Tenyo Still Alive And Well -------------------------------------------- Message by Yuki Kadoya (Japan) I can say Tenyo is still alive and well. I have my friends at Tenyo and they just released their new product line for 2010. This year's product line is much better than the last few years. Here's the link (in Japanese): http://www.magicpierrot.com/smds/ Tenyo also produce small tricks with some famous Japanese animation characters in 2010 (this product line just sell in Japan.) My great friend, Steve Cohen also translated Japanese instructions into English. -------------------------------------------- 4. More information at http://www.magicsam.com/magicweek.asp -------------------------------------------- 5. More Remarkable Magic #13 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) Steve Dacri: Master Close Up Magician. Before I begin I would like to correct an error I made in last week's column. The correct web address for the highly talented Jason Andrews is www.jasonandrewsmagic.com I was delighted how many people emailed me to tell me that I am not alone in my opinion that Jason is a magic star in the making. The first time I heard Steve Dacri's name was when I was working the 'Magic Cellar' in San Francisco back in the mid '70s. Along with Daryl and Martin Lewis he was a big favorite in the club. It was a couple of years till I met him in person and we have been good friends ever since. The first time we actually met was at a Magic Castle 'Friday Lunch' and Steve has never let me forget it! He had dropped by prior to a business meeting and I innocently introduced him to the joys of a 'Kamikaze.' The trouble with those darn shots is that they are way too easy to drink and far more potent than they have any right to be. After a while I noticed that Steve was missing from our group, I assumed he had left for his appointment. This was far from correct as it turned out. Steve had wandered upstairs to Bill Larsen's office and deciding he might be better served to have a quiet lay down rather than continue our party downstairs. Once inside Bill's office, Steve stretched out on the sofa and went into a deep sleep. When Bill came upstairs to his office (possibly with the same idea in mind) he found Steve doing his best Rip Van Winkle impression. Always a man of compassion and understanding Bill left him to sleep it off. Needless to say Steve missed his meeting that afternoon. Ever since I have followed Steve's career with interest, as he is one of the few performers who has really managed to turn close-up magic into a big time magic attraction. Steve thinks big, performs big and delivers the goods big time. His act is really worth studying for anyone interested in making a full time (and highly lucrative) living performing close-up magic. You never see Dacri following where other performers have been performing; he is the kind of guy who opens rooms and creates opportunities. A lot of close-up performers are kind of' passive but not Steve, he defines the term 'Go Getter.' Steve realizes that breaks come to those who create them.  He recently set his sights on Vegas and has been performing his show at a number of venues that probably never even thought about hiring a magician until he pitched and sold them on the idea. Once the door is open Steve steps right in and does the vital second stage in selling a show - he really delivers the goods. When lay people see him perform they are fully convinced that they have seen the best. His combination of self-promotion and performance are a winning ticket that has kept him at the top of his chosen field for decades. Check out Steve's www.magicwebchannel.com and you will see what I mean. It is not easy to take small magic and sell it big and Steve accomplishes it superbly - even if he is a bit of a lightweight in the 'Kamikaze' department! I have been receiving some great reaction to my new blog 'Remarkable Magic' and the various stories, photos, interviews and videos that I have been featuring. The link is http://nowmagic.info/nowmagic/ why not bookmark it or better still RSS it and check out what's going on there on a regular basis. -------------------------------------------- 6. A Really Bad Experience - #139 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com "How was your show this weekend?" "Do NOT ask!!!" Ever have a conversation with a fellow magician or friend that sort of went this route? Chances are we all have. It is inevitable that every performer at some point in time will come across what I refer to as the client from hell. It is that client that no matter what you do or how professional you are, they simply do not know you exist and yell at you for taking up too much of their oxygen. The only good that ever comes from the experience is the fact that you have a great story to share at the next magic convention. I recently had such a client like this and in over 22+ years of performing magic, I can safely say I have never met anyone or organization so completely clueless in my entire life. So if you will, this is my story..well more of a rant or vent but they always say to heal you must first get it out. Kelly and I were scheduled to perform 7 shows over 2 days for a large festival/fair style event. We have done these numerous times and it is a perfect fit for the niche family-style markets we tend to perform for. So what could possibly go wrong you ask? Allow me to explain my own horror story. Feel free to laugh hysterically or stare at your monitor in disbelief. The only thing I will say is that every one of these happened to us over the span of 6 hours. - I call the client up and no one picks up the phone after 2 weeks of trying. I finally call and tell the person who I am and he hangs up. Odd I think but I press onwards. - I decide to send an email as perhaps that is a better way this client may like to work. After 4 attempts of trying to get answers to some basic questions (to allow us to meet their needs for the event) I get a response back that basically makes me realize a monkey or kindergartener must have hijacked this guys computer and wrote the answers for him. - I am then told to contact his friend as he can handle the details. Finally I am getting somewhere. NOPE. I call this new contact and he says to me, "why are you calling me? He told you to call me? Why would he do that? I do not have any information at all. Call him back." Confused I press forward. - I arrive at the event on day 1 and approach one of 7 guys on my way to finding my parking spot. Each person's conversation went something like this, "who are you? A magician? Musician? Oh magic shows? We have a magic show today? No one told me that. Where to park? I have no idea. Your contact? I am not sure where he is? Parking? Um...er go and see the next guy up there." Yeah this is going to be a fun day. - I finally pull up to a parking spot and realize my stage is 2 blocks away. After lugging my equipment to the stage area I realize my stage is a 4 inch high by 8 foot by 4 foot platform constructed by what must have been 4th graders. However, the show must go on. - After setting up, the client finally shows up an hour later. Ok great I think. I can introduce myself and get things squared away. WRONG. Instead of being introduced to the client, I had to stand there and listen to him rant on for 10 minutes about some clown who was horrible and whom he did not even see that day and whom he apparently was upset about. - As he turns to walk away I hear him ask a question I thought kind of strange for a client, "Oh what times are your shows?" I thought to myself that is was rather odd that the client who hired me had no idea of the show times he even told me about. But I told him what we agreed upon and he moved on. - Time for our sound check before our first show. I decide to keep the music very low when doing the sound check just to make sure I am not interfering with the band music going on. 3 minutes was all the time my sound was on for the check. Within that time period, 10 people came over to complain and voice their opinion of 1) how it is too loud 2) that I cannot be using music at all 3) who am I 4) why am I there and 5) can you not do that. Sad part was 6 of those people were the client's own staff members. - I decided to be a solutions provider and ask for a schedule so that I can arrange my shows during the band's downtime or breaks. Well we find out there is no schedule, we are not even scheduled anywhere and the bands apparently are playing nonstop for the solid 7 hours we are there. - When I suggested that we perform during their breaks or for them to turn down the music for my shows I received a comment back much like this, "well we cannot do that. We have music all day long and have it loud for people. They like it that way.". Um yeah gee thanks. - I end up doing all 4 shows that day without my show music at all. I end up performing to whatever the band played on the stage 40 yards from us. - During the 3rd show the client walks across my stage and moves my speaker and starts to tamper with the plugs. He then walks over to my sound system counsel area and starts to TRY and monkey around with it. The only reason he did not was because he could not get to it. Shocked at the fact anyone would even do that, I remain in character and finish the show. - Then comes the crowning moment of the entire event. Before my 4th show the client comes over and asks me in a sarcastic and rude tone, "Can I give you some advice?" I listen to this client basically belittle my entire show and tell me how I should run and do my show for the next 10 mins. He then proceeds to tell me what I should do for the last show step by step. All of this while he never even saw my show in the first place. So why am I sharing this with you? Well to prove a few important points. No matter how experienced you are as a performer or how many shows you have done, you are going to have moments like this. It is simply bound to happen. But to me the power of being a professional is in the ability to adjust to things beyond our control. We simply must learn to find the right attitude in spite of the conditions we may find ourselves in. When trials come your way, you have a choice. You can throw up your hands in total frustration, give up, redo your entire show, wallow in self-doubt and be filled with resentment. Or you can learn from the experience and move ahead trusting that you did the best you can and will continue to do so. Our capacity to adjust to situations like this is the real secret to success in magic. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. - I would like to let everyone know that I just released a NEW book and E-Book to the magic Community. "Blue and Gold! We Are All Connected - Tony Brook ------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone (Tony Brook) Europe In last week's issue, the Editor's message mentioned my upcoming lecture in Vegas & that I would be starting a regular column in January 2010 and that is indeed true. However, there are moments that bring the Spirit of International Magic in close connection; I couldn't wait until January! I just had to send a few words in advance. I've never met Nick Lewin but I hope to remedy that in a few weeks when I arrive in Vegas. I know of Nick via his many writings & via several mutual friends. Indeed both he and I were privileged to be 'tutored' by the legendary Ken Brooke. I'm sure both Nick and I share very similar memories of that wonderful Magic studio in the Soho district of London, England. In the good old days when Soho had real character. In those great days, Pat Page, my 'mentor' worked the counter at the original Davenport's location opposite the British Museum. Those memories will make for another article in the future. Back to Nick Lewin. Formidable Magician. Excellent Magic Writer. Yes. But more! Check out www.magicwebchannel.com my dear pal Steve Dacri's latest FAT BOY movie; it has a link there. Nick's in the movie. I already told Steve that someone should give Nick a BAFTA. For the uninitiated, that's the British equivalent of an Oscar. Some would say even better! In Nick's last piece he mentioned a young upcoming performer, Jason Andrews. I've met him. I've seen him perform. I have only superlatives to aptly describe him. If Kellar, Dunniger, Devant, Thurston, Pollock (who actually did and called him excellent) and the like were seated in the front row they would give him a standing ovation. Tiny Bubbles, who is a Vegas icon, & a good friend of my family, knows a great deal about the Art of Entertainment in Magic. One his students was Jason Andrews. When I am not on stage or TV, I stay well away from the Prediction business! However, I must join Nick Lewin, Johnny Thompson, Jeff McBride and other major names who have predicted great things for Jason. Another very good Vegas pal of mine, Frank Zak, who is a World Class Photographer and leading Magician, has taken a truly Magical and Technically brilliant shot of Jason. Check it out on www.fzphoto.com. Is this a plug? Yes. Unashamedly. We are all connected and must support and praise talent in all its forms. Another good friend, Jon Racherbaumer (an article on him is in the works) always rightly states that we must spread good Karma, especially in the International World of Magic. Yes indeed. We Are All Connected. -------------------------------------------- 8. Traveling with Paul Romhany -------------------------------------------- Message by Paul Romhany (NZ) What a hectic time it's been these past few weeks. We flew out of Vancouver, Canada a few days ago, and are currently in New Zealand for a few days until we fly over to Asia for a few months performing and lecturing. All our household goods and magic props are in storage in New Brunswick for a few months until we find a place in Auckland where we want to live. I am so used to having access to all my books and props it can be frustrating at times when I want to work on an idea or routine only to realise it's not handy. Last week, while in Vancouver I did get to meet up with some very good friends and catch up on the latest magic products. My good friend Andrew Gerard, who is the only person to actually be a consultant for Chris Angel, David Blaine and Keith Barry was in town for a few days so spent some time with him. He is such a genius when it comes to creating magic, and anybody who has a major television show is now contacting him as their lead consultant. His ideas are truly ingenious and he has such a fresh approach to his magic and his innovative way of thinking. Over coffee he showed me his version of Three Fly and while I perform and am familiar with most of the versions out there, his blew me away. He let me film him with my iphone so I could practice it on the fourteen hour flight to New Zealand. I feel very honored to call Andrew a close friend and while he may not be a household name, his effects are certainly being performed by magicians all over the world. If I were to have my own TV special he is the first person I would call upon to be the consultant. He is now moving in to the producing and directing side and is currently in LA filming the new Keith Barry TV special. The other friends I managed to catch up with included Tony Chris, Matthew Johnson and Christopher Taylor. All of them very productive and busy in their own fields of magic. Matthew and Christopher showed me their latest release which will be launched in November called Alone. It is one of the most incredible devices I have ever seen for a mentalist. The possibilities are endless. Christopher is well known for his electronic effects, and this is by far the best thing I've seen. The gimmick is concealed inside something so ordinary that you actually get the spectator to hold on to it. They are doing all the work and yet have no idea. I was very fortunate to get one of these gimmicks and I've been playing around with it ever since - and absolutely fooling everybody with it. As I said, this will be launched at MindVention in November and if you are there, be sure to check it out. You can find out more by going to TaylorImagineering website. Product wise things have been busy with the new release of The Amazing Twenty Dollar Bill Trick. This is a routine I released with professional comedy writer Hal Spear. This is based on the Vanishing Bandanna idea but without the mess!! It is a signed borrowed bill routine and has a comedy voice over. It is available from all good magic shops around the world. As you can see, between our busy performing schedule, traveling, selling our house and putting everything in to storage and releasing products on the market life is never dull. So far it's looking to be one of the busiest seasons ever from October until January with almost every night completely booked out with corporate work overseas. My cruise ship agent is a little annoyed because he wants us to do the cruise season down this part of the world. Perhaps when we get back in February we'll do a few months - or just play golf! -------------------------------------------- 9. IBM British Ring Convention -------------------------------------------- Message by Barbi The 73rd annual convention was held 23 - 27 September 2009 @ Southport, Lancashire. President Trevor Lewis created a first by singing his specially written official opening of the convention and Secretary John Pye welcomed the officials and overseas visitors including International President of FISM Eric Eswin and IBM Past International President John R Browne lll who was standing in for President Jack White who had been taken ill and hospitalised just days before his trip to the convention - and sent his greetings. In welcoming the overseas visitors John forgot to mention NZ - but still thinks I'm a Yorkshire lass even though I have been away from UK for 24 years. No sooner had the dignitaries left the stage than the curtain was up on the first show and the convention was in full swing with compere Paul Ray introducing Mark Shortland, Johathan Shotton and Sean Haydon. Dave Cass providing music and Neil Roberts Stage Director (as they did for the majority of the convention events). A variety of lectures where on offer with Hayashi - close up, Brando & Sylvana - explaining their thinking on creating the 'character' of the act, Mike Stokes and Gerry Luff - baloon workshop, Sean Taylor - mentalism, Terry Herbert - Entertaining Children, Henry Mayol - close up and parlour magic, Ed Ellis - close up, John Kimmons - comedy magic and vent, Thom Peterson - close up, Tyler Wilson -  Pavel - 'Best of' from his many ideas/effects through the years. David and Dania in conversation with John Pye answered questions submitted and from the floor re their lives and careers. The Jeffery Atkins Memorial lecture was given by John Styles MBE and was an illustrated talk covered his life in magic. Eddie Dawes again organised and presented his 'Thanks for the Memories' show combining some of the history of our art with fine magic from his performers - Jonathan Shotton, Bertie Pearce, Alan Shaxon, James Long and Louise. Unfortunately this had to be Eddie's swansong - due to family circumstances - and it was to a well deserved standing ovation with loud applause that Eddie left the stage. For those of us with an interest in the history, collecting and preservation of magic Eddie Dawes also again organised and presented 'More History of Mystery' where we were able to enjoy illustrated talks on The Great Carmo by Trevor Dawson, Katterfelto by David Patton-Williams, Milton Woodward by David Budd and The Great Chefalo by Marco Pusterla. The British Ring Shield Competition - Stage - and Zina Bennett Trophy Competition - Close Up - were also part of a packed calendar or events as was Ali Bongo Micro Marathon (an opportunity for anyone who wants to present a short show to anyone who wants to watch), followed by the Thursday night (stage) show. For those wanting late night action there was, as always in recent years, The Fringe. As always there was a willing band prepared to volunteer their services to entertain on Thursday afternoon at the hospital and special venue shows. Ladies were catered for (and a few men by special permission for the first time in its history ) at the Ladies Afternoon. The reason for the mens interest was the guest speaker Duggie Chapman presenting an illustrated talk 'From Musical to Variety' showing some of the stars of the 1960/70's entertaining and sometimes performing tributes to stars of the past. A convention banquet - for those wishing to attend - was followed by a Late Gala show of Brando & Silvana, Pavel, Soma, and Peki, compered by Tony Rix. The International Close Up Gala featured our lecturers Ed Ellis, Hayashi, Henry Mayol, Thom Peterson, and Tyler Wilson with the addition of John an der Put from UK. The International Gala Show was hosted by Aonghus McAnally (and I was not the only one surprised to hear that he is son of the well known actor Ray McAnally). Dania Kaseeva (half of David and Dania) showed her hoola hoop act from circus days as well as later partnering her husband David in their quick change act. There was mentalism with Sean Taylor, manipulation with Timo Marc, a blindfold Samurai sword performance by Hayashi, mystifying production with Necheperenko, and illusion by Martyn James. Interested in Childrens Magic there was the annual 'Showtime' with Doug Gregg, John Kimmons, High Jinx and Richard Cadell and Sooty, and the IBM Clowns. Even Juniors were catered for with a special Juniors workshop organised specially for them - no-one over 18 admitted. It was also heartening to see the closing show of the convention a 'Stars of the Future' from juniors. Those wanting to purchase new items for their shows there were many dealers (from UK and overseas) offering a wide range of magic and ancilliary props in the spacious Dealers magical trade fair area throughout the convention. In aid of the British Ring Welfare & Benevolent Fund there was also an auction of props donated, some bargains to be had and a good sum raised for the cause. The incoming president Shirley Ray, along with her consort Dave Cass closed the convention and asked all present to reassemble in Easterbourne next year. My main reason for going to this convention was to catch up with many of the magical friends from UK and around the world I have, thankfully, had through the years and to meet new ones. I was able to do this but there were regulars missing due to health and other circumstances, and some attending with increasing age and health problems which was a reminder to me of how valuable our magic friendships are. -------------------------------------------- 10. 30th New Zealand International Magicians Convention -------------------------------------------- Message by Mick Peck President Shore City Magicians Club Inc www.scmc.co.nz The Incredible 30th NZ International Magicians Convention June 5-7, 2010  Auckland, New Zealand Registrations are now open for The Incredible 30th New Zealand International Magicians Convention! Radnevsky - 3 Week Run At La Mama -------------------------------------------- Message by Peter Samelson (US) Radnevsky's Real Magic For the past year, Peter Samelson has been developing a very unique theatre piece in conjunction with the experimental theatre company The Talking Band and magician, Dennis Kyriakos. Not just a magic show, not just a play with magic, the piece is actually a sophisticated collaboration between the two arts. Entertaining and funny with great musical and multimedia effects, the play explores the shadow side of an artist's life, touching on themes of mastery, mentoring, aging and death. Based on Peter's signature style of storytelling magic, Radnevsky's Real Magic will be making its world premiere this Friday at LaMaMa Theatre and will continue through October 25th. Latest Update On MINDvention -------------------------------------------- Message by Danny Archer (US) On Sunday the first attendee show will start at 1:00 pm. This will lead into what promises to be an interesting panel discussion. Sean Taylor and a few of his mates from Australia will be attending MINDvention again. These gentlemen, created, produced, marketed and performed their own full evening mentalism show down under. The show is called Out Of Your Mind (A four man, two hour mentalism show with almost entirely original material). They kept copious notes on the development of the show and they have agreed to present a panel on the nuts and bolts of how they took their concept from the page to the stage. They will show a few clips, answer some questions and fill you in on how they did it, and how you can do it as well. We are doubly fortunate in that Mr. Taylor will also be the Master of Ceremonies for the All-Star Show. For those of you who saw Sean when he lectured and performed at the 2007 MINDvention, you know what an accomplished and professional entertainer he is. The moving up of the schedule will also allow us to give more time to the two mini-lectures scheduled for Sunday. Devin Knight is well known for his many, clever magic and mentalism effects that he has created and released to the community. I heard from enough people telling me that one hour was not enough time, so we have increased his lecture time by 50%! Devin will also have a table in the dealer's room showing off his line. Sharing his spot is Berk Eratay. Berk is probably not as well known in the US, but in his native Turkey where he was the winner of the Phenomenon TV program that is not the case. As last year's MINDvention Berk blew everyone away in the attendee show and now he back to lecture and share some of the secrets that led to his TV success. His specialty is Horror Mentalism and I for one can't wait to see what he has in store for us. We have also pushed the start of the Christopher Carter show up a few minutes. Chris will be performing the very same show he does several times a week for colleges and corporate audiences around the country. It will be so great to see a real mentalism pro doing his bread and butter routines. That will leave us just enough time to squeeze in one more fascinating presenter. As Special Artist Consultant to The Next Uri Geller television series, Joe Atmore has traveled around the world consulting for the franchise in such countries as Germany, the Netherlands, Russia and Turkey. Atmore's first experience on the series was consulting for a mentalist on the American version of the show, NBC's Phenomenon. During the run of that show, he was signed up to consult, not just for a single competitor, but to assist with the entire television production in Europe (and even making a guest starring appearance in Russia). This has lead to hundreds of hours of live broadcast time under his belt, and even more hours of behind the scenes happenings in the making of the series. In his lively talk for MINDvention, Joe will provide attendees a rare glimpse into the world's most popular mentalism show. And that's Sunday's schedule. On Monday we have added in a late presentation by Jim Callahan after the Andy Nyman lecture. Here is what Jim told me you can expect; "Much of what I cover has to do with the creation of reality, audience programming, compliance techniques, promotion, compliance based hypnosis, and disclaimers. My personal promotional tool that might be called the opposite of a disclaimer, The integration of light presentations into a mentalism show and the concept of presentation/scripting/backstory being a large part the method and also the value of being a presenter opposed to being the exhibit." Whew! That's it. I can't add one more event or presenter to what promises to be an incredible mentalism convention. Mental Epic Book Underway ------------------------------------------- Message by Paul Romhany (NZ) Recently I started collecting routines from magicians around the world relating to Hen Fetch's Mental Epic Board. This also includes any routines using the one ahead principle. So far I have gathered a great source of material from people such as Dan Garrett, Banachek, Richard Webster, Matthew Johnson, Andrew Gerard, Ed Fowler, David O'Connor to name a few. I am still collecting routines and if you would like to be a part of this book then please email me your routine to paul@chaplinmagic.com I would love to hear from any magicians who have performed or come up with ideas, twists and full routines using this principle in magic. It doesn't have to be the Mental Epic board but ideas pertaining to the basic idea. -------------------------------------------- 14. 2010 Blackpool Magic Convention -------------------------------------------- If you have not already registered for the 2010 Blackpool Magic Convention (19 - 21 February) you are advised to do so quickly for the signs are that it is going to be yet another sell out. Review For Samraj Show -------------------------------------------- Message by Dave Upfold (NZ) The Magician Samraj's - World of Illusion Show took place at the Westlake Boys High School Auditorium Theatre on Saturday night in front of a sellout crowd. Never before in New Zealand has a Magician / Illusionist show recently attracted such a huge door/pre sales only paying audience. His show is truly professional-The amount of preparation and props is staggering 3 different levitation Illusions, Shadow Box Illusions to name a few & a fabulous mentalist routine that had the audience totally engrossed, a costume chance with every one of his 15 plus Magic / Illusions added to the spectacle 2 Indian Rope acrobat's doing their act hanging from a rope suspended 10 meters about the stage. Magician Samraj, Magic assistants and dancers put on a Show that would not be out of place at any Theatre or Casino around the world. The lighting, sound effects and backdrops, changing with every act were world class and a pleasure to see reminiscent of golden age touring shows of years gone by but with a modern theme. The just over 2 hour Show had the audience on the edge of their seat. One effect had him vanish a small silk, and then from a small first shown tiny empty container he produces a 1 meter wide silk/ sari that his assistances pull out and walk into the audience to the back of the auditorium and back again, a distance of at least 40 meters. Truly an amazing show that was advertised widely to the public and was appreciated by all that where there to see this Indian Super Star in Action. More Shows of this high standard, I know will be greatly appreciated and supported by a New Zealand public that have never seen such Theatrical Magic and Showmanship recently. . After the show I went back stage to meet the man, what a humble and fantastic person who introduced me to his fellow entertainers and crew, his only regret was not meeting any NZ Magicians while touring. Come back soon Magician Samraj. You have shown New Zealand that Magic is appreciated by the people of this country. ----------------------------------------------- 17.
