Editor's Message ------------------------------------------- Anthony Darkstone (aka Tony Brook) to lecture for IBM Ring 257 in Las Vegas at Boomers on October 21 2009. Well known in the business by many of the major names and several Las Vegas Magical personalities, he is highly rated internationally as a Performer, Producer, Writer & Talk Show Host. He has been in the business for several decades and has performed and lectured in Africa, Brazil, Israel, several countries in Europe, Canada, and in the US. Although he has made a reputation as a Magician of The Mind, his lecture covers several other aspects of our Art. This lecture is unique. Called "The Insider Sessions" it's two lectures in one. The first part is packed full of various effects that are taken from his own extensive performing repertoire. The second half reveals the secrets behind the workings of an extremely deadly card force which reveals how to effortlessly force not just one but several cards from a regular deck. It never fails! He also demonstrates a Stacked Deck Principle, which dates back to 1612 and was used by Spanish pirates to cheat at card games. Both parts contain excellent practical information that not only shows how, but also why each effect works. He is one of the major magical lateral thinkers alive today. Dynamic, fun and full of personality, it contains good strong commercial Magic. FREE to Ring 257 members. Open to others - cost $20. Lecture begins at 7pm. He has, in the past, contributed to Magic New Zealand e-zine. We are pleased to announce that with effect from January 2010 he will be a regular columnist. Remember if you have any magic news drop me a line: AW@Alan-Watson.com -------------------------------------------- 2. What Happened To Tenyo? -------------------------------------------- Message by Brent Smith - Calgary, Alberta, Canada I have been a collector of their products from early on and I can no longer get most of their magic. None of my suppliers has any products and nor does most magic shops. I don't know what has happened to the company but they have vanished and not answering any emails from their site. Any info would be appreciated. -------------------------------------------- 3. A Tribute To Neil Lester -------------------------------------------- Message by Carl Williams (US) I was shocked and greatly sorrowed to learn of the passing of my friend Neil Lester. I don't know if you have any idea how valuable Neil was to the magic community here in and around the Los Angeles area. He provided the most beautiful and professionally made "gaffed" cards available anywhere in the world. He was always ready and more than willing and able to assist any magician with the development and fabrication of special cards. I for one will miss this wonderful person. By the way, let us not forget that he was a most accomplished magician in his own right. Many is the time I spent an evening at the Hollywood Magic Castle watching Neil perform some newly developed gimmicked card trick he might have just invented. In addition, I might add that I did business with him many times and he was always a gentleman providing me with fair prices and exceptional quality merchandise. The last time I availed myself of his services he made 35 sets of perfectly gimmicked cards that I sold with the Okito/Williams "Replica's of the Masters" series "Okito Mystery Paddle" trick. For those of you whom may purchased this effect please take a good look at the cards. These cards represent a typical example of the talent possessed by this fine magic prop builder. I shall indeed miss this guy and all of the happiness he provided the magic community during his all too short number of years. To his son Curtis I must say: "Thank you for sharing your most loveable and talented father with all of us in magic." Sincerely, Carl Williams Custom Magic -------------------------------------------- 4. Sid Lorraine Is Blogging! -------------------------------------------- Message by Julie Eng (Canada) A Message from the one and only Sid Lorraine... Guess what?! I'm now a blogger! magicana.com/SidLorraine I know it seems odd, since I passed away in 1989 but, because Magicana and my family unearthed my handwritten memoirs, I will share my story in weekly blogs as the featured exhibition on Magicana.com (www.magicana.com/exhibitions.php). So why blog? Well, some of you may know that I was born in 1905 and I was passionate about all things magic! I was also an artist, filmmaker (Ooh! which reminds me to tell you I'll be posting something VERY cool on my blog about this NEAT trick I saw the 1930s), historian and humorist. Some friends on Facebook (www.facebook.com/sidlorraine) actually remember my "crazy" antics. Glad they had fun. Want to be my friend? Anyway, I ramble.... Turns out when my beautiful Rene decided to downsize (there was a lot of my stuff!), the bulk of my collection went to David Ben, the Artistic Director of Magicana. David discovered amongst the buried treasure my handwritten memoirs. David and my family thought it would be fun to have my life's story unfold in a series of weekly blog postings. I really think this blogging business is a lot of fun and I really like that I can share so much of my past with modern technology. So, I invite you to join me on my trip down memory lane: www.magicana.com/SidLorraine . If you want to keep up with me, follow me on Twitter! twitter.com/sidlorraine. I love TWEETING. See you online! Sid -------------------------------------------- 5. More Remarkable Magic #12 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) Jason Andrews a name to watch out for. I recently performed on a cable special entitled, 'Stars amongst the Angels.' The special was in support of the Child Haven children's charity and was filmed in Club Madrid at the Sunset Station Casino. Child Haven is a really great charity and I was very proud to have been included in the event. Amongst the other performers on the bill was a young manipulative magician by the name of Jason Andrews. I was very impressed by Jason's performance and wanted to give Magic New Zealand's readers a heads up on this very talented magician. I think we will hear plenty about him in the next few years. He has won 18 National Awards already and I hope he will make a real splash at FISM when it arrives in Blackpool. Jason was born and grew up in Las Vegas and it is easy to see that Lance Burton has been a definite influence on his style. Who better? Jason has a direct and down to earth audience appeal, however there is a slightly detached and European quality to his act that gives it an elegant sophistication. I loved the Euro vocals that dominated his musical palette and gave it a very warm and international feel. The magic that Jason performed was very nicely put together. The basic structure of Jason's act was classical in its content-Zombie, Candles, Card Manipulation and a Dove Production/Vanish. However there were plenty of nice touches that showed Jason was never going to be a cookie cutter magician. I suspect he will develop into a very successful entertainer. There is a lovely moment in his act when a white zombie miniaturizes into a white Billiard Ball and the manipulations keep on coming right at you. Jason has worked with Joanie Spina, who has a very fine eye when it comes to refining and defining the way magic can be personalized and individualized around a performers strengths and weakness'. You can never see yourself as others see you onstage and it really rocks when you have someone as skilled and perceptive as Joanie helping with the looking. The strong reaction that Jason received from the live audience attending the taping was an indication that his work will probably segue smoothly into a highly commercial 'real person' show. Magic conventions are an OK way to get into the performing world, but I suspect Jason will be moving into a more professional world very quickly. Jason has a website www.jasonandrews.com and you can check him out online. He would be a fine addition to any bill at a magic convention and be extremely popular with the magicians, but also their long-suffering spouses. He is a nice guy, with a good act and nice stage presence. I wish him every success and will watch his progress with interest. I have been receiving some great reaction to my new blog 'Remarkable Magic' and the various; stories, photos, interviews and videos that I have been featuring. The link is http://nowmagic.info/nowmagic/ why not bookmark it or better still RSS it and check out what's going on there on a regular basis. -------------------------------------------- 6. Be Prepared - #138 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com I think every single magician has what we refer to as "horror stories". They are those stories we all share in the lounge after the evening shows at magic conventions. We all have them and we all tell them. We even laugh together when we hear them because we can associate to most everything that is stated. Most of these stories revolve around a common law. Murphy's Law. What can go wrong often DOES go wrong. Ask any magician and they will tell you just how true this is. But how can we be more prepared? How can we have a mind set to always ask ourselves if we are as prepared as we should be? I think the notion of being prepared was first told to me when I was in cub scouts. It simply meant being prepared for anything that could or might happen. The more prepared you were, the better experiences you had. As a magician, we must also be prepared. The very first thing anyone notices about being properly prepared is the fact that it calms you and allows for the nerves to settle down. If you suffer from stage freight, a lot of that stems not out of fear of the audience but more out of fear of proper preparation. The calmer you are on stage the more professional and polished a show you will have. Being prepared also means having an "out" for any type of routine you do and planning that ahead of time as you work on the routines. An out is simply another avenue you can go in when something in a routine does not go the way it is supposed to go. In many ways, I refer to outs as another avenue which I can travel down. All my routines have these avenues. If I plan the outs ahead of time, I can feel confident that I am prepared for any situation that may turn up. Being prepared also means not showing you made a mistake. The only person who will know you made a mistake is you. The audience simply does not know you made an error unless you tell them you did. If you are prepared in this fashion, you can dictate exactly how every show turns out. This can make the difference between an amateur and a professional. It means if something is an obvious mishap, how to stay and remain in character and to use comedy lines or a joke to offset the uneasiness of the situation. By doing so, you remain in control of the show and the flow of it. Being prepared also means being prepared for non-show related situations. This can mean having tools with you to help with illusions. It means having duct tape because it can be used to fix most anything. It also means developing an easy rain gear or weather kit with you if performing outdoor shows. It can mean carrying a sewing kit and first-aid kit in your car. If it is hot outside, being prepared means carrying water with you to stay properly hydrated. I think most of us entertainers can alleviate a lot of the problems we face if we are simply more conscious of being more prepared then we are. We often spend more time on the tricks and forget about the simple things that are also very important to the success and outcomes of our performances. If we can take a step back and really plan out and prepare our routines and shows, I think we all would benefit so greatly from it. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I'm working early close-up, and worked the magicians luncheon yesterday (Friday). Everything at the Castle is well run, they treat performers very well, and working for a few celebrities is always fun. Had Robert Culp (I Spy) and Robert Blake (Barretta) in the audience last night! Lessons Learned On The Street -------------------------------------------- Message by Jeff McBride (US) Street Magic: Street magic is one of the fastest growing new styles of magic, yet it is one of the oldest forms of magic as well! Today, there are many successful magicians that began their careers working the streets. The streets are a place where a beginner can go and get real world experience. When I first moved to New York City, I had the pleasure of studying with the man who literally wrote the book on Street Magic. Jeff Sheridan and I met in the mid-1970s in New York City. Over the years, I have met many of the top "classical" street performers from all over the world, including Jim Cellini, Chris Capeheart, and Gazzo, and I have learned something from every one of them. There is also a new breed of internet street magicians, like Cyril, Marco Tempest, and David Blaine, and they have lessons to teach us as well.... The world is changing. Old School The old school street performers are very low-tech and high-touch. Their effects must be able to be performed in the round. They have to play for small audiences as well as large audiences. New School The new school techno-mage designs effects that are often specifically created to play for "the home viewer." Many of these effects are shocking, get spread as viral videos, and reach a global viewership. Years ago, a young magician might upgrade their stage show by adding an illusion, such as a zigzag or sub trunk. Today's new magicians are getting a high-def video camera as the upgrade to their shows. The amazing thing is that some kid living in the boondocks can make a clever magic video at home, and be seen by thousands, perhaps millions of people. Twenty years ago, this was unheard of. Street magic, and the internet, are changing the way we experience magic. Mystery School I have been very blessed in my life to have traveled the world with my show. Street performing has taught me many important lessons: how to draw a crowd how to take command of an audience how to sustain their attention how to use audience participation how to deliver my message clearly ... oh yes, and how to get good money for something that I love to do! Many of the lessons that I learned in the school of hard knocks are ones that I still use today, whether I am designing a corporate show, a theater show, a casino show, or even when we design a show to play a luxury ocean liner. I've learned many tricks of the trade and secrets that make a great street magic show. These lessons can help you. I will be sharing these secrets with many of our friends at the Magic School, October 9, 10 and 11th. http://www.magicalwisdom.com/events/view/395 Magic And Meaning "Magic is the art of reaching into a deeper reality and bringing gifts from it into the ordinary world" -Robert Moss The Magic and Meaning Conference is a distinctive, annual small-group conference that focuses on creating meaningful magic routines, effective scripts, and new venues for performance. If you love magic, storytelling, motivational speaking, the philosophy of magic - or want to learn more about it - this is the place to be! The 2009 conference will feature Keynote Addresses by Jeff McBride, Eugene Burger, Robert E. Neale, and Lawrence Hass. The conference also features a select number of Short Talks by conference attendees on subjects relating to the themes of the conference. Also, the conference will offer interactive small group sessions as well as "works in progress" shows where we create a safe and fun space to try new ideas and get valuable feedback on your magic. http://www.magicalwisdom.com/events/view/392 China Magic Magic is exploding in China. Recently, a Taiwanese magician named Lu Chen appeared on the biggest Chinese New Year's television show. He only did three close-up effects, but it made a huge impression on the Chinese viewers. Now, the entire country is crazy for magic. I experienced this recently, at the World Championships in Beijing, and I took a few videos, too! You can see them on my internet television channel here: http://streetofcards.tv/channel/27/jeff-mcbride/ McBride Magic World Tour Our entire company is off to Shenzhen, China, to a huge theme park called Happy Valley. http://www.chinahighlights.com/shenzhen/attraction/happy-valley.htm See you on the road, or here in Las Vegas!!
