More Remarkable Magic #11 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) It's a Vegas week 'BayBe.' I just completed a 7-day, 14-show week at the Riviera Hotel here in Las Vegas and even managed to perform for two charity based events during the week.  It was a busy week that has left me feeling rather tired and very upbeat. It was great to work in a comedy club again for the first time in 10 years. You really do have to work to keep your performance as 'Hack Free' as possible; those comedians will call you on any 'borrowed' or stock material before you finish your first night. It is a pain but a necessary one. You know the way magicians feel about secrets, well that's how comedians feel about jokes. They are always expecting you to do original material. They can't understand why magicians all do the same tricks and then when they hear the same 'patter' they go into overdrive!  They have a point of course-it is becoming time to retire the 'Bandana' trick. Of course, when you try to explain to them that comedians tend towards a massive degree of similarities in their categories of jokes then they become a lot more obtuse!  The fact that so many magicians do a burnt and restored bill trick in their show can in no way be likened or compared to the number of comedians who do a 'relationship' routine. Truth is they are both stepping blocks to an act. I have always found it highly therapeutic to perform with pure stand-up comedians. It keeps a performer on his toes and on his best comedy behavior and these are good things. Very few comedians write joke books to sell to other comedians, why would they, when a well-crafted one liner can sell for hundreds of dollars in the comedy world. I headlined on the comedy circuit (when it was the Comedy Circuit) for 11 years and I learned to respect the comedy code and to live within it. Sadly until proven innocent, this world includes a belief that all magicians are hacks and thieves who secretly wish they were pure stand-ups. I have long practiced a process that over-rules and upends this general problem. I like to do 'callbacks' on the previous comedians jokes. Listen carefully to their material and customize your performance to include some effective callback jokes. It is quite legitimate and best of all comedians hate it! They will often dump entire hunks of their best material rather than give you a clear shot at using the weight of their own material to add a laugh to your show. One of my recent charity events was a video film to promote the 'Fat Boy Open,' a golf tournament in Las Vegas that benefits the 'Three Square Food Bank.' Here in Vegas it scarcely seems enough to just have a food bank for the hungry. Never mind three square meals a day-this is Vegas and it seems to me we should be able to manage a 24 hour, all you can eat, buffet for our needy and hungry. Steve Dacri amazed me with his skill as a director and editor and it was truly a pleasure to work with him and Billy Collins on this project. If you want to check out my 'Colonel Nick' character then you may watch the short video at http://nowmagic.info/nowmagic/?p=329 More about the other charity event next week because I want to introduce you to Jason Andrews a fine manipulative magician who I think will be a real presence in the magic world in the very near future. I have been receiving some great reaction to my new blog 'Remarkable Magic' and the various; stories, photos, interviews and videos that I have been featuring. The link is http://nowmagic.info/nowmagic/ why not bookmark it or better still RSS it and check out what's going on there on a regular basis. -------------------------------------------- 6. Tradeshow Approach - #137 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com A magician is first an entertainer. However, I think it is safe to say we are also solution providers. It is our goal to provide the perfect solution to the needs that the client has. When working tradeshows, this need is to attract prospects to the booth so that the sales force can make a lead and a possible sale. We do that through the process of theming our routines around the product, benefits and services the company represents. But can one take this tradeshow approach and use it in other markets? I think there is tremendous value in learning to utilize some of the "tradeshow" approaches in other areas of performance. This simply means having the ability to theme your effects and routines for the client you are working for. If I am doing a party for a company's customer appreciation day or a festival show is sponsored by company, I can utilize this approach to add value and to also build the relationship I have with them. Do I have to do this? No I certainly do not have to. In these cases, a standard show is what they are asking for and expect. However, by going the extra mile, one will find incredible value. For example, if you are doing strolling magic for a company's appreciation day, take the time to develop a trick whose patter and story is themed around what the company does and the services they provide. It really is not as hard as it may seem. One effect I will always use for this is simply one most every magician knows by heart Professor's Nightmare. It is an easy effect that can be added to through variations and can be easily themed to most any company's service offerings. It only takes a bit of creativity and some simple research. It is very easy in this age of technology and the internet to do research online. A simple Google search will bring up the company's website. Reading the website will get you armed with a wealth of information you can directly use and apply. Imagine the ability to call certain company's employees by name even when you have never met them before. Imagine the power of being able to know the areas that these people head up or even what they look like before you even show up at an event? Imagine the increased value you have if you can know the products they offer or the services they sell? Even doing this simple bit of research can make you look very impressive in their eyes. Just recently I took this approach to an Insurance and Finance Broker's customer appreciation festival. It was simply a laid back event whereby customers could come with their families for food, fun and entertainment. I was scheduled to do 3 hours of strolling magic only. By simply spending a few hours the week before, I was able to develop a rope routine that fit perfectly with their mission statement and what the company represented. As I was going around, I would perform this one routine as part of my strolling set. The eyes would always light up and smiles form on their faces as I performed this piece. You could tell they appreciated the fact that I knew their business. I performed this for the HR folks at the information table and they enjoyed it so much that they took me right over to the CEO and asked me to perform it for him and the heads of the company. The President loved it and could not believe I knew as much as I did about what they do. I walked away with many great quotes, compliments and a nice tip. But more importantly, I walked away knowing that they saw me not as just another magician but as the Magical Illusions of Kyle and Kelly. To me that means a lot. It means they will be calling me for their next event and knowing in advance I deliver something others do not. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. BLiNK!T - An Incredible Evening Of Award-Winning Magic! -------------------------------------------- Message by Chipper Lowell (US) Witness for yourself the magic that takes place in the BLiNK of an eye! WHERE: November 27 & 28th, 2009 - The Music Hall, Portsmouth, New Hampshire. http://www.themusichall.org/calendar/event_detail.asp?eventID=736 This high-energy stage production stars twice honored, "Comedy Magician of the Year!", Chipper Lowell, who has appeared on The Tonight Show, The Disney Channel and the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon. Chipper's unusual brand of original "laugh-out-loud!" magic and improv will have audiences of all ages rolling in the aisles. "Feverish, Frenetic & Hilarious!" says the Los Angeles Times. Joining Chipper onstage are a trio of world-class magical artists. "Female Magician of the Year", Jade, seamlessly blends traditional Chinese conjuring with modern magic effects to present a one-of-a-kind performance. Jade was also honored with the Gold Medal of Magic by the International Magicians Society, and the Golden Mandrake Award in France. She recently appeared on the "Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson" on CBS. There is a very good chance that master magician Christopher Hart has the most famous hand in the entire world. An unusual statement to say the least, but it makes total sense when you realize he played the part of "Thing" in all of the highly-successful "Addams Family" movies. Hart was also twice recognized as "Magician of the Year" by the Magic Castle's Academy of Magical Arts. Other awards include the top prize at the "Grand Prix Magique" held in Monte Carlo, which was presented to Chris by none other than Princess Stephanie. Hart's performance is a highly visual treat for the eyes! Rounding out this stellar cast is the art and illusions of Joe Devlin - The "Matador of Magic". Devlin has entertained audiences all over the world with his mind-boggling magical routines and illusions. He has also appeared on the television soap opera "All My Children", and has garnered dozens of awards for his incredible act, including "The Merlin Award" from the International Magicians Society, and "Magician of the Year" from the Society of American Magicians in New York. BLiNK! is unlike any other magic show out there, as these high-caliber "artists of the impossible" unleash their original brand of comedy, magic, and illusion. Young and old alike will thoroughly enjoy this wonderful evening of wonder! Just remember, whatever you do.... Don't BLiNK! 2010 TOUR DATES: Jan 29 -- Klamath Falls, OR Jan 30 - Medford, OR March 26 - Modesto, CA March 27 - Carmel, CA Additional dates will be announced shortly. Henry Lewis Visits Chicago ------------------------------------------- Message by Henry Lewis (UK) Two weeks ago I had the opportunity to visit Chicago. Not only was I enthralled by the beautiful and clean city itself but also with the wonderful people associated with magic that I had the pleasure of meeting. They included Eugene Berger who was to me a very gracious and extremely kind and patient man. Not only in his hands a trick became a miracle but also more important in my view a work of art. To have spent many hours with him and his delightful conversation was a treasure. Robert Charles, Mike Burke and Benjamin Barnes who are the directors of Chicago Magic was the purpose of my visit where I was invited to give a forty minute stage performance. Eugene, Robert and Mike gave me several tours of the city and shared with me many meals in gourmet restaurants. Accompanied by Eugene, Robert and Mike I visited the magic store and club of Tim Felix a very warm and generous man and then on to the store of the late Jay Marshall now operated by Sandy Marshall and his charming wife assisted by Pedro, a talented magician. It was in the theatre at the rear of the store that I was honoured to give a lecture to local magicians. A highlight of my visit was arranged by Sandy Marshall to the Al Capone 'speakeasy' which has retained the original stables once own by the Chicago Mounted Constabulary and sold to Al Capone! It was dusk at the time of my visit to the 'speakeasy'. In the large open area the moonlight partially obscured by the multitude of beautiful mulberry trees Sandy and Mrs Marshall arranged a barbeque for my visit to Chicago. Everyone I met connected with the art and performance of magic were very kind to me and I feel now that I have made many new genuine friends. I shall ever be grateful to all those I have mentioned and the considerable pleasure they have added to my wonderful 'magic life'. If it had not been for John Fisher (the author of the great 'Cardini' book and many others) and Cesareo Pelaez of the Larcom and Cabot Theatres in Beverly MA encouraging me to accept the invitation I would have missed a most delightful and rewarding week. -------------------------------------------- 14.
