The Loss Of A Great Friend Maurice Pierre -------------------------------------------- Message by John Calvert (US)   The loss of Maurice Pierre is tremendous to the magic fraternity. I have lost a great friend and so have the entire brotherhood of magicians. May God bless Denise and give her strength to carry on in this time of sorrow. May we all say a prayer for her complete recovery of good health.   Early in the 1970s, Tammy and I attended the Convention in Lyon, France., organized and directed by Maurice Pierre. He was a master of getting things done right with great ease. During that time we became great friends and had the privilege of visiting his home in Paris. He was such a wonderful host that we never thought of being in a foreign country. We only regret that we never had the opportunity to entertaining him in our home here in the States.   The Magic Manor is our home in Bowling Green, Kentucky and the welcome mat is always at the front door for visiting magicians. Our home phone number is 270.796.9067   -------------------------------------------- 3. The Most Powerful Trick I Have Ever Performed -------------------------------------------- Message by Mark Wilson (US)   Dear Friends in New Zealand and around the World,   Since I have devoted my entire life to the art of magic, I thought you might be interested in learning about The Most Powerful Trick I Have Ever Performed. The lovely Nani Darnell and I are probably best known for that first network television magic series, The Magic Land of Allakazam, which debuted on October 1, 1950, on the CBS network here in the USA.   We are now celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. And also known for the Mark Wilson Complete Course in Magic.. (Now published in six languages ... French, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Chinese and English, with a circulation of about 850,000 copies). Of course there is a lot more, but you may have wondered what is the most powerful trick I have ever performed?  That trick is Magic Bingo!   Let me tell you how Magic Bingo came about and why it is the most powerful. In 1969 and we were producing the Frito-Lay national sales meeting, which would be held in the Renaissance Hotel in Dallas, Texas. We had incorporated all of the usual things, Frito-Lay marketing points magically illustrated, Frito executives vanishing and appearing, as they often did in our shows. But I wanted an additional powerful effect. Going to sleep that night, I realized if we played a game of bingo where everybody won at the same time, now that could be powerful. The question was, would it work?   The three day Frito meeting was held two weeks later. On the last day of that event, the 500 audience members were told, "as you entered today, you were given bingo cards which have the word Frito across the top, not bingo. As in any bingo game, when you get five numbers in a row, do not say the word 'bingo', say 'Frito' and say it loudly, so I will know that you are the winner".   As the game progressed, I could see many in the audience were getting nervous as they checked off different numbers on different bingo cards. I made another announcement, "Remember to say Frito not bingo. In case of a tie, the first one I hear will be the winner, so you better say it loudly". I knew that when the next number was called they would all win.   And then it happened. WOW! Everyone in the room won at the same time, and they all yelled that winning word. "Frito". Chandeliers shook, waiters dropped their trays and clerks at the front desk sent security people to the ballroom to see what was going on. 500 people yelling the same word at the same time was, definitely, the loudest sound ever heard in that hotel.   And that's the way it happens every time. We have performed magic bingo for many major corporations.. Pepsi, Burger King, Pillsbury, ATT. and hundreds more. I kept it exclusive for our clients for over 30 years. I finally released Magic Bingo a few years ago and it has been just as effective for everyone who has done it. We found it works just as well for small groups, such as birthday parties, bar mitzvahs, anniversaries, etc. When everybody says, "Happy Birthday Marie", they are all surprised and delighted, particularly Marie. "You are all winners and have all won a piece of birthday cake".   I know now that these amazing results work the same for everybody. In the past, I slowed down distribution by making it expensive. But now we have greatly reduced the price. You can find out a lot more about it on our new website.. magicbingogame.com   So try it out, the effect is always so strong and the results so tremendous, Magic Bingo will be the strongest effect you have ever performed too!!   Happy Magic Mark Wilson   -------------------------------------------- 4. Remarkable Magic #13 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US)   Bruce Gold has performed a very neat trick!   One of the misfortunes in having spent so much time working on cruise ships for the last decade, is how few magicians I have been able to catch up with and spend time talking with. I guess it makes a lot more sense for the cruise lines to book me with singers, jugglers and stand-up comedians.   The comment I receive most often about my magic show is how much laughter I get. Indeed, in full modesty, it is true to say that laugh for laugh I get a higher laugh count than all but a handful of dedicated comedians. The other comment I get on a boringly regular basis is, "You don't need the magic at all, you could just be a comedian."   This is always meant as a compliment but has certainly become a little grating over the years. If I wanted to be a comedian I would have become one. I don't want to be a monologist, I am happy and proud to be a funny magician - it seems quite enough to me. There are scores of very excellent comedians and just a handful of really top-notch comedy magicians. It is also better business.   One performer I do get a chance to perform with onboard ships is Bruce Gold. Bruce is one of the very few magicians who has succeeded in developing a character and act that is original and first rate. He is in very high demand as a comedian but he still has the soul of a true magician hidden an inch underneath the surface of the smooth comedian.   The transformation from magician to dedicated comedian is a lot tougher than most magicians can even dream of. I also have to give a heads up to Greg Otto too, who has taken his witheringly sardonic character and developed it into a really funny stand up show. He even makes me laugh with his Facebook entries! However, today I want to concentrate on Mr. Gold.   I first noticed Bruce many years ago when he was performing his brilliant 'Psychic Toaster' routine, which is as original and funny as any trick I've seen. I would kill to have come up with this idea! Every now while presenting his pure stand-up act Bruce will slip a piece of magic into his comedy show, not because he needs it but because he wants to. His version of the floating table is a classic.   Another jolt that Bruce gave me was when we were filming an episode of the first 'Masters of Illusion' series. He performed the Don Wayne floating microphone stand (if it wasn't Don who created this I will expect the usual deluge of nasty letters correcting me!) and he dressed up the microphone stand as a 'would-be' assistant with a blonde wig. At the end of the routine the stand transformed instantly into a flesh and blood beautiful blonde. It was glorious magic and impeccably executed, real magic of the most eye-popping kind.   I recently got to spend a week working with Bruce and was surprised and delighted to discover what a truly gifted magical thinker he is. He is a died in the wool perfectionist who has as clear a view of the intricacies of magic as anyone I have met. His logic and knowledge of the commercial aspects of magic are original and unique. Much as I enjoy his comedy act it left me wishing to see him perform a full-length magic show and not just the Readers Digest versions sanctioned by the Castle.   Bruce ran through a few routines that he plans to release to the magic world in the future and I can tell you in advance; buy them as soon as they are available and put the same care into their presentation that he has put into their creation and you will have some real winners. I think that Bruce might be one of the most underappreciated magic thinkers on the scene.   If you haven't seen Bruce work then you must, you have a treat in store, I am delighted to say that I persuaded Bruce to join us in our 'boutique' magic agency. We will be developing a corporate game show to book into the slightly improving corporate market. Knowing Bruce I am expecting it to be something rather special and really look forward to working with him.   Well, this was my fan letter to Bruce, magician, graphic artist and comedian deluxe. However I want to finish the column by repeating the advice that Bruce was once given by the great Tony Giorgio, "Trust that you are enough.' These words were an inspiration to Bruce and struck me dumb with their simplicity and wisdom. I wish I had the benefit of them 20 years ago, but you also need the ears to hear them and the mind to accept them. Thank you Tony, and thank you Bruce for sharing them.   My email address is Nicklewin1@me.com   -------------------------------------------- 6. Festival Down Time - #193 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com   The other day I was sharing some thoughts with a fellow performer about working fairs and festivals. A question came up that I thought was quite intriguing. He was asking what do you and can you do on the downtime you often have between shows?   Great question as it is one that comes up a lot for those who perform at festivals and fairs each year. The more you do, the more you run into this and you need to figure out a way to either 1) relax or 2) make the time productive. The choice is obviously yours and only you can determine what the best course of action is for you.   For some entertainers, just being around the fair and festival is a fun time for them. There is so much to see and do and hear that it becomes there time to just relax and take it all in.   One thing I always do is to get comfortable. Get out of your performance clothes, dry off, drink plenty of water and just get yourself more in a relaxed and cooled down mode. It is so important to do this when you are working outside at venues like this. It also makes you feel better and makes your performances stronger. Dehydration and heat stroke are very serious issues that one must always be aware of.   I also choose to walk around the grounds and just take in the sights. But instead of just doing that, I like to talk to people and get to know them. There are a lot of fun characters at the festivals and I like to get to know them, hear their stories and have a golden opportunity to network with people. Who better to network with at festivals then those folks who attend them all the time? It is just good business and it's a lot of fun to hang with folks like this during your down time.   Now another way to combat this downtime is to solve it by offering the fair and festival an up sell solution. This is what I do a lot. One of my festival packages is to provide strolling magic between my shows. I stroll around the grounds performing for folks. This does 2 things for me. 1) it is an increased income stream because the festival is paying for it and 2) it keeps me busy and allows me to mention my other shows. In essence I get to advertise. This in return brings more people to my stage shows which makes the client even happier.   This up sell is really an easy thing for a festival to say yes to. You are providing a service to them based on a need. In essence it is like they are getting more bang for their buck and they love it. It is one way to keep yourself busy if you choose to want to stay busy.   Now another way you can combat festival downtime is to simply help the festival to plan out your stage shows. Do not think you must wait for them to do it for you. I have found I often know way more about festival entertainment then the client who is booking me does. This does not mean I show them attitude or ego. It simply means I can use this knowledge to really help them out and show them how I can be more of a solutions provider to them.   I find that most festival clients are more than happy to hear you provide helpful advice and offer up solutions to them. they really are happy to hear it because you may provide the answer they have been looking for. I always give advice from staging to where they should place the stages and even to when the best times are for my stage shows.   I contact festivals early enough in advance that I usually am the first one booked. Often times you will be sharing the stage with other acts, so I am always conscious of this as well. but by talking things over with the festival client, I can suggest a schedule that works better for me and for them. This ends up meaning less down time between shows.   I know how much time I need for set up between shows and I know how much time I need and want to relax before the next show starts.  With this information in my head, I can suggest a schedule to them and see what they say. In most cases, they will take you up on your suggestion and then plug in other acts around you.   If you can do this, it means you can get to a festival and be performing and have just enough down time as you want to have. You are more in control of your own situation.   As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. New Growing And Shrinking Head Spiral Extreme -------------------------------------------- Message by Bruce Kalver (US)   Got your letter asking about our new Growing and Shrinking Head Spiral Extreme. As you know, my Growing and Shrinking Head Illusion has become a standard for professional and part-time magicians around the world.   We had a lot of requests to make a larger size for the performers who work large venues such as theatres, large school auditoriums, stadiums, etc.   It took us a while as we had some logistical problems including weight, storage, and what to spin it with. We have solved all these problems and now have the Growing and Shrinking Head Spiral Extreme. The original spiral is around 14 inches. The new one is around 24 inches. It comes in a cardboard portfolio for shipping and storing. We also found the perfect cordless drill that not only spins it, but acts as a stand. No more holding it in your hand (which would be impossible with this big size).   Because of the size of the unit to ship (30in x 30in x 1in) the postage is a bit pricey. If your local magic shop doesn't have it, we are offering a discount of $10 off the total to help defray postal costs. Because of all the great work you do for the magic art, I would be happy to offer this coupon to your e-zine readers until December 31, 2010. Just have them use the coupon code: WATSON when they order from our website.   You can see the difference between the spirals at our website. Here is the link to the Spiral Extreme: http://tinyurl.com/323zuv4   Thanks again for asking about it and thanks again for all you do for magic. Have a wonderful holiday season.   Bruce Kalver www.tophatprod.com/magic   -------------------------------------------- 9. Broken Wand - Bob Gibbons -------------------------------------------- Message by Dennis Schick (US)   Syracuse, NY -- The man behind the voice of the New York State Fair for almost two decades died Thursday after a long battle with prostate cancer.   Bob Gibbons welcomed people to the fair and entertained children around the world as a clown, magician and comedian, leaving people smiling wherever he went, said his wife, Cathy Gibbons. He was 68.   "He will leave a legacy of laughter," she said. "He had an entertainer's heart and he loved to make people smile." For the past 19 years, Bob Gibbons' voice was broadcast throughout the fairgrounds during the state fair with morning, afternoon and evening announcements.   Joe LaGuardia, the fair's former marketing director, said Bob Gibbon's death is the end of a great era for the fair.   "People always tried to imitate his voice with a 'Welcome to the Great New York State Fair,'" LaGuardia said. "Bob was the first experience that you had when you came through the gates. It's not going to be the same."   Fair Director Dan O'Hara said Bob Gibbons wad dedicated to his work at the fair.   "He was one of those guys who had a state fair heart and soul," O'Hara said. "He really cared about the fair. He's a real staple to the fair and he's going to be missed."     Bob Gibbons was born to be an entertainer, said his sister Alice Gibbons.   "He was a performer at heart," she said. "As long as I can remember. I was his assistant doing magic tricks out of his closet. He was entertainer inside and out."   For years Bob Gibbons was known as Skoopy the clown and his wife Cathy was Sweetheart the clown. Skoopy and Sweetheart entertained children at local festivals and events for years. For the past few years, Bob Gibbons dropped the name Skoopy and the couple preformed as Bob Gibbons and Sweetheart.   "It was so much fun," Cathy Gibbons said. "He would pull tricks on me on stage. I never knew what was going to happen next. When we performed, we really got to see so much of the country and other countries."   Listen to Bob Gibbons announcing fair events. In addition to entertaining, Gibbons also taught people how to be an entertainer, Cathy Gibbons said. He also played Ronald McDonald for about 10 years in the 1980s, she said.   "He loved that character," she said.   Bob Gibbons worked as a group sales manager at the Carrier Dome for Syracuse University. During the halftime at the Syracuse University men's basketball game today there will be a moment of silence for Bob Gibbons and his picture will be put on the big screen, his wife said.   LaGuardia, who worked with Bob Gibbons at the fair for more than a decade, said he was one of a kind and will be deeply missed.   "Sure someone will replace him, but what he brought will be very difficult to replace," LaGuardia said. "His corny jokes never got better, but everyone laughed at him anyway because that was Bob."   Contact Sarah Moses at smoses@syracuse.com or 470-2298.   -------------------------------------------- 11. Broken Wand - Dr. Earl Reum -------------------------------------------- Message by Larry Campbell (US)   The magic world has lost a magical brother - "one of their very best". Dr. Earl Reum passed away on December 5th, 2010. Earl passed away peacefully at his home in Denver, Colorado. He was seventy-nine.   Magic has a very big part of his life. And he shared with anyone and everyone that he meets. He was my number one mentor in magic and in how I should live my life.   Just a little bit of his history: (1) He was a sixty-two-year member of SAM - his member number is # 4530.   (2) was a long time member of IBM.   (3) a member with Magic Collectors Association.   (4) Earl was Pres., Vice Pres., and Secretary for the Mile High Magicians Society (Assembly 37).   (5) 19 years, coordinator of Student Activities for the Denver Public School System, responsible for 125,000 students. Then moving to the Jefferson County he was their coordinator for 15 years before retiring.   (6) After retiring he become a consultant, performing and teaching in USA also Canada - doing assemblies, conventions, and educational conferences.   (7) Forty years he was the director at the Nation Student Council Leadership Conference in Estes Park, Colorado.   He really loved what he did and did what he loved - we will all miss a true brother in the Magic field.   Just a note: At his service last Sunday night - his ashes were in Die Box (with a clown nose on the front of it) - there were about 400 people in attendance (each of us were given a Red Clown Nose - a Belly Button and a squeaker). It was Earl's way of saying "be sure to bring smiles to the people that you meet each day".   Thanks Earl - I (with a lot of others) will miss you. You made me what I am today - Thanks, Zeezo   -------------------------------------------- 12. The Business Of Manufacturing Hot Rods -------------------------------------------- Message by Larry Campbell (US)   Need a favor (if you would please) would you be so kind and help me find a person that is in the business of manufacturing Hot Rods. I have a new concept of for the Hot Rod. I will gladly give it to someone (at no cost for the idea) that would manufacture them and put it on the market. Their only cost is to make a few for me and call it "The ZEEZO Hot Rod".   Email contact: czeezo@gmail.com   -------------------------------------------- 18. Last Chance For I.B.M.
