Magic New Zealand will be published next week but that will be the LAST ISSUE until we return from the States 19th August. Remember if you have any magic news drop me a line: AW@Alan-Watson.com -------------------------------------------- 2. Good News - I Have Spoken With Losander -------------------------------------------- Message from George Schindler Dean of the Society of American Magicians Good News - I have spoken with Losander and the good news is that the Magic fraternity has raised enough money for the initial treatment tomorrow morning. He will still need additional funds and is very thankful to the many friends in magic who have helped but more is need for follow up visits etc. -------------------------------------------- 3. Inka Magic - Jeff McBride -------------------------------------------- Message from Jeff McBride (US) Inka Magic A few months ago, I was invited to represent the United States at an international magic event named Inka magic. (yes, Inka is the old spelling) Part of the tour was a special adventure to the spiritual center of Peru, the city of Cusco. Our hosts Jholu and Juan Carlos did a fantastic job of arranging this once-in-a-lifetime experience. The Lost City Of The Incas Machu Picchu is enveloped in an eternal aura of mysticism. Its temples convey ideals of the amazing empire which built them. It is also a place which takes us on a journey to the spirit of serenity, and to our eternal connection with the magic of the Incas. I was one of thirteen magicians that made the journey from Lima to Cusco, and then boarded a mountain train running along the Urubamba river, to go high up into the awe-inspiring Andes. This was the "easy way to travel." Many of the hard-core pilgrims hoof it, taking the 88 km Inca trail from Cusco all the way up. It takes four days. "Machu Picchu" means Young Mountain. For over four hundred years, the Incas built an empire, and this was one of their most sacred cities. Suddenly, all the inhabitants vanished, and no one will ever know why. Scientists are still puzzling over this. The "Mystic 13" Our small band of magicians was comprised of some of the top performers from all over South America and the USA. I was joined by my friends Michael Ammar and Costya Kimlat. We bonded not only because of our shared interest in magic, but also our passion for the mythology and our eagerness to explore the rich history of Peru. Our merry band of magical adventure-seekers took every opportunity to perform street magic for the local villagers and guides. There happened to be a film crew doing a documentary on sacred sites in Peru. We ran into this film crew a number of times during our travels, so they decided to do a feature story on us! The day after our Machu Picchu expedition, we journeyed to Cusco, which is known as the "navel of the world." Cusco was the center of the Inca empire. Many of the ancient rituals and traditions are still carried on there. As good fortune would have it, we had the opportunity to witness a recreation of perhaps the most ancient and sacred festival of the Incas, "Intiraymi," which means the Festival of the Sun. Over ten thousand villagers and tourists gathered on the mountainside just outside of the city. In the center of a large field, hundreds of colorfully garbed drummers, dancers, flautists and conch players heralded the arrival of The Inca. This god-man appeared on a throne of gold and was carried to a central pyramid, where he re-enacted the ancient rituals of the returning sun. This re-enactment also reinforces the people's connection to the natural world and sources of life. Inka Magic Convention This is the largest magic event in Peru. I was astonished by the high quality of the organization and hospitality. I have been attending magic conventions since 1970, and this event was one of the best I have ever attended. It might have something to do with the amazing talent of the South American magicians, or maybe it was the energy of all the pilgrims that had traveled so far to experience the magic of Peru. The Latin American close-up card magicians rocked my world. Among them, Luis Otero is a true star in the world of card magic. I spent many hours studying his techniques and hope to share them with you the next time we meet. I was most impressed with the quality of the "children's shows." One of the main events was a show comprised of performances by many of the top children's entertainers in South America. They take this kid-stuff very seriously! I was amazed to see full on theatrical productions with lighting, music, dance, puppetry and quick-change. There is a sophisticated aesthetic that permeates this form of "young adult theater," that has yet to be seen in other areas of the world. Later this year, the largest magic event in South America, FLASOMA, will be held in Peru. I hope to return if I can arrange my tour. -------------------------------------------- 4. Best Regards, The HKIMF Organizing Committee / Eddy International Holdings Ltd Eddy Au (President) -------------------------------------------- 5. Why Top Level Magicians Go On A Talent Show? -------------------------------------------- Message from Brendan Montanner (Aust) I can't see why these top level magicians would down grade themselves to go on a talent show? The Pendragons and Kevin James as they are top of the league! Why would they go on a show and take a risk of being buzzed off? Anyway that is my opinion. -------------------------------------------- 6. Women In Boxes Query -------------------------------------------- Message from Steve Pradell (Alaska) In response to the following inquiry in your latest ezine, Mr. Gray should begin by going to the following website: http://womeninboxes.com/ -------------------------------------------- 7. Remarkable Magic #59 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message from Nick Lewin (US) Glenn Falkenstein: a man who reads minds. I am currently cruising to the end of the world. To be more exact I am at the very tip of Norway getting ready to sail to the polar ice caps. Gorgeous countryside, amazing views, incredible views but some of the most erratic Internet spots in the world so I hope this column finds its way to New Zealand! Due to some miscalculation on the part of the cruise line I am onboard with a mindreader. Not the best of bookings given all the psychic stuff I feature in my show these days but a true joy as far as good company goes. The name of my fellow entertainer is Marc Paul and although I haven't seen his show yet I suspect he will be outstanding. Sitting drinking Lattes, we discussed mindreading and mindreaders for hours. When I asked him what had really inspired him to specialize in this aspect of our art he replied; "Glenn Falkenstein, because he really just looks like he is doing what you would do if you really could read minds." I thought this was a great answer and it took my memory back to the first time I had ever watched Glenn work. I remembered how very impressed I had been at the way he just snapped out answers to questions in a truly dynamic manner. I watched Glenn work many times when I arrived in the States and I can honestly say that he really fooled me more than any other act I saw. I was blissfully innocent at the time to the subtleties of a blindfold Q & A act and I gasped right along with the civilians, as the act truly seemed to peer into people's minds. He just got right on with it and did what people wanted to see him do. Many years later I had the opportunity to work with Ross Johnson and observe his Q & A from the metaphorical wings. Every show I got the same charge watching him go about his business. He would sometimes laughingly refer to himself as a one-trick pony. It is a hell of a trick convincing people you can read minds. Quite a different thing to performing tricks that may or may not be achieved by 'unearthly means!' By the strangest of coincidences Susan and I were present at Glenn's marriage to Frances Willard in Las Vegas. It isn't that we were close friends, it just sort of happened! However I was delighted to be able to attend as I had become a huge fan of the way Frances and Glenn had reinvented his show with their classic performance of the spirit cabinet. It wasn't easy to change or top Glenn's act but this was a match made in heaven. Peanut butter and jelly good! In the documentary 'Women in Boxes' (I must have really enjoyed the film because I keep quoting it!) It was fascinating listening to Frances talking about her multi-generational life in the magic world. I suspect that many other people, just like me, would have loved to have heard her talk in a little more depth about her life. I hope there are plenty of deleted scenes on the DVD. I have always been astounded and more than a little outraged at the cavalier manner in which some magicians dismiss mindreaders as if there is something not quite fair about their goals and means. I suspect there is more than a little jealousy about the reaction they achieve and the strong hint of the mysterious that they bring to the audience. We are meant to fool them but it is cheating to make them believe us seems to sum up the mind-set of these characters. I have frequently seen magicians reveal 'mindreaders' secrets in a casual and vindictive manner. They would never do that with an illusionist or sleight of hand performer. OK we won't get into the Valentino thing here-that's a whole other story. The bastard. Yesterday while sitting, sipping and chatting with Marc Paul it took me back into an earlier stage of my magic career and the simple pleasure of watching Glenn just get on with it and read minds. It is a feeling and a memory that I treasure. So I guess this column goes out to Glenn and Frances one of the classiest couples ever to mess with an audiences mind! As always send any bricks or bouquets to nicklewin@earthlink.net and check out my website at http://www.NickLewin.com -------------------------------------------- 8. YOU Are The Magic... Always - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message from Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com Here is an interesting thought that has crossed my mind lately. It is just something I have always done but I never stopped to think about just how very important I feel it really is. It is a very simple statement and one I will try and define for you. "You are the magic...always!" What do I mean by that and what is my point exactly? Allow me to explain if I may. First, being a magician is an honor and a privilege and this is something that I feel everyone should embrace and remember. Not everyone can be a magician and not everyone gets the chance to perform magic. To call yourself a magician is something special and not to be taken lightly as some folks do. If I want the art form of magic to be taken seriously, then I first must take it seriously myself. With this stated, I see so many performers who basically turn it on and turn it off. What I mean is that once the show is over, they stop being a magician. To me if you say you are a magician, then you should be one at all times. Being a magician should not be about turning it on when you want and off when you want. With this in mind, how do you personally seek opportunities to share your magic even when it is not a paid gig? Some of you may simply choose not to perform unless paid. That is your personal choice. I prefer to take an opposite approach. If I say I am a magician, then I seek opportunities to share my magic with anyone I can share it with. I always keep on me several things at all times no matter what I am wearing or where I may be going. These are a deck of cards (set up with a few gaffs), rubber bands and my business cards in a business card case. I always have these on me and it has just become habit for me to bring them with me just like it would be putting shoes on in the morning. I do this because I am a magician and as a magician I should be able to perform anything at any time whether someone asks me or if the opportunity presents itself. How many times have you been somewhere (a non gig) and someone found out you were a magician? Probably a lot of you. Now how many of you stopped to talk to the person and ask if they would like to see something? Maybe not as many of you as people may think. Some folks are 1) not prepared to perform anything 2) feel they are not getting paid so why perform or 3) just too tired or busy to give the person the time. I always make the time, I always am prepared and I am never too busy to promote magic. This does not mean you need or should do a full 10 minute show. It simply means showing the person a simple little bit of magic that may only be 1 minute. But it is that 1 minute that the person will remember. There are many chances to be able to perform magic and it does not always have to be when someone asks you. Now this does not mean forcing yourself on someone. It simply means seeking opportunities to show your magic when those opportunities present themselves. Just last week I was standing in line at a store and a child in front started crying. I did a simple 30 second magic trick. The child stopped crying and smiled and the mom thanked me for it. 30 seconds out of my day was nothing compared to the feelings my magic generated for those few people. It is also a wonderful opportunity to market yourself. The person is going to remember the experience you created for them and giving them a business card at the end helps them to remember you and the experience. Perhaps the person was having a bad day and your bit of generosity really helped. Perhaps you then even get a paid gig from this person somewhere down the road. To me, this little time out of your day is a small price to pay for such great rewards. Besides we are magicians and we should be one always. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. Broken Wand - Paul Dalton - Australia -------------------------------------------- Message forwarded on by Brendan Montanner (Aust) A Tribute To A Friend Sad Passing Of A Great Entertainer & Gentleman One of Australia's great International Variety Entertainers took his final 'bows' a few nights ago at Mona Vale Hospital. Paul Dalton, known to many in the profession as 'Mr. Magic,' quietly passed away in his sleep at the great age of 95years. Paul's passing brings down the curtain on a colourful and exciting era of performing arts in Australia when great theatres such as the 'Tivoli' flourished. He was part of the variety shows, the songs and the great events that shaped our times. He will be sadly missed by many, not only for his stage performances, but for his humanity, for he was one of the nicest people one could ever wish to meet. Paul was a dapper man of great talent with a wonderful sense of humour. We first met in the early 70s at North Sydney Leagues Club. It was a daytime gig and I fondly recall sharing a dressing room with him and watching in amazement as he set about arranging his magic props and transforming himself into the character of Charlie Chaplin for his performance. When that time came, I took up a position in the wings and marvelled at how slick and entertaining his presentation was. I was fortunate to be watching an act that had been worked in all the great theatres of Europe and as a young entertainer I remembered thinking as he walked off stage to deafening applause, "Oh yes, this is what variety entertainment is all about." It was also the start of a friendship that has lasted for almost 40 years and I consider it a privilege to have known him. Paul shared 64 years of his wonderful life with wife Bronwyn who survives him. Theirs was a match made in heaven. Funeral arrangements are as follows. 9.45am at Northern Suburbs Crematorium, 199 Delhi Road, Sydney on Thursday 3rd July. Let's all get together and give this special man of the theatre a final 'standing ovation.' Thanks Paul for sharing your years with me. My life is richer for having known you! Your friend, Dee. He will be taking a workshop on Magic and Ventriloquism, this will feature many of his tested routines from his Anti bullying Road show called You've Got The Power! www.elgregoe.trustpower.co.nz This show has now been seen by over half a million students. Elgregoe believes adding some magic to your vent routine brings another element of fun and interaction with your audience. A real highlight at the convention will be a guest Terry Fator winner of Americas Got Talent - currently screening in New Zealand on Prime TV with the final on Monday night. Terry takes 1st prize and the one million dollars. Here is a clip from The Wall Street Journal: Terry Fator winner of Americas Got Talent won the one million dollar prize and is currently performing at the Hilton Las Vegas. In May he signed a 100 million dollar, 5 year deal to headline at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas beginning February 14th. This fall the vent will have the last laugh on those doubting his ability to make it in big time. He is publishing a book called Whose The Dummy Now! -------------------------------------------- 12. The Castle Of Magic Christchurch Closes Its Doors -------------------------------------------- Message from Mike Hines (NZ) It is with great sadness that after over 20 years trading, the Castle of Magic based in Christchurch has had to close its doors. The business has changed hands a number of times over the years having originally been opened by Greg Britt (Elgregoe), the business was also run by Ian Clark (Mr Robert), Tony Shipley and for the past three years by myself Mike Hines (Mike Houston). A big thank you to everyone who has supported us over the years and while the doors have closed, the website www.themagicshop.co.nz will still continue to trade and have a much greater focus placed on it. In addition there is a new face that will be running the website, Stacey Morrell, a close-up specialist and member of the Canterbury Society of Magicians. So please continue supporting your local magic dealer and who knows what may happen in the future. -------------------------------------------- 13. Joshua Jay New Book On Magic For The Public -------------------------------------------- Message from Tom Craven (US) Joshua Jay has come out with a new book on magic for the public. He will be touring the country to do book signings at various bookstores. He is interested in doing a few lectures while he's out there. But watch for him on many TV programs like Good morning America, Ellen, Live with Regis, etc. The proposed cities that the publisher wants to cover is as follows: Ann Arbor, Atlanta, Chicago, Cleveland, Cincinnatti, Dayton, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, NYC, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Portland, San Francisco, Seattle, and Toronto. At this point we think the publisher is going to provide his lodging in each city, so that cuts out that expense for magic clubs. If any club in the above mentioned cities are interested in a lecture contact me for details, as I am the lecture coordinator for this tour. The proposed tour will start in early to mid November, and conclude in NYC on or about Dec, 4 or 5. -------------------------------------------- 15. Elio Simonetti On The ABC -------------------------------------------- Message from Elio Simonetti (Aust) Eva and I just finished a week of performances in Mildura. That's in North East Victoria. We caught up with the magicians there and it was great to see them. The local ABC Radio Station heard that we were in town and invited us for a chat. I recorded an audio interview which was played on air Thursday morning. The reporter insisted that I show her some magic. I came unprepared so Eva dashed to the local supermarket and bought two decks of cards. The impromptu (to the fullest extent of the word) tricks were filmed and the result can be seen online at: http://www.abc.net.au/local/stories/2008/07/02/2292616.htm?site=milduraswanhill -------------------------------------------- 16.
