Taylor's Magic Shop Pty Ltd for sale -------------------------------------------- Message by Sean Taylor (Aust) Submissions are invited for the purchase of the business known as "Taylor's Magic Shop Pty Ltd". Taylor's Magic Shop was established in 1994 by Sean and Diana Taylor, initially operating solely by mail order. Both had previous senior retail experience and Sean Taylor had been a professional magician since 1983. A retail shop front in Sydney was added in April 97. In those 15 years, Taylor's has grown to be a full service "magic centre" offering lessons, workshops, lectures, and an annual convention. As such, it has a reputation as one of the world's great magic shops. In addition to the regular services and vast range of imported products, Taylor's has developed a range of quality 'in house' products with local and overseas manufacturers. In a time when much of the magic world has headed online, Taylor's has fought the trend to maintain a worldwide profile and as a shop front dealer of quality, integrity and service. Not only is Taylor's the first choice magic supplier to the largest slice of the Australian magic community, it is also widely recommended as the first point of call for international visitors. Due to personal and family commitments beyond their control, Sean and Diana Taylor have regrettably made the decision to sell the business. They are actively seeking parties with the knowledge of magic, enthusiasm and desire to be at the very centre of magic in Australia. Buyers will need to demonstrate and exercise the same kind of commitment and work ethic which has made Taylor's the business it is today. It is worth noting that Taylor's... 1. Was the first Australian magic shop to specialise in purely magic products. 2. Was the first and only Australian dealer to offer regular in-house lectures. 3. Was the first and only Australian dealer to operate an annual convention in Australia (now in its 14th year). 4. Was the only Australian magic shop to export large numbers of in house products.  (The first range won an export grant from the NSW government and has been featured in their in-house magazine.) 5. Was the first magic dealer in Australia to operate an on-line shop. 6. Is the first and only dealer in the world to offer regular DVD catalogues. 7. Has a list of lecturers brought to Sydney which reads like a who's who of magic and includes 9 World Champions! Taylor's Magic Shop is a leader and not a follower and is widely acknowledged as having made a major contribution to magic in Australia. The successful buyer will be purchasing: 1. A well known, successful Australian owned business. 2. Rights to all events, products, intellectual property, business name, and activities owned and operated by Taylor's Magic Shop including courses and course materials, the annual convention, the spot on the traveling lecturer circuit etc. 3. The website and web associated web business. 4. The know how, reputation and goodwill associated with a highly regarded and influential business. (There will be a handover period during which all the required training and assistance will be given with full transparency.) 5. Established relationships with a portfolio of suppliers located across 20 countries. 6. An active customer base across Australia and New Zealand of more than 1500 magicians. 7. The stock, fixtures, fittings, signage, technology, furniture, stationery, packaging and equipment. 8. An existing lease with extremely generous terms including fixed increases and outgoings. Serious expressions of interest can be forwarded by email to: sean@seantaylor.com.au By telephone internationally to +614 80 20 20 or locally to 0414 80 20 20 By mail to P. O. Box 364 Chatswood NSW 2067 Australia Please note that this activity will not affect the upcoming convention, since the process is expected to take some months to complete. The acts, venues and talent are booked and confirmed. -------------------------------------------- 4. Remarkable Magic #93 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) The Hosts with the Most. One of the greatest joys of visiting the Magic Castle in the 70s were the fabulous bunch of eccentric characters who acted as hosts and introduced the acts. They added an enormous amount of charm and authenticity to your evening. The first person I met at the Castle was Don Lawton. Don was as charming as he was funny. Over the years that I watched Don introducing performers he always made me laugh. He would lean in through the curtain in the Close Up Gallery with a slightly bemused expression and say; "Oh, Porter..." and even though I had never been a passenger on a Pullman train I would be in stitches. In the old Palace of Mysteries, Don would produce a six-foot straw and try to get a taste of a drink from a lady in the back row. In the Parlour we were treated to his hysterical memorizing of an entire deck in a routine that never got old. It was at the Castle where I first met Senator Crandall in his capacity of host. No sooner had we met than he began to recite a quasi-biblical story about God instructing mankind on how to make a profit on the selling of polo shirts by sewing an alligator on the front of them. When Crandall finished his recitation I mentioned how much I enjoyed the writings of Woody Allen. The piece was word for word from Woody's first book and all the better for being spoken. After I said this, the Senator gave me a sideways glance and said, "A magician who reads actual books. I will have to keep an eye on you." You couldn't start to describe these weird and wonderful folks without a very special nod to Mickey O'Malley. To say that Mickey was an eccentric is to vastly understate the case. When the evening was winding down at the Castle, Mickey would produce his rather battered trumpet and play various jazz classics. Years later after Mickey had died I was attending a swap meet at the Castle and bought a spring rat that had belonged to him. It is without doubt the most disgusting looking prop I have ever seen. I love it. I picked it up from the table and held out a handful of dollars just seconds before Harry Anderson was able to do the same. Timing. Another key player in those fun filled days was Jack Herlbert. Jack was a master of Ring Flight and had a huge collection of different versions. One month the 80 dollars that was our share of the rent on the ramshackle house we lived in looked like it would not arrive. I sold Jack my Jim Hooper Nemo Ring Flight-the one that could be examined. I regretted the sale later, but in this business you lose a key case here and find a spring rat somewhere else. Of course you can't really examine a spring rat (with Mickey O'Malley's no one would want to-my wife is still scared of it) but then again there is really no need to ever have your Ring Flight key case examined either! The Art of Simplicity - #116 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com As an artist, I was always taught to look beyond the obvious and to really learn to "see" beyond what I think is there. I was also taught to see the beauty in the simplest of shapes and the simplicity of nature. It was a lesson I had always used in my art because it made sense. However, I never realized that this notion of simplicity can be directly carried over to the magic that I do and perform for my audiences. Can simplicity be used to make me a better performer? Can it be used to create acts or routines that make better sense to an audience? This is what I would like to explore with you. Often times we as magicians create acts and routines that are more for ourselves then they are for our audiences. We fall in love with the moves and complexity of things as that intrigues us. Part of being a magician is the love for the technical side of what we do. The ability to learn moves is fascinating for us. However, aren't these moves supposed to be invisible to the audience? How many of you reading this have ever seen a performance of a card manipulation act that went on way too long? How many of you have seen a linking ring routine that seemed to last forever? Laugh if you want because it is funny. It is funny because we all know it to be true. I think what happens is that we learn these moves and love the moves so figure we have to include every single one in the routine we create. Well time for a reality check. Just because you know how to vanish a card 50 different ways, does not mean your audience wants or needs to see all 50 ways. To a lay audience it means you vanished a card and produced the card and you are doing it over and over again. In many cases, certain routines can be often too over done for a lay audience. We can often overload them with so much that the audience simply shuts down from engaging with you. In this case, we need to learn that simplicity can be a good thing. It can often allow our routines to play even better than we had thought they would. Now simplicity is a scary thing for most performers. The thought of not doing as much terrifies some people. We do so much in our acts because 1) we can 2) we love it and 3) it allows us to hide behind the moves. But remember there is beauty in simplicity. Let me share with you an analogy that may make this point clear. A master craftsman has many tools. He owns a full shop of every tool ever created for wood working. He has studied them all and knows how to use every one of them. But this craftsman does not start a project thinking he has to use every single item in his shop. He simply knows just which ones to use to create a cabinet of beauty. The end result is a beautiful thing and it is created that way from him simplifying what he does. A magician needs to do the same thing. Use just the right tools (moves and techniques) to create what you are looking for. Maybe certain segments do not need to be done in order for the effect to still work. It is helpful to sit back and record your routine or act. Then objectively see what you can physically take out and still be able to tell the story you are trying to tell. Strip it down to its most basic format. When you do this you start to develop what I refer to as the "foundation" of the routine. This foundation is simply the act or routine in its most basic format that still works, still plays and is understood by and audience. Once you get here, you will be amazed at how much you do not have to do to still convey things. Once you get this foundation, you can then start to build in a few things as you need to in order to develop a laugh or get a reaction. But everything is sill always reviewed for simplicity. Now do not mix up simplicity for boring. They are not the same thing at all. Simplicity can be a beautiful thing. It means that card act may not have to last 7 mins with every card move known to man. It means the ring routine does not have to utilize 8 rings and 3 minutes of ring combination patterns. I have seen ring routines that are just so amazingly beautiful that are done with no more than 3 rings and performed in 3 minutes. It is not how much you do but what you do with what you have. Sometimes simplicity alone can allow the magician to concentrate more on the entertainment value of the act. It allows you to slow down and to give more to the audience. So the next time you are developing a routine, take a step back from it and view it with an open and critical eye. Strip the routine down and ask yourself is there anything in the routine that complicates what I am trying to convey? Can I take anything away and by doing so, allow myself to give more to the audience? Is this simplicity actually making the effect even stronger? I think when one starts to do this, they realize that simplicity itself can be a magic tool in our tool box. It can be used to great effect if we simply open our eyes to seeing and using it. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. Entertainer Danny Gans Has Died In His Sleep -------------------------------------------- Message by David Neubauer (US) Entertainer Danny Gans has died in his sleep on Thursday night at the age of 52. An official with Wynn Las Vegas calls the death sudden, and said she does not yet have details. Gans was a singer, comedian, actor and impressionist who performed for many years at the Mirage before moving to the Encore Theater at Wynn Las Vegas. Steve Wynn issued a statement on the death. "Elaine and I and all of us in the company are devastated at the loss of our brilliant, talented and loving friend. One of the most unique human beings and entertainers in the world has been taken from us in an unexpected moment. A profoundly tragic event that leaves us all sad and speechless. The loss of Danny to his wife Julie, his children Amy, Andrew and Emily is at this moment impossible to comprehend. We will all try to go on with our lives without our dear friend. At this point, it seems almost impossible." -------------------------------------------- 8. S.A.M. I would like to remind everyone that you can catch up with ALL the TOP magicians at the Adelaide Magic Convention - Australia's Friendliest Convention which is on again this year from October 16th to 18th. Adelaide boy, Raymond Crowe, will be there, as well as Terry Herbert(UK) and Geoff Williams(US). Michael Ammar's One Man Show -------------------------------------------- Message from Henry Pettit The enclosed material is the promotion for a special one man show at the Opera House. We do 35+ weeks of legitimate theatre each year with a winter community theatre season and a professional summer stock season. Michael Genevie, the executive producer and director and I are both magicians and have worked together for over 30 years, about the length of time we have known Michael Ammar. We met him in West Virginia with Michael Genevie's touring dinner theatre at Michael Ammar's father's hotel. Michael Ammar came to Abbeville, October 10, 2008 to do the magic spot in an original Vaudeville play that Michael Genevie wrote for the 100th anniversary of the opening of the opera house (8pm October 10m 1908)  and I did the rest of the run in the spot. Michael was hooked on using the opera house to do a special one man show and this is the result. The opera houses were great for legitimate theatre and magic, it is a shame that so many have been lost. Abbeville is a hemp house, fully restored to its original glory with a modern lighting system and an acoustical balance the modern venues can't match. Everything about it makes it perfect for a Michael Ammar performance. The connection that Michael Ammar shares is through his wife, Hannah who is a member of the Willard family, her mother as many of you know, is Frances Willard. -------------------------------------------- 12. Most of the props required are standard items that you already own or are very simple to make. John is perhaps best known as an award winning ventriloquist. In the second half of his lecture he will demonstrate and teach the skills needed to bring a puppet to life. Those of you with puppets at home in the closet will be inspired to dust them off and put them to work! Even experienced vents may pick up a trick or two!
