Paul Daniels - Rumors Of My Death! -------------------------------------------- Message from Paul Daniels (UK) Just to let you know that like Mark Twain, rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated. For those who would like to know it's all written up, with some humour, in my blog on my site. Sure, I was unwell and at times it got rough, but at least now I know I don't have angina and I do feel like I am on the road to being me again. It's a bit of a bummer not being allowed to lift stuff for a while, so I am taking life easy and doing jobs I have been putting off like copying tapes and putting stuff onto eBay (even posters for those who collect such things). I don't have a show until the 28th so that planning turned out to be fortuitous. To all those who got in touch my thanks and to absolutely everybody, a Happy 2010. Paul D -------------------------------------------- 3. Bad Levitation Hoop From China Magic -------------------------------------------- A note from Walter Blaney (US) The letter below is one I wrote to, in my opinion, a disreputable magic company named China Magic. They have tried to copy a number of tricks from well known magic inventors. One of them is my Miracle Levitation Hoop. The company cleverly does not disclose any names on their website, so a customer cannot know who they are dealing with, or who to complain to. To buy something from China Magic one has to take cash to Western Union and wire it to China Magic. This I did, not knowing if I would even receive a shipment. A month later I got their levitation hoop, which they advertise as mine. It doesn't work, and it is unusable. Thankfully it is nothing like my levitation hoop. It works by a different method. To be more accurate, it doesn't work at all. So anyone is welcome to buy the hoop from China Magic if they so desire. After reading the details below, I doubt anyone would want to. I just wanted to tell magicians everywhere that it is not my Zaney Blaney Miracle Levitation Hoop. China Magic is only dishonestly trying to make magicians think it is. I was willing to invest $1800 just to find out what sort of hoop they were really selling. I hope this information will save heartache to fellow magicians. Buyers beware. To see a short video clip of China Magic's faulty levitation hoop not working, go to: http://www.walterblaney.com/chinamagichoop.html Cheers, Walter Zaney Blaney walter@walterblaney.com walterblaney.com/illusions _______________________________________ December 30, 2009 Dear China Magic: My name is Walter Blaney. First, I ordered one of your Miracle Levitation Hoops you advertise on your website. My associate Dan Summers and I wired you your price of $1550 plus $300 more for shipping. The hoop finally arrived one month later. Your hoop simply does not work. Of course you already know this. I have enclosed a video showing how the hoop will not close, thus making it useless. I would like to ask for our money to be returned in full, including the wasted shipping cost. Second, you have brazenly named your hoop the Miracle Levitation Hoop. You have stolen the title of my hoop, simply leaving off my name from the well known Zaney Blaney Miracle Levitation Hoop . You have also stolen the ad copy word for word from my illusion website, and you are using the copyrighted video of David Copperfield using my hoop on my website. You are trying to deceive magicians into thinking they are buying my hoop at a cut rate price, when instead they are getting your poorly designed hoop which does not even work. I am asking you to completely remove the stolen ad copy you have taken from my website, remove the copyrighted video of David Copperfield using my hoop, and rename your hoop so no one will further think it is my Miracle Levitation Hoop. You have two weeks to do these two things I ask. After 60 years in professional magic, my name and reputation are well known among magicians everywhere. If you choose not to comply, then after two weeks I plan to make it known worldwide in magic just what you are doing. You know of course the internet reaches everywhere. Again, TWO WEEKS. That means answer by January 15th. I will await your compliance before taking further action. If I don't get a reply from you this letter will be seen by everyone in magic worldwide. I think you also owe me an apology for what you are doing. You should be ashamed for operating your magic business in such a dishonest manner. Walter Zaney Blaney -------------------------------------------- 4. Blackpool Magic Convention News -------------------------------------------- Message by Derek Lever (UK) The exciting news is that Blackpool Magicians Club's bid to obtain the European Championships from FISM has been accepted and the FISM European Championships will be held as part of the Blackpool Convention in 2011. The length of the Convention will be slightly extended in that it will commence on Friday morning at 9.00 a.m. and much of the Convention will be dedicated to world class Close-Up and Stage competitions. A meeting will be held with the Presidium (Committee of FISM) during Blackpool Convention week to draft the plans for the conference. Entry details for competitors will be released as soon as possible. This will be the very first official FISM European Championships ever staged. Another major coup for Blackpool Magicians' Club. We will of course, as previously advertised be presenting the FISM World Championships in 2012 in July (as well as the normal Blackpool Convention in February, 2012). The official FISM 2012 website will be launched in the coming weeks. Registrations for the Blackpool Convention in February 2010 are at an all time high and is predicted that we will sell out before the event. Registrations for the FISM World Championships in 2012 have already exceeded expectations and we believe that this event will also sell out. The February Issue Of Genii, The Conjurors' Magazine -------------------------------------------- Message by Richard Kaufman (US) The February issue of Genii, The Conjurors' Magazine, is now starting to reach subscribers all around the world. If you don't subscribe to Genii, then you're missing our big cover story on comic maestro Michael Finney, whose success as one of the funniest magicians is also the story of overcoming a disability and making life work for you rather than against you. Dustin Stinett, one of my favorite writers, spent many hours with Finney for this biographical treat which reveals many previously unknown aspects of Finney's life. Current IBM President Jack White looks like an ordinary guy. Hey he was the local news anchor in Southern California for years and everyone knows they're the folks you can trust. But Jack also has a secret: he used to put on Midnight Zombie Spook Shows at movie theaters and Steve Bryant takes a fond, nostalgic look back at "Zombieland," a period in time a half century ago when a few cents bought you a midnite ticket to a movie theater, a horror movie, and the chance to be terrorized by monsters running amok in the audience. Danny Orleans is a professional magician of all colors, and also has been doing product reviews for Genii for many years. His first magic book for the public is coming out in March and it has a novel concept. Called "MagicScratchers," the book contains self-working mental tricks that are designed to fool the reader, and the answers are revealed with the type of scratch-offs you find on lottery tickets. Read all about it and then buy this great book! * Tom Stone continues his widely-read and acclaimed column Lodestones, this time preparing you for the big plunge: putting on your own show. And he's serious. Don't make him come all the way from Sweden to get you started! * Jon Racherbaumer writes about the Too-Perfect Theory * Tom Frank remembers Jim Cellini, master of the street magicians * Paul Osborne creates a new illusion just for you--make the lower half of your favorite female vanish while the upper half lives! * Cardopolis is the premiere installment of David Britland's new column on card magic, this time with a version of Any Card at Any Number that ANY one can do. * David Acer brings you another Magicana filled with great tricks, including Christian Engblom's famous routine with wooden matches that could be a feature of your close-up performance and is worth the price of a subscription. * David Regal reviews the latest tricks; Joe M. Turner reviews the latest videos; and David Britland reviews the latest books. All of this is yours for the astoundingly low price of $6--last time I looked, a candy bar cost almost as much. You can purchase this issue or subscribe to Genii for only $54 for 12 issues at www.geniimagazine.com Also, my first magic book written for the public is now shipping: Knack Magic Tricks is 256 pages with 450 color photos and lots of great tricks. You can buy it for only $13.46 on amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/Knack-Magic-Tricks-Step-Step/dp/1599217791/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1264095053&sr=1-1 It's also available on amazon.co.uk: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Knack-Magic-Tricks-Step-Step/dp/1599217791/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1264095121&sr=8-1 -------------------------------------------- 6. More Remarkable Magic #25 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) A Few KBs more about iTricks. I got a tremendous response from my hastily written column last week about iTricks for those lucky owners of iPhones/iTouches. While I was basically writing to draw attention to Carl Andrews great new iTrick ‘No Freakin’ Way’ but I realized I had touched on a topic that deserved further exploration. Incidentally I had to laugh when someone I showed Carl’s trick to recently responded with those exact sentiment—though not those exact words! With over 37 billion apps available through iTunes (I may be off by a billion or two) I want to add to my list of essentials for the digital wizards out there, in order to save a little search time. I was delighted to have my attention drawn to several other apps that certainly deserve precious real estate space on your iPhone. First and foremost I have to mention Penn & Teller’s ‘P&T Chat Magic Trick,’ which is another gem of an app where all the action appears to take place in the spectators hands. It was brought to my attention and is a stunner. I had initially failed to purchase it only because I knew it involved texting, which is something I have never really learned to handle with any degree of proficiency. To my delight after downloading it I realized that not a single jot of texting knowledge was required. What you have is a beautifully thought out piece of interactive magic that has some very cool built in ways to customize it. Whether or not you will get the highly charged sexual reaction from the ladies that the humorous explanation video depicts, is another matter! What you do have is one of the finest pieces of iMagic available, and it will cost you less than the price of a Latte at Starbucks. It is a hip and smooth piece of digital magic, and has all the quirky, offbeat charm of magic’s funniest duo that created it. Last week I also missed out on mentioning another really superb app for any magician with ‘the gift of the gab’ called ‘Marty’s Psypic’ which is an ultra cool revelation of a card by someone holding it in their hand in an old ‘family portrait.’ I can almost hear McComb’s, ‘joke by joke’ rundown of the family members before reaching the magical pay off. I can’t help but also put in a plug for ‘Andy Warhol Quotes’ where for less than a buck you can enjoy quotes on a daily basis from one of the funniest, wisest and most prophetic artist/philosophers of our time. The last statement can be repeated word for word about the app ‘Bob Dylan Quotes.’ Some final pieces of iMagic etiquette, PLEASE do not ever start a trick by saying; “I want to show you something with my phone” or “Look what my phone can do.” Your phone should be as incidental and unimportant to the miracle they are about to see as your double lift is to your card work! In the same vein, although you might have 15 tricks on your phone, don’t feel the need to perform them all. As in so many things in life ‘Less is more.’ What is a good idea and a useful magical exercise is to try and link together a couple of separate tricks to add a kicker. One final thought, there are quite a few apps that can be twisted to magic ends that they were never intended for. Your job is to seek them out! Show Me A Trick - #151 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com How many times have you been out in public in a not performance situation and when someone realized you were a magician said, “Show me a trick?”. Probably quite a few times. My question is whether you should or should not oblige the person and why. I think by definition of a magician, one should have the ability to perform at all times. This is not to say one HAS to perform. If we are magicians, then by nature we should have the ability to perform anything at any time? That is the perception of what a magician does. We also cannot rush to the conclusion that a person is asking just to annoy you or just to see if they can figure stuff out. In many cases they have never seen a real magician that close before. Magic and magicians can be a very curious thing and people are curious about what we do. Also, they may be genuine in their interest to see magic. They may not mean any harm at all. Not always is a person asking, up to no good. We can never assume that. Many would argue that performing something is trying to prove something. They say you would not ask a mechanic to prove they can fix a car by fixing yours on the spot. You would not ask a doctor to cure you or prove his credentials. Now the analogy about the mechanic cannot really apply here. Sure you would not ask a mechanic to fix your car to prove he is a mechanic. However, in magic I do not think they are asking you to prove it. Remember that unlike a mechanic, we are entertainers. It is our goal to entertain people. A mechanic does not have that responsibility nor does a doctor. Like anything, we have to feel out the situation. You can always turn something down if you feel the person asking is not genuine. In many cases, they are not causing any harm at all. In this case, I am always happy to show them a simple effect or quick routine. By doing so, I am marketing myself and getting a chance to connect and network with someone. We can exchange names and possibly a business card. I never lose the opportunity to meet another prospect for my work. I also will not turn down an opportunity to share magic with someone else. This not me becoming a magic stalker. I never cram magic at someone. However, there are many times and opportunities for all magicians to make that little difference. I was in line a few times and a girl in front of me was crying or upset. It is very easy to do a simple magic trick just to make them smile or giggle. It may last 30 seconds, but the kid and the parent will really thank you for it. I think this is something all magicians can do and learn from. I think that most people in general will say “trick” not because they are trying to be mean or trying to degrade us. The simple point is that not many folks have ever really talked with or worked with a magician before. Many have seen one on TV or maybe at a festival. They get a perception in their mind as to what they think magic is about and what we do. I do not think they are doing it to be rude. If that is the case, then can't we learn to educate people? I do so in my marketing all the time. It is a way in which to get suspects and prospects to know who I am, what I am about and what makes me the professional I am. Often times their first questions to me seem uneducated. I know most of this is because they have never dealt with a magician before. I then work and educate them and through the process build a relationship with them. So if someone in public asks me to perform a “trick”, I am not sure I can always find fault with that. I cannot assume they are doing so to “place a low value” on me. They may be saying that because they are not yet educated. I think we can educate them a bit and have fun in the process. I think this is a natural course of action in the line of work we do. I am a firm believer that anyone and everyone is a potential prospect for the services you provide. If so, then why not open yourself to favorable opportunities when they present themselves. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. Tony Brook in Conversation with Dal Sanders - Part 3/End ------------------------------------------ Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA TB: How do you feel when you see magic in the movies or on TV? DS: Generally, I like magic on television and in films. It keeps the art ?top of mind with audiences and that means people are more likely to consider a magician when they need an entertainer. TB: Each of us has many “on the road” stories. What kind of difficulties do you have when traveling? DS: Remembering to pack enough underwear. TB: He! He! Well, I did ask!!! Well, that’s why they have Wal-Mart in every town! You and I know of stories from others and indeed ourselves where Wal-Mart, especially the 24 hour stores have helped during road trips in the US. You have traveled extensively, actually in all 50 States as I mentioned earlier and lectured to several Clubs. As we chatted earlier, I was at your Houston, Texas lecture. Truly Excellent. But there’s a “trial by fire “ story on your first ever lecture. Care to share it? DS: Sure. My first lecture was for a group of corporate entertainers that I am associated with. My lecture was sandwiched between lectures by Kevin James and Mac King. I didn’t know that they were going to be at the event until the day it took place. Needless to say, I was sweating cats with Kevin and Mac sitting in the audience. When I asked Aye Jaye (the man who booked me for the conference) why he didn’t tell me that they would also be there he simply asked if I would have agreed to do my lecture if I had known. I told him of course not and he just shrugged and said that’s why I didn’t tell you. That lecture went great and I have done many lectures since that time. TB: How do you find work? Do you use an agent or book yourself? DS: I use several agents but I also own an agency of sorts. Amazing Attractions is a co-op of entertainers who work together to share expenses, leads and resources in order to generate performance opportunities for the entire group. We offer magicians, jugglers, illusionists, clowns, mimes, fire-eaters, and other variety entertainers. When you call, you might speak to a magician, a clown, a juggler or any one of the other entertainers. The company takes 20% of the profits but no one gets a paycheck from that money, instead it is put back into the company for expenses like advertising, utilities or office/rehearsal space. I started this co-op because I believe that our business shouldn’t be competitive but collaborative. I have found that there is plenty of work out there for people who have a good act. TB: What was or is your favorite venue to perform at? DS: The Majestic Theater in my town…Dallas, Texas TB: Wow! I love that theater. I’ve never performed there but been in the audience. Great place . Great history. Project into the future. Where do you see yourself 5 to 10 years from now? DS: I would love to have a theater where my company and I could perform a beautiful show of magic and comedy from the heart much like Le Grande David in Beverly, MA. TB: Wouldn’t surprise me in the least if that happened. Just be sure to reserve me a seat. Front row of course and a Comp ticket!!! Dal it has been great. Thank you for conversing and sharing. DS: Tony, you are very welcome. The seat will have your name on it. TB: Thanks Dal. See you in The Green Room. (Hidden in this article are deliberate grammatical & spelling mistakes. The scholarships are made possible by a grant from the Society of American Magicians Magic Endowment Fund, which has provided scholarships to youngsters between the ages of 12 to 18 years for the past 19 years. The Magic Endowment Fund realizes that involvement in the magical arts can make a crucial difference in the lives of youngsters in their formative years. They develop magical skills that can help provide a positive mental attitude and a sense of accomplishment and achievement that can last their entire life. Magic camp is a wonderful place for youngsters to learn new skills and improve their performance in a convivial setting. Many magic campers have gone on to become full-time performers and all have been a credit to the magical arts. Candidates must be able to demonstrate talent and dedication to a magical performing arts discipline and financial need. Applications may be obtained by either writing to the S.A.M. Magic Endowment Fund, 15 Warren Street, Hackensack, NJ 07601, or by email, stating your mailing address, to Warren@kapsbarto.com. A copy of the application may also be downloaded from the S.A.M. website, www.magicsam.com The deadline for receipt of applications is May 15, 2010 -------------------------------------------- 13. Ellis In Wonderland - The Ebook -------------------------------------------- Message by Tim Ellis (Aust) It's finally finished and available at http://www.australianmagician.com/store Here's the info: At over 70 pages this ebook is filled with photos and illustrations is based on the hugely popular lecture and hit DVD of the same name. Featuring detailed teaching of a dozen great tricks: *** Ultimate Blades *** - Swallow six sharp blades, each one cuts paper and immediately goes into your mouth, no switching, and then bring them all out again threaded on a piece of string. Tim's method for this classic trick is diabolical AND practical! "Tim's Ultimate Blades is an excellent method." - Magic Magazine "...your work on the blades... great stuff, and by far the best routine I've ever seen." - Jeff McBride *** Credit Card Fax *** - The photo on your credit card vanishes and reappears on the spectator's credit card! But now you, in the photo, are holding their selected card! Astonishing and original close up that leaves the spectator with a great souvenir. *** Candle Tips *** - How to make a candle appear lit. - How to take a flame from a candle in your bare hand then return it. *** Deckstress *** - Your new favourite card trick! Possibly the most commercial card trick ever created. The spectator names any card from a face up spread (4H for example). On the back of the card is written "I knew you would choose the four of hearts". - Name Deckstress. On the back of the card is written "I knew you would choose the four of hearts David". - Corporate Deckstress. On the back of the card is written "Xerox knew you would choose the four of hearts". *** Deathslates *** - A great piece of bizarre magic perfect for Halloween, haunted houses or seance effects. It uses spirit slates and two decks of cards to create one of the eeriest climaxes to an effect you've ever seen. *** 7 Keys to Paradise *** - Finally a practical method for the class '7 Keys to Baldpate' plot. Absolutely foolproof with no gimmicked locks or electronics required. Plus you'll also get some great presentational ideas AND the truth behind the name 'Baldpate'. *** Jazz Cards *** - A totally 'hands off' card trick where the magician never touches the card, yet a card chosen by the spectator, in a deck shuffled and cut by the spectator, is FOUND by the spectator! You'll hate the method (it's too easy!) but you'll love doing this trick! *** Cellular Thinking *** - Mr Wizard gets an update. A two person telephone code that uses no codes! You can perform this IMMEDIATELY with electronics you already own. Imagine walking into a room, handing someone a business card with a phone number on it, asking them to choose or name ANY card then phone the number. The person on the other end of the line tells them what their card is - and more! *** Cash to Credit Card *** - Borrow a bill or three, fold them up and they instantly become a credit card! Can even be done in reverse. Great visual magic! *** Bill to Anything *** - Tim's solution to another classic plot. A bill is borrowed, signed, the serial number noted, THEN cut in quarters in full view of the spectators with no switching of pieces. They can see their signature and the correct serial number on the cut bill. Finally, three quarters are burned then found restored inside ANYTHING! Yes, the remaining quarter kept by the spectator fits! *** Shakespeare's Monte *** - A Shakespearean patter for the Jumbo Three Card Monte. A beautiful piece for medieval fairs and evenings of classic magic. ---PLUS Bonus articles:--- *** What if magicians were like...? (Humour) *** D'News (Humour) *** Magical Glossary (Humour) *** Thumbtip Tips - Three great ways to end clean. ---BONUS features on:--- *** Strolling Magic Openings - Great ideas that you can use to break into any group with your close up magic. Practical, commercial, and proven methods you'll use straight away. *** Floorshow Tips - Commercial advice on everything you could possibly want to know about performing a floorshow in virtually any venue. From Lighting, Sound, Video use, Dance Floors, Stages, Dressing Rooms etc. Drawn from over 35 years of experience. *** Magic Magazine Editorial by Tim Ellis - Magic vs the WWE *** Original Patter for the Tim Card Poker Deal by Rolando Santos *** Previews of other Ellis & Webster products. -------------------------------------------- 15.
