"Make Believe" Wins -------------------------------------------- Message by Bill Wells "Make Believe", the film about six young teenage magicians as they prepare for and compete at the World Magic Seminar has won Best Feature Documentary and $50,000 Cash Prize at the Los Angeles Film Festival. Now let's hope the film gets picked up by TV or another distributor so that it can be more widely seen. Looking For Jack Kodell's Cat! -------------------------------------------- Message by Dan Stapleton Jack Kodell is considered the originator of the "bird act". Imagine a convention with no magicians doing a dove act. Later in his career Jack had his parakeets fly into the mouth of a fiberglass-grinning cat. The cat stood approx. 3 ft. tall. Although most of Jack's equipment is now part of David Copperfield's collection, Jack would like to know the whereabouts of the cat-prop. You can see a photo of this prop as the cover photo of Jack's upcoming bio-book at www.jackkodell.com. He feels that the cat is most likely boxed up in someone's attic. -------------------------------------------- 5. More Remarkable Magic - Nick Lewin #46 -------------------------------------------- Message from Nick Lewin (US) Odds & Etc's of interest to Magic Lovers. Greetings to everyone out there in the digital world, I want to use my column to catch you up on a couple of recent and a future projects that I am lucky enough to be involved in. As regular readers of this column will know I am a very big fan of the work of Ron Wilson and consider him to have been one of the most commercial and effective magicians that I have seen. I am delighted to say that Ron has completed a book of his magical memoirs, it is a must read for people who want to know a little more about the 'actual' flesh and blood men behind the legends of magic. Anyone with a true love of magic will be unable to put this volume down. It is also lavishly illustrated with rare photographs from many private sources. I was very proud when Ron asked me to write the introduction to the book. I was even more excited when I managed to fly down to Los Angeles to interview Ron as part of a DVD that will be included with each copy of the book. I got to ask Ron many questions that I knew very few people would have been able to answer. The Video also includes footage from Ron's classic Castle act and I was able to discuss these gems of magic as someone who has studied them for 40 years. Ron had great and insightful answers. There is also footage of R. Wilson performing Ron's ultra cool 'Highland Hop' routine in an impromptu session. Hell, we even get to see Ron himself show exactly how a 'Strike Second' should be dealt. There will be a limited edition of 100 specially bound, numbered and signed by Ron which are likely to become highly sought after collector's items even before the rest of the 1000 book run is sold. The books will be available through the Internet and I will give you the 'Head's Up' when all the final details are determined. I must give a very special thank you to Steve Mitchell who used his considerable knowledge and skills to get the book out into the world! I was also very pleased to be asked to contribute a chapter and trick to 'Mysteries of my Friends 2' the new book by Burton Sperber. This is a fabulous book of fine magic that has been lovingly constructed by a man who knows his magic. The book is available from richard@magicbookshop.com While Burt is mostly familiar in the magic world as one of the handful of top-league collectors, there is a very savvy performer an inch below the surface. I wrote a column about my first meeting with Burt where it is honest to say he surprised, confounded and amazed me with a deck of cards, and I have seen some of the best. If you would like to read an amended/updated version of this article, which first appeared in Magic New Zealand, Check it out on my blogsite. http://remarkablemagic.com/2010/06/10/387/ Finally I am delighted to say that I will have the privilege to be one of the participants in Michael Finney's 'Dry Heat Classic' golf tournament in Phoenix, Arizona. The event is into its 14th year and has mixed: golf, celebrities, magic, fun, and great food; and has become one of the most popular annual events in Phoenix. Oh, and along the way has raised over $700,000 for children's charities. Anyone who knows Michael is aware what a very special person he is, both onstage and off. He is a one of a kind gentleman who earns your respect by the very nature of his being - not to mention by being one of the funniest comedy magicians of this generation. Full details about the 'Dry Heat Classic' can be found at http://www.dryheatclassic.com/ If you have a chance come along and join in the fun, you don't even need to be a golfer as tickets to some of the shows and events are open to the public. Well, I'm out of here; time to restart rehearsing my spiffy new Nielsen/Okito 'Chinese Sticks'. Give me a digital "Hi," at http://www.nicklewin.com -------------------------------------------- 7. Tony Brook in Conversation with Harry Maurer (Part 4) ------------------------------------------ Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA TB: Yes, back then it was a small fortune for a tux. However, I totally agree with you Harry. Stage clothes are important. This topic, as you and many of my Magical friends know, is a "hobby-horse" of mine. I keep beating the drum for a Magician to look like a Magician. But let me not get started on that !!!! I'll put my soap-box away..for now !! Tell me about the time one of the Rat Pack commented on your look .... HM: Ah! Joey Bishop you mean. When I worked with Joey at Bally's Park Place in Atlantic City, I would walk onstage and he would quip, "You look like you fell off a wedding cake!" But as I wore that tuxedo, stars in Atlantic City and Vegas would come up to me and say, "Hey, where did you get that tux?". TB: Of course, your Stage clothes are different now. .. HM: Yes, my stage outfits now are different. They are still classy and well made, but not your typical black tuxedos with a bowtie. They are a little more contemporary. TB: Your elegance goes back to a remark that was made to you at 18 in New York .. HM: Yes Tony , that's right. When I was 18, I was working at the New York Playboy Club where in a two year period of time I presented over 1300 shows! During that time, I would wear a tuxedo onstage, and offstage I would wear what I thought was a nice suit. The General Manager of the club eventually came up to me and said, "Harry, you look like a tourist!", and he gave me tips on where to shop, what to look for and how to dress well. I do a comedy act and I don't understand it when I work in comedy clubs why comedians feel that they have to dress "sloppy" to be funny, but that is the culture of comedy clubs. I think many of them would do better and go further if they looked better onstage. I'm not saying they should wear a tuxedo at a comedy club, but like Nevil Maskelyne taught in "The Performance of Magic" and Robert Houdin exemplified, I believe that you need to dress a "little better" than your audience. I unfortunately see the same thing in magic with magicians who style themselves after David Blaine and Chris Angel. I don't think David or Chris tried to forge a new magical dress code, I think their original concept was to be an ordinary person doing extraordinary things. To a degree, that works, but not onstage! TB: Absolutely, no argument from me on that. As I mentioned earlier, I don't want to get on my soapbox but I strongly feel that it is important for an audience to see us in the role of a Magician. Well, let's move on to your Corporate work. You do a lot of Corporate and Trade show work. Although, from time to time, you may use the same effects.the "audiences" are different. To be successful at both Stage, Cruise and Trade shows requires skills that are different.how do you make the adjustments ? HM: I think because all of the routines that I present developed from my personality, they are universal and I am limited only by the environment. Cruise Ships and stage shows allow me to do the most since I can be more theatrical and can create a mood with lighting and music. But as the environment changes, a performer starts getting more limited when they present corporate entertainment in a ballroom or banquet hall, so in those venues, the material has to be strong enough to hold its own without the benefit of perfect lighting and sound. You need to adjust your show to the venue -- I wouldn't try to do the Metamorphosis in a tiny room and I wouldn't swallow Razor Blades at a corporate dinner show - they are just not appropriate routines for the environment. Stage and cruise ships are similar theatrical environments, but Trade shows are a completely different story. They consist of very long days where your goal is to draw attention to the booth and to the product with a series of quick, fun, attention-getting shows. Shoot In Sydney, Australia ------------------------------------------ Message by Sean Taylor (Aust) Thursday 15th July 7.30pm $25 and all welcome www.taylorsmagicshop.com.au A couple of years back, we were treated to a night of simply superb sleight of hand from the one and only Shoot Ogawa. Well, Shoot is back and he will present his brand new lecture exclusively at Taylor's Magic Shop. Shoot's magic is inventive, visual and always goes the extra mile. His one hand matrix, Ninja Rings and remarkable coin handling were highlights last time. For this lecture, Shoot has promised a new style of magic which is more easy to master and more suited to the hobbyist. Shoot's new DVDs 'Shoot Force' and the superb 'Laws Of Attraction' have become instant classics and I've seen mentalists using the Attraction technique along with metal bending. Don't miss this opportunity to see one of Japan's greatest exports and one of the world's true sleight of hand masters. -------------------------------------------- 10. British Ring Convention News ------------------------------------------ Message by Bob Hayden (UK) A most popular event in the convention programme is the Jeffery Atkins memorial Lecture. This year the lecture is being delivered by Derek Lever who is taking for his theme 'The World of Magic of Jack Hughes'. To many of today's younger magicians Jack Hughes is just a name who manufactured magical props. To those in their more senior years Jack was much more than that. Yes he manufactured props to an exceptionally high standard but it was a standard he set himself never allowing any prop to leave his workshop unless he was completely satisfied with its quality. Probably more important Jack was a thorough gentleman always available to give a fledgling magician encouragement and practical advice from his own experience as a performer. So what was Jack's background and how did he become such an iconic legend? Initially being apprenticed to a high class Cabinet Maker made him a first class craftsman. His interest in magic didn't start until the family emigrated from Devon to Canada when he discovered the art and began to carry about his person a pocket trick or two which he would show on every possible occasion. His working life in Canada was short and he returned to marry the Devonshire girl he had left behind. Settling in Exeter two events occurred that turned his attention to how he might make a career in magic. The first was purchasing a trunk of conjuring apparatus in auction and the second obtaining a copy of Hoffman's 'Modern Magic' and later his 'More Magic' and 'Later Magic'. Inspired by these works he began making his own apparatus incorporating his own improvements and refinements. Now well equipped it was time to start performing as a professional magician. Early in his new career he was fortunate to meet Stanley Dixon who took a liking to the youngster and afforded him the benefit of his experience. His growing ability as a magician and his skill in constructing apparatus soon became known amongst the magicians of Devon. Soon London was calling Jack where he met Will Goldston and was soon busily engaged in making effects for this world famous dealer. But it was his inventive ability for devising new effects that made his services much sought after. How many of you know that a popular trick of the late 30's known as the 'Television Frame' distributed by Davenports and purchased by magicians throughout the world was the invention of a young man, Jack Hughes. The war years found Jack serving his country in the armed services but even then magic was not forgotten when in quite spells he found time to conceive effects. Demobilised in 1946 Jack found that several of his exclusive effects had been 'pirated' and placed on the magical market. To protect himself from further depredation he decided to mass produce his inventions. So the Unique Magic Company was formed and a factory opened. With the effects being available for all to purchase the entire venture was successful. By arrangement with Percy Abbott the Abbott Magic Co of America was permitted to place these products on the other side of the Atlantic. Jack the inventor continued to progress but Jack the craftsman was not satisfied. The mass produced items did not come up to his pre-war standards. Jealous of his reputation for quality Jack broke away from the Unique Magic Co to open up again in Colindale, North London. There are very few top flight professional magic acts in the world that have not had the benefit in some way or the other either directly or indirectly of benefiting from the brain of Jack Hughes. None was more so in the period immediately following the cessation of hostilities. Even today where there is a move by the current generation of magicians towards close-up, many Jack Hughes props are still in use today and can, when in the right hands, provide top class entertainment to the general public. It was in the early 1980's when Jack semi retired to Blackpool that he and Derek Lever embarked on a project of recording in print The Magic of Jack Hughes. It soon became clear that with the abundance of material available it would not be possible to publish it all in one volume. In all three volumes have been published by the Tarus Magic Supply and comprehensively covers the material which enabled Jack to earn a living for over 50 years. In the time allocated for the lecture it will not be possible for Derek to show and demonstrate his entire collection of Jack Hughes magic. It would probably take five hours! Some of the items Derek will be showing may not have been seen by today's younger magicians. It is a hoped that may be impressed by what they see. They might then realise there is something more to magic than a pack of cards. Not only will this be a fine stimulating lecture it will also be a fitting tribute to a gentleman who was one of the brightest lights in magic. An event that has been missing from the Convention programme for the past six years has been the Dealers Demonstration. With the trend of magicians over the past decade towards close-up magic, the majority of the Dealers felt that demonstrating their latest close-up miracles would not be clearly seen and appreciated in a large theatre. There have been requests from several members for the Demonstration to be reintroduced, so the organiser of the Dealers Exhibition Jim Boyd has, when a Dealer has applied for a stand, asked them if they would be willing to participate in a Demonstration. The response he has had has been positive and with the assistance of Bob Hamilton, his video camera and a big screen it is possible that the event will be back and will be to everyone's satisfaction. -------------------------------------------- 11. We ask that attendees RSVP to 503-493-8316 or msr@nwresources.com by Thursday noon, September 9th to help us plan tables, chairs and food for the event. This is for anyone interested in magic. There will be tables for anyone who wants to swap or sell personal magic paraphernalia (no dealers please), a competition for magicians performing an Andrus effect or something he might have done, a "coins in the hay" scramble for kids and a great assembly of people sharing and having fun. Several local magic organizations will provide hamburgers & hotdogs, sodas & water and we ask that those who join the gathering to bring a salad, fruit or dessert to feed at least 5 or 6 and we will share those potluck style. Please distribute this soon to any group or individual who might enjoy gathering as part of this event. No affiliation required. This invitation is going out by email and word-of mouth so your help is very important in reaching out to anyone you know who might enjoy the event. -------------------------------------------- 16.
