The highlight for this week for me was attending one of the 'Shore is Magic' shows that was put on by the North Shore Junior Magicians Club here in Auckland. I found it inspiring to see these up and coming magicians perform at a professional level. Remember if you have any magic news drop me a line: AW@Alan-Watson.com -------------------------------------------- 2. Hank Moorehouse To Be Honored By S.A.M. -------------------------------------------- Message by George Schindler S A M Public Relations September. 20, 2010 - Producer John Apperson announced that the 2011 honoree at the annual Society of American Magicians' convention will be Hank Moorehouse. Hank is a Past National President of the S. A.M. (1981-1982) and is an Honorary and a Life Member. Moorehouse is best known for his sixteen years as Executive Show Producer having booked more than five hundred performers from the U.S. and abroad for S.A.M conventions. Hank's efforts have brought more than thirty-five overseas artists to the U.S. for the first time and improved the face of all magic conventions with his keen sense of magical talent. Moorehouse is recognized around the world and most recently was the Artistic Director for both the combined IBM-SAM Convention in 2008 and the 2009 FISM Championships in Beijing, China. He still finds time to act as a magic dealer and performer and is one of the best known emcees in the magic fraternity. The convention will be held July 13-16 2011 in Pittsburgh. See www.magicsam.com for more information. -------------------------------------------- 3. Luis de Matos Of Portugal - Illusionist Of The Decade -------------------------------------------- Message by Tony Hassini IMS Chairman/CEO The International Magicians Society's voting members and the Board of Directors voted Luis de Matos of Portugal as the Illusionist of The Decade. As 2010 is coming to an end, there will be four more decade awards. I will correspond with you and send you information on each one of them. -------------------------------------------- 4. Coming Up In The October 2010 M-U-M -------------------------------------------- Message by Michael Close, Editor The wild and crazy Stephen Bargatze graces the cover of the October issue of M-U-M. Many magicians know Stephen as one of the funniest magicians performing today, but few know his back story and the challenges he has had to overcome. PNP Bruce Kalver's article on Bargatze will entertain, enlighten, and inspire you. Also in the October M-U-M: You may know of Levent as a great comedy magician and author. He is also a great photographer, who specializes in capturing his subjects in candid moments. You'll find four pages of his stunning photographs taken at the Atlanta S.A.M. convention, Steve Marshall profiles Dan Garrett, whose Garnack comedy routine (with Gene Anderson) has been a mainstay of the 4F conventions. Dan offers a simple but effective handling of a four-card transposition with a kicker ending. Ian Kendall's Basic Training column covers the venerable Three Ball Trick, and includes a great suggestion that makes the trick practical for even very young sleight-of-hand enthusiasts. If you're looking for a Halloween-themed kids show routine, you'll find a fine one from National President Mark Weidhaas. The props are easy to find and easy to modify for the trick. If you want something that packs small but play big, look no further than this excellent routine. Tom Ewing writes about Prince Ali Raji (with a beautiful accompanying poster) in the Nielsen Gallery. Jolly Roger (Roger Blakiston) discusses the aspects of your performance that make you unique and offers suggestions on how establish your own magical personality. If you do mentalism, you'll love this month's Quick Look Book Nook, which features four routines from Burton Sperber's Miracles of My Friends II. Michael Perovich provides observations on "gambling men," including a history of importance texts. Bill Duncan and the staff of Informed Opinion give you the lowdown (nine pages worth) on the recent products released to the magic marketplace. Plus more great columns from Norman Beck, George Schindler, Nathan Kranzo, Larry Hass, Aldo Colombini, and Rod Danilewicz. All this and more is available to members of The Society of American Magicians in the October 2010 M-U-M. Membership information is available at www.magicsam.com. -------------------------------------------- 5. October MAGIC Magazine Preview -------------------------------------------- Message by Stan Allen - Editor Magic Magazine Each month, we email out the MAGIC Preview, offering a peek at what's coming in the next issue of MAGIC Magazine. If you would like to receive these, please send an email to: preview@MAGICmagazine.com. Meanwhile, here's a sample of what's in the October MAGIC Magazine Preview: The Road to Allakazam It was fifty years ago this month, on October 1, 1960, that the television series The Magic Land of Allakazam first aired over the CBS Television Network. The show was the fulfillment of a long-held dream for 31-year-old Mark Wilson and his wife Nani, the culmination of a five-year struggle to bring television magic to a coast-to-coast national viewing audience for the first time. You'd think a flood of emotion would have been forthcoming, coloring the event and making it stand out for the stars and creative participants. A few extra performance butterflies, perhaps. Maybe a few dozen sleepless nights. But you'd be wrong. For the young married couple from Texas, it was just another show. "The Road to The Magic Land of Allakazam," by Mark Nelson, is a story of talent, determination, patience, perseverance, and a bit of faith. The impact of this fifty-year-old television classic has reverberated throughout the magic world ever since. Allakazam Scrapbook An annotated photo gallery of snapshots from the early '60s, when Mark, Nani, Rebo, and their cohorts could be seen each week on television screens across the country. Francis Menotti: Challenging Assumptions The disparate pieces may seem random, unrelated, scattered, or surreal, yet somehow they all come together. This may sum up not only Francis Menotti's creative routines, but the magician himself. One Final Turn North for 31 Faces In a way, this year's 31 Faces North conference, August 19-22 in Toronto, was exactly what you'd expect of a magic convention: forty magicians met for four days of performing, lecturing, and seasoning. But it was entirely unlike every other magic convention. Spooking Your House So, you're the neighborhood magician. What better time than Halloween to make yourself stand out from the other candy-givers in town? Even on a small budget, adapting some magic principles can earn added attention from your local trick-or-treaters. Lance Burton Vanishes Saturday, September 4 marked the final performance of Lance Burton: Master Magician at the Monte Carlo Hotel in Las Vegas. After flying away in the Corvette, Lance returned to the stage to receive a long and enthusiastic standing ovation. A video camera recorded the event and projected it on the big side screens as he said, "Thank you. I will remember this day as long as I live." The camera then followed him backstage as he received hugs and kisses from both cast and crew. Finally, he and girlfriend Gabriella walked through the rear of the theater, out the exit, buckled themselves into his street Corvette, then drove away to a quiet night at home. Charismagic An announcement was made at this year's Comic-Con in San Diego introducing Charismagic, a new comic book from Aspen Comics. The main character is a Las Vegas magician, inspired by Lance Burton. In the comic, written by Vince Hernandez with art from Khary Randolph and Emilio Lopez, the Vegas entertainer is revealed to be a magician in the true sense of the word, possessing powerful supernatural abilities. Houdini: Art and Magic The Jewish Museum in New York City will feature Houdini: Art and Magic, a display that is billed as "the first major art museum exhibition to explore the life, career, and lasting influence of the legendary magician." Alongside historic pieces will be examples of contemporary art inspired by the life and legend of the world's most famous escapologist. -------------------------------------------- 6. Remarkable Magic # 0 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) The Art and Science of Writing Strong Comedy to Improve Your Performance Getting More and Bigger Laughs During Your Show. Cut out as many words as you possibly can until just the funny part is left. Be concise. Email me at nicklewin1@me.com P.S. This is probably the most practical and useful column I have written! -------------------------------------------- 7. Giving Out or Giving In - #181 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com Ever wonder why you have to work so hard sometimes to get folks to see you differently and to appreciate what you do? Ever see a person with their hands crossed over with this look of "fool me magic guy" on their face? It's as you have to prove something to them before you have even done anything. You never met this person yet they give off this defiant attitude. Why is it that we have to constantly work towards changing perceptions? Part of the reason maybe the sheer fact that most lay people view us magicians as being all the same. As sad as that may be, that is the case. Ask most people to be honest and describe a magician and you may get something like this: "oh a guy who dresses like a clown, looks weird, embarrasses people for laughs and pulls quarters out of people's ears. They are great for kid's birthday parties. Oh yeah, my uncle does magic." You may be laughing right now, but that is basically how lay people perceive us. They feel we are all one and the same. Now why do they have this perception? Well because in reality, there are a LOT of bad magicians out there who are 1) doing magic when they are not ready to do it and 2) those not willing to ever learn or to ever listen instead of stroking their own egos. Give anyone a deck of cards and teach them a card trick and the next week they are doing paid gigs. It is really a joke, but that is how things are. So how do we change this and why does this happen in the magical arts? Well a lot of it stems from magicians simply kissing each other's butts so much instead of being dead honest with each other. This may be harsh, but I have seen it time and again. How many times have you seen a really bad show or a bad act yet you saw magicians going up to them saying, "Oh wow that was great. Nice job. Way to go."? Why do we do this!? Do we do it to be kind or because they are friends or because we are trying to show respect? If you ask me, this is all a total joke. No wonder a person never learns or educates themselves if all they ever hear is people patting them on the back for doing a lousy job. If you are a friend and if you respect a fellow magician, then it should be a golden rule to be honest. Wow now there is a concept many fear. What is so wrong with honesty and why can't magicians be honest with each other? I am not saying you shred a person or scream at them about how bad they were. That is now my point. My point is a simple one. Be honest to yourself. Be honest to the fellow performer and be honest to the ART! If you see something that can be improved, then simply be honest with them and offer them constructive feedback that can help them. You can do this by showing respect to the performer but also not having to lie to them every chance you get. If the performer wants to elevate the art, they need to be able to take help when it is given to them. If you address the feedback in an honorable and friendly fashion, there is no reason why the performer can't listen to your suggestions. It makes them better and elevates the art. Now if you are on the receiving end, stop thinking everyone is out there to attack you. Stop putting up the fists every time someone offers you a suggestion. If you want to be a professional, you must first act like one. Stop talking for once and listen instead. Maybe what the person has to offer can be a tip that would take you years to learn on your own. Not everything everyone tells you is a piece of junk. If we are to elevate our art to a higher level, then we have GOT to start helping each other and listening to each other. We are a brotherhood and there is no reason at all why more of us can't offer assistance so we all grow and learn. So stop giving IN to lying to people just to make them feel good and start giving OUT feedback and help and friendly advice that can help someone else through your knowledge. We are magicians and we have this amazing ability to make people laugh and smile. I am not sure about you, but I would love for people to feel the passion for magic the way I feel the passion and to respect our art the way I do myself. We do this first by helping each other. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. -------------------------------------------- 8. Tony Brook In Conversation With Jay Scott Berry - Part 1 ------------------------------------------ Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA I met Jay several years ago in Europe at a Convention. I had heard of him and his FISM ranking but had never seen him perform. I stood at the back of a large crowd that was gathered at his Dealer's table and watched intently. He intrigued me so much that I decided not to go to a lecture I had planned on attending but stayed there for another 50 minutes to watch him perform what I thought was the closest thing to real Magic I had ever seen. I later found out that Mark Wilson had actually said those words in public about Jay. Incidentally, way back in 2000 in Dallas, Texas, I was having lunch with Scott Wells, Simon Lovell, Mark Wilson and Nani Darnell, and we got to discussing those who exhibited great skill. Guess whose name cropped up as the one Magician whose consummate skill was consistently flawless? Later that night at The Convention, where I had first met Jay, I watched in total amazement his flawless performance on stage. I became a huge fan and in my review I wrote, "A true visionary. A man who has gone beyond the boundaries. There are only a handful of magicians who are masters of the Art. This man is one of them. Do whatever you have to do to get to one of his lectures or one of his shows." "Phipps" AKA Heinz Philipp, longtime friend and Mentor to Siegfried & Roy shared a similar opinion. He said, "Over the past 70 years, I have seen almost every great magician in the world. I would have to rank Jay as one of the top 3." How do you top that? Well, Jay did! Because the great Channing Pollock summed him up in just four words, "Impeccable magic, absolutely wondrous!" Jay and I have been good friends ever since our first meeting all those years ago and I'm delighted to have shared a Stage with him on a few occasions. His travels as a Performer & Lecturer take him, quite literally, all over the world but we manage to keep in touch. I caught up with him recently. www.jayscottberry.com TB: Hello Jay, it is good to catch up with you and converse a while. I know you got started as an Entertainer at the tender age of 3 and we shall get to that in a while; but for now, I would like to jump start our conversation by talking about FISM 1982. You represented The Magic Castle at FISM. Share with us some of that time and your feelings.. JSB: Tony, it's great to catch up with you as well. OK, let's set set the way back machine for 30 years ago. After High School, I moved straight to Hollywood to pursue a career in the performing Arts. Within a year, I auditioned for the Junior group at the Magic Castle, and, at 19, was the youngest magician ever to perform evening shows there. Over the next few years, I would present over 500 shows in the Palace of Mystery. In 1980, the Board of Directors asked me to represent the Magic Castle at the 1982 FISM World Congress in Lausanne, Switzerland. The whole process was amazing, like preparing for the Olympics. I developed many new gimmicks, including the world's first hand held dry ice machine and numerous pyrotechnic effects. I created the Fog-to-Dove, the Gloves-to-Fog effect, the Flash from Hand (which was the original Light in a Thumb tip effect) and many others as part of a futuristic act, called "A Space in Time". Peter Pit, who spearheaded the drive to get me to FISM was very supportive, as were many other Castle magicians. The event itself was fantastic. I met many people who would become lifelong friends and colleagues. This was, of course, the year that Lance Burton took the top prize. This decision was somewhat controversial among many of the FISM attendees. In fact, Christian Fechner caught me after the medal ceremony and stated very emphatically that he and many others considered me the Grand Prix winner. Not that there was any rivalry between Lance and I, mind you. We had met a few years earlier and had become friends. However, as it turned out, it was upon this very controversy that I was able to build a successful career in Europe and then throughout the world. TB: Well, as you know, I often visit Vegas. You and I have a lot of mutual friends there and, yes, over the years many of them have always said that you are a Grand Prix Champion. I guess that is because we admire your talent not only as an Entertainer but also as a skilled Technician and highly Creative Thinker. Your Technical skill requires great practice and rehearsal and many of your moves are uniquely yours. How do you develop these? JSB: Thank you Tony. And thanks also all our mutual friends. I appreciate that. This all began, as you said, at the age of three. I grew up Reno, Nevada in the shadows of the Sierra Mountains amidst the multitude of Casinos there. It started with tap dance and singing at the age of 3. When I was 4, I began performing in school plays and musicals. My interest in magic was sparked when I was 5 years old with a small magic kit. At age 7, I was cast by the local theater group to perform in the stage classic, "The Seven Year Itch". As far as the "method to my madness" is concerned, well, I've actually fine-tuned that over many years of trial and error as well as simply maturing as a performing Artist. The main method that I use I call "Reverse Illusioneering" To begin, I simply imagine the effect as a perfect illusion; that is, not worrying about method at all. I hold this as the ideal by which I will then create the final effect. Working backwards, I then work out the methods to create that illusion. This may take days or years, but I always continue to measure the end result with the ideal that was set forth from the outset of the process. End of Part 1 (Hidden in this article are deliberate grammatical & spelling mistakes. After much hard work, my proofreader & I have included these to please those who enjoy finding them.) Magician Bob Elliott Tribute Website Updated -------------------------------------------- Message by M Johns September 19, 2010. A special website to honor Magician Bob Elliott has been updated with photos and news about his recent activities around San Diego. Visit http://www.MagicianBobElliott.com. The website was designed through volunteer efforts and a community grant from the Celebrity Magic Shop. Although he faces health difficulties, Bob is still involved in the local magic scene, along with his wife Happy. In 2007 he received special recognition from the community with contributions by everyone from Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to Magicians David Copperfield and Criss Angel. Bob and Happy live in Oceanside, California, and both enjoy magic fun whenever possible. They've done a lot to stimulate the current magic renaissance going on in San Diego County. You can find Bob and Happy at the monthly meetings of the International Brotherhood of Magicians Ring 76 in San Diego. The club meets at Jack's Magic Place on the second Mondays of the month. They also attend meetings of the Magic Guild of Southern California in Vista on the first Thursdays of the month at Coco's restaurant. On Thursdays, Bob visits the local Hooter's Restaurant from 12:30 - 2:00 p.m. with his magic friend Dr. Jeff Pearson. Lots of local magicians have started joining in the fun too.
