Working On An Article About "Rip-Offs" -------------------------------------------- Message by Tim Ellis (Aust) I'm currently working on an article about "Rip-offs" in the magic fraternity. Specifically manufacturers who choose to bring out copies (or "their versions") of popular selling tricks. I'm interested in hearing from both manufacturers and magic dealers who are willing to be quoted on this topic. 1 - Your definition of a "rip-off". 2 - "Rip-off" or "healthy competition"? 3 - When is a product "fair game", and when is it not? 4 - If you were told a product in your line was a rip-off, and removing it would improve your reputation in the community... would you? Or would you rather continue to make money from it by selling it, even though you now know it's a rip-off? 5 - Is the internet making it easier for people to copy and release other people's effects? 6 - Any personal examples you'd like to share. Thanks, Email direct to Tim@MagicUnlimited.com -------------------------------------------- 4. Remarkable Magic #91 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) The highly commercial magic of Paul Green. When I arrived in California in 1974 I can honestly say I didn't know a single magician. It was truly starting all over again in the friend department. I suppose this could have been daunting to anyone without the natural buoyancy of a 21 year old but I was ready to roll with the punches. Before I left England Ken Brooke had given me a short list of people that he said I should look up and say "Hi" to. The first person on his list was Dai Vernon who Ken always spoke of in the most glowing terms as one of the finest gentlemen he had ever met. Now, naļve as I may have been it did occur to me that beyond saying "Hi" the subsequent conversation with Mr. Vernon might prove to be limited. In fact it took me quite a few years to be able to feel comfortable having a serious conversation with the Professor. By this time I realized how right Ken had been, leaving aside his phenomenal brilliance as a magician, Dai was indeed a true gentleman. The two other names that Ken gave me to make contact with were Pete Biro and Paul Green. He spoke very highly about them, both as performers and people. It proved to be several years before I made the acquaintance of Pete at the Magic Cellar in San Francisco. Paul Green however was right there in Los Angeles and proved to be as friendly and helpful as a newcomer in town could hope to meet. Paul was a fellow Ken Brooke enthusiast and like myself seemed to own the entire line of routines from 'Ken Brooke's Magic Place.' This gave us some wonderful common ground to begin a friendship. I remember being amazed that Paul owned two or three of each of his favorite Ken Brooke props. After my initial surprise at this apparent eccentricity I quickly grasped the sound thinking behind it and have followed suit ever since. If you have a prop that you use to make a living then own at least two of them! I remember when Susan and I joined Paul and his wife Sue for dinner at their home in the San Fernando Valley. It was the first dinner invitation I had received in my new homeland and while I don't remember exactly what we did I suspect there was a great deal of magic talked. Paul had determined even then that his field of expertise was close-up magic and was a skilled and highly commercial performer. Hailing from the British Isles I was not too familiar with the kind of formalized close-up performances that were such a major part of the available work in California. At this period of time in England, performing close-up was primarily something you did for other magicians or just before closing time in your local pub. On the rare instances I give advice to young potential comedy magicians I almost always tell them that they could probably make a better living by concentrating on their close-up skills and availing themselves of the more abundant work available to them. It is a both well paid and an enjoyable area of expertise. Paul has always stuck with this choice and has become one of the smoothest and most skilled close-up entertainers in the business. He knows the tricks to do, how to do them right and how to make a fine living with them. He is the consummate pro in the world of private shows. Paul also took time out to write one of the most important books that a magician can ever read with his treatise on the classic force, everything Paul does he does well, and this work is a must for any performer worthy of his salt to study. For details on my recession busting lecture 'Making Money with Magic,' check out my website www.nicklewin.com it is a great way to get some of those old props out the cupboard and make some money with them! -------------------------------------------- 6. Evolution of The Act #114 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com Have you ever been in the middle of a performance and the helper says something so funny that it just gets you and everyone busting out laughing? Have you ever had a young assistant do something by pure chance that made the routine more powerful? Chances are we all have from time to time. It is those moments that we keep and share at magic conventions. But have you ever stopped to really study what happened and determine the reasoning behind it? How can a good situation like that be used in a positive fashion? So many of us have had things happen like this all the time, however we tend to never apply that and use it in the routine. I always realize that my act and routines are in a constant state of evolution. Now do not get me wrong, the routines are not changed drastically for every performance. What I mean is that as a performer, I realize that my routines can evolve over time and become even better than I had envisioned them to be. If we are entertainers and our job is to entertain an audience, then isn't reactions important? In my mind they are critical. I want the reactions from the audience because the audience is what makes us who we are. Now reactions can come in many forms from wow to laughter and everything in between. Well if a situation happens in any of my shows that evokes even more reaction or better reactions, then I should make mental note of that. Instead of just laughing about it and telling friends, maybe I should be thinking how to make that happen in every performance going forward. Maybe by doing so, my routine evolves and becomes even better. I do know that a lot of my routines have evolved over the years simply from something that happened in a routine once unexpectedly. It could have been something someone said or did that just went over really well. I try and remember those moments and write them down before I head home from the gig. This way I try and find a way in which to add that element into the routine to be able to get that laugh every time. To me, my act or routine is never truly finished. It gets to a state that it works in my show, but it is never truly done. It evolves and grows and changes over time. You add things in and take things out simply based on what is working and what is not. But evolution of an act also happens simply because time changes to. Even culture changes and sometimes you have to change a routine entirely simply because what used to play well 3 years ago, simply does not now. It is always being aware of your audience and who they are. It is opening your eyes and accepting golden situations that are given to you. It is applying these opportunities to evolve the act to make it even better. The next time a situation happens unexpectedly in your act, make sure not to shrug it off. Instead spend time to study it and really find out if by chance that little "gift" could be used to evolve the act in a better direction. You will be happy you did and your audiences will thank you for it. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. - "Encore! Cruising With Paul Romhany #65 -------------------------------------------- Message by Paul Romhany (NZ) I am currently on a three week tour of Australia as part of a variety show. We are touring the main centers around the Land of Oz and the other acts include ventriloquist Darren Carr and a hilarious act known as Dave the Great. We are having a great time and working some really fantastic venues with the show. It's an hour and half show filled with variety, and I am the 'magic' part of the show. It's such a wonderful experience working with real professionals, and we enjoy each other's company off stage. This is vital when you are part of a touring show and have to be together for such long periods of time. I have put up some photos on my blog of the venues and tour which you can see at http://romhanyreport.blogspot.com/ I will put up more as the tour progresses. I was able to stop off and do my lecture in Melbourne and Adelaide and had a good time. If you look at my blog you'll see the most amazing magic club rooms in the world - an old bomb shelter!! They have been at that venue since around 1968, and the outside of it has some pretty amazing murals of magicians painted on there. I am currently in Perth, about to do five shows then heading to Sydney, Canberra and finally Brisbane. It's a long way to travel from Canada and I am still feeling the jetlag. I'm usually asleep by 9pm at night and awake at 4am. The only good thing is that I am working on a new book and I am able to do most of my work when I wake up for a few hours. Here is the final installment of 101 cruising. Of course, if you want full details on how to get one of the most sought after jobs in the entertainment industry that is, working on a high end cruise ship, getting paid to see the world, then be sure to get my book, "Entertaining on a cruise ship - the ultimate guide". You can buy this from all good magic shops, or if are in Auckland for my lecture I hope to have a few there for sale. Cruising 101 - part IV Dress Code One of the advantages of being a guest entertainer is that we have passenger status while on the ship, allowing us in to public areas where other crew members are not allowed. We get to mix and mingle with passengers and over the years you will keep meeting the repeat passengers and you can develop some very nice relationships. On ships they usually have dress codes such as semi-formal and formal nights. You are still employed by the cruise line, and like being employed in any job you are an ambassador for the company, therefore you are expected to adhere to the dress code for the evening and also dress in a smart and appropriate manner during daytime hours. Formal nights most men will wear tuxedos and the ladies are dressed in evening gowns, on other nights I always wear a dress shirt and smart pants. Gratuities You are expected to pay gratuities to your cabin steward at passenger rates at the end of the cruise. On some ships where we are in staff areas then the gratuities are slightly less because they only come in once a day and you won't get the full service as if you would if you were in a passenger area. If you eat in the dining room then you must tip your waiter and busboy. As a rule if I chose to eat in the dining room I always tip after my meal, but that isn't very often as I usually eat in the Buffet or Bistro. On the ships now they often have an automatic charge of $10 per person per day gratuity added to your bill, however you do not have to pay this unless you chose to. This is what the passengers pay and it covers all gratuities including the dining room. As I said, I never eat in the dining room and so only my cabin steward gets a gratuity. If we chose to eat in another restaurant on the ship, rather than the buffet, then of course en of course we leave a tip. They usually recommend $3.50 per day for the cabin steward in passenger areas. Dining You are allowed to dine in the passenger dining room and a buffets. Priority to passengers must always be observed. Usually the maitre d' will have a special table put aside for guest entertainers, although on many ships they have placed us with passengers. There are usually two main sittings, one at 6pm and the other at 8.15pm. On the modern ships now they promote open dining so you no longer have to have a seating assignment. Also with the larger ships there is much more choice of dining from 24 hour Lido, Pizzeria, Italian Restaurants, Chinese Restaurants and a Steak House. Of course each ship differs with various restaurants. On the larger ships there will be a cover charge in some restaurants such as the steak house charges $15.00 for the meal, the Italian restaurant charges $25.00 per meal. All crew and passengers pay the same amount to go to these specialality restaurants. On vessels with alternate dining facilities, a cover charge will be made to all staff, guest entertainers, and officers which are usually no more than $2.00. When you join ask if there is such a list with the various charges, or ask another guest entertainer who can tell you. Dining in the officers' mess is by invitation only. Gambling Ships are now like traveling resorts with all types of activities, one of the most popular is the casino. You will need to check out what the rules are pertaining to gambling on the ship you are to be working, but I know that the rules for the company I work for state that guest entertainers and their guests and NOT permitted to gamble onboard. This includes the casino, bingo, horse racing, and any other gambling activities. Note: Update, as of re-reading this article Guest Entertainers are NOW allowed to gamble in the casino for the cruise line I work for. Laundry and Dry Cleaning Again, this varies from company to company, something you will need to check. Ships are equipped with passenger laundrys where you can do your own washing. However be warned . they can be dangerous. Many comedians joke about going to the laundry room and seeing fights and arguments as passengers try to get hold of a washing machine or dryer. Depending on the ship you might be allowed to use the officers or crew laundry room which will not be so bad, but always check to make sure it is okay. If you wish you send your laundry out for cleaning, then Guest Entertainers are charge at the crew rate for their laundry and dry cleaning, again check the regulations for the cruise line you are to be working for. Medical In most cases the company does not provide medical coverage and I strongly recommend for you to arrange your own medical and health insurance plan. In my contract it states that in the event of illness or injury during the term of the contract, guest entertainers agree to look exclusively to their medical and health insurers for payment of medical benefits and not to, in any way, hold the company liable for such payments. Visits to the ship's doctor can be very expensive which is why medical insurance is important, especially when traveling overseas. If on the crew list then more often than not a visit to the doctor will not cost anything, and if they want you to get an injection such as Yellow Fever of the Flu Injection then they will not charge. It all depends on the doctor and ships policy. -------------------------------------------- 8.
