Message from Gilles Mageux

Are very sad to report.....

Christian Fectner just passed away after a long period of illnes at the age of 64, to-day.

Another great magic legend is gone and will be a huge loss for the magic community.

Well known French movie producer, his name is known to the magicians around the world. Since his 1979 FISM 1st prizes (Grand illusions and invention), he has been an icon in magic,. He had been a prolific inventor, collector, historian and writer of many great books.

Such a good friend will be missed.

Whaley's Who in Magic

Fechner, Christian
(Agen, Lot et Garonne, France: 1944- ) Professional film producer in France since c1975, producing 34 films including Camille Claudel (1989).

Learned magic at age 12 from "Kle-ro", a side-show fair magician. Semi-pro illusionist since age 17, including some time with circus. 1979 AFAP Bronze Medal. 1979 FISM 1st prize in grand illusions (using his own Bar Stool Levitation) & 1st prize in invention (Vanishing TV). Since then he has performed on stage only 4 times, preferring to invent & produce magic. 1981 AMA Award of Merit.

A major magic collector with 5,000 books (2,000+ in French), 500 posters, props, & automata -- all displayed in his castle in Bordeaux.

Prolific inventor of illusions. In 1981 invented the famous version of the Floating Piano that he gave to Norm Nielsen in 1982. Wrote Soirées Fantastiques (2 vols, 1988). A bio sketch by Amy Stevens is in the Winter 1990/91 Stevens catalog.

NOTE: Ads for the Gamolo Levitation that used a photo of Fechner doing his Bar Stool Levitation falsely imply that these two effects & methods are the same. (Mad Magic #29)
