A Magician's Constitution - #158 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com In a recent trip to Philadelphia, I had the privilege to experience and see an original copy of the American Constitution. I also had the chance to go through the new constitution center that has been established. I must tell you it was quite an amazing, moving and touching experience. Staring in front of that glass I started reading the first opening line "We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America." WOW! What powerful words and what a concept to establish a set of rules and laws that establish the rights of the government, states and the rights of the people. Now you may be wondering how this has anything at all do with the magical arts. Well as I stared at those words I started to realize just how lost we are as magicians. I realized that the only ways we even know what we should be doing or how we should be acting is through simple common sense and the hopes that we had a good mentor to guide us. What we do not have is anything that really tells us what it means to be a magician. We do not really have anything that tells us how we should act as a magician and what is expected of us. Could there be a sort of constitution set up for magicians? Maybe yes and maybe no. But for myself, I figured I wanted and needed to write up a set of ground rules on how I personally felt a magician should act and certain rules I felt a magician should follow. If nothing more, these could be place in my office for me to ALWAYS see and to always remember no matter where I am in my magic career. I want to share with you what I came up with. We the magicians of the world, in order to better our art form, establish professionalism, insure education with our peers and promote the betterment of our art, do establish this Magicians Constitution. As a magician I promise: - that I will never reveal a secret of magic to a non magician. I promise that I hold sacred those secrets which have been trusted to me and handed down from generation to generation. - to remember that magic is never so much about fooling people but about entertaining them. I will always strive to entertain an audience and to learn the ways in which to properly accomplish this. - that I will practice what I learn and not perform it in public until I have reached a fluency in it. - that I will never accept second best or "it's good enough" from myself or from any other magician. For "good enough" is simply a way of giving up and giving in. Our audiences deserve more and we deserve more of ourselves. - that I will respect my fellow magicians so I may get the same respect back. It is not about causing arguments. It is about realizing that discussions are healthy and that opinions can be different but also that we can all learn from them. - that I will never ever forget my audience. I will always remember who they are and my place on stage. What I do and how I do it shall be for the audience's I perform for. - that if the magic becomes all about "me" and for "me" alone, that I will save that magic for my own home. If I fail to forget that my magic is not all about "me", then I promise to put my magic aside until time that I fully understand. - that I will never embarrass another magician through my own actions. - that I will not steal from another magician in full or in part. I promise that I will strive to find my own unique style of performance. - to support my magic brethren and help out in any way that I can so we all may grow in this art. If I can help another magician through actions I can take, I choose to do so and not accept anything in return. I do it for the art I love. - to remember that failure is never failure if I continue to learn something from it. If I do learn then it is a step on the road to success. If I see others fail, I will encourage them to get back up and to help them learn from it. - never to give up my love and passion for the magical arts and if I do, then I promise to place my wand aside until that passion comes back. - that I will never fear to ask any question from any magician for there is never a dumb question, only the question not asked. - to support the future of magic and to assist the beginners coming into the magical arts in any way I can. These beginners can be of any age, race or culture and I will strive to promote our art, fundamentals and values within them. - to simply listen and talk to any magician who simply wants to talk to me. I will make the time. - that I will strive to be as creative as I possibly can be and to continue the pursuit of creative thought in magic both within myself and others. - to treat my audience helpers like guests in my own home. If I get a laugh from them, I promise to make sure they know my appreciation. I promise that embarrassment of others to inflate my own ego is something that will never be a part of who I am as a magician. - to never allow my own ego to grow so large that I forget who I really am or where I came from. No matter where my magic takes me, I will always remember my past and give to the future of the art. - to always remember to be a professional at ALL times. I will strive to be a professional not just on stage but in everything I do and how I conduct myself. - to never stop learning and to continue to always expand my knowledge of the magical arts and its history. I will share this knowledge freely with other magicians who have shown a desire to learn from me. - to always give 100% effort in every show or performance I do. I realize that "calling it in" is not a part of who I am or the art form I choose to do. - to uphold the symbolism and meaning of what it is to be a magician. I will strive to conduct myself in a way that brings honor to the magical arts. - to never forget that being a magician is an honor and a privilege. I write this Magician's Constitution because I believe in who I am as a magician and because I believe that the art form of magic is something I take seriously. I will continue to abide by these simple rules so that I can always help myself and to ensure the meaning of the word "magician" continues to be something of value. Tony Brook In Conversation With Chuck Lehr - Part 2 ------------------------------------------ Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA TB: During the years that followed, you tried pretty much everything magically and did it all. However, slowly, but surely, a defining character emerged and that is the one you still use today. Share some of those times with us please ... CL: Over the next several years, I had all but abandoned the "painted face" and adopted costumes such as a fancy tux, western gambler, ancient wizard, Uncle Sam, or even a Chinese magician. But, my very favorite performance attire (almost my trademark) was a zany slick street magician, complete with pop-up tie and flying flower. Some FUN. I have done a variety of magic; comedy, sophisticated, trade show, magic with a message, hospitality rooms, close-up, stage, libraries, and schools; and I always worked for the SMILE. Of course, it was all purely G-rated. Over the years, I left them LAUGHING and APPLAUDING at places like Southfork Ranch, Six Flags over Texas, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Rolls-Royce of Canada, and Local & NBC National TV. "Never failed to win a smile" said the Waikiki Holiday Inn. Mr. Ebinezer Scrooge was known to say, "He even made ME laugh". I was a "full-timed pro" from March 1994. The year 2001 (a slow year), I performed nearly 300 shows. That should give you an idea of how busy I was. I stayed busy with magic full-time, and tried to involve myself in the Society of American Magicians (S.A.M.) and Dallas Magic Club activities. I was voted a "Life Member" of the Dallas Magic Club. How does magic fit into my life - better stated - how does my life fit into magic? The best answer is "By Appointment". We found ourselves making appointments and clearing calendar dates just to enjoy an evening with our grown children. TB: How did you get to grips with the development and creation of your unique act? CL: Performing as Posey Klown for many years with Joannie gave me experience and "guts" to be in front of a group. It helped me polish my magic. Pretty soon I found that I could do the magic - without the face paint. My life suddenly became easier. I could now do more shows. Next, I learned that with just a bit of added sophistication, I could do the same magic for adults. For the most part, they were all just big kids anyways. TB: I hear that you are not living at a hectic pace so much .. CL: Yes.. I am slowing down. I began to "coast" in 2007 (A typical weekend then was limited to three shows on Saturday, two on Sunday, and an occasional day off during the week). As much as I loved magic, I knew it was important to "smell the roses", so a major part of my schedule continued to be birthday parties (my favorite). Further, I love sleeping in my own bed, so I tried to stay closer to home. What kept me busy working was a basic club-type show that could expand or contract to fit the situation. Normally, 40 minutes of funny magic got me through a banquet, or a shortened version would suffice for a business seminar-meeting break. I also spent a lot of time performing strolling magic - which I dearly loved. Did I do restaurants? Yes - but I tried to stay away from the extended contracts. I preferred the excitement of different venues. TB: I know what you mean. It's an added adrenalin rush, the excitement of different venues. However, we all have to start somewhere, so do you have some thoughts you'd like to share with those starting out .. CL: Well.one major observation of caution ... - keep your day-job. You need a fall-back position because it does not happen overnight. It takes time to build your reputation and client base. For me, once it got rolling, my magic (business) became a 16-hour a day job. Always "on", always checking phone messages, always getting ready for the show. There was a time when I was doing as many shows as I could fit in a day. Another thought is to keep an open mind to learning the business it is not enough to have the ability to do tricks or make people laugh, you have to pay the bills and so learn how to make a living. Maybe I am not the best example of a "career" magician. A real "full-time" magician would have to work a lot harder than I have. I had military and civilian retirement benefits to fall back on. Without those, I certainly would be a nervous wreck, and still beating the bushes for work. I was fortunate that I was in a position to pick and choose my gigs. Another blessing for any "full-time pro" is an understanding mate who is involved in the lifestyle. TB: Over the years you have been served in several Magic Organizations and picked up a few Awards too... CL: My peers in the entertainment field have seen fit to award me First Place in several magic competitions: Close-up Magician at the Midwest Magic Jubilee and the Texas Association of Magicians Convention for two separate years, and Comedy Stage Magic at the Texas Association of Magicians Convention. I am a Past President of the Texas Association of Magicians (over 1,000 members nationwide and a few International ones also ); twice Past President Dallas Magic Clubs; Past Regional Vice President for the Gulf States and Volunteer Coordinator in The Society of American Magicians for several years; and finally, National Secretary for the S.A.M. from July 2006 to July 2008. TB: In Conversation with Dal Sanders, who is currently the RVP for The S.A.M in Texas, we talked about the Ike & Gustav tragedies in Houston and other parts of Texas. Share with us some of your involvement & experiences as The S.A.M National Secretary ......... CL: You cannot imagine how proud I was to carry the moniker of National Secretary. WOW, my own calling cards! While I am not a "political" person, I am organized, so I loved the details and the pressure of the job. Every report, every task was a personal challenge to me. And the friends - what a great group of people. It was so neat to work with people of such high caliber. I was always amazed to watch the thought processes during Board meetings. I always felt I was in tall cotton at these meetings. I actually had foreign dignitaries seeking me out for help with visas, etc. What a privilege. The Convention was outstanding in many ways, firstly, R.G Smith put together an outstanding bill of International Performers and secondly, some of the parties were just so much fun . What a lot of people don't know was that you and a few others also worked tirelessly in the background to make this one of the most interesting conventions. At these Conventions, a lot of The S.A.M "business" is conducted as well, such as the Caucus meeting, Council meeting and voting on various issues. Getting all that happened written down, preparing The Blue Book, etc. In short, quite a bit of work for The National Secretary. Tell us a little of the behind the scenes work that went into all of that . CL: Joannie and I tried for years to entice the S.A.M. to hold a convention here in Dallas. It finally happened. The Dallas S.A.M. convention was certainly a highlight for both of us. The problem was that we got to see very little of it. One entire afternoon trying to resolve some lighting problems for a contestant, a "bank run" to provide our cash to pay certain performers, racing between activities to insure everything was in place and working. What really made it all special was when, at the convention banquet, Convention Executive Mike Douglass publicly acknowledged Joannie and I as honorary convention committee members. What a thrill! TB: And a well-deserved acknowledgement it was too! I was one of several people in that room who happily joined in the enthusiastic applause and hearty cheering for you both. Just wonderful to see and share in so much appreciation. As you know, I was back in your neck of the woods once again in August 2008. This time at the Texas Association of Magicians Convention in Fort Worth. I was invited to Produce and Host a TV style Talk show honoring Walter "Zaney" Blaney. Great guests on the show, including a call from David Copperfield. You were also a guest on the show and whilst on stage surprised me with a Presidential citation. That was fun .let's share that wonderful moment . CL: Yes Tony it was fun. If you recall, I had told you that I was asked by outgoing 2007/2008 S.A.M. President Maria Ibanez to present a Citation to Walter but we also secretly arranged to present one to you too and we thought it might be fun to actually do it on stage during the Talk Show; if you recall, I announced it as a Typographical error that it had your name on it instead of Walter's. I know you love fun and mischief as much as I do!!!! You should have seen the look on your face. But, always the professional, you recovered and went on to provide us with a wonderful show that ended with Walter levitating Frances Willard. TB: Yes Chuck that was truly exciting and we have it all on tape too! Mid 2008 was also a turning point for you. You decided to change gear ... CL: Well as you know, even though I was "coasting" I was still working at a fast pace and Joannie had not been too well and so although it was quite exciting,.. for me, the writing was on the wall, and we had to change priorities, so my "coasting" became almost "retirement". No more travelling, no evening shows - just simple and occasional daytime shows. That was so I could be available to spend more time at home with Joannie. TB: I know you still perform but you must often think back to all the many events and adventures in your performing life; but thinking back is there one thing, big or small that stuck in your mind? CL: Well, as you say, there are so many stories and I could write a book. Maybe I should...but thinking back over my magic career, a defining moment comes to mind. During my first year learning the nuances of magic, I was advised by my mentor, Jimmy Kane, that I probably could not handle half dollars - which I should try to do my coin routines with quarters. I WAS DEVASTATED. But this gave me the impetus to try even harder. I would show him! I practiced even more, so I could become proficient with half-dollar coin routines. This led me to back-palming, which I could NOT master. Getting that coin hidden resulted in an arthritic look, further complicated by the holes between my skinny fingers. My solution was a Back-Clip between the index and middle fingers. This, I would ultimately practice for TWO years before actually using it in public. I TOLD you I was dedicated. TB: Yes indeed you are. I can personally vouch for that. During one of our conversations, we spoke about some of the offices you held and accolades you received. Is there one that you value the most? CL: Yes. It is what I believe might be the most telling of my magic life. In December, 2008, my friends at the Dallas Magic Clubs saw fit to designate ME as the official "Dean - of the Dallas Magic Clubs". This action may have been due to my advanced age, or an effort to make me stop performing at each and every meeting, but I like to think that it was because "magic" has brought me one of the greatest of treasures - "friendship". TB: I, and most certainly, all your many friends in the US and around the world would wholeheartedly concur that it is a richly deserved accolade. We stepped away from our conventional show format and are trying something new for us. This year's Salute to Magic will feature Paul Gertner's highly acclaimed show, Ten Fingers - A Play of Magic. Ten Fingers: A Play of Magic, is a one-man performance told through the eyes and hands of three-time world champion sleight-of-hand artist Paul Gertner. Paul takes you into the world of a ten year old from Pittsburgh who, growing up in a blue-collar steelworker family is exposed to the art of magic and illusion through books in the local library. Audience members become part of the show as they join Paul on his journey from practicing card tricks on his parent's kitchen table, to his guest appearances on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, to his First Place finish at the Olympics of Magic in Madrid, Spain. The audience is left to wonder what is behind the magic and Paul's drive to perform it. The latter is revealed during the show with a magical tribute to the steelworker father who, without realizing it, creatively set the magic in motion. Diamond Jim Tyler Lecture Review -------------------------------------------- Message by Sean Taylor (Aust) Diamond Jim Tyler lectured in Sydney on Thursday to a full house at Taylor's Magic Shop and I just wanted to take a moment to encourage my friends across the Tasman to attend his lectures in Auckland, Palmerston North and Christchurch this coming week. This is the first time I have met Diamond Jim Tyler but he truly is a really nice guy with a genuine passion for people and for magic. Rarely have I seen so much useable and commercial material in one evening. Jim had us laughing and amazed from the very first effect (something with a Red Bull which I'd expect will ensure an increase in sales of that soft drink!). Some 20 or so effects were shown and it was obvious throughout that Jim is a 'worker' and thinks deeply about how to make his magic straightforward, entertaining and easy to follow. His tips and bits with the ring and string were clearly the result of thousands of performances. He has a pleasing and engaging style and is not 'in your face' like some of today's hyped up, over enthusiastic close-up workers. (Some of whom would do better to do tricks with Red Bull rather than drink it). A sure sign of a good evening is an empty dealer table and Jim's very reasonably priced books, DVDs and tricks were all gone by the end of the night. He has extra stocks to collect en route so you guys don't miss out in NZ. Diamonds shine and are rare and valuable. An evening with this much shine and this much value is a rare thing too. Zaney Blaney Early Promo Audio Tape Of Act - 1963 -------------------------------------------- Message by Zaney Blaney (US) Dear friends in magic, Back in the early days before modern high tech video tapes became available, I used a 45 RPM record to mail to potential clients and agents. I explained in my covering letter, "You won't know from this sound recording exactly what I am doing in my act. But you will hear the audience response in this excerpt from my 45 minute show. If you would like to have your audience laugh as much as this one did, I hope you will consider booking me for your next banquet entertainment program." This audio clip was taped in 1963 at the Shamrock Hilton Hotel in Houston, Texas for the 1500 attendees of the American Municipal Assn. national convention, all the mayors and top city officials from the major cities in the USA. I am in the midst of my pickpocket routine at the end of my act. I believe I was the only act that thought of using such a promotional tool. As crazy an idea as it may seem today, it got me a lot of shows through the years before videos and DVDs came along.
