Since then, the Gustafson's have performed at trade shows and in theaters and hotels in England, Canada, Monte Carlo, Singapore, the Caribbean, and 40 of the 50 United States, and over the years have shared the stage with George Burns, Joan Rivers, Johnny Mathis, Buddy Greco, and other stars. Remarkable Magic #76 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message from Nick Lewin (US) Back to the Cellar! Since my column last week about the Magic Cellar in San Francisco I have received quite a few emails from other magicians who remember it just as fondly as do I. My wife (who is much better than me, at these kind of details) assures me that the paycheck was either $105 or $110. Whichever the figure, it was very welcome at the time. Al Doty was kind enough to remind me of some of the other 'regulars' who worked there, I can't believe I forgot to mention Vic Kirk, Frank Shields, Arthur Murata and the inimitable Rich Morata. It really was a wonderful bunch of people. One amazing thing that occurred in connection with the cellar was the accidental discovery of the entire Carter the Great show. This included all those wonderful posters and lobby cards that now adorn so many magicians' walls. I was going to mention the discovery in this second part of my column but I thank Dan Solo for writing to me and filling in some details that I either didn't know or had forgotten. Turk Murphy and his brother had a collectible car stored in a private garage and due to an unexpected reverse maneuver discovered a secret room hidden behind a false wall in the garage. Inside the room were 60 or 70 large trunks containing the Carter show. The owner of the garage remembers them being left there by a magician in 1936 that died before he could collect them. The whole episode has the rather wonderful feel of a Nancy Drew or Enid Blyton novel! Since nobody had claimed them, the owner of the garage quite rightly assumed they were by this time his property. For $400 the ownership of the trunks changed hands once again and were moved to the basement of Turk Murphy's club. Thus was the Magic Cellar born. The trunks containing the props formed the seating for audience in the club while the props and posters adorned the rest of the club. While working at the Cellar a fine friendship evolved between Cedric Clute, who managed the club and myself. Along with our wives Susan and Judy we would leave the Magic Cellar after show time and drink Irish coffee with that ridiculously rich and thick cream that doesn't get sprayed from a can. Cedric and I shared a love of murder mystery and detective fiction and talked late into the night about the relative merits of Rex Stout and Agatha Christie. We never got bored, which was probably not the case for our respective wives. Cedric had an idea for 'Sleight of Crime,' a collection of short stories featuring magicians and detectives that he had collated over the years. We loved to discuss these stories, and eventually went on to write forwards and after-notes to each of them. What we didn't have was a publisher who shared our love of the project. That is where my manager came into play. My manager's name was Julian Portman, or as he was exclusively known, JP. He had recently made the move from theatrical agent to literary agent by selling a biography of Redd Foxx. The books final chapters were total fiction based on a séance I had performed to bring back the spirit of Lenny Bruce. Having run out of useable material the author, Richard X. Slattery (the X didn't stand for anything, but initials were very important in our circle) allowed his mind to run free with my séance idea to fill out his manuscript. JP pitched the idea of 'Sleight of Crime' to Regnery of Chicago and in a flash it was a done deal! The book was illustrated with the first ever glimpses of the Carter artwork and photos and released as a 'Quality Paper Back' which sold for the princely sum of $5, which in 1975 was a tidy sum for a paperback. It was a really beautifully produced book. We sold a hardback edition and two paperback editions of the book but sadly fame and fortune did not knock upon our doors. Making money with a book like this wasn't (and still isn't) much of a sure fire prospect. Years later I bumped into 'JP' and while gossiping about past times he said; "Yes, those were the years when my office was fronting for the CIA in an organized crime investigation!" Great-my career as performer and author languished due to hidden motives and intents. Such is life. Using Music Effectively - #99 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message from Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com How do you use music in your act? Do you have a dilemma of using lyrical music over non lyrical? How can music effectively be used to enhance any magic act or routine? In many ways music is a powerful way in which to increase entertainment value. I have actually done and used both lyrical and non lyrical based music. It really does depend upon what it is you are doing. When I use lyrical music, I usually am doing so to create a certain mood or convey a certain feeling. This is what I refer to as an "emotional response." No matter where you are in the world or what person you come across if you cannot even speak the language there is something you and that person will always share in common. That is emotions. Every single person feels emotions. We all feel happiness, sadness, anger, surprise etc. etc. Because of this, music can also help you to convey those emotions to your audience. Just like your cards are tools for your act, music can be as well. Music can be a manipulative tool. One thing I find happening too often is that people build their act and try and tack on the music afterwards. This is never a good idea. The music needs to be integrated and a part of what you do. If done well, the music and the magic combine to create a mood and an overall experience. With lyrical music, I try and find one where the words and the music itself convey the mood I am trying to express. It may also tie directly into my theme or into the character I am playing for that routine or act. This way my magic and the lyrical music go together to form a poetic style piece. In one manipulative act I do I talk about my childhood and about my own personal story about being deaf and growing up that way. It is about finding magic in the simplest of places and realizing that the world (even to a deaf child) can be a wonderful place. The manipulations I do as part of this act is done to "It's a Wonderful World". It just makes sense and ties in beautifully to what I want to have happen on stage. In this sense and instance, the lyrics tie in to the emotional response I am seeking and help to tie everything I am doing together. It helps me to achieve the entertainment value I am after. This does not mean I always have to use lyrical music. It simply means this is how I often will use it and the ways in which I feel are important if you are to use lyrical music in a manipulative act. Think about what the song is saying and the mood conveyed and make sure the act you are doing works well with it. It should fit like a glove. If you are not using lyrical music, then some of the same rules apply. You still must realize that the music is not something that should be just added to a routine or act after you have it all worked out. The music should be worked in from the start so that the music and what you do coincide with each other. The music also needs to fit the act. by this I simply mean the music needs to make sense to the action being portrayed. It also must fit your theme, style and character. If you are more modern in style and fast paced movement, then your music needs to fit this as well. If you are more classical in nature and smoother movements, then jazz style music may fit your best. Whatever music you find working best for you, remember that it needs to also have peaks and valleys. A good piece of music is like a good play. A play has ups and downs and fast times and slow times. It has conflict and resolution. Good music will have this also. If placed into an act, it can make your act flow much better and aid in the pacing. Too many magicians tend to go too fast and never give the audience a time to rest or to applaud you. Good music can be used to add these moments in and give the audience that much needed time to react to you. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. Cruising With Paul Romhany # 49 -------------------------------------------- Message from Paul Romhany (NZ) Robbed On A Flight!!! Well, you know me. Always a story to tell. Just thought I'd share this one with you all. Got off the ship in Tahiti - flew to LA after standing in the hot sun for over 2 hours to check in. The check in desk in Tahiti is outside!! Anyway, get to LA after a delayed flight so had only 45 minutes to get through immigration, customs then go find my next gate. I just happened to be looking at my baggage claim ticket on the flight to LA when I realized they had tagged my bag wrong. After immigration I had to then exit with my bag - head over to American Airlines and check in again. With only minutes to spare I made my connecting flight - phew! So, off I head to Toronto. Natalie had spent the week with her family in Vancouver and was to meet up with me at our gate in Toronto as she was flying home as well. There I am sitting there when I see she is surrounded by several people and police!! Would you believe she got robbed on the airplane! Who the heck would have thought that could happen. Her wallet was taken out of her handbag and money stolen from her wallet. It wasn't a full flight apparently, but another passenger saw it all unfold and quietly told the stewardess. Natalie had no idea what happened as this guy was sitting in front of her and just boldly took her purse and went through it and put it back!! The 'balls' this guy had - obviously done it many times before. So, when her plane landed the police boarded and hauled this thief away. Natalie and the witness then had to give statements, check what else was stolen etc. The down side is that this guy must have realized that the 'fuzz' was on to him so he ditched the money. Apparently they did a full body search of this guy and nothing came up - however Natalie's money was gone from her wallet. They arrested him and he now has a criminal mark in his passport, which is something at least because every time he travels he'll be red flagged! I hope they give him a full body search when he travels again - complete with rubber gloves. That's a new story for me - never heard of this before, but according to the police, and the airline, it happens more than we know about. There's a lesson for us all there somewhere - fly FIRST CLASS I say! Well, to cap this all off, we get on our plane from Toronto to Moncton, almost land in Moncton at about 2.30am when the pilot decides it's too dangerous due to heavy ice rain. We then fly to Quebec where we sit on the tarmac for awhile why they refuel. Finally, here we are back in Toronto where we started sitting at the airport at 5.30am waiting to get a connecting flight to finally try and get home. So, I left Tahiti two days ago, over forty eight hours, and am still trying to get home. Whoever thinks this life we have traveling the world almost every week performing is full of glamour is under some delusion. In all my years as a working pro I have yet to experience the wonderful glamour side that I thought it would be! Well, actually I did on my last ship when I sat on my balcony with a glass of champagne, feet up and looking at Bora Bora! But trust me - that is a rare thing in my world of show business. KIDabra Conference August 12-15 2009 -------------------------------------------- Message from Mark Daniel The Year of The Performer It really is challenging as a children's or family performer to see other shows "live" because of the very nature of what we do. Private performances such as birthday party shows in homes, educational shows in schools, themed programs in preschools and more, often, do not afford you the opportunity to see top quality performances by the best in these closed venues. How do you really know if you have a good show, if you've never seen someone do a great performance?  At KIDabra International we've spent years and thousands of hours pondering this question and speaking to it to raise the bar of performance. Join us August 12-15th 2009 during KIDabra Conference where, for the first time ever, you'll have an unprecedented All Access Pass. Imagine if you could be a fly on the wall and attend the live performances of many of today's top children's performers! Imagine if you could see their actual shows in front of a live audience of children and families. Access granted, you will! See one of the world's best known KIDshow Vent's Mark Wade present his Character Education School Show before a group of school age children! Spend An Evening with Duane and Mary Laflin with a Special Family Night Magic Show with invited folks from the community as an audience! See Wonder Imagery's very busy Tim Sonefelt with a Live Summer Reading Library Show Performance! Plus you'll see a Preschool Show and yes a Live Birthday Party Show too! Add to that an appearance and live performance by the extraordinary Emmy Award winning actor/magician Max Howard and you have the opportunity to see more live performances at KIDabra Conference and learn more from the best than ever before! Plan now to be a part of something big, something special, something magical: KIDabra Conference 2009 is The Year of The Performer!
