SAM Convention In Atlanta -------------------------------------------- Message by Mike Miller S.A.M National President 2009 - 2010 If you haven't made your reservations to the S.A.M national convention in Atlanta Georgia, please do so. It promises to be a very good one. I have been booking talent for several conventions for about 15 years and this year's line up the S.A.M has looks to be very good. There are some names you might not know BUT after the convention I'm sure you'll remember them. Remember Arden James? When Arden performed, no one knew what to expect, now he has performed all over the world. Remember ventriloquist Lynn Trefzger who was the MC the All Gal Gala in Louisville and had Mac King on stage as one of her dummies. Convention show producer R.G Smith has put some great shows together in the past and this year is no exception. Remember in Dallas Texas and the all Cruiseship Gala or in St. Louis with the Topas and Roxanne show? Just last year in Buffalo he had the All Canada Show and a trip to Niagara Falls to see Greg Frewin. People who have attended past conventions have said that the S.A.M is the friendliest convention and has had some of the greatest shows they have seen, and this year is no exception. So register now and see this year's hidden treasure. There will be many memorable acts that you will not forget. -------------------------------------------- 4. New Address For The Magic Collectors' Association -------------------------------------------- Message by James Alan A new digital address for the MCA The Magic Collectors' Association (MCA) has moved to its new digital home to www.magicana.com/mca. Founded in 1949, the MCA has brought collectors together through its annual conference and its quarterly journal, Magicol. Last year, Magicana became the stewards of the MCA. Under the direction of our Artistic Director, David Ben, the MCA will continue to produce Magicol (with the first issue under our watch to be mailed in February) and to stage the conference - this year in Chicago on May 13 to 15th. Magicana also hopes to expand the MCA website by integrating a new, members-only area, which will feature unique resources and archives. The new website also includes an MCA blog where we will post current events, news updates and special offers. We invite all readers to visit www.magicana.com/mca and let us know what you think! -------------------------------------------- 5. 41st Magic Collectors' Association Convention -------------------------------------------- Message by James Alan MCA's 41st Annual Convention in Chicago - May 13 to 15, 2010. More Remarkable Magic #26 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) I am just winding up a 9-week (with 5 days off for good behavior, over the holidays) run of cruise work. My tour has taken me from Manaus (in the very heart of the Amazon river, Along the Brazilian coast to Rio. Next I flew to Miami and cruised to Barbados. I spent a couple of nights in Barbados and then took another ship back to Florida. Next came the welcome 5-day break for Christmas. We had a fun little party that allowed me to catch up with many of my friends from the magic and comedy world. In the photo section of my Facebook page I have posted a great picture of; myself, Norm Nielsen, Johnny Thompson, Daniel Cros, Mark Kornhauser, Steve Dacri, and Billy Collins doing our very best Magnificent Seven impression, looking menacing wearing cowboy hats and fedoras. Check it out for a laugh' I entitled it 'The Gang that Couldn't Deal Straight.' Then back on the road to the very tip of Argentina, Ushuaia; where you can see Antarctica-but strangely enough could not see Sarah Pallin's house. I then cruised to Buenos Aries where I hopped on a plane back to Chile and spent three nights in Valparaiso. This was at least two nights too long. I left Valparaiso and sailed to Ecuador. Which is like Valparaiso without the glamour. The next day I flew to Lima in Peru and cruised up the beautiful fjords of Chile to Puerto Monte where I flew via Santiago and Atlanta to San Francisco and picked up a ship the next day which is taking me to Maui and onto Honolulu. Then I fly home. I mention this travel log just to explain why I may have been a little behind in my personal mail, blog etc. It has been beautiful and grueling all at the same time. Fortunately all the ships involved were 5 or 6 Star vessels and that did quite a bit to soften the battering--- never again though. I want to finish with some very brief observations on working the road (sea) that I have learned over the years. I will be very concise as time is ticking by the second to Alan's deadline for publishing this week's Magic New Zealand ezine. 1 You have to really NEED to travel to be a road-master. 2 You have to learn to pack everything you need to use in your show in your hand baggage. 3 Always travel in an outfit you could, at a pinch, work in. 4 Have way more money with you than you think you need. 5 Be ready to work the MOMENT you arrive somewhere. 6 Don't lose your passport! 7 Always arrive at airports way to early. You would be amazed at how often this pays off in strange ways. 8 Tip everybody. 9 Make sure most of the props you travel with can have multiple uses. 10 Have a really good smart phone! I heartily recommend an iPhone; it will get you out of trouble many a time. Well that's it for this week. Believe me, these might be 10 of the best magic tips you ever get if you want to go into this line of work! Email me at nicklewin1@me.com -------------------------------------------- 7. Too Much Competition? - #152 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com There has been a lot of talk lately on the forums and magic clubs about too much competition. There are worries that with a bad economy this competition can hurt and effect what they do. There is a general fear that competition can only bring down the magical arts and cause more problems for everyone. In our area there is a TON of magicians working in various aspects of the market. In fact in the Philadelphia region alone, we have the second largest S.A.M Assembly in the world. We have well over 100 members and even close to 125 members at times. In short the markets around here are certainly not short on competition. However, it is important to know that numbers of entertainers in your market does not mean the same thing as numbers of QUALIFIED PROFESSIONALS working in the area. Although we have a lot of folks in our local market, there is a select group who I can consider to be at the top of their game. To me, these professionals are the ones who know there is a reason why we call it "Show Business". They are the folks that have a great show, know the business side of what they do and deliver benefits to the client that meet and exceed their expectations. These are the same folks who know that they are more than magicians. They are solutions providers. They go out of their way to listen to the client before hard selling to them. They lock in on the needs the client has in order to customize the perfect solution that meets those needs. They realize that their perceived value goes up with the ability to solve problems for the client. These same folks also know that being a professional does not start when the curtains open and end when the curtains close. You are a professional at ALL times on and off stage. They know that customer service is everything and go above and beyond in delivering more then what is expected of them. They do it because it adds value to the relationship and they know that building these relationships is critical to success. They know that performing the actual show is the easiest part of what they do. They know and understand that the time devoted off stage is critically important to being a professional and being called one. These folks strive to always better themselves because they know you never stop learning. They always work out the act and the routines and are the ones you see taking notes after every performance. These folks also know that being a professional means giving back to magic what they have received from it. They are the ones who teach and share knowledge with those who are willing to take the action upon themselves to receive it. They are the ones that realize that everyone can have an opinion even if is different from their own. They are the ones that know the future of magic are in the hands of the young magicians. They realize these future stars of magic can be taught lessons they know. But more importantly, they realize they can listen to these young magicians and still learn from them. So is there a lot of competition in our area? Are there a lot of magicians fighting for the same dollar? Sure there is and at a staggering rate sometimes. But if you ask me if I am worried about it, I would have to say no. I am only worried that there are NOT enough folks like what I just described above. THAT is what worries me the most. But I know that these select handful of magicians, whom I am comfortable to call Professionals, are living up to what being a magician is all about. I am also glad to call these folks my friends. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. - I would like to let everyone know that I just released a NEW book and E-Book to the magic Community. "Blue and Gold! Tony Brook In Conversation With Tobias Beckwith - Part 1 ------------------------------------------ Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA Tobias Beckwith is an extremely erudite and remarkable man. Magician, Author, Philosopher, Lateral Thinker, Lecturer, Expert on Theatrical Arts and the Manager of the most Mystical & Influential Magical Entertainer in the business - Jeff McBride. I've known Eugene Burger a goodly while. He and I arranged to have dinner in Vegas a few months ago. Eugene has many skills. One is creating the future. He brought along a few other people he thought it would be fun for me to meet. Dr.Larry Hass, Robert Neale and a Wizard called Tobias Beckwith. A Wizard? Yes, and a very exceptional one, as will revealed during our conversation. Although, in relative terms, I have only known Tobias a short time, we have struck a chord of friendship that surpasses chronology. To quote one of my favorite Poets and Mystics, Kahlil Gibran, "And let there be no purpose in friendship save the deepening of the Spirit". Tobias and I delight in the Esoteric, the Mystical and our frequent visits to the realms beyond the obvious. www.tobiasbeckwith.com TB1: Hello Tobias. Thank you for taking time from your busy schedule to chat a while. Let me begin by asking you about your friendship and indeed work association with Jeff McBride? Everyone on this Planet knows who Jeff is ...well, after Deep Space 9 maybe other Planets too!!! But let's converse about matters on this Planet you teamed up with Jeff some 20 years ago and apart from being his Manager, you also Produced many of his shows tell us a bit of how that all began .. TB2: Hi Tony. You are welcome. Always a pleasure conversing with you. Teaming up with Jeff started as you say back in 1986, when we started working on his first full evening show together. I became his Manager in 1988. TB1: Over dinner in Vegas you told me that best move you made was leaving the world of Academia and moving into this world of showbiz, to be specific, Magic. obviously certain Universal laws were at work here, but from your personal perspective was the transformation an easy one or did it carry a feel of a leap into uncharted waters? TB2: At the time it was terrifying. I loved being a student, and then an instructor. The University atmosphere felt safe and easy. Facing the competitive world of New York theater was anything but I had real doubts about my abilities to compete on that level. Fortunately, they were soon dispelled, and I fell into work easily enough as Manager and associate producer for a number of projects. I had moved to New York ostensibly to finish up a Doctorate at NYU...but after 3 months working at The Fantasticks off-Broadway, I lost interest in academic theatre, and felt far more confident about my ability to work "in the real world." A few years later, when I started working with Jeff McBride, it was a bit of a dream come true, because in the world of magic I was able to use everything I'd been trained to do - directing, choreographing, designing set & lighting - in addition to the business management and production end of things. I'm truly grateful to my time in the theatre, where I got to watch Hal Prince & Steven Sondheim put Sweeney Todd together, and Tom Jones, Word Baker and Harvey Schmidt revamp The Fantasticks for its 15th year anniversary. I'm delighted to have been able to rub elbows and work with many of the people who were personal heroes and role models when I was growing up -- but it was a relief when it was all over to be able to jump into a world where all my talents were valued, and which provided the opportunity to keep them all growing. TB1: Seems like a logical progression given your background in Broadway Theater. You and I have chatted about Universal laws and it is truly Magical the way sometimes we are ushered into things and paths that we had never planned .this applies to you in many ways does it not? TB2: Yes it does. I've mentioned The Fantasticks & Sweeney Todd above. I was thrust into the world of management - the only part of theater I'd never studied -- one night when the former general manager for the show ran off with his new girl friend and the box office receipts to Arizona. The Producer offered me the job - I told him I had no experience, he told me it came with almost double the salary I was making in the box office, so I said yes...and proceeded to learn the job while doing it, by trying to organize the files, call up vendors to find out who they were and what we needed them for, calling Actor's Equity to ask what I was to do with all the blank forms I found...and on and on like that. Quite an adventure. For Sweeney Todd I got to work as a Production Assistant for producers Richard Barr & Charles Woodward. Some of the "odd jobs" that fell to me were driving Angela Lansbury back and forth to the theatre, answering phones, and handling all the house seats for all the show's principals. This last was a real perk, because it meant I got to talk to Steve Sondheim, Hal Prince and the others almost daily. Oh! Calcutta! was an even bigger learning experience, because, though the show was quite awful, Producer Norman Kean took a real liking to me and mentored me in the business of producing shows. He trusted me to help him negotiate all our contracts for licensing the show around the world, monitoring touring productions, computerizing our office (this was the early 80's and computers were a new thing on Broadway - we were the first theatre to sell tickets through Ticketmaster, which was a brand new company at that time. Norman would tell me: "You're going to make mistakes. I only ask that you make really big ones - and let me know the minute you realize it's a mistake." TB1: Those empirical experiences helped hone many of the skills you use today. Your main activity is your Company, Tobias Beckwith, Inc.- The Best in Magical Artists & Creations of which you are President. Tell us a bit about that and share with us some of your current & future objectives...... TB2: The core of my business is currently (and has been for a number of years) the personal & business management of Jeff McBride & Marco Tempest. An interesting pairing, as Jeff takes magic back to its roots and his magic is heavily steeped in ritual and tradition, while Marco is doing more, I think, to drive magic into the future than anyone else on the planet. He has currently developed two Augmented Reality magic effects that are real mind blowers - and had them ready to show and perform before anyone else in the magic world had ever even heard of Augmented reality. He loves the challenges of large corporate theatre productions because they force him to create new ways of communicating for each and every show. Jeff, on the other hand, likes to describe himself as "more high touch than high tech." I love working with both of them, because they both really keep me on my toes. Two of the brightest people I know - and radically different personalities. Beyond the Management end of things, I've been working with up and coming mental magician and anthropologist Paul Draper. He was one of Jeff's students, and that's how we met. I got to direct the first version of his mental magic show, and have helped him focus all of his many different talents under the guise of a purveyor of mental mysteries. It's been fun...and he's yet another really bright and fascinating guy. I've also enjoyed writing my book "Beyond Deception," and doing several workshops based on extending what I teach in the book. Students perform pieces for directorial feedback as part of the workshops, and then we do game-like exercises based on theatre games and some other things I've developed. These are to help them expand their abilities as performers (I taught acting at the U. of Pittsburgh for several years), and to develop their own creative instincts. We should really call them 'playshops' instead of 'workshops,' I think, since we all have so much fun. Finally...and this is one of the things you and I have been discussing at length, I'm working on a book tentatively entitled "Wizards' Ways," all about things I've learned in just over 20 years of living and working with wizards. I use the term to mean more than just performing magicians - though certainly Jeff, Marco, and our friend Eugene Burger qualify as wizards. I'm more interested in studying people who use little known and understood powers to change themselves, other people and the world around them. These include shamans, medicine men and women, witches, warlocks -- and people like Albert Einstein, Steve Jobs and the guys who created Google. These people have all worked on their own minds and ways of thinking and being so that they could bring new and wonderful things into our world. TB1: Yes. Exactly. New & wonderful things being brought to the world .maybe not always new but always wonderful. You also do that with your writing . You have a well-deserved reputation as an Author. Your first book on Magic was entitled, "BEYOND DECEPTION - The Theory & Practice of Creating Original Magic." It elevated the Art and indeed took it beyond the usual barriers. Please share with us the motivation that spurred the inspiration & indeed, also a brief overview of its content ..... End of Part1 - check in next week for more Tobias Beckwith (Hidden in this article are deliberate grammatical & spelling mistakes. Latest Hot News From The Innovention -------------------------------------------- Message by Paul Stone The latest Hot News from The Innovention, the new and unique Magic Convention taking place at the Suncoast Hotel & Casino in Summerlin, Las Vegas from 4-7 October 2010, is that we've now added to the already amazing line-up of Talent by booking Joanie Spina, the renowned Choreographer, Director and Lead Dancer from David Copperfield's first ten TV Specials, for a 'hands-on' Workshop and an extra 'ground breaking' session. Joanie is without doubt one of the top experts in her field, and it is a real coup to have her involved. Anyone who attended either the 'Ultimate Performers Workshop' in Las Vegas or the British Ring Convention in Southport in 2007, will know just how valuable Joanie's sessions are to a performer. David Hemingway wrote after seeing her Lecture at Southport ..' in fifty years of attending Conventions, I've never seen anyone who came even close to being as inspirational. What Joanie gave us was worth the price of the Convention, and moreover she did it with enormous grace, kindness and humanity as well as authority'. -------------------------------------------- 12. Currently Booking Devin Knight On A Lecture Tour -------------------------------------------- Message by Tom Craven (US) I am currently booking Devin Knight on a lecture tour throughout the Eastern third of the US. I have enclosed just one of the 21 reviews from his 2009 Fall lecture tour. Any club in the region mentioned please get in touch with me if interested. This tour will start on or about April 1st. I do have more reviews, and also a preview of the lecture content for your convenience! "On Sunday, November 15, IBM Ring 199 members were treated to a visit by Devin Knight on his first US lecture tour. IBM members traveled from as far as Charlotte, Fayetteville, Wilmington, and Havelock to be treated to the incredibly clever effects taught by Devin. All the magic was within the skill range of almost all performers, but was very entertaining and devilishly clever! After three hours of incredible magic, we were all exhausted but immediately looking forward to Devin?s next lecture tour. Definitely catch his lecture if you have the opportunity!"
