Joe Labero At Jupiters -------------------------------------------- Message by Sean Taylor (Aust)   Swedish Illusionist and all round magic superstar Joe Labero is back in Australia. Labero has a 6 month contract at Jupiters on the Gold Coast. This follows 2 previous Gold Coast shows and a memorable season down here at Harbourside some years ago.   The show starts on Nov 16th and tickets are pretty reasonable for something of this scale. Launch clip here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-hKlyb_0oQ   -------------------------------------------- 3. Magic Exhibitions -------------------------------------------- Message by Julie Eng (Canada)   Since Magicana launched the Ross Bertram Exhibition (http://www.magicana.com/rossbertram) we have revisited two of our original 2005 exhibitions featuring Bert Douglas and Msgr. Vincent Foy.   The first is Msgr Vincent Foy (who used the pen name, Dr. George E. Causabon) of Postcards of Magicians. Come and visit this 300-card collection.  http://www.magicana.com/postcards Do you recognize anyone? There are some unidentified cards; maybe you can be the one who names them?!   The other is Bert Douglas: A Family Remembers exhibition: http://www.magicana.com/bertdouglas   Can you add to the bibliography of Bert Douglas material? Do you have any Bert Douglas images or stories you would like to add? Finally, if you are in the New York area now until March 27, 2010, you may want to visit the Jewish Museum to see the major exhibition: Houdini: Art & Magic. Visit our blog for details. http://sharingwonder.wordpress.com -------------------------------------------- 4. Researching Various 20th Century Magicians -------------------------------------------- Message by Michael Perovich (US)   I live in southern California and have a life-long interest in magic and its history.   I am in the process of researching various 20th Century magicians and one that I am particularly interested in is Claude Goldin. He appeared in the United States in the finest vaudeville houses in the early 1900's. It is my understanding that he was from Australia and I assume he would have played in New Zealand as well. I'm wondering if you might know anyone who would have any knowledge of him and could provide me with information about him? I have a general understanding of his act but would greatly appreciate any details about Mr. Goldin that anyone could provide me.   zambolini@earthlink.net    -------------------------------------------- 5. IBM Convention Dallas 2011 -------------------------------------------- June 28th - July 2nd 2011   It's Halloween and we have a ghost story for you…   The great Harry Houdini, as you may know, died on Halloween 84 years ago. But, prior to his death he was one of the first performers ever to grace the stage of Dallas’ Majestic Theatre.   The Majestic Theatre is where the 2011 International Brotherhood of Magician's Convention Gala Shows will take place adding to the rich and colorful history of this venue. In addition to hosting Vaudevillian stars of yesteryear like Mae West and Bob Hope, the Majestic stage has been home to some of the great Legends in Magic. The spectacular shows of Thurston, Blackstone, and the aforementioned Houdini have all crossed the boards of this amazing stage.   The Theatre was built in 1920 and served as the setting for the 1974 Brian DePalma motion picture Phantom of the Paradise. In fact, The Majestic has its very own phantom. Karl Hoblitzelle founded the Interstate Amusement Company and built theaters throughout the Southwest -- the gem of which turned out to be The Majestic. It is reported that Karl still haunts the premises.   Karl has been known to make backdrops move, cause phones to light up, and create mysterious odors. In several instances, he has been known to cause a single light bulb in the balcony to suddenly illuminate although it is connected to one circuit along with many other bulbs. Engineers say it is simply impossible for one bulb to be individually controlled; yet it happens. Perhaps Karl learned something from Blackstone, Sr. .    Register for the Dallas 2011 Convention to see the beautiful Majestic Theatre, the great shows on its stage, and perhaps Karl will take that seat next to you.    Your chance to meet our friend Karl up close and personal is at hand. . . Discount registration ends December 31! --> https://www.magician.org/portal/ibmconvention_signup    Follow us on http://www.facebook.com/IBMConvention and http://twitter.com/IBMConvention for the latest news and information on The Convention!   -------------------------------------------- 6. Update On Terry Seabrooke  -------------------------------------------- Message by John Star   I have just spoken to Terry's wife Hilda. Terry is being moved into a home care today (Monday).   The hospital needs his bed and unfortunately Terry has refused any physiotherapy to get walking again and so they had to have him moved.    Terry is one of the most obstinate people I have met and although he is one of my best mates I could kick his backside!!! At least he can be easily visited now by his friends in Bushey. Hilda is at her wits end with his refusal of help to recover his walking ability. I feel very sorry for her, unfortunately I now live in Texas which makes this situation very frustrating for me.   -------------------------------------------- 7. Through The Eyes Of A Child - #186 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com   As a children's performer, how often do we get lost in the business of what we do? How many times do we worry about the hyper kid or the parent who doesn't care? How many times do we each call in a show simply because we are worried about the trip home or the bills that have to be paid?   If we are honest with each other, the answer is probably that it does happen. Maybe not all the time, but we are only human. We fall into these "traps" regardless of what we do.   We forget what it means to be a children's entertainer. We forget the joy that we felt as a child watching magic happen in front of us. We forget the amazed feelings we had seeing something appear from nowhere. We lose track of the amount of times we tried to make the magic happen ourselves yet had no real clue how to do it.   I recently had a rude awakening at a gig that brought all of this back to my mind again. I was doing strolling magic and this little 4 year old boy was crying. I may never know why, but he was not having a good time at all.   I started doing some ball manipulations to the music the DJ was playing. I was not paying much attention but out of the corner of my eye I see the child inch closer and the tears start to dry up. I started making the ball appear under my hat and a smile formed on this kid's face.   For 5 minutes this child watched me as if magic to him was something TRULY special. He stopped crying and was transfixed into everything he was seeing me do. His laughter made me laugh. His smile made me smile. His mother could not believe just how engulfed her son was in what I was doing.   Now I do not share this here as an ego thing. Instead I share it because for those 5 minutes I saw magic through the eyes of a child. I saw magic the way I remember seeing it so many years ago. I remembered what it was like to just totally believe in magic and to just allow oneself to be 'Entertained". No more and no less...to be entertained and not only fooled.   Through this child's own eyes, I got to feel like a kid again. But most of all, I got to remember the POWER each children's magician has inside of us. We have this ability we often take for granted.   We have the ability to make a child smile and laugh and forget about things even for just a few moments. We are often times the very first live magician that child may have ever seen. It is our duty and our JOB to never allow ourselves to give anything less than 100% effort every time out.   We must remind ourselves to see magic through the eyes of a child. We must remind ourselves of the joy magic can bring to a young one and how we can shape how that child views magicians from that day forward.   I may never know what will become of that child I saw that day. However, I do know that through his eyes, I saw magic again the way I first felt when I was his age. I remembered what being a children's performer is all about.   As much as his mother thanked me, I should be thanking him for allowing me to realize just how wonderful it is to do what we do. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. Tony Brook In Conversation With Lupe Nielsen - (Part 1)  ------------------------------------------  Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA   Anyone who meets Lupe immediately feels a sense of enchantment. She is one of those rare kind of people who has been gifted with a wonderful instantly likeable quality. She puts that to good use when performing her unique kind of magic. The most perfect mis-direction is her grace and charm. Little wonder that she is considered to be one of the leading Magicennes of our time.   I was fortunate to meet her on several occasions and more recently spent a wonderful time with her, her husband Norm and their very magical dog Misty at their home in a Las Vegas suburb. I am looking forward to visiting with them once again later this year.   If you are at a Convention in the near future and she and Norm are there make a point of going up to them and introduce yourself. I promise you right here and now, publicly and in writing, that it will be a delightful and very magical experience.   www.nnmagic.com    TB: Hello Lupe. Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to converse. You tend to keep yourself very much under the radar and in many ways, unlike most Magic folk who seek publicity you tend to keep away from the spotlight.   LN: Hi there Tony. It is I who has to thank you for the interview. Although I do enjoy magic in general, I am a “backstage” person at heart. I like all the perks of being in the magic business without having to be in the spotlight all the time. In this world of My Space, Twitter, FaceBook, I am still one of the few people left that does like to enjoy a sense of privacy. At this time I am quite content with running Nielsen Magic, which keeps Norm and I fairly busy on a full time basis.   TB: Absolutely. I understand what you mean. Of course, Norm is a true living legend and as you know, I was honored to feature him earlier this year in my In Conversation series. Thanks to my good pal Steve Dacri, it is on : http://www.vegasinsidetips.com/TONYBROOK.html . We shall talk about you both a bit later but I’m keen to know a bit more about your early days….    LN: I was born in Panama City, Panama in 1966. A friend of the family, who was not a magician, showed me my first magic trick when I was four. This was the trick where you show the upright portrait of Washington on a dollar bill. You then fold the bill, and when you open it, the portrait is upside down. I was very analytical as a child and that puzzle fascinated me. I liked magic so much that the first book I pulled out of the library when I was in first grade was a magic book for children. And that is how things started...    TB: What a wonderful start. Many of our fellow performers can relate to that feeling. It is indeed an inexplicable thrill to look through the pages of our first magic book. I know about the cliché of being hooked on Magic but I agree there is really no other better way to describe the passion that we feel for our Art. So when did you start performing?    LN: Like most people that start magic as kids, the first person we drive crazy are the people in our family. My mother must have picked cards hundreds of times. My first props were quite crude. I made a Square Circle out of cardboard.    The Square container was a box with a window in it. The external tube was a Quaker Oat Meal container, and the internal secret load chamber was a smaller diameter cardboard tube. Everything was painted with enamel paints, which I would pick up at a nearby hardware store. When I was nine, I had the gumption of doing a show for the neighborhood kids, at my next door neighbor’s apartment. At the end of the show the mother gave me a $5 dollar bill (probably because I kept the kids entertained and out of her hair for an hour or so). Wow, I figured, I can get money for the stuff I do.    After a couple of years, when I was twelve, I used to watch a live children’s show on television. I said to myself, I bet I can be on television. The following week I took the bus to the television station and asked the secretary that I wanted to see the producer of the show. She smiled and told me that he went out for lunch. After getting the name of the restaurant from her, I just walked in and as he was having lunch asked him if I could be on his show. He asked, “What do you do?” I said, “Magic”. I suppose he figured he had nothing to lose, so he said, “Sure, come in next Saturday.”   After that show, my phone would not stop ringing. By the time I was in my teens I had many shows under my belt and was doing five shows each weekend.   End of Part 1   (Hidden in this article are deliberate grammatical & spelling mistakes. Derren Brown At J-Day! -------------------------------------------- Message by Mandy Davis MIMC - Diva of Deception Chairman YMC/Editor 'Secrets' http://www.youngmagiciansclub.co.uk   The Magic Circle's Young Magicians Club had a brilliant one-day convention on Sunday with a top International lecturer as well as a long-awaited dream for many of those who attended.   Francis Menotti opened the day with a shortened version of his lecture, his talk on creativity greatly inspiring the audience. There were the finals of two competitions during the day, one for stage and one for close up, and a gala show to finish - featuring Alan Hudson, Oliver Tabor, Amanda Farrell and Francis Menotti.   The Home Counties Stage award went to Nick Lee, with second and third going to James Wilson and Joe Strickland - all three presented truly original act. Nick also won the Kaymar Komedy Kup and Joe won the coveted Peter McCahon Originality trophy, donated by past YMC Chairman Roy Marsh.   The Mark Leveridge Close Up Trophy went to Oliver Ward with Jack Taperell in second place and Daniel Shears in third.   The highlight for many was 'An Audience with.... Derren Brown'. The TV and theatre star of mind reading and mentalism gave his time freely. He opened with a fifteen minute talk and urged those present to copy others until they started to develop their own material! He told them that they had such opportunities as juniors, ones he'd never been able to find and that they should value those. Then BBC broadcaster and writer, Brian Sibley, interviewed Derren on all sorts of topics before we were treated to a twenty minute piece of unseen footage from Derren's last show. Everyone was enthralled by his presentation of the Spirit Cabinet using spectators both inside and outside the curtained area.   Once the 'official time' of his visit was over Derren surprised everyone by announcing he would sign autographs in the downstairs club room - and did so for another hour and a quarter as the line of excited people stretched from the back of the room and up the spiral staircase to the first floor of the building. Derren had a kind word for everyone and patiently wrote personal inscriptions in each programme or copy of his new book offered to him for signature.   And every member of the Young Magicians Club went home later that evening full of the experience of a wonderful and magical day! -------------------------------------------- 11. Update On Abb Dickson ------------------------------------------ Message by Gary E. Bartlett   Just wanted to give you a status report.   Abb came home from the hospital the other night. He is now home and sorta very short with his answers.   He stares a lot into space lately. He is not quite bed ridden, but not up and walking like he was.   He knows whats going on and switches subjects very quick. Occasional cracking a joke or two New Cell Phone: 404 368 7480 Home: 678 489 6825.   He will answer either phone if he is awake.   Also three days a week he is picked up for dialysis.    The old Abb we all knew is gone. The medical conditions have taken a toll on him. After this past stroke It's all a new game, but still has the will to live.   He talked to me about Burt Dubrow from the Howdy Doody show. He said that he was his first agent. Abb went on to say he is down to 213 lbs and cracked a joke saying he lost a whole Me.   Also said he had someone visit him name John Wayne. He said they thought he was nuts, but his name was John Wayne.   For those of you who may call. I want to know that his voice is different and very direct with two or three words answers.   Attn: Abb  C/o Pope Dickson & Son Funeral Home 168 N. Very Unfair Report On The Eastbourne Convention  ------------------------------------------ Message by Terry Herbert (UK) I have been away for a few days and have just been able to read the above very unfair report on the Eastbourne Convention and unlike your correspondent, I was there. Although I appreciate that one man's meat is another man's poison, to say that the convention was very poor is a travesty of the truth. There were some great acts and lectures and featured acts from the U.S.A Canada, Holland, France, Germany as well as some of our top magicians from the U.K. Two names spring to mind straight away are Rich Bloch who did a superb job as M.C of the Gala as well as giving an excellent lecture with very commercial material and Charlie Frye (the juggler whom your correspondent could not even name) who was fantastic and worth the price of the whole convention.   As for the age group of the registrants I had to smile because to me one of the stars of the convention was a little girl called Morgan who proved to be a sensation, who was very funny and had self-assurance well beyond her years.   At any convention there are high and lows and you cannot please all the people all the time but I can assure you highs far outweighed the lows.   -------------------------------------------- 13.
