Charlotte Pendragon And Illusions For Sale? -------------------------------------------- Message by John R. Browne III (US) Message published in full August 5, 2010 To: Alan Watson From: Jack Browne I hope this finds you and Michele well. Jan and I enjoyed seeing you when you were in San Francisco last year. Happily the I.B.M.'s legal affairs have been in good shape for a number of years now. There is nothing for me to pass along to you in this regard. I write you now on my own, and not in my capacity as I.B.M. Legal Advisor. "CHIN-CHIN" (aka Gregory Chin) is a young, successful and very colorful (bright red hair) San Francisco stage show performer who brings a lot of energy and dedication to the Art of Magic. I became acquainted with Chin-Chin several years ago, when he needed information about the I.B.M.'s stage contests. I have followed his career in magic since that time. Chin-Chin's San Francisco Bay Area's performance venues are continually expanding. His unique brand of stage and illusion presentations is getting him better and better engagements. Still, being devoted full time to a magic career and with no "day job" to help pay the bills, Chin-Chin has to watch his pennies. Chin-Chin has wanted to perform John Gaughan's Origami Illusion since he was 12 years old. Through magician friend Jason Latimer, Chin-Chin learned that some months ago CHARLOTTE PENDRAGON put out the word that ORIGAMI was for sale. Chin-Chin contacted Charlotte, who agreed to sell him ORIGAMI for $5,000. Since February of this year, Chin-Chin has scraped enough money together to pay Charlotte a total of $4700. Eagerly anticipating shipment of ORIGAMI upon paying the final $300 to Charlotte, Chin-Chin contacted her recently to arrange for delivery. Shockingly, Chin-Chin was told by Charlotte that ORIGAMI is in Trinidad, and that there will be a storage charge of at least $10,000 to retrieve it from storage! Chin-Chin has now contacted me for help, as a friend in magic. Because I feel badly for Chin-Chin, I have offered to help him obtain ORIGAMI without payment of any fees for my legal services. I began my quest yesterday by calling John Gaughan, who built ORIGAMI, to ascertain performance rights to the illusion. John confirmed that the original purchasers, THE PENDRAGONS, bought the performance rights along with the illusion, and that such rights pass to subsequent purchasers. I then called JONATHAN PENDRAGON, who was in Boise, Idaho, where he is presently performing. Jonathan was nice enough to talk with me. Although Jonathan is not in personal contact with Charlotte because of a court order, Jonathan knows from speaking with Chin-Chin that Charlotte "sold" ORIGAMI to Chin-Chin without disclosing that the illusion was in Trinidad and subject to a costly storage lien. Jonathan then told me that Chip Romero of Lake Charles, Louisiana, has also recently "purchased" illusions from Charlotte, which are also in Trinidad and are under the same storage conditions as ORIGAMI. Mr. Romero confirmed today on the phone that he sent Charlotte an $11,000 check last October for Fire Cage and Sword Suspension, and that Charlotte promised him she would drop these illusions off in Lake Charles some months ago on her way to perform at a convention in Daytona Beach, Florida, not disclosing that such illusions are also in Trinidad, along with ORIGAMI. Mr. Romero told me he has retained an attorney. Jonathan clarified that he was not aware of Charlotte's actions until months after the fact, and that he played no part in them. He said he was never informed that she was selling their illusions and that she had left them in Trinidad. Jonathan said that Charlotte had handled the logistics of their shows, that in June of 2009 she told him she had arranged to bring their props back, and that he didn't learn until May of 2010 that she had not done so. Jonathan told me he has not received one penny from Charlotte's illusion sales, which include those he invented such as Clearly Impossible, as well as the illusions Charlotte sold to Chip Romero; i.e., Fire Cage and the unique Sword (broom) Suspension harness which Jonathan said he designed and helped build. Nevertheless, Jonathan says that he will do all he can to try and see that Chin-Chin and Chip Romero get the illusions they have paid for. Although my investigation and any action I may take thereon on behalf of Chin-Chin is far from finished, I thought it would be appropriate to "put the word out" to the magic community about what I have learned so far, and also for another reason: Jonathan Pendragon is very passionate about maintaining his rights to a deceptive "doll house" (little theatre) illusion designed by Jim Steinmeyer and built by John Gaughan. So I wanted to put the word out to fellow magi that neither Charlotte Pendragon nor anyone else has rights to "sell" this illusion. Your readers should please feel free to send any information they may have about these matters to me at johnrbrowne@sbcglobal.net. Many thanks. -------------------------------------------- 3. Watching Ancient Magic Films Online -------------------------------------------- Message by Paul Daniels (UK) I have just spent a happy couple of hours watching ancient films of various magicians and speciality acts. All I did was to go www.britishpathe.com and register. Then in the search box I typed words associated with magic, magicians, names of performers and so on. Most of the films have dates and information attached. Great. -------------------------------------------- 4. "Directions" In Magic Magazine -------------------------------------------- Message by Joanie Spina Looking for performances for the column "Directions" in Magic Magazine. In the article, several routines will be assessed to discuss areas that can be improved upon, as well as pointing out aspects that work well. It is not meant to be a review, but a learning tool. You can relate what you read in the article to our own act. There is plenty of opportunity to pull quotes from Magic Magazine article for your promotional material. The articles are never mean-spirited, but always meant to be constructive and helpful. If you would like to submit your video for the column please send it to Joanie Spina, Box 71497 Las Vegas NV 89170 Please send unedited routines, not a promo or highlights tape. Thanks, Joanie -------------------------------------------- 5. Dale Salwak Seeks Information On Neil Foster's Artwork -------------------------------------------- Message by Dale Salwak (US) For a future article about the creative connections between art and magic, Dale Salwak would be interested in hearing from anyone who knows of the location of paintings, sketches and other examples of Neil Foster's work from the time he was a student at the Chicago Art Institute; the summers he spent in Lafayette, Indiana, painting scenery for musical productions; and through his years as Vice President of Abbott's Magic Mfg. Co. until his passing in 1988. He is particularly interested in hearing from Neil's many friends across the country whose homes hold one or more of Neil's paintings. Dale may be reached at P.O. Box 8054, La Verne, CA 91750 or by e-mail: dsalwak@citruscollege.edu. -------------------------------------------- 6. More Remarkable Magic - Nick Lewin #50 -------------------------------------------- Message from Nick Lewin (US) Michael Finney, a one in a million magician. Get ready New Zealand! If you haven't experienced it before, be prepared for the hurricane of laughter and great magic that is Michael Finney. During his forthcoming visit to New Zealand, if you've never seen him perform, you owe it to yourself to see Michael work. If you have seen him perform then I know nothing will prevent you from seeing him again. As regular readers of my columns will know, I am a huge fan of Michael and his unique style of Comedy Magic. He is easily funny enough to be a top stand-up comedian and performs magic that is so smooth and strong that even if he didn't say a word his act would take him to the top of the list in the magic world. Fortunately he has chosen to walk the tightrope that is Comedy Magic and combines them as smoothly as any performer I have ever seen. I have known Michael for over 25 years now and he was the pivotal reason that I had the courage to break away from the magic world and start my 11-year excursion into comedy club territory. His generous advice and encouragement was and still is much appreciated. Last week I had a chance to see the other side of Michael, it was just as impressive. I attended and performed at the 14th Annual 'Michael Finney's Dry Heat Classic,' the golf tournament is held in Phoenix, Arizona and raised nearly one million dollars for children's charities. It has great golfing, fantastic food, true camaraderie and a couple of the best comedy and variety shows you will ever see. Now I could spend an entire column just reporting on the magicians who graced the stage at the Talking Stick Resort, however I am going to save that for another column. This one is about Michael and his lovely wife Lori who have very obviously poured their hearts and souls (not to mention endless hours) into creating an event that hits the bull's-eye in every way. The Michael Finney Foundation created and runs the event. After all the events that Michael has performed at over the years; he must have been taking notes! With a deceptively casual manner, Michael avoided the mistakes that so often spoil gatherings like this. The stage and sound system were of the very highest quality. There was live music exactly where and when it was needed and a hospitality suite that felt like a private club. One of the first things you notice at the 'Dry Heat' was the respect and pride that the local community feels about Michael. He doesn't just live in Phoenix, but rather he is a very active and vital element in the city. Everyone is aware of his commitment to the charities he supports, but there is never a sense of 'Look What I'm Doing' that so often accompanies charity events. His quiet sincerity speaks volumes without a word needing to be said. Quietly in the background was Michael's wife Lori Soohoo. Watching them work the front and back roles interchangeably was of particular interest to Susan and I. We have worked like this for years and enjoyed watching their intuitive skills combine as they quietly got things done, with a minimum of fuss or flurry. Magicians often have their wives as onstage partners, believe me, this kind of behind the scenes partnership is just as difficult as 'box jumping' and all the more exacting as it goes on in the background and underneath the surface of their relationship. The strong sense of family and patriotism that Michael feels was passed on to the audience and a very palpable addition to the mood of the event. This was an event that not only benefited a great cause but also made it fun to do so. During the event a one minute video was shown featuring the children who would benefit from the cash raised; and how. It brought a tear to many of the eyes around me, including myself. Just one minute, not a downer or a guilt maker, just a very simple reminder of how the fun that we were having was able to benefit those less fortunate than ourselves. Bravo, Michael, I always knew that you were in the very top league as an entertainer, but for three days I got to take a peep behind the colorfully dressed performer with the larger than life persona and see the big-hearted gentleman, who would probably laugh it off if I called him the humanitarian that he most certainly is. It was my pleasure and delight to join you in the Dry Heat of Arizona and be a part of the proceedings. Jack of All Trades - #174 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com poofersgrl@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com A good friend of mine posted an interesting question the other day. It sparked much debate and discussion and worthy of talking about it here so that we may all learn or gain something from it. The question went like this: "So why is it that people hire someone to perform magic who is a magician, balloon artist, face painter, clown, fire eater, and DJ (AKA average at best jack or all trades and expert at none)?" In the eyes of the consumer, they want a low price. I do not personally feel the consumer is always looking for a jack of all trades. In most cases they are looking for a particular need and a low price for that need. It just so happens they sometimes find this low price "need" with a person who claims to do everything. Now why is the low price an issue these days? Well that is simple. It is this perception of lay people that all magicians are the same. They are not educated enough (most any ways) to understand that magicians are different and you can get what you pay for. They do not realize that (like consumer brands) each of us are different and provide a different level of experience and solutions. This perception exists a lot because of 1) a lot of bad magicians out there and 2) the simple fact that folks have never hired a magician before and have no experience doing it. As wrong as this perception is, it exists and it is up to us as performers to change that perception. Now in the consumer world, folks realize there is a difference in what we call "brands". They understand that a certain make and model of car may be better "in their mind" than another. This is based on perception built up by effective brand identity and brand marketing. In magic, this does not happen much unless someone understands there is a reason why we call it "Show Business". It is up to us to see a need or a problem that the consumer has and to solve that problem with a solution. The more solutions we can answer that directly fixes a need for the client, the more our value increases. The perception of you starts to change and they see that you are vastly different than anyone else. Any consumer will be willing to pay top dollar if they feel they are getting a solution that is by far better than anything else. They will pay top dollar for value. They will also pay top dollar if they know that the entertainer is meeting and solving more direct needs that they have. Why does anyone buy anything? In most cases it is because you have a problem you are trying to find a solution for. It also goes beyond producing a good show. Any good magician will realize that part of solutions providing is the ability to give the client more than what they expect by solving needs they may not even be aware of in the first place. The more problems you can solve for any client, the more value you have to them. It is once again about YOU making sure your prospects know you are different than magician A, B and C. If the consumer thinks we are all the same, it is up to YOU to change that perception through effective marketing and branding of yourself. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. Tony Brook In Conversation With Doc Haliday (Part 3) ------------------------------------------ Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA DH: Although, I've worked many venues both large and small, I've had the most fun working children's birthday parties. As I mentioned earlier, I'm a pretty good caricature artist . I don't mean to brag but because I had skills in both areas I offered Mom entertainment for all the guests and then I would draw a very nice picture of the birthday child, so Mom got to keep something special to hang on her wall. No other magician in the Dallas/Fort Worth area could offer a package like that. It got me a lot of work, and of course, time permitting I would draw other family members or guests (for an additional fee, you understand). I do a pretty fine job of drawing children, making them all look like little angels, so the interest in drawing other than the birthday child was usually great. I figured if I had both skills I should make use of them. I have to tell you that as much as I enjoy performing at different venues, I'm happier doing close up and parlor magic for children than anything else I may have done. I have no grandchildren, so I get to play someone else's grandkids for just a little while. TB: That's interesting and what's more you provide a unique Birthday package. You obviously are very successful at it and have been working steadily for many years is there a formula? DH: Well, I don't really know if there is a formula, I guess, if there is one, it is loving what I do. I've had no formal training in stagecraft or how to develop a personae, I just do what feels right to me. I want to be me when I'm in front of an audience, I want to be natural, but I try very hard to be entertaining. TB: And you sure are entertaining .what is your primary goal as a Magical Entertainer? DH: I don't consciously have a goal but here's how I see it. Even though it might be my 2302nd show, it is their first show with me. and so, after people see me perform, I want them to go away with a good feeling, maybe a smile on their face. I want them to know that they and I have all had a good time, that we've shared something special. When I leave a child's party, I want them to feel like I'm their favorite uncle who's leaving after a too brief visit. TB: That must be a very rewarding feeling. Speaking of children's birthday parties, you told us about the caricatures, but I'm curious about one thing .do you perform as Doc Holiday or do you create another persona? DH: I do perform using the name of Doc Haliday almost exclusively but sometimes I am more into the character than at other times. When I'm in the western costume I am more broad in my gestures and I use western slang and euphemisms as I'm talking with my audience. You have to do that, it comes with the territory. You can't wear a Tom Mix-style, ten-gallon Stetson and speak in an off-hand manner. It's always, "Howdy, folks" when you meet 'em and sage cowboy advice to "Never squat with your spurs on", as you leave 'em. As a matter of fact, I use the same style of message on my answering machine. End of Part 3 - (Hidden in this article are deliberate grammatical & spelling mistakes. This offer won't last long, get your copy now at www.johncalvertmagic.com -------------------------------------------- 12. British Ring Convention News -------------------------------------------- Message by Bob Hayden (UK) From Eddie Dawes come details of the speakers and the subjects they will be discussing at this year's History of Mystery session. For the 38th time the session has been arranged by Eddie and will be presented by him but moves to Friday afternoon after many years of occupying a Saturday afternoon slot. The varied and interesting programme will include Peter Lane recalling the famous Westminster Royal Aquarium which from 1876 to 1906 occupied the site where the Central Methodist Hall now stands. Although initially intended to be a Central London rival to the Crystal Palace at Sydenham, with up-market attractions plus an aquarium, it never achieved that ambition and eventually became a place of popular and risqué entertainment where magicians, jugglers, acrobats and aerialists were to be seen - but very few fish! Owen Clark (1877-1929) was a highly original magician and shadowgraphist who earlier in his career made such an impression that Maskelyne & Devant sent him out to the Antipodes in 1908 to head their Touring Company in Australia and New Zealand, and subsequently presented him with a medal to commemorate the tour. Over the years, Christopher Brinson has carried out diligent research on Clark, whose personality led to problems later in his career, and his biography of this enigmatic performer is currently in the press. Chris reports "I have made some exciting discoveries concerning Owen Clark. Some of the material is surprising, and some slightly controversial!" which, together with some of his remarkable inventions of the 1920s, will clearly make for a fascinating talk. Where would magicians be without their assistants? Assistants come in many guises, some visible others not, some highly competent others less so. Paul Freeman says "I want to pay tribute to those lovely magicians' assistants that never fail to enchant audiences whenever they appear" and presents the results of his researches in which he identifies and then focuses on "The Iconic Magicians' Assistant". The final presentation, "Hellis in Wonderland", which is the title of Will Houstoun's latest book, will be given by the author on Robert Hellis, the 19th-century magician and dealer who gave lessons to Professor Hoffmann and Dr Lynn. Will's interesting research stems from a notebook in Peter Lane's collection containing lessons written by Hellis and continued by an anonymous student, and leads to a study of Hellis's life and his magic. At the Magic Collectors' Association Weekend in Chicago in May, Will became the first recipient of the Edwin A Dawes Bursary Award for Magic Scholarship, instituted by Magicana and the MCA, with a cheque for $2000 to assist him with his forthcoming doctoral research on the cultural history of Professor Hoffmann and his impact on conjuring literature in the Literature, Film and Theatre Department at the University of Essex. Eddie has once again arranged a thought provoking session to those anxious to learn more about the History of Mystery. An event, the Ali Bongo Micro Magic Marathon introduced in 2008 into the Convention programme is proving popular for both contestants and spectators alike. This year it is again being co-ordinated by Viv Davies (Mysteeny). The number of competitors that can take part is determined by the size of the room in which it is held. This year it is in the Floral hall of the Winter garden complex which will have the tables set out in cabaret style. If you are interested in taking part as a performer contact Viv immediately on 029 2079 2789 or by e.mail: mysteeny@btinternet.com Here is an opportunity of showing off your prowess as an entertaining close-up worker as the winner is decided by the people who have been entertained and you take the title of table magician of the year plus a bottle of champagne. Wednesday night is going to be extremely busy for Viv. Not only will he be overseeing that the M.M.M. runs smoothly he will be host to the cabaret that follows. Who will he be introducing? It is the terrific line-up of Charlie Frye & Co, Graham P Jolley and the comedy musical act of Pluck. All three of these acts have previously been profiled in Convention News but the name Viv Davies may be unfamiliar to you. He is of course well known in South Wales where he resides and many of you will have met Viv at previous British Ring Conventions as he has been a regular attendee with his wife Ros (family commitments permitting) since 1974. It was the present of a David Nixon Magic Box that kindled Viv's interest in magic. In the early days getting further information about magic was difficult to obtain, library books being one source. Making props described therein was a cost effective way of progressing his magical skills. As he got older his D.I.Y. skills improved and he found he was making all his props tables etc. By his late teens he was providing entertainment at Old Folk Homes and dayrooms in hospitals. Later by developing a magic cabaret act he was booked to perform at the likes of Church Dinners and W.I. functions. In the 80's he started entertaining at children's parties, so successfully that by the end of that decade he decided it was time to become a fulltime professional magician. Viv is involved in all brands of magic from mentalism, children's cabaret and close-up. As well as being a professional magician Viv also has a keen interest in his local theatre groups performing in musicals and Pantos, working backstage, giving technical support, building sets, making props and last Christmas making his debut as the director of a pantomime. Viv Davies is now willing to help in the running of the British Ring with the varied experiences he has gained over the years. -------------------------------------------- 13. "Ron Wilson - Castle Perk 2" -------------------------------------------- Message by Jon Racherbaumer (US) "Ron Wilson - Castle Perk 2" and Book Signing at the Magic Castle In response to many requests from Magic Castle members, Ron will be interviewed at his second "Castle Perk." There are so many tales about the early days at the Castle and his friends in magic that that were left untold, this should be very entertaining evening. He will also discuss his new book "Tales from the Uncanny Scot" followed by a book signing. Ron has written dozens of stories about many great magicians and celebrities of the past and present, including his long experience in the cruise industry. There are over 250 photographs in the book, many of which have never been seen before. In addition, the book contains a DVD, in which Nick Lewin chats with Ron about his experiences in magic and his performances, with videos of tricks from his stage act at the Magic Castle. Another section in the DVD shows Ron teaching R. Paul Wilson details of his award-winning card trick "The Highland Hop" and the intricacies of his second deal. "Ron Wilson - Castle Perk 2" at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 10 in the Magic Castle, in the Inner Circle. If you are unable to attend and would like to order a book please visit www.uncannyscot.com -------------------------------------------- 14. The Way Of The Future - Going Eco -------------------------------------------- Message by Paul Romhany (US) I would like to promote the way of the future for magic tutorials. After a few months discussion with several of the leading product manufacturers in magic, we are all moving toward a more eco-friendly type of production. This will also benefit the consumer because the cost of a DVD won't need to be included in the price of an effect. Simply put, tutorials will now be internet based. I am proud to say that my company Extreme Magic Makeover is one of the first to really take this on board - and our brand new close-up effect called, "Romhany's Linking Hearts" is our first effect with the online tutorial. Normally, a handmade product like this would cost a lot more because we would have to include a DVD with each unit; however we were able to keep this to a very reasonable price because we are using the internet. Inside each box will be a password that you can use to open up the tutorial online and watch it on your computer. There is also access to download the files if need be. To view the new eco website visit: http://www.extrememagicmakeover.com Here is our new close-up effect - a FOUR RING LINKING HEART ROUTINE. A Linking Ring Routine that offers more possibilities than any other close-up linking ring routine on the market. Paul Romhany has created one of the most commercial routines for magicians who perform close-up, walk-about or street magic. These rings are specially designed and crafted using high quality 5" metal, and plated three times to make them durable enough for the toughest working conditions. A Dove That Lived 25 -------------------------------------------- Message by Arthur & Avril Reed (South Africa) I have a Dove that was born in 1985 and that makes her 25 years old. Is there any record of other doves that have lived this long? I would love to know. Avril and I had hoped to move to Australia and see our family there, but she has finally been refused entry due to health reasons and has decided not to continue with the terrible Chemo treatment, but thank goodness my Grand-daughter has stepped in as my assistant for now until Avril is well enough. Yours sincerely, Arthur & Avril Reed www.arthurreed.co.za arthur@arthurreed.co.za -------------------------------------------- 19.
