Tom Mullica Has Acute Myelogenous Leukemia -------------------------------------------- Message by Meir Yedid (US) As many of you know Tom Mullica has been touring his Red Skelton Tribute show during the Branson off-season. On January 16th, during a show in Alliance, Nebraska Tom felt ill and almost passed out, he tried to finish the show while seated but could not. He was met backstage by emergency responders and was rushed to the hospital. After undergoing tests he was told to cancel the rest of the tour and meet with his personal physician. While home there were more blood tests followed by a bone marrow biopsy which showed that more that 40% of Tom's white blood cells were immature and that he has Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (blood and bone marrow cancer). On February 17th he was admitted to the Cancer Ward of the Cox Medical Center where he will undergo high level chemotherapy for the next 30 days. He will then go home and continue with the chemotherapy with five days of treatment per month for four months. At the conclusion he will hopefully be much better but there is a chance that he will need a stem-cell transplant. He obviously had to cancel the rest of his tour and postpone his March opening in Branson. I am sure all of you will join me in wishing Tom and Stephen the best as they go through this very serious ordeal. Commemorative Stamp on P.C. Sorcar -------------------------------------------- Message by Sreenivas Garigipati (India) Abracadabra! Indian Government produced a commemorative stamp on P.C. Sorcar out of thin air. The Department of Posts of Government of India released here on Tuesday a commemorative stamp in honour of P. C. Sorcar (Senior), the man who "took the magic of India to the rest of the world" and captivated audiences worldwide with tricks crafted from India's folk arts and mystic traditions. West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, who was present on the occasion, said, "I have come to pay my respects to the memory of such a person who was not just popular amongst the people of our country, but also had earned great admiration and regard in the international arena." Mr. Bhattacharjee's personal favourite was the 'Water of India,' an item in which an endless stream of water flowed from a vessel throughout the show. He remembered having seen it in his younger days. "I don't understand magic, but what I know is that it is based on the fundamentals of logic and science," he added. Issued on his 98th birth anniversary, the stamp has a picture of the maestro with his hands outstretched weaving the 'indrajal' (web of illusion) - a term he coined to describe the repertoire of his tricks and illusions. The Department of Posts was very pleased to release a stamp on the "Jadugar of the world" here in Bengal, the place where he drew inspiration for several of his tricks, said Rameshwari Handa, Chief Post Master-General, West Bengal Circle. The famed magician, known for his spectacular sets and costumes, particularly his self-styled "Maharaja robe" and plumed turban, was also the author of 20 books - in Bengali, Hindi and English - on various aspects of the craft. Elaborate optical illusions emphasised by dazzling light effects were hallmarks of his shows. His son, P. C. Sorcar (Junior), the seventh in a line of eight generations of magicians, was among those present at the event. Pratul Chandra Sorcar Sr. is known as the Father of Modern Indian Magic. He was attracted to magic at an early age. He initially learned magic from Shri Ganapati Chakravati. After passing the entrance examination in the first division, he graduated with honours in mathematics in the year 1933.He then took up magic as a profession. He received many awards at home and abroad. He twice earned the Phoenix award in the United States. He also won the German Goldbar and the Golden Laurel Garland awards and the Dutch Tricks prize. In 1964 the Indian Government honoured him with Padmashri. Sorcar died of a heart attack at the young age of 58 in Ashaikawa, Hokkaido, Japan, on January 6, 1971, where he was performing his Ind-dra-jal. -------------------------------------------- 4. Remarkable Magic #27 'Steve Dacri: In Your Face.' -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) I have known Steve Dacri for probably three decades and he is a good friend. However, last night was the first time I have ever seen him perform. Now that may seem strange to some people, but it is standard procedure for me. I can't quite explain it, but it really does seem a nice way to separate friends, colleagues and magicians. Last night I went to the opening of Steve Dacri's new Show; 'In Your Face.' The show is being featured at the 'Big' Hilton (Elvis' old hangout!) right here in Las Vegas at 7:30 pm. every Wednesday evening. I am confident that it will quickly build into a powerhouse crowd magnet. Steve is a veteran performer, who knows all the buttons to press and pull to impress a lay audience and he uses them systematically to achieve his success. He has charm and talent: plus a slightly a slightly vulnerable presence hidden deep below the 'In Your Face' brashness. With Steve you quickly know you're in the hands of a true entertainer. Several times during the evening while watching Steve, I was reminded of Doug Henning. By Steve's straightforward enthusiasm for his magic and the act of sharing it with an audience. There was a simplicity that pushed the magic to the fore, rather than watching someone who wants you to be more impressed with them than the tricks. There was AV to enhance the show (It was Henning I first saw use this technique, many moons ago) which certainly is effective, I have long used video to help focus an audience at certain points during my show. One early clip of Dacri on the classic 'Candid Camera' television program is a glorious bonus to the show and brought the house down. Dacri should feel really proud of his new show and venue, I don't think it will take him long to hit his stride and come up with a show that will dazzle his audiences and develop into a long-term success. With Steve's show, unlike other magic shows on the strip; when I left the showroom I left it feeling proud to be a magician. And as a little teaser... Last week I also attended (hell, I got onstage at it!) Jeff McBride's new Las Vegas enterprise; 'Wonderground'. It is rather curious magic event being held once a month at the 'Olive,' Hookah Bar in Green Valley. It was certainly one of the best evenings I've had in a while, and a bunch of fun. However that is a whole other column! Next week. Give me a digital "Hi," at nicklewin1@mac.com -------------------------------------------- 6. March Issue of MAGIC Magazine -------------------------------------------- Message by Stan Alan (US) First, a bit that is not in the new issue of MAGIC Magazine: Just after we sent the March issue to the printer, we learned that our cover subject, the amazing Arturo Brachetti, was nominated by The Society of London Theatre for a Laurence Olivier Award in the category of Best Entertainment. There are three shows vying for the prestigious award: "Arturo Brachetti: Change" - written and directed by Sean Foley, original concept by Serge Denoncourt, based on the repertoire of Arturo Brachetti, at the Garrick theatre. "Derren Brown: Enigma" - written by Derren Brown and Andy Nyman, at the Adelphi theatre. "Morecambe" (a portrait of English comedian Eric Morecambe, 1926 - 1984) - by Tim Whitnall, at the Duchess theatre. Congratulations to Arturo and Derren (alright, and Tim Whitnall). This year's Laurence Olivier Awards will be presented in London on March 21. Second, some of the stories that are in the March issue of MAGIC Magazine: "Arturo Brachetti: A Wardrobe of Dreams" by John Fisher. This Italian quick-change artist is a one-man theater company, playing multiple roles onstage and offstage: actor, director, storyteller, puppeteer - and, of course, magician. "He Sold Secrets" by David Meyer. Known simply by his middle name, Anthony Nelmar Albino was a publisher of magic instructions, somehow staying in business despite not getting along with his customers or his authors. "Good Will Magic" by Joanie Spina. When National Guardsman Scott Anderson goes on a tour of duty overseas, he takes along his magic, promoting goodwill among Iraqi and Afghan civilians, as well as with the military units in which he serves. "SuperMagic Presents Mistero" by Adam Fleischer. The seventh annual SuperMagic festival recently took place in Rome, featuring a sold-out ten-day run of an international magic show for the public. "Doing Well, Doing Good, Doing Magic" by John Armato. While you might not know his name, Jon Petz is a busy corporate magician who has found a way to work true miracles, bringing magic to children facing serious illnesses. "Convention Grid." Our annual guide to magic gatherings far and wide gets a new look this year, with all the basic information laid out on a grid for ease of planning, comparing, and contrasting. Be Yourself - #156 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com Be Yourself. I am sure we have all heard it growing up and from others in our life from time to time. Be yourself and not someone else. Act the way you would act and do what you know is right for you. Seems a pretty simple and straightforward concept. These are the lessons of life and we learn from them. However, why does his simple phrase become forgotten in the magical arts? Why is it that we feel this phrase is no longer important or simply does not apply to us when performing magic? Perhaps we hear the phrase but pay it no attention. Perhaps we do not want to hear it at all. Why is this so important? It's important because too often the magical arts is filled with "clones." These are the same people doing the same thing the same way and for the same audiences. If you do not believe me, just talk to a layperson. The attitude an opinion of lay folks is such that every magician is the same and we all look and act alike. You know what? They are right. We are and we do. So why does this happen? There are many reasons but the biggest one is a simple word.LAZY. We are simply flat out lazy. If success were based upon taking action, then more people would be successful. The problem is most folks do not want to take the action because they see a simpler path to follow. Why take the hard road when the paved road is easier to travel? The same applies to magic. Why try and create something that is unique to us if we can "borrow" something from someone else? It is just easier to buy a "routine in a box" and add it to your show. I say routine in a box because that is the way things are sold these days. Now do not get me wrong here. I like magic dealers and inventors as much as the other guy. However, the fact of the matter is that things are created and sold to you so you do not have to think for yourself. The trick you buy comes with instructions, tells you what to say, how to move, gives you comedy lines, alternative patter and a DVD showing you exactly how to do it the way the other magician does. Does this make us unique? NO! It simply makes us a lesser copy of someone else. How many of us have also seen a magic show and flat out stole the routine and patter of the person we saw? Be honest with yourself. The answer is a LOT of us. We get caught up in the power of the effect and the reactions we saw. The problem is that we forget that THAT magician caused the reactions. It was not simply the effect itself. If the effect or prop was getting the reactions, then why not just place the prop on a table and walk off stage. The point is that the magician makes the entertainment experience. Therein may lay the problem. Can anyone be like this magician? No, they can't. Would you want to be this magician? No, I would think you would want to be yourself. Would someone else garner the same exact reactions as this magician? Probably not. They would still get laughs and reactions but not the same way. The reason is simple. They are not that magician. They cannot possibly know or perform the nuances that the magician brought to the performance. They may replicate what they saw. However, replication with some minor updating is NOT being creative or true to you. We need to get over this idea that stealing others acts or routines will make us a better performer. That simply does not happen. It makes for more magicians performing more bad magic. What we need to remember is that simple phrase."Be Yourself." Learn to find out who you are as a performer. Find your own unique style and define your character on stage. Know what that character would and would not do. Remember to script your routines so it fits who you are. Is this tough, well yeah it requires you taking some action. But remember that any success requires you taking that first step. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. - "Blue and Gold! Tony Brook in Conversation with Norm Nielsen - Part 2 ------------------------------------------ Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA TB: I can understand that, it is why we perform .The applause, the acknowledgements. Nevertheless, you told me that you have retired from performing. You said that your last performance was on 28 September, 2008 at the famous London Palladium at the Siegfried and Roy Tribute Gala show. Please share with us the background on that show and your final performance. NN: The producer of the show was Paul Stone, and I was extremely honored to have been asked to perform at the Tribute Show for Siegfried and Roy. Not only was this an opportunity to perform at such a prestigious venue, but I have always been a big fan of Siegfried and Roy. I also know that John and Pam Thompson, who were in the show with me, were also very excited, as this was the first time we were working at the Palladium. When I walked out on stage, to my surprise, the audience was lit - because French television was shooting the show for a television special - and as I looked up at the balcony I could see all the glistening eyes and faces of the audience, which is so unusual when you work a theatre like that. Normally, it might make me nervous to see the audience; instead, it gave me a warm welcoming feeling. TB: Well, I guess there is only so much travel one can do and I guess there comes a time when there is a lot to be said for sleeping in your own bed every night!!! Performing may be over for you but you are busily involved in your workshop and your collection of Magical artifacts, especially Posters. I've been a guest in your home and was just overwhelmed by your collections. Orson Wells hangs imposingly over the door gazing down like some Celestial watcher. Chung Ling Soo looks amazingly inscrutable as he peers knowingly from the walls, Tang horses proudly prance across Oriental tables, Cardini passes the time checking his watch and looking at his original Billiard balls. Many of Señor Wences' amigos, including the original Pedro lie silent and speechless under glass.you first met Moreno Wences at The Crazy Horse in Paris, James Dimmare added a Cue ball or two to Cardini, kindly share with us some of the stories behind these .. NN: Probably 20 years ago, when I was working in Madrid, Victor King (an Argentinean magician), gave me a couple of posters of Fu Manchu. Actually, they were poster pieces. It took two posters to make one. When I got back home to Los Angeles, I pieced the poster together and hung it up in my office. It kind of grew on me. When I went to another magic convention, Mario Carrandi had a poster of Señor Frakson for sale which I purchased. Frakson was a friend of mine and I never knew he had a poster. I purchased along with it the Carter 3-sheet "Priestess of Delphi", and that was the beginning of the poster collection. About the other items like Señor Wences' collection, I met Sr. Wences in 1974 while working at the Crazy Horse Saloon in Paris. We became good friends. His wife Taly, and I corresponded after that and we all met many times in New York over the years. When Sr. Wences died at age 103, Taly Wences sent me his act which was in a valise, along with a steamer trunk filled with a lot of Sr. Wences' personal items - photographs, early puppets, etc. The Cardini Balls were obtained from James Dimmare. The story goes that Cardini gave a set of Multiplying Billiard Balls to Channing Pollock along with deck of his cards. Channing gave them to James Dimmare, and now I got these from James. TB: Simply fascinating these background stories and I know there are many more. Much has been published and will continue to be published about your vast collection of original posters. There is no way this article can do justice to your museum. I say museum, because that is what it is, it is much more than just a vast collection. Tell us briefly about this and indeed the Mirror cards on the wall to the entrance to your kitchen. NN: The museum is a guest house on our property, which is currently being used to display a great part of the posters. We have changed the layout about three times in order to maximize the space. The Mirror Cards you are talking about Tony are exactly that - mirrors. However, there is as you have observed, much more, each one is personally autographed by each performer, and there are 48 of them. These were made up in sets and there are still a few sets available. TB: We can, I am sure converse much on your Posters. But, let me move to another equally fascinating side of your Magic. Over the years, you have acquired a well-earned reputation as the inventor and manufacturer of the high-quality Nielsen line of products, which include, among others, Vanishing Bottles, Rubber Doves and Manipulation Cards. And of course, The Okito line of products. NN: I started Nielsen Magic, in 1956, as a physical magic shop in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Jay Marshall booked me on a show for the IBM in Chicago where I met a number of the Chicago boys. What surprised me was that after the show, an older gentleman came up to me and handed me his card, and said: "Come and see me sometime." His name was Theo Bamberg (aka "Okito"). That is when I began to visit Theo in Chicago, periodically. Eventually he sold me his tools, and helped me in many, many ways. At that time I was also taking woodworking classes. Theo was 86 years old when I met him, and it was about 2 years later that I completed the first Okito item, which was the Triangular Mystery. I took it to Chicago to show Theo who was now in a nursing home. When I walked in the room with the Triangular Mystery, Okito sat up in his bed and examined the prop. After about 20 minutes, he looked up at me, smiled and said: "It's goot." Two weeks later, I found myself back in Chicago at Okito's funeral. I was so fortunate to have known him. He also gave me permission to make any of the items that he made. TB: As always Norm, your "behind the scenes" back stories are just fascinating. All your products are detailed on your site and you have many satisfied clients both in the US and elsewhere; I guess it would be an understatement to say that purchasing an "Okito" item from you is, to my way of thinking, buying a piece of history from Okito to you and to the proud owner. Do you make custom props if requested? NN: Unfortunately, I don't make special items, because we are already so busy with the posters and the items in our line. However, sometimes people have suggested that we make certain items and decorate them in "Okito-style" and we have been happy to do this. Buying a piece of history, well, I never thought of it that way but, I suppose that will be a job for future magicians to determine. TB: And I'm sure they will agree with me: Your clients also get a "bonus". props made by an experienced performer. So it is really as you stated before, in conjunction with the Magic. The history, the tradition, the smoothness, the flow, the harmony. I am a great believer in The Harmony of Magic. Speaking of harmony, it has been a very delightful and harmonious experience spending time with you. I am so glad that you shared your time with us. Thank you Norm. NN: Thank you Tony. You are very welcome. It has been a pleasure. (Hidden in this article are deliberate grammatical and spelling mistakes.
