FFFF "Stars" To Appear In Buffalo -------------------------------------------- Message by George Schindler S.A.M. Public Relations The FFFF (Fechter's Finger Flicking Frolic) convention is the "Original Close-Up Magic Convention" meeting in April this year. It is the most prestigious gathering of close-up magicians in the world.  Since 1971 the By-Invitation-Only gathering featured the best performers, creators and lecturers in the world.  By special arrangement, Obie O'Brien brings some of the FFFF stars to appear at the S. A .M .Convention in Buffalo July 15-18. Meet talented close-up performers such as Garrett Thomas, Vic Trabucco, Dan Block Shaun Farquhar and Marc Oberon. Don't miss this event. Here is your "Invitation" http://www.magicsam.com/SAM2009/index.asp -------------------------------------------- 3. Australia's Earliest Recorded Magic Performance -------------------------------------------- Message by Kent Blackmore (Aust) Australia, under European settlement, is still a relatively young nation. While we don't have a history of magicians performing many hundreds of years ago, research is still turning up new information about our earliest performers. Thanks to the new text-searchable Australian newspapers online, (in Beta testing from the National Library of Australia), we can now date the first recorded performance by a magician in Australia to January 1837. Monsieur Du Pree made an appearance in Pitt Street, Sydney with an impressive repertoire. Unfortunately his career hit a stumbling block only months later when he was imprisoned for skipping out without paying the rental for a hall in Windsor! However, he overcame this disaster and continued to perform at least until 1859. You can read about Monsieur Du Pree, and the second recorded magician in Australia - Powell Courtier, Fire King and Necromancer, at Kent Blackmore's "Magic In Sydney" website, http://users.bigpond.com/kblackmore , under the History link. Check back later for more historical stories including the tale of William Frazer, the convict conjurer.  Further updates will include articles on the mystery of William Davenport's grave, and Maurice Rooklyn & the Bullet Catch.   Look out for a significant update on the early history of Oscar "Dante The Great" Eliason, coming soon! -------------------------------------------- 4. Remarkable Magic #92 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) Mike Easterbrook (from Whangarei, New Zealand) the Magician. This week I would like to highlight a comedy magician that I first met due to my column in Magic New Zealand.  Mike Easterbrook is a Kiwi who has really traveled the world extensively and spent time with many of my favorite magicians around the globe. He is a great ambassador not only for New Zealand but the magic world in general. Before I had met Mike face-to-face we exchanged emails and I was impressed with the fact that he had spent time with Billy McComb in his famed Tufnell Park home. He had also spent some time with Ken Brooke studying comedy magic with this giant in the field. These are two people I hold in very high regard. I couldn't quite understand why Mike and I hadn't met each other along the line but I discovered that he arrived in England in 1974 just after I had left the U.K. for America. In 1973 Mike spent time traveling across the United States meeting and learning from Jay Marshall and other iconic magicians that I was soon to discover. In addition to meeting some of the legendary comedy magicians of the era, Mike had traveled via public transport to Malaysia via Greece, Turkey, Iran and Zahedan. Along the route he used his magic to break through the cultural and language barriers he met along the way. Mike even spent some time as stage manager in a theater in Glasgow, Scotland. Getting out of that one unscathed must have involved some heavyweight magic to survive those cultural and language barriers! Only a Kiwi would be brave or naïve enough to attempt that kind of reckless field anthropology. I would feel safer doing stand-up in Baghdad. After his travels Easterbrook eventually returned to New Zealand and the beautiful town of Whangarei. Since his return Mike has been polishing his comedy magic act to a fine shine. Whenever we swap ideas and routines in person or over the Internet I am impressed by his grasp of the art of entertaining by magic. Mike frequently evokes the simple and most important rule of comedy magic; 'It isn't the tricks but what you do with them that matters. This rule is so simple and obvious that many magicians forget to follow it. When not performing his magic show for paying audiences, Easterbrook is never far from a trick or an enthusiastic crowd to appreciate his talents. Mike works as a science laboratory technician and combines science and magic into something that fascinates and stimulates the minds of the lucky youngsters he works with. The link between science and magic is a powerful one and Mike sums it up beautifully when he says, "We could define magic simply as science that we don't understand .and as a trained electrician, I like to remember that once, for many people, electricity was in this category, but I think the really important thing that magic does is to preserve our sense of wonder." Making the acquaintance and sharing the friendship of someone like Mike is one of the delights of writing a column such as this and I look forward to meeting more of my readers in the years to come. Put Yourself Into Your Magic #115 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com Put yourself into your magic? Sounds like a pretty silly question right? I mean you have to be the one who initiates the magic so you would always be in it. However I am referring to something entirely different. I am not so much talking about the performer as I am the performance. Allow me to explain. A magician creates a magical experience that the audience then takes in. However, too many magicians these days go about creating magic with blinders on. They seem to only see one way of thinking. This tends to lead them down only one path and that path usually ends up with a routine or presentation that seems commonplace or even redundant. In many ways this way of thinking creates what I refer to as "magic clones". It is the creation or recreation of what has already been done before countless times. I am not so much saying magicians do this on purpose. I think many start off with good intentions but follow the wrong paths to get to where they want to go. If you are looking at magic for your ideas, then I feel you are going about things the wrong way. Looking at magic for magic is a style of "inward thinking". Now there is nothing wrong with being inspired by magic. However, notice I said inspired rather than imitated. Creativity is the lack of imitation. The problem is too many magicians dive so deeply into magic for ideas that they cannot help but to end up with a routine that is nothing new. Sure it may be a different sequence or a different patter but in essence it is just the rearranging of the components that have always been there before. It may be good, but does it give the audience something new? Does it raise the level of creative thinking in our art? I feel many folks forget about a way of thinking that can break down those blinders we all seem to wear. It strips us from one way of thinking and allows us to explore not one path, but many paths of thinking. Who says a routine has to be done a certain way and only that way? To any one problem there may be multiple solutions. That is the beauty of creative thinking. This new way of thinking can be described as "outward thinking". Outward thinking is the notion of allowing yourself to be inspired by things other than magic itself. Instead of always diving into our magic books and DVDs and YouTube videos, we go an opposite direction. We force ourselves to put away the magic related items and allow ourselves to be open to other areas of influence. When we start to do this, the magic we create can be amazingly fresh, creative and new. So putting yourself into your magic starts to suddenly make a bit more sense. What it means is to allow yourself to place other interests besides magic into what you perform. Every single one of us has interests outside of magic. At least I hope you all do. It is these other passions you may have that can be added to your magic to make it as unique as you are. For myself, I am an artist and was an artist long before I got into magic. It took me a while to realize that my passion for art could be added into the magic I present. When I realized this, suddenly my routines became more fresh, interesting and new. I suddenly had new themes I could explore and it allowed me to add levels or "layers" to which the audience can enjoy. There are many magicians who have understood this notion of placing their own outside interests into their magic. Some are quite obvious. Jeff McBride is a perfect example. He is an amazing performer not just for his skill, but also because what he does on stage is so unique, fresh and so a part of who he is. Watch any routine and you can see elements of mime, martial arts, Kubuki theater etc. These he has added to what he does and by doing so has opened him up to being very unique and different. So I ask you to look inside of yourself and add those other passions to what you do in magic. When you start to do this, you will see a world of creative thought opening up for you. Give it a try. You may just like what you see. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. - "Encore! Cruising With Paul Romhany #66 -------------------------------------------- Message by Paul Romhany (NZ) Tour Of Australia As many of my Australian friends will be aware for the past several weeks I've been touring Australia with a variety show having played Tasmania, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Canberra, Sydney and Brisbane. It's been several years since I toured with a variety show like this the last one were actually with Murray Hatfield's tour across Canada. It sure made me realise how fortunate I have been working on ships for the past decade and having a team of people to help with my full evening show. This tour brought back many memories of years gone by when I would tour on the road, traveling from one venue to another. You get very spoiled on ships as you have the latest technology, latest lighting effects, I get to use my video production that plays a major part in my one man show where I walk in and out of the screen. This tour was good for me because it brought me back to basics, and I realised that it is still possible to create magical and theatrical moments just using basic lighting rig. The team on this tour have been fantastic, from the producer who really knows the business better than anybody else I've met. He does such an amazing job with keeping us all happy and producing a great show. The technical people couldn't have been nicer and the other acts were a pleasure to work with. Each venue on this tour varied, from the amazing to the a hall that held a lot of people but had very little in the way of lights on staging. Audiences varied as well, and you learn how to adapt very quickly to the needs of each group. On a ship, generally each audience is pretty much the same, once you have your show set that's it for the season. On this tour, we had to look at the audience and make one or two changes for their needs. We did one show in Sydney which was probably 90% handicapped people in the audience, all with different needs. It made it incredibly hard to perform, however we all gave 110% and put on a hell of a show. The funny thing was they all had to be out in their buses by a certain time, so when I walked out most of them were gone!! Despite it being tough from a performance point of view, there is something very rewarding knowing that you are presenting your act to a group of people who wouldn't normally get the chance to go out and see live theatre. This for me, is what made that show enjoyable and certainly rewarding from that point of view. I am presenting my final Australian magic lecture tonight, it's been great to meet up with friends across Australia and present the lecture. The feedback has been great and very positive. I do have ONE QUESTION though for all Australian magicians. Now, please don't shoot me down for this, because it's just an observation from an outsiders point of view, but why is it that in almost EVERY bit of publicity I have seen for an Australian magician they all claim "AUSTRALIA'S TOP MAGICIAN". I'm not sure what this means and how can Australia have ten TOP magicians? Please remember that I've been out of the magic scene now for over twelve years as I've been busy working overseas and no time to join clubs or mix with fellow magicians, so perhaps I'm out of the loop on this one. I have to admit I could claim I am Shediac's Top Magician (that's where I live in Canada) because I am the ONLY magician in Shediac! I was at the Melbourne Comedy Festival recently and read through the program. There were  a lot of magicians and they seemed to be claiming this. The ONLY person who actually didn't claim it, and really in my mind is the best, was Raymond Crowe. His publicity was so down to earth that it stood out from everybody else. I am sure this claim is made all over the world, but I'm curious to what actually makes a magician the TOP IN THEIR COUNTRY. Do you have to win the local magic club award to become TOP. How does one rate themselves. Personally, I think we should all take a leaf out of Raymond Crowe's book and just put  out the facts. Of course, Raymond is so well known with his incredible hand shadow routine, and for his creative performances, that he doesn't need to put TOP, because he is without a doubt the most well known around the world, not just Australia. I'm not writing this to upset magicians in Australia and sorry if you take this the wrong way. This is simply an observation I am making after traveling through your wonderful country. I'm just curious and am sure this will spark an answer. Maybe it's time to find another way to promote ourselves rather than be 'TOP'. Just an outsiders view on what I have seen! -------------------------------------------- 7. The Magic Circle Collectors' Day -------------------------------------------- Message from Eddie Dawes (UK) (Open to non-Members of The Magic Circle) Saturday, 30 May 2009 The Centre for the Magic Arts Chairman: Eddie Dawes Official Opening by Vice-President Jack Delvin at 10.45 a.m. Speakers include: Dean Arnold - Some Gems from My Collection Will Houstoun - Insights on 18th-Century Professional Card Magic from a Contemporary Notebook Richard Evans - Isaac Fawkes: Myth and Legend Richard Stokes - Jasper Maskelyne's Wartime Scrapbook Elizabeth Warlock & Mike Gancia Peter Warlock's Way Exhibition 'A Sage of the Stage, not a Beast in a Cage' Edinburgh artist Sharon Whyte presents a series of screen prints relating to 'learned' or 'educated' animals and Programmes from the David Booth Collection Coffee will be served from 10.00 a.m. Tickets (including lunch and afternoon tea) £35.00 Tickets available from The Magic Circle, The Centre for the Magic Arts, 12 Stephenson Way, London NW1 2HD Tel. 020 7387 2222 Email cma@themagiccircle.co.uk Payment may be made by cheque (payable to 'The Magic Circle') or by Visa / Mastercard. The programme for this year's Collectors' Day is a varied and fascinating one which also embraces an interesting exhibition. First, Edinburgh artist Sharon Whyte will display her series of screen prints all relating to so-called 'learned' or 'educated' animals, a true oddity of magic and performance history. They reached the height of their popularity in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and the various claims stated on playbills and other ephemera include their ability to tell the time, read and spell, perform arithmetic and do tricks with cards. The surviving playbills, reviews, posters, songs and books that relate their history form the backbone of this series of screen prints (all of which are hand printed by the artist). The intention is to convey the playfulness with which such entertainments were both presented and received in their time and to celebrate a unique piece of history using colourful imagery mixed with original ephemera. The second display is being mounted by David Booth who for many years has specialised in the collection of programmes relating to magic. It will feature a selection of interesting examples drawn from his extensive archive of these informative sources of magic history. Speakers include Richard Stokes from Australia whose important researches on Jasper Maskelyne's Second World War exploits, as recounted in his book Magic- Top Secret and subsequently in David Fisher's The War Magician, have subjected them to critical scrutiny. Richard will provide an illuminating talk on 'Jasper Maskelyne's Wartime Scrapbook', which was loaned to David Fisher by Alistair Maskelyne (Jasper's son) and has not yet been returned to the family. It is now thirty years since Eddie Dawes first published a monograph on Isaac Fawkes and Richard Evans will bring to light, under the title of 'Isaac Fawkes: Myth and Legend', significant new revelations on the life and times of this famous early 18th-century performer, arising from his own impressive and extensive researches. Dean Arnold, an ardent American magic collector and Magic Circle member now based in London, will discuss and show some of the gems in his collection via the medium of PowerPoint, and Will Houston will discuss his researches on the contents of a very intriguing late 18th century handwritten notebook that resides in The Magic Circle Library. The unknown author meticulously describes card magic from the professional repertoires of Astley, Boaz, Breslaw, Maxwell, Reay, Rees and Walton as performed in the latter part of the eighteenth century. Will, additionally, will demonstrate some examples of the magic described in these pages. The late Peter Warlock, co-founder with Eddie Dawes, of Collectors' Day in 1976, was, among his many magical talents, an originator of some splendid magic and his daughter Elizabeth, together with Mike Gancia, will recall and re-create examples of his genius, admirably illustrating 'Peter Warlock's Way' to bring Collectors' Day to a memorable conclusion.. -------------------------------------------- 10. Magicians Visit North Korea -------------------------------------------- Message by Dale Salwak (US) I have just returned from six days (April 12-18) in Pyongyang, North Korea - where I had the privilege of performing in the 2,500-seat Pyongyang Circus Theatre along with Yuji Yasuda (South Korea) and Mirko Callaci (Spain) as part of the 26th annual Democratic People's Republic of Korea April Spring Friendship Art Festival. We also performed in the 300-seat Pyongyang Magic Theatre for the Magicians Association of Korea and they, in turn, performed for us - 12 acts, all different, all unique. I was very impressed. The event brought in 680 performers representing 28 countries, and we were made to feel most welcome. I was the only American. The trip and all the arrangements necessary took close to two years of planning. Watch for a full report, along with photographs taken by Domenico Dante (Italy), to appear soon in a major magic magazine. -------------------------------------------- 13. OMS Meeting Change Reminder -------------------------------------------- Message by Bob Buczkowski This is to give you a reminder of a great lecture the Omaha Magical Society is hosting in 11 days. Norman Beck will be here on April 30, which is a different night from our regular meeting night. So mark your calendars regarding the change in meeting date. The place and time will be the same, Southwest Church of Christ, 124th & Center Sts, Omaha, NE, at 7:00 PM. The cost of this meeting is $10.00 for OMS members and $15.00 for non members. See you there.  Mr. Beck resides in Dallas, Texas. He has been involved in magic since the age of nine and doing it for money since the age of fifteen. He currently writes for M-U-M and has had tricks published in many magic magazines. Rather than tell what the lecture is and spoil it, Mr. Beck would like to point out what the lecture is not: It is not a dealer lecture. It is not a lecture you need to buy the notes to get value from it. It is not a lecture of magic theory It is not a lecture of variations of other people's tricks. It s not a lecture of finger flinging. In short: "The bulk of the lecture is doing magic for REAL people in REAL situations."
