Editor's Message -------------------------------------------- Richard Webster (Auckland, New Zealand) was rushed into hospital Saturday 5th June in the early hours of the morning with severe pain in the chest. It was discovered that he had two blood clots in one of his lungs. The good news is that the clots are now dissolved and he is hoping to return home this coming Monday. Richard has many friends all over the world and I know he would love to read you words of encouragement over this trying time. Richard's e-mail is: Richard.Webster@xtra.co.nz ------------------------------------- The feedback about the 30th New Zealand International Magicians Convention has been AWESOME. Paul Daniels One Night Only At The Magic Castle in Hollywood -------------------------------------------- Published with the permission of Milt Larsen: We have often featured special events at The Castle. These events have a small additional fee to pay for, or better put, to help pay for, the thousands of dollars it costs to bring the acts to you. These events have featured various magicians, many living legends in the world of magic. On June 13, we again have a special night, and the magician featured is more than a legend in magic, he is an international star and a television icon in the UK: Paul Daniels. To those of us involved in magic in America, we perhaps know of Paul Daniels' success overseas, but few know the extent of it. Paul's television series was so popular he became an iconic star in the way Johnny Carson was a star in the US. More than just a magician, Paul Daniels is a comedian, an entertainer, who, by virtue of his talent, was adopted and celebrated by his homeland. And when someone is "celebrated," they are a celebrity. People don't watch Paul Daniels on television because they want to see a magic trick, they watch because they want to see Paul Daniels. We are fortunate to be able to offer the membership a chance to see this performer on stage at The Magic Castle. Below is an announcement supplied to me by Mark Nelson (Alan Bursky was not consulted). The opening quote is a sample of Mr. Daniel's comic style, not our feelings about his upcoming appearance. "YOU'LL LIKE THIS - NOT ALOT, BUT YOU'LL LIKE IT!" PAUL DANIELS ONE NIGHT ONLY AT THE MAGIC CASTLE Paul Daniels, the famed UK television magician whose long-running series on the BBC brought him worldwide acclaim, is currently traveling around the world. He arrives in Los Angeles just in time to visit the Magic Castle for the first time since 2003, offering a special "Magic In Concert" appearance, featuring his quick wit and astonishing wizardry in the Palace of Mystery on Sunday, June 13, at 6:00 pm. Daniels and his delightful wife Debbie starred in The Paul Daniels' Magic Show from 1979 until 1994. Paul received the 1982 Magician of the Year Award and the 2005 Masters Fellowship from the Academy of Magical Arts. His newest DVD release, Paul Daniels' Inner Secrets of Professional Magic, will be released in July of this year. Don't miss this rare opportunity to see Paul Daniels performing his most renowned routines live and in person at the Magic Castle! Tickets for this One Night Only event are available now for $30 for members, $35 for non-members, at www.magiccastle.com/eventtickets, or by calling Ben Roman at (323) 851-3313, extension 434. - David Regal -------------------------------------------- 3. Nick Lewin At Harrah's -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin Appearing at Harrah's Las Vegas June 10th - June 23rd Dark Sunday and Monday ShowTime's 1.00pm and 3.00pm -------------------------------------------- 4. News From Vienna -------------------------------------------- Message by Kurt Freitag (Vienna) Mr. Klaghofer opened his "Zauberkasten" museum (Magic Box Museum) in Vienna and he achieved an entry in the Guinness Book of Records in the category "most magic boxes". The address is: 1120 Vienna, Schönbrunnerstraße 262, opening hours are every first Sunday per month, homepage www.manfred-klaghofer.de or www.zauberkasten-museum.at. Even Mr. Jack H. Monshouwer, president of Hanky Panky Toys Thailand - the largest magic boxes producer - was at the opening in Vienna. I also have already been there and there are many fantastic and old magic boxes from all over the world (particularly France and Germany). -------------------------------------------- 5. More Remarkable Magic - Nick Lewin #40 -------------------------------------------- Message from Nick Lewin (US) Improving on Al Koran. Tough but possible! I have always been a big fan of the great mentalist Al Koran. I have studied his books and every other source of material I can get my hands on. Sadly though, I never had the good fortune to see him live. However his influence has been pervasive throughout my career. Of all the true greats I have missed seeing perform live; Koran is at the top of the list. I was always rather intrigued that one of his three favorite closing tricks was his 'Headline Countdown,' from the book Al Koran's Legacy. I played with it, worked it and it never quite got the reaction that I knew it must have done to be in such a favored position in Koran's act, which just went from strong to stronger. I would return to it occasionally but could never make it click the way I thought it should. The routine is first credited to Edmund Rowland and published in the Pentagram in 1952. Yikes, that was the year I was born! Martin Breese just released a new version entitled 'Market Update,' and it has kept the strength of the effect, added some great touches and taken away not only the extra gimmick but also the memory work. I fell in love with it, and while it may not ever become a closing effect for me, due to the nature and structure of my act, I suspect it will be a regular and strong addition to my show. Nothing improves a comedy magic show more than a strong piece of mentalism. Magic you can really get your teeth into. One of the strong points about 'Market Update' is how slickly it fits into a corporate show or business meeting. The props involved can be bought in the hotel gift shop. In fact with just the tiniest piece of 'jiggery pokery' you can give an audience member 20 bucks to go and buy them himself during the show. I very seldom wholeheartedly endorse a commercial routine but this one is too good to miss. I have no hidden motives in recommending this routine to any magician who can sell a routine to the public. Well maybe I do have a slight motive, I never ever need to see the Mental Epic performed again and I'm getting pretty sick of seeing that same damn book turn up in the 'Mother of all Booktests'! I have become quite a fan of Martin's skill as a magic dealer. Martin has been around the magic scene for a long time and watched, listened and learned from the very best. He has a pitch perfect eye for commercial material and quality of production that reminds me of my early mentor Ken Brooke. His knowledge of magic is that of a scholar but his understanding of the commercial potential of a trick is that of a performer: a truly great combination. 'Market Update' is available from your local magic dealer or you can reach Martin Breese via his business website www.abracadabra.co.uk and check out his other goodies, including his new totally revamped version of the Koran books. Hands On vs. Hands Off Clients - #169 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com poofersgrl@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com It is pretty common sense that there is a vast array of client types. There are also a huge amount of ways in which clients want to deal with you. Each event you do presents itself with a different client whom you have to learn to read well. It is important to learn about these varieties of clients and how clients want to interact with you. Two of the more common types are what I refer to as the "hands on" and "hands off" clients. Each are very different and it is helpful to know they exist and the differences between each. The reason it is so important is that understanding how they think and work can help you to still create solutions for them without misinterpreting the signals they may be sending to you. Some client's lack of interaction with you at the event can often be misrepresented as them not caring. This is not always the truth so it is important to understand why certain clients act and work a certain way. This can allow you to remain calm and know how to handle these situations when they come up. It would first be helpful to define just exactly what I mean by the term hands on and hands off clients. Let me take a few moments to define these terms as how I see them. Many folks may recognize these character traits but may refer to them in different terms. It is my goal to simply make you aware of them and then discuss the reasons behind their ways of thinking. Hands On Client: A hands on client is one that wants to be and needs to be involved in everything from the moment of first contact right through the entire day of the event itself. These are folks who meet you when you get there, show you your area to set up, talk to you about what they expect from you and are usually around your performance area most of the time. They are like the football coach making sure everything is going according to plan by being "hands on". These types of clients are also the ones who are there for you to ask questions if there are issues that arise. Instead of talking with an assistant, they prefer to handle it themselves. They would much rather you come to them for any and all needs as they feel they have more control that way. Hands Off Client: A hands off client is a much different type of individual. This type of client is one who handles a lot of stuff with you up front but on the day of the event itself, they tend to be very hands off. This simply means that they are not always there to greet you or to show you your area or to even answer your questions. This does not mean they do not care. Usually this type of client wants to delegate responsibilities to others in his or her group. It is not uncommon for a hands off client to have a person responsible for stage and another for sound and even another for parking. This person's goal usually is to have everything answered before you get to the event and prefer you to just do your thing as you would normally do. They would much rather stay out of your way than to be hounding you or looking over your shoulder. Now neither of these is right nor wrong. They are simply character traits one gets to know about the more you start dealing with clients. This is also not to say these are the ONLY traits or characters of clients. There are far more of them as each person is unique. However, it is safe to say that knowing these 2 main ones can really help you a great deal in learning how to cope and work successfully with them. Each have certain needs and wants that you can directly solve. It just may mean taking a different approach to do it. For example, some may perceive that the hands on client is one that is pushy and bossy and always in your face for every little thing. This can be true to a degree, but we must also realize that this type of client wants so badly for their event to run and be as perfect as it can be. They fear if they let anyone else do it, they lose control or something will go wrong. If this is the case, then the goal in working with a hands on client is simply allowing yourself to stay calm and solve their needs for them the best you can. It means really talking with them a lot more than you may usually do to really let them feel comfortable. It may mean talking to them when you arrive and allowing them to show you your area even if you may already know it. Let them feel in control by helping them and assuring them things will be perfect. You staying calm helps them stay calm. Now on the other side of the coin, the hands off client can be perceived as someone who simply does not care. There often is a misperception that this type of client is leaving you to hang and do all the work while they do nothing. I am not here to tell you that this is not true. It sometimes is. However a true hands off client does not always think this way. Often times a hands off client respects the fact that you are a professional and simply wants you to do what you do best without them getting in your way. A hands off client may also have so much they are doing that day that they simply cannot be around you as often as you may like. So do not be offended if this type of client is not always there. However an effective hands off client is one who delegates really well. If you feel you are working with a hands off client, it is essential to get every detail worked out in advance of the show date. Really work with them to know what you need and who you need to seek or contact when you get there. This way when you arrive, you are in control and do not have to rely on the client so much. I hope talking about these two types of clients will make you more aware of them. I am sure we have all seen them but may not fully have understood why they act the way they do. Understanding the differences can really help you to be able to always provide a consistent level of professionalism no matter what the situation. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. -------------------------------------------- 7. Tony Brook In Conversation With Harry Maurer (Part 1) ------------------------------------------ Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA Harry Maurer is elegant, sophisticated and charming. Together with Carol-Ann, his beautiful wife and stage partner, they bring to Magical Entertainment a style and Class that is uniquely their own. Based in Houston, Texas they perform at Corporate functions, major venues in Vegas and Atlantic City and on Cruise ships. Harry knows about sartorial elegance. Always well-groomed and impeccably dressed, he is the epitome of a World Class Performer. I first met Harry a few years ago when I was lecturing in Houston. He came up after my lecture, introduced himself and complimented me on my clothes. A fine compliment from someone who appreciates style. We soon discovered that we had several mutual friends in common and together we have often had dinner at the home of Scott and Kathy Wells. We also had a delightful time at Cherie Kay's home when she threw a huge birthday party for me. Many Houston notables attended. Naturally, Harry and Carol-Ann were there too and a great time was had by all. http://www.hmmagic.com/ TB: Hello Harry. Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to chat a while. I know you and Carol-Ann keep busy and indeed, you have performed at various prestigious venues in Vegas, Atlantic City and several other top-Class venues both in the US and abroad. You both are also highly experienced in working aboard Cruise Liners. Most of us know what it is like being on the road but working Cruises must mean a different mind-set. It must mean a whole new way of doing and organizing things. HM: Hello Tony. My pleasure. As always, great spending time with you. I have always worked in so many venues - cruises, nightclubs, theaters and casinos in Las Vegas, Laughlin, Biloxi and Atlantic City (where our show was nominated for an "Atlantic City Entertainer of the Year Award"! I typically spend about half of my year on cruise ships. It's funny how, years ago, cruise ship entertainment was looked down upon by fellow entertainers. But for me, I always looked at it as the "New Vaudeville" - great Broadway quality theaters where you perform for a prolonged period of time with the camaraderie of other entertainers - just like in the time of Vaudeville! You are right though, working aboard cruise ships means you have to have a lot more organizational skills than you would probably need on land. Not just in planning the shows, but in arranging the freight and travel so that it goes flawlessly. For example, if you are working on land and are driving to a gig and you miss an exit on the road -- that's not so bad, but when you miss a flight - you're in trouble! By the time you catch up, the ship could be in a completely different country! You also need good communication skills because your support staff - the lighting people, sound people and backstage crew are not your crew, so you have to have everything pre-planned and organized for them so you don't waste their time! You also don't have the luxury of "rehearsing" your show on the ships because the theater or showroom is used for so many different activities day and night. Your rehearsals are meant at first to "tech" the show - getting the lighting and sound cues down pat, and later to clean up the cues - it is not the time or place for you to learn your act! (Although there may be times that you can find an hour late at night to go through things, but that is a luxury!) TB: I have several friends who work Cruise ships and I have a lot of admiration for them. Obviously, you can't just run down to the nearest Magic store for extra Flash paper or another deck of Bikes. So, does that mean you have to structure the act or acts in a way that deals only with the barest of essentials or does that mean packing extra supplies .just in case...... HM: I don't think packing a minimal show is a good idea on a cruise ship. You are hired to do the very best shows you can do and you should bring whatever you need to bring with you to achieve that goal. On the one hand, you don't want to carry hundreds of pounds of needless supplies and props you are not going to use! But you certainly want to make sure that you have the backups, spares parts and any supplies you need because it's highly unlikely you are going to find what you are used to using in various ports around the world! Walter Zaney Blaney Final Stage Appearance -------------------------------------------- Message by Walter Zaney Blaney (US) I am sending this to my family and my magic friends who I thought might like to read of my last stage appearance after a sixty year career in show business. It was a nice way to end my days as a performer. My magician daughter, Becky Blaney, was there to be with me. Also my long time magician friend, Jimmy Walker, who helped start my career with our duo magic stage show in college days. And also Dan Summers, my friend and builder of my stage illusion inventions, including my Ladder Levitation, the subject of this review. walter@walterblaney.com _____________________________________ A review of Walter Blaney's presentation at the Magic Collector's Association annual convention in Chicago, May 14, 2010. For full Magic Collectors Weekend review go to Chicagomagic.blogspot.com Written by William Pack, member MCA. The afternoon session started with the emotional high point of the convention, the last stage performance of Walter "Zaney" Blaney. Walter has performed for over sixty years and is the inventor of the Ladder Suspension. I should say his world famous, the most incredible, greatest suspension ever, Ladder Suspension. If you haven't seen it, pop over to youtube.com and search for it. I'll wait. Did you go? It fooled the heck out of you didn't it? Don't worry, you are not the only one. It is one of the best kept secrets in magic and should stay that way. I have some ideas, but not talking, so don't ask. After performing his ever present vanishing bird cage, Walter sat before an enthralled audience of just under 200 to tell the story of his invention. Sitting, listening, to Walter is like an evening with a favorite Uncle. He is the personification of easy charm. Seductive, but in a friendly way. I can see why he was such a successful performer; no booker could resist that kind of traditional style and class. He spoke for just over an hour. I wish it had been two. Some highlights from his talk: He spent years performing the Suspension in miniature with a model and continually fooled his magic buddies. He took five curtain calls the first time he performed it at a magic convention. Jack Gwynne originally refused to learn the secret and finally gave in at the urging of Walter. He badly fooled the original Mercury astronauts who amazed Walter with their gullibility. He really showed how smart and classy Merv Griffin was and how Merv saved his performance. Last, David Copperfield begged for 5 years before Walter would let him do the illusion. The details of that and much more of Walter's incredible life will appear soon in a must read book. Then, it was time. Julie Eng was to be the last floatee. If you saw it on YouTube, you know what we saw. But I felt a chill, goose bumps. My eyes welled up. I would not be the only one. Everyone I spoke with confessed the same. We were seeing history, something us historians and collectors only read about. Of course, it was a standing ovation. The performance deserved it. Afterward I would feel sad. The world has been robbed of this experience. No one will perform the Ladder like Walter. He may not perform any more, but I hope now he'll find time to make the convention circuit and collect the rewards of being legendary. If you see him say hello, you'll like him. -------------------------------------------- 12.
