perhaps Teller) added some very insightful commentaries and Chuck Jones, Goldfinger and Johnny Thompson amongst others completed the job of connecting the dots to illustrate how a successful dyadic really works in the magic world. When you have a chance to see this documentary jump at it, I suspect for many their first chance of viewing 'Women in Boxes' will be on DVD. The DVD extras should bring the added excitement of extra interview footage and archival goodies for your entertainment pleasure and not much will be missing from the cinema presentation. There was a nice group of magicians in attendance for the premier including; Princess Irene accompanied by the ever-dapper Siegfried, Peter and Coral Reveen, John Daniel, James Dimmare and many others who were featured in the documentary. The film received an enthusiastic response from all those present and should become an instant classic, in the all too rare, field of videos that feature magic's personalities and not just the tricks. On a personal level, I would like to add that on the basis of the hilarious onscreen interviews with Pam and Johnny Thompson some bright executive should come up with a reality show along his lines of 'Life with the Tomsoni's.' They are the funniest husband and wife team since George and Gracie! -------------------------------------------- 7. Remarkable Magic #55 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message from Nick Lewin (US) As I mentioned last week I was recently highly impressed by Andrew Goldenhersh. Not just the performance but also the performer himself. Andrew has a unique look and an equally unique way of looking at the art of performing magic. I suspect Andrew is becoming a very successful magician who will help shape the future of our art form. While Goldenhersh specializes in performing in intimate settings he is also a highly skilled stand-up performer who performs really entertaining effects that gather momentum and has surprises galore. Nothing is forced or strained in the way that his material gets bigger and more visual as his show progresses. This is a show that is always commercial without ever ceasing to be art. There is a wonderfully direct and organic quality in the way Goldenhersh segues from sleight of hand to his almost barehanded production of two chickens. It is a nice to watch This is one performer who can emphasis his skill without appearing pompous or self-serving just by making the whole thing look like fun. Andrew has already been featured on an impressive array of television specials including 'Magic's Greatest Illusions', Lance Burton's 'Gorilla Magic' and was featured on the recent 'World Magic Awards' where he was also the recipient of the award for best close-up performer. With his distinctive look and style Andrew has been featured on enough magic specials that he has become a recognized celebrity on the streets of Japan China and Korea. I suspect that he will be achieving the same results in the United States before very long. It must be very rewarding to perform effects silently and break through that language barrier. This involves much more than not talking during a routine, it requires the ability to create a story entirely through images. It is then necessary to add the emotions and humor that bring the story to life. Close-up magic has a strong future now that 'Street Magic' has introduced it to the masses. There is a minimalistic quality with Andrew's use of props and a carefully honed deconstructionist approach to the structure of his routines. It is this kind of combination that could be a key to the next evolution of sleight of hand. I will be watching closely to see what Andrew Goldenhersh does next and where he takes his magic and where his magic takes him. Already he is a highly respected corporate performer and casino attraction. If Andrew can successfully balance his various skills, which also includes virtuoso guitar skills, we just might discover something new under the sun. Check out Andrews website at www.goldenhands.com As always send any bricks or bouquets to nicklewin1@mac.com -------------------------------------------- 8. Show and Prop Management - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message from Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com I have been talking lately with a good friend of mine, Trevor Lewis. Many of you may know Trevor as he has been an educator and teacher to me and others in the art of performing for children for many years. We got talking about show and prop management and I thought that some of the ideas we discussed might make for an interesting article. I hope that the ideas expressed here are of help to you or at least food for thought. If you are a magician and perform shows, then chances are you have props and you have to obviously transport them from gig to gig. The problem lies in how best do you do this and in what ways can you create systems that best work for you to prevent problems from happening at the events you perform at? I think many of us have had situations happen where we are in the middle of a routine and realize that the silk or sponge ball we need to finish the routine is in another case or you left it at home. There is nothing like this sudden mode of "panic" to get the creative juices flowing to try and get through the routine. However, so much of this can be avoided if you create some simple show and prop management systems and be conscious of using them consistently. Let's talk about a few ideas. - Trevor brought up a great point in our conversations. He suggested an obvious idea that so many of us forget about or do not think about. This is the notion that you should NEVER transfer props from one act or routine to the next. If you need a breakaway wand, sponge balls, silks or whatever... for goodness sake get one for each act. Once you start transferring items around, you are bound to lose or misplace something when you really need it most. - I also always make it a policy to pack up my show properly after every performance I do. Instead of tossing everything into a ditch basket and sorting out "at a later time", I get in the habit of packing it up properly after every event. This is not only a good habit, but is also a part of being a professional. It helps protect my equipment at all times and during transit. - If you properly place things away after every event you do, then this leads into my next point. I always want to be properly prepared to do a show at a moments notice and at any time. Simply stated, my show/s should be in a state where I am ready to go anytime I need to be. - One thing I also do is to place certain props and equipment in the same location or in the same case. I do not move things around or place things "wherever I can find room". If each item you have is in a particular spot, then it makes it very easy to locate anytime you need it. - One way of helping you to keep props for routines intact and ready, is to buy large zip lock bags or clear bags that can be sealed. This way you can place the props that you use for that routine and mark on the front the name of the routine. This way it is always kept together and makes for easy access. - One of the pitfalls so many of us run into with prop and show management is that we have so many cases that look exactly the same. How many of you reading this have ever picked up the wrong case thinking it was something else? Probably a lot of you. One way to avoid this seems quite obvious. Make sure you label every case in your show. Not only does this help you to get your stuff back if you leave something somewhere, but it helps you to be able to tell which case goes with what. You may use a label maker for this or even use colored stickers so that you also have a color coded system as well. Red can mean sound equipment or you can have colors to represent certain shows. - Find the right case for the right prop. By this I simply mean to protect the equipment you own. I have seen too many magicians just tossing props into bags or in a cardboard box. Take the time to find a case that works best for your props. Foam line them for added protection. It only costs you a small investment but will keep your props looking like new. - One of my biggest pet peeves in regards to prop management is the fact that too many magicians toss their props on the floor or into a box or bag during the performance. I have seen silks just thrown on the floor or a small box prop tossed aside to make room for something else. This to me is unprofessional. If you do not care for your props, then why should your audience care either? I hope some of these ideas have been of help to you. Certainly there are many more but this should give you a general idea of just some of the ways in which you can handle prop and show management effectively. Use these ideas and then adapt them to fit your needs. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. Darren Romeo Show Review -------------------------------------------- Message from Phil Temple (US) The Darren Romeo Show was in previews here in San Francisco for 10 days, then opened on June 10th at the Post Street Theatre. While I think Darren has great possibilities, the reviewer didn't agree with me - or the audience the night we saw the show. 'A Mixed Bag Of Tricks From Darren Romeo" by Robert Hurwitt Chronicle Theater Critic "I try to make it as intimate as possible," magician and crooner Darren Romeo says of his act as he selects the first of the evening's several volunteers. Maybe it passes for intimate in Las Vegas, where Siegfried & Roy caught his act and took Romeo under their wing. At the Post Street Theater, where "Darren Romeo: The Voice of Magic" opened Tuesday, it's more like a sensory overload onslaught of very loud recorded music, hyperactive spotlights, look-at-me eagerness and a voice amped several decibels too high. Oh, and some truly amazing magic tricks. Romeo and his longtime "leading lady" (17 years so far), Kristy Michelsen (who also belts out Alanis Morrissette's "Uninvited"), perform some of the great classics of magic with eye-popping speed and some sly reversals. SHE levitates HIM. She also skewers him on a sword, crawls through his belly and saws him in half. The razzmatazz undercuts the magic, though. The songs don't help. The selections - from "Barnum," Bobby Darren, Billy Joel, "The Fantasticks," "Dr. Doolittle," "Jesus Christ Superstar," and a few originals - are uninteresting and bombastically arranged (Pat Caddick is the musical director). Romeo has a decent voice but isn't much of a stylist. Sarah Scherger's showgirl choreography for eye-candy dancers (the capable Mariko Takahasi and Terrin Kelly) is just another distraction. The only intimate moment on opening night came when Romeo introduced Siegfried Fischbacher and a fragile-looking Roy Horn - still recuperating from his tiger mauling five years ago - seated in the audience. For that instant, the view of showbiz packaging lifted and a connection was formed. UPSIDE: Eye-boggling magic tricks. DOWNSIDE: Overmiked, oversold and over packaged. Some of what works in Vegas should stay in Vegas" Through July 13. Post Street Theater. 80 minutes. Tickets $40 - $65. -------------------------------------------- 10. Research Project On Leg Choppers -------------------------------------------- Message from Julie Sobanski - jlsobanski@aol.com I'm working on a project about leg choppers and hoping that you can help. My whole interest in leg choppers started with the attached photo. While searching for photos of female magicians, for my book, I came across this magazine clipping. The quirky prop caught my eye. I remember seeing the photo of John Daniel and Irene in Owens catalog, the one with her leg in a chopper. But this one is different, with the little platform for her foot. That's what makes it a leg chopper. Just for fun, I did a little digging and searing and found all sorts of clues. The more I found, the more interesting the search became. Goodliffe details the leg chopper in his book Simply Wizard from 1946. Tubby Allison manufactured the original model for Star Magical Mfg. Co. and Edward Maurice had the idea of the small platform. Goodliffe debuted the leg chopper at a convention in Chicago and then sold it to Joe Berg. Not quite sure what happened next? I've seen ads from Merv Taylor and Max Holden for the leg chopper, but only selling one. Know anything about the leg chopper? Also trying to find out if it was ever manufactured in the states? I started thinking of the different variations of guillotine/head choppers. Kind of a time line of choppers. Am I missing any categories? Guillotine Giant Guillotine Will Rock Guillotine Head Chopper Extended Blade Chopper Abbotts Chinese/Oriental Chopper Wrist Chopper Double Wrist Chopper French Arm Chopper Finger Chopper Cigarette Chopper Disecto Do you know someone who performed the leg chopper? Also looking for photo of the leg chopper. Any information or a push in a direction, is always greatly appreciated. All my best. This is the biggest magic contest dedicated to the belief that magic must be enjoyed by real people, not just other magicians! For that purpose, the venue is one of the city's most popular attractions, attendance is open to the public, and the performers are evaluated by a panel of Celebrity Judges whose knowledge extends far beyond the world of magic; past judges have included respected media personalities and award-winning directors from Chicago's thriving theatre community. The Navy Pier audience will be enthusiastic. Attention from the press is expected. And you could go home with a gorgeous handmade ceremonial wand and a certificate that names you as this year's champion! All the info is at MagicalChicago.com. Well I I'm Just Got This Cancer Thing I'm Battling -------------------------------------------- Message from Gene McCarty (NZ) I just enjoyed a lengthy call to Roger Klause. We laughed about Chuck Smith, legendary like Roger and all the gags they used to play on a 13 year old wanna-be magician played by me. Alan he sounded terrific. Full of energy. The only mention of the cancer was that he, "Well I I'm just got this cancer thing I'm battling." Or words to that affect. But Roger sounded like he always has. Which is as good as we're apt to find in this world. -------------------------------------------- 14. British Ring Convention -------------------------------------------- Message from Bob Hayden PRO to the British Ring Convention News 18th June Two of the best of this country's comedy magicians have been added to the list of artistes who will be appearing at Eastbourne. They are John Archer and Mel Mellors. John Archer is recognised as a stand-up Comedy magician with a penchant for the visual pun and full-on audience combat with a mentalist slant. He attacks the audience with the skill and panache of a rampant bull and takes them on a roller-coaster ride of idiotic sight gags and baffling magic. The genesis of John's interest in magic started in 1981 when he was studying for a BA Honours degree in Industrial Design. He became noticed after teaming up with fellow member of the Middlesborough Circle of Magicians Mike Smith in an act called Archini & Smith winning the 'Alistair Wand' in the Ring's stage competition in 1995. Since becoming a solo full time entertainer in 1996, John's newfound career has never faltered. Over the years he has had several prestigious awards conferred upon him. Be prepared to rock with laughter in your seats when John Archer emcees the Thursday Night Show. Mel Mellors is just a hilarious comedy performer. He is a comedy magician with an unbelievably sharp wit. His act is completely original with a unique combination of intrigue and comedy. It is alive with action, laughter and mental challenges you just won't believe. As one of his client's confirmed 'The content and balance of your programme was judged to perfection, the mix keeping everybody alert. Had you chosen to entertain until breakfast the audience would have remained totally entranced'. Mel Mellors is just one bundle of fun. You will love him. 'Magic in the Corporate World' is the title of the lecture to be given by Bill Hertz. It is a lecture that will be immediately followed by a practical workshop. Bill is probably the most successful performing magician and Agent in magic booking all the great magicians including David Copperfield, Lance Burton, Mac King and many others for his numerous corporate clients. At the age of 5 when most children were reading comic books, Bill was learning to shuffle a pack of cards with one hand. His distinctive mix of comedy and magic has been applauded throughout the North American, European and Asian continents. As a theatrical consultant Bill designs and creates special effects for Broadway shows, major motion pictures and television commercials. Bill's performances are always custom-tailored to the particular audience, his slick sleight of hand integrating audience participation, humour and unforgettable wizardry are what ensures every event is truly special. As George Ort of the AT&T Telecommunications Corporation says of Bill 'You are a fabulous magician and entertainer. Your ability to charm, surprise, and overwhelm the audience with your magic is without equal. It is no wonder that everyone present now wants to know how to get in touch with you' Bill Hertz's lecture and workshop will be hugely valuable to every working magician. Ripped Off Magic Dealers -------------------------------------------- Message from Keith Garrett (NZ) Magic Dealers Hi everyone, have you ever been ripped off? It doesn't feel good. I know that there is a lot of magic dealers reading this right now and wondering or thinking that's not me and good on you, but what is your customer saying about you, have you ever asked? The first rule of selling used to be the customer was ALWAYS RIGHT. I hope it's just not me that is feeling things have changed especially in the magic world where we are ripping other magicians off from shady deals or not delivering what they have said we would. Don't get me wrong there are some really great dealers out there and I can name a few of them but I won't this week, that have bent over backwards to make things right or correct an error I applaud them, but I am just saying if you are not happy, it is time to say something and get some answers, love to hear you feed back.
