Life As A Magical Partner #163 - Kyle & Kelly Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com poofersgrl@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com What is a magical partner? A magical partner is a term that I have not often heard used by anyone. It is a term that I feel very strongly about. To me a magical partner is a person male or female who not only assists a magician but also plays an intricate role in the shows and performances. They are able to discuss specific issues with each other, such as performing, financial, costuming and choreography, how to set up the show etc. without feeling like their ideas do not count or have meaning .These items are just the tip of the iceberg as to what you as a magical partner can take part in. A magical partner to me is much more than being just an assistant. The terms I hear people use most often are assistant, box jumper and stage hand, however I rarely hear the term magical partner. If you want to take a more active role in magic, then maybe becoming a magical partner is for you. As a magical partner you are sharing the magic with each other and you feel like you are part of an overall team. It is this team that works equally towards the success of the show. Along with assisting a magician a magical partner can help in many different ways both on stage and off. You are a very important part of who they are, what they do, and their role in the magic community. Some of the ways your role as a partner can help are, the creative process, the marketing, loading and unloading of props, setting up the show and more. Kelly works along side with me as my equal. We both share equally in the responsibilities and tasks that make our show what it is. We do many of the things listed above together, and you as a magical partner can as well. First, helping with the creative process can take on many forms. By helping with the creative process you can help each other come up with ideas for an act, what works, what doesn't work, and how to sequence certain acts or the best way to perform an illusion. It also gives a second set of eyes to a routine that may or may not be right. You can help each other creatively by watching videos, reading books or lecture notes, and even seeing live performances for ideas. For example, Kelly was recently watching a video on stage movement and choreography, and she saw a move that she felt would be appropriate for our sword basket illusion. She called me over and we watched it together, and then decided to work on the move together to see if it would work for us. This is just one example of how your role as a magical partner can help with the creative process of magic. Another way the magical partner can help is with the marketing. By this I mean, both of you can help research where you might want to perform, take phone calls, send out press releases, mail the promotional packets, keep up the database, emails, book the shows and gather as much information as you can. Everyone knows that to run a successful magic business there is an awful lot that takes place off the stage. It is one reason why they call it "show business". Often people are not aware of just how much is involved in the running of a magic business when you are not performing. If you are involved in a magical partnership, the roles and responsibilities listed above are divided equally. You are both working together as a team to help things run smooth, and for the ultimate success of the business. Finally, when you both arrive or leave the venue or event, while either of you may be busy meeting with the client, the other person can help get things moving by unloading or loading the items into/from your vehicle, and begin to either set them up or break down. This saves time especially if you are back to back with another entertainer or band, like at a big festival or fair. By doing this, it helps both of you feel less rushed. Sometimes, you or your partner may also need to run the sound. Kelly does this for me and even when I decide to change a routine mid show, she knows what music to play because she knows the show due to the fact that she is an equal part in it. If you know the show, you can also help by setting up the show together. Each person taking a direct part in the task at hand. Either of you should know what tricks, illusions and acts you both will be doing. If you are performing at a theater, either of you can also strike the stage, check out the lighting and do sound checks are just some of the things you can do. Knowing the show is a huge advantage to being a magical partner. It is also a trust that exists and is created by the partnership. In conclusion, your role as a magical partner is much more than just being a magician's assistant. You can be WAY more than another table that moves on and off the stage. By doing some or all of the above, you feel like you are an equal partner, and know that you help make the show and the business a success. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. Tony Brook in Conversation with Jason Andrews (Part2) ------------------------------------------ Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA JA: Yes Boomers is a great place. I know it holds special memories for you as well. This time, when you were last here in Vegas, I got to be there too and attend your lecture, and let me say, Tony, it was FANTASTIC, I really learned some great effects, so thanks to you! Ariann, as you know was opening for The Amazing Jonathan and could not make it but Frank Zak, Lupe Nielsen, Steve Dacri were there and several other good mutual friends of ours as well. That was a fun night. TB: Yes it was. Well, now that you brought it up it was great having you there because thanks to you, Frank Zak, & Christian Doleshall the set-up was just great. The lecture tables, cameras and lights were all set up and running smoothly ..well, I bring up lighting because I know that you, lights and Magic are all interwoven...share some of that and the beginnings ... JA: Well, working the lights feeds the habit and keeps me off the streets between gigs & pays for promo packs too!!!! He! He! He! Seriously, that is also another love of mine and over the years I have been hired to handle lighting for several shows and projects. I think I bring an aspect to it that goes beyond being a good lighting Director /Technician. I can bring all my knowledge and experience as a Performer to the aspect of lighting. Speaking of our mutual friends Frank Zak and Ariann Black, back in 2002 I was hired for the Arian Black show "Secrets" at the Fitzgeralds to be the swing technician, running lights and sound, for Scott Hitchcock! It's, as you know Tony, really a very small world. In 2004, after I graduated from High school I was hired by Coast casinos as a lighting technician. I've had many opportunities working with this company. I was the house magician for 2 shows that appeared in the Coast showrooms, Forever Plaid and Marty Allen. There was also an added bonus, I've had the opportunity to watch and learn from seasoned entertainers and their crews. Speaking of seasoned Entertainers, Frank as you already know is an excellent & Experienced Magician and also a great photographer. He has taken some amazing shots of me that anyone can see on his site and mine. TB: Yes. Frank is really brilliant. I think it is to do with what you were talking about earlier. The fact that he is also a performer helps him look thru the lens not only as a photographer but also as an experienced performer. Speaking of mutual friends take us on a brief journey after 2002 and your links with another mutual pal of ours ...... JA: Sure. Over the next few years, working as a lighting tech, I worked on my magic and took advice from a lot of the local guys and in 2003, I met Steve Daly who was appearing in the Showgirls of Magic show. For the next 5 years Steve would share his advice and experiences and mentor me and my magic. In 2007, Steve invited me to join his summer tour as a special guest. We toured the country for 6 months playing night clubs, comedy clubs, and doing magic lectures all over the U.S. We attended 8 magic conventions and I won 11 national magic awards. In 2008, Steve invited me back for his 4 month summer tour and we performed at 2 magic conventions, comedy clubs, night clubs, and continued to lecture. It was an experience that changed the course of my life forever. It was truly an enlightening experience to the true world of being on stage! After returning to Las Vegas in October 2008, I took a 3 month break from magic, to re-evaluate where I wanted to take my magic, the things in life that were important to me, and I came back to magic with fresh eyes. I think when you step away from something that you enjoy, you love it even more when you come back. And that has certainly been true for me. In May 2009, I heard of a local variety television show that was incorporating local Las Vegas entertainers who would appear on Univision. I cold called and offered my services. After three months of leaving messages and being passed from person to person, I finally spoke to the man in charge and in September of 2009, I shot the special for Univision. Sharing the spotlight with me on the show was a magician I had heard of numerous times in the past but never actually met him, Nick Lewin. Since the filming Nick and his gracious wife Susan, have given me a lot of great advice and have offered to help me with my goals as an entertainer. I honestly believe everything happens for a reason. If I had not been as persistent as I was about getting on the variety show, I would not have met Nick. Recently he asked me to join him in performing at The Magic Castle in Hollywood in 2010. Performing at The Castle has been a goal of mine for the last 3 years and on Christmas day I received a call from Jack Goldfinger saying that I was booked for 2010. What a Christmas present. Another person that has made a huge impression on my magic, and my life, is a local magician Les McKinney. Les has been a very fine professional magician his entire life and has helped me, beyond imagination, with my illusions, presentation and entertaining. The list of people that have made an impression on my life and with my magic is numerous. Les McKinney, Nick and Susan Lewin, Earl Cheney, Rob& Carol Allen, Ariann Black, Tony Brook, Lance Burton, Jeff McBride, Steve Daly, Doc Green, Gary Darwin, Ray Anderson, Ronn Lucas, Scott Hitchcock, Joanie Spina, Joey Vasquez, John Tudor, Frank Zak, Christian Doleshall, just to name a few. TB: Thanks for including me in your list. Truly appreciated. I also have to tell you that you are bringing back some great memories for me. I vividly recall being taken to see 'Showgirls of Magic' in the same year you met Steve. Ariann and Frank took us. After the show they introduced my family and I to Steve, Antonio Hoyos and the rest of the cast. We had fun hanging out and over the next few days Steve entertained us Royally and even took us to meet great Vegas illusion builders. And of course, we got to eat too! Those who know Steve will know he likes his dining!!!! I've been on the bill at The SAM and TAOM with him over the last few years and more recently hung out with him in Vegas. I'm not going to chat more on this because ...it's a secret .but several of the above mentioned names are also part of this In Conversation Series ... Anyway, changing the subject, when we were in Vegas last , you kindly picked me & EJ up at the airport and indeed drove us around to a few places; I want to talk about your License Plate: ON IN 5. Cool PR. Share the story .... End of Part 2- More to follow next week (Hidden in this article are deliberate grammatical & spelling mistakes. Broken Wand - Allen Swift -------------------------------------------- Message by George Schindler(US) Allen Swift dies at age 86 Allen Swift (Ira Stadlen) died on April 18, 2010 - He was best known as the "Man of a Million " voices and was an all around performer. When Buffalo Bob took ill it was Allen's doing "Howdy Doody's voice for more than a year. The voice on the comedy 'Safari" tape was Allen's when he teamed with Lee Noble to produce the trick. Allen Swift appeared on many shows at S A M Parent Assembly #1 and New York's IBM Ring #26. -------------------------------------------- 9. Royalty Free Music ------------------------------------------- Message by Paul Romhany (NZ) Just want to announce a brand new joint project with my company and an international musician who works closely with Cirque du Soleil as well as writer and music teacher for Penn and Teller. Christian Tamburr is one of America's leading musicians, composers, arrangers and performers - he has written original music for many well known stars and after two years of working on this new project for magicians, I'm pleased to announce it's all ready. Christian has released his first album for the general magic community featuring six royalty free tracks - all different styles for different types of routines. To have somebody so well known in the business start offering his services to the general magic community is very special indeed - and this is certainly a chance for every performer to take hold of. For those who perform on stages, on cruise ships, on television or theatres will know, having royalty free music is very important, otherwise you will have to pay a fee for the songs you use every time you perform. In today's market where the music companies are really cracking down on performers using non-royalty free music, we are offering something special to magicians worldwide. You have the chance to purchase each track individually or purchase the entire album or royalty free music. This is the first of many albums that we are currently working on. Christian will also make himself available to magicians who want to have original music composed and performed just for them! If you are looking to enhance your act then be sure to check out the website. For more information visit: http://www.extrememagicmakeover.com/ -------------------------------------------- 10. Matt Marcy's Hit Theatrical Magic Show -------------------------------------------- Message by Matt Marcy (US) Matt Marcy's Hit Theatrical Magic Show Returns to Los Angeles for 10 Performances Only! Tickets on sale now! Disillusioned: Confessions of a Serial Magician runs at The Imagined Life Theater in Los Angeles from May 21 - June 19, Fridays and Saturdays. Based on a true story, Disillusioned is the hit theatrical magic show that follows comic-magician Matt Marcy as he struggles to find respect in an art form that doesn't get any. In a journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance, Marcy's on-again, off-again love affair with being a magician mirrors his own struggle to define, understand, and ultimately accept himself for who he is. Blending magic, comedy, storytelling, multimedia and audience interaction, this 90-minute one-of-a-kind theatrical piece weaves its varied elements seamlessly into a hilarious yet poignant narrative...or so the author claims. Here's what they're saying: "A formidable new talent: inventive, charming, and polished." -Teller "Original and creative. A slightly disturbing, gratifying and hilarious look into the journey of a magician." -Jonathan Levit "Disillusioned is a new and charming confection, combining the best of magic and theatre." -John Lovick "Combines original magic with fresh ideas in staging and theater to create something entirely new. This is at once a hilarious and important show to see." -Danny Cole "Boldly original and endlessly entertaining." -Ivan Amodei "Disillusioned is easily one of the most honest and personal magic shows you will ever see." -Derek Delgaudio "Matt Marcy's creativity and charisma are in plentiful supply in Disillusioned -- a very entertaining piece of theater." -David Regal More information and tickets are available online at www.disillusionedshow.com -------------------------------------------- 14. British Ring Convention In Eastbourne -------------------------------------------- Message by Bob Hayden (UK) Mr Manual Muerte. On hearing or looking at his name you may think he comes from Spain. Not so. He is German and hails from Hamburg. It is a name that in this country a large number of magicians are not well-acquainted. This will change after he is seen at Eastbourne in September when he performs in the Saturday Night International Magic Show, the International Close-up Gala and has delivered a lecture. For over ten years he has been performing internationally and multilingually as an entertainer and magician. What is the background to Manuel? It was in 1977 that he obtained his first magic kit becoming a freelance magician in 1986. It is interesting to note that in 1988 he was German Champion of Magic before graduating nag from college in 1988. He toured central Europe with various bands between 1990 -1994 coupling this with being a student at the faculty of cultural arts in Luneberg. Further awards came his way when he was crowned World champion of comedy magic and presented with the 'Sarmoti' award by Siegfried and Roy in Las Vegas. He is proud to have finished in the silver medal position for close-up magic at the Lisbon F.I.S.M. in 2000. Whether at the close-up table or on stage Manual gives a wide variety of original performances by mixing the art of magic with his dazzling entertainment qualities to create his own unique brand of comedy magic. In his stage show he treats his audience to a series of good humoured digs at the expense of established magical entertainment by impersonating an ageing magician by mixing the traditional school of show-biz with modern comedy. The main victim of his cultivated chaos is his charming assistant Silvana Busoni who not only sings like an angel but is often in danger of becoming one. His close-up show combines irreverent comedy and brilliant magical skills performing with cigars, banknotes, white mice and a whole lot more. His lecture provides an insight to his magical techniques. He has lectured all over mainland Europe as well as at the F.F.F.F. Convention and the Magic Castle. For many it is predicted Mr Manual Muerte will be the highlight of their Convention. The line-up for the International Close-up Show has been completed with the confirmed addition of Sean Carpenter. It's going to be a great show! In contrast to the relatively unknown magician in this country to one who really requires no introduction to Conventioneers is Peter Scarlett close-up and corporate magician, inventor and dealer. Magic came into Peter's life in 1950 when he read in the Christmas issue of the 'Meccano Magazine' of that year a trick described by Norman Hunter with wooden blocks. He set to and made it up in cardboard and performed it at his school's Christmas party. He was fortunate enough to meet Bill Fargie 'The Vest Pocket Magician who became his early mentor and who introduced him to his first magic club 'The Sussex Magic Circle' where he became a student member alongside Nick Lewin, Peter Steadman, Janet Clare and Cynthia Neptune all now professional magicians. They must have been some outstanding tutors in the Sussex Magic Circle to turn out such a distinguished quintet of magicians! With Marconick's 'Silken Bombshell' and Lewis Ganson's 'Bags of Everything' Peter won his first talent competition at the first ever Burgess Hill 'Goose Fayre'in 1956. His first experience of appearing on a full size stage came when he met Len Jennings and became a member of the 'Bognor Regis Magic Circle'. Each year they produced a magic show at the town's 'Esplanade Theatre'. It gave Peter the chance of becoming a regular performer on the show. For him it was an opportunity he eagerly awaited each year and most especially at Easter 1961 when the show ran for a whole week. The first trick he invented, manufactured and marketed was 'Twin-set' an effect that just keeps on selling. He formed Sound Ideas in 1990 changing it later to Peter Scarlett Magic and becoming a full time dealer/performer in 1993. In twenty years of dealing Peter has brought to the magical fraternity a multitude of commercial effects that have become regular items in many professional magicians' acts. His early magical influences were Slydini, Al Koran and Marvyn Roy but it was Ken Brooke demonstrating the vanishing card case and diminishing card routine at a Harry Stanley Day at Victoria Halls in London that gave him the very effects he was looking for to open his act, two effects that he still uses to this very day. As a compere Peter is superb giving precise introductions to each act with assurance at the same time, if required to do so, provide fitting and amusing fill ins with an unbelievable confidence ease and with such panache. To have Peter Scarlett in any show is a prodigious asset. Here are another two of the Stars of Magic that you will be able to enjoy by being at the British Ring Convention in Eastbourne September 22nd to 26th.
