Editor's Message -------------------------------------------- Magic New Zealand now has 16500+ subscribers around the world. 17 different magic publications have permission to carry articles from Magic New Zealand however I am very concerned about one thing. Several individuals are copying material from the eZine and issuing it under their own names. At this stage I will not name them but this is unethical behavior. It damages the e-Zine, lessens its impact and in some cases presents wrong, damaging and incorrect information. It is really discouraging when the eZine is so widely accepted and appreciated. There is a saying that "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" but this is not imitation: it is piracy at best, theft at worst. Please don't do it: and if you recognize material elsewhere on the Internet which you recognize as having been copied from the e-Zine, please take appropriate action by advising me and perhaps telling the person responsible how you feel about what they have done. Alan Watson - Editor Magic New Zealand ------------------------ Now on a positive note Magic New Zealand is out earlier this week as I am getting ready for The Essential Magic Conference (EMC) which starts tonight for me. In Portugal it starts 3.00pm BUT in New Zealand because of the time zone its 2am. Remember if you have any magic news drop me a line: Editor@MagicNewZealand.com -------------------------------------------- 2. The Essential Magic Conference Starts Tomorrow -------------------------------------------- Message by Luis de Matos EMC 2011 7-8-9 July 2011 A message from Eric Eswin - President FISM When Luis, David and Marco launched the EMC in 2010, I instinctively felt that they were moving the Art of Magic a significant step forward and immediately agreed to contribute to it. The step forward is 'significant', because it was a step in a new direction. A new path was going to be explored. A new path, well in line with modern ways of communicating and away from traditional magic conventions. And now this new path shall be further explored this year. Great! This new virtual magic experience comes at a time when many traditional face-to-face conventions suffer from declining attendees. At a time when many magic clubs all over the world are suffering from ageing. At a time when it seems to be necessary to re-define our magic conventions. Don't misunderstand me. I am not against our face-to-face or real-world magic conventions. These have their upsides. Face-to-face conventions let you expand your network and provide personal interaction with presenters and other attendees, which makes learning easier. On the other hand, virtual meetings are time and costs saving events and you can attend the course you want at a time that suits you best. So both ways of communicating have their pros. It is time to find a symbiosis between the two to the benefit of the Art of Magic. If you have been at the EMC 2010 you will certainly not miss this year's EMC. If you missed the first EMC, then now is the time to expand your magic horizon and to be in the frontline of a new wave. Subscribe today to the EMC2011 go to: http://www.essentialmagicconference.com/users/new You will not regret it. P.S. I read in a recent scientific study that virtual conventions give a boost to the attendance of real-world conventions! May I subtlety remind you of the FISM World Championships of Magic 2012 to be held in July 2012 in Blackpool, UK? Last chance to Join 33 Of The World's Finest Magicians - EMC 2011 7-8-9 July 2011 The entire conference will be broadcast via the internet. It features lectures and demonstrations by some of the most important thinkers in magic. You can watch the lectures live from your computer. More Remarkable Magic # 42 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) Some slightly scattered thoughts. I am in the middle of some crazy travel through Internet wilderness this week; therefore I will just write a brief paragraph or two for this current edition of Magic New Zealand. Firstly I would like to thank the International Brotherhood of Magicians for their recent citation of me for my literary efforts. It was a very nice gesture and one that I truly appreciate. There was never the slightest thought in my mind when I started writing about magic that I would ever receive any awards for doing so. I just thought it would be fun! It has been a lot of fun and I appreciate the attention I have received from doing so. In the last five years of writing, I have contributed to Magic New Zealand, The Linking Ring, Magicana, Magic Magazine and the Magic Circular; it has been an honor to do so. I do find it rather strange that as someone who has performed magic as a full-time professional for over 40 years that I am better known within the fraternity as a writer than a performer. I am slowly beginning to integrate some more magical events into my schedule and reclaim my turf as a performer to my new friends in the magic world. I am looking forward to appearing at the TAOM convention in San Antonio later this year and adding other lecture dates to my schedule. Who knows----after a 26-year gap, maybe I will book a date at the Magic Castle where I honed my craft in the '70s. Talking about the Castle, those of you reading this column that live in the Los Angeles area have a treat on their doorsteps this week at the Castle. In the Palace is a wonderful show featuring two of my favorite performers Chipper Lowell and Jason Andrews. These two performers are as unalike as chalk and cheese but united by their enormous talent and likeability. Great booking Jack---If I wasn't in Europe I would be there to enjoy this special event. Looking back on my files of past columns I notice two glaring omissions in my content-Paul Daniels and Wayne Dobson. Having left England in 1973 I missed the rise of these two remarkable performers who have made such an impact on the entertainment scene in my homeland. I have tried to limit my writing to people whose work I am personally familiar with the manner in which it has affected me. I have never seen either of these two tidal waves of talent performing live. The loss is all mine, and I have endless respect for the ideas, prestige and qualities that they have added to the magic world. Now I am spending more time in the magic world I will look forward to becoming more familiar with them personally. In the same vein I have never met the legendary David Berglas but I am filled with a glorious anticipation on getting my hands on the spectacular new book about the man and his ideas. Growing up in England when I did it was Berglas, Robert Harbin and David Nixon that I saw performing on television and inspired me to become a professional magician. I have happy memories of all the times these gentlemen amazed and amused me on the 'telly.' They are a huge part of the foundation on which my performing life has been built. Drop me an email with any comments at nicklewin1@me.com -------------------------------------------- 8. Performing at Hospitals - #217 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com I first must say that anyone who goes out and performs at hospitals and children's wards gets my hats off and salute. There is nothing more rewarding then giving a bit of your time to make a child try and feel better or smile or forget what they are going through even for a little while. Often times when you perform shows like this they will ask you to do the following. You may do a stage style show in one of the larger open rooms for those that can be moved or can come to see it. Then they may have you go bed side for those who cannot be moved from their rooms. This way all children get to experience the magic. If they do not suggest this, make sure you suggest it to them as it does make a huge difference to child and parents of that child. When you are talking with the hospital etc., make sure you ask questions ahead of time as to what is allowed and what is not. They will be able to tell you fairly easily as certain places have policies in effect. Never assume. Always ask. In many cases fire is not allowed as latex or possibly things containing peanuts. Many places have different limitations so ask ahead of time what these may be so you know how to customize your show experience. It is also good form to ask what areas of the hospital you may be performing in. Simply stated, if you are going into a burn unit area, you will want to stay away from any magic or effects or patter that references fire. It may seem like common sense, but in many cases we can forget where we are and not realize a routine or patter may cause issues. I also always ask that the children who have the ability to assist me, be placed closer to me or in an area that I know of ahead of time. This prevents you from an awkward moment of selecting a child who wants to help, but simply cannot. If you ask ahead of time, they can arrange this for you. I also ask that there be at least several nurses or staff on hand that can assist me during the show. This way they are there in the event I need them to be and the children tend to feel a bit more at ease about it. Also always ask where the nurses station is and locate the phone on the wall in the room. The reason is that if for some reason the staff gets called away and a situation occurs in the room, you need to be able to act immediately and appropriately. After the show, you may want to do magic bedside for those children that cannot be moved for your show. This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with a child who may be having a rougher time. Whenever I do bed side magic, I always ask a nurse to escort me and be by my side throughout the duration. This is very important. The nurses job is to tell me anything I may need to know prior to going into any room. They may let you know what not to say or that the child cannot use his right hand etc. Their job is to give you vital information so that you can entertain without the awkwardness of saying something wrong or asking them to do something they cannot do. Every room they tell me information I need to know so I can customize what I present. Now what makes the kids smile? What makes them laugh or feel good even when they are not? Well the quick answer is you being genuine to them. Be yourself and do not feel sorry for them or show it inside. You need to be peppy and lively and full of good spirit. Kids can read you and they can see if you are worried or nervous. Just go in and have a smile on your face. A smile and a feeling of joy is contagious. A lot of tricks that play well at your kid show will also play well for them also. Children are children regardless of where they are. I have found that humor is really a strong key though. If you can make them laugh, they will then ultimately smile. It goes hand in hand. So a lot of what I do is aimed at laughter. I can do physical humor to me or have a wand break in my hands. I can grab a wand and not realize it is a rubber chicken. Things of this type can make children laugh. I also have found power in puppets. They work great. Kids love puppets and they can relate to them more when not feeling well. You do not have to be great at it to get results. Sometimes just a puppet the child can relate to and they do not see you as an adult they do not know. They gear more to the puppet and the laughs and smiles soon follow. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. Tony Brook In Conversation With John Teo - Part 4 -------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA TB: Congratulations John. I have seen those effects as you were kind enough to give me a signed copy. Very interesting thinking that you have applied. I am especially fond of your, "To Each His Own". What was your thinking behind that? JT: Thank you. Regarding, 'To Each His Own', as a Management Trainer, I often use Magic to illustrate a point. Using magic in training is not new. It has its roots in gospel magic. Preachers use magic as object lessons to bring out gospel truths. In 2000, I got the inspirations and wrote a book on gospel magic containing some 22 effects. This was not published officially. Coming back to, 'To Each His Own', it is interesting that you like this one because not only is it one of my favorites but it is also the effect that has the greatest impact on the participants. TB: Why do you think it does? JT: I think it does because it is highly visual, the magic happens very quickly and the results are much unexpected. TB: Without revealing too much, please outline the effect. JT: At its very basic level it is the linking of three loops of ropes. However, what makes it interesting is the fact that via the accompanying patter, I use the magic to illustrate the benefits of teamwork. In other words, instead of each working on his or her own or as separate departments, I use the linking of the ropes to visually show the benefits of working in unison. Also given the fact that two spectators actually tie the two ropes to make links give it an added zest. TB: That it certainly does. I can't do this effect the justice it deserves in a few words but if anyone reads it in its entirety they will clearly see that by taking a simple premise you have given it a great deal of creative thought and thereby enhanced the application. JT: Thank you Tony. As you and I both know, presentation is the key. The message, either verbal and/or visual must be the premise on which the magic happens. TB: Indeed it is and as you rightly state, the communication factor is the key .three entries, one of them a runner-up, "To Each His Own" won you the third prize, and you also won the First Prize. Quite an achievement. JT: Thank you Tony. I was awarded first prize for my "Fruit Of The Spirit". As I also perform a lot of Gospel Magic, I came up with effect using a Crystal Silk Cylinder. Again, this is highly visual and conveys a powerful Gospel message. TB: Great effect. Very powerful thinking. But it doesn't end there does it? In 2009, you had some further success. JT: Yes I did Tony. In 2009, Leaping Lizards Magic of USA organized a competition to come out with a routine based on one of Howard Adams' ideas. I submitted two entries and one of them became the prize winner. There was only one winner. The prize was the massive tome of Howard Adams called "Matchalot Mentalism" (252 mentalism effects with cards). End of Part 4 -------------------------------------------- 10. Blackpool Goes Mental -------------------------------------------- Message by Peter Eldin (UK) The amazing mentalist Docc Hilford is the star lecturer at Blackpool Magicians' Club on Wednesday 13 July. Visiting Harry Houdini's Grave In New York -------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook As the old song goes, "I love New York in June". I certainly did . On a recent trip to New York, a few weeks ago, I was the guest of George & Nina Schindler. For those who may not know, George is a Magic legend & The Dean of The Society of American Magicians. Thanks to George, I visited Tannen's, Fantasma, had lunch with an amazing group of Magicians at the famous Edson Café and attended The Long Island Mystics annual dinner. Spent quality time with several old friends such as Bobby Torkova and Simon Lovell, who kindly comped me to see his amazing show. I also had many wonderful non-magic related events and via my friend Lt. William Gleason of the NYFD, I was given not one but two special tours of Ground Zero. But all of that is for telling another time! Towards the end of my stay, on a Sunday morning, I was very honored and highly privileged to be taken to visit the cemetery that houses the grave-site of Harry Houdini and members of his family. It is quite remarkable to be allowed access to the cemetery and even more remarkable to be allowed to video, photograph and be given some background history by none other The Dean of The S.A.M For now, here is just some of the background. The grave is located at Machpelah Cemetery and contrary to popular belief the grave-site does not belong to The S.A.M. However, it is maintained by The S.A.M. During the course of my visit, we took several photographs and video. This is currently being Edited & complied into a DVD and will eventually be part of The S.A.M library. The actual plot not only houses Harry Houdini (who incidentally was a Past National President of The S.A.M) but also several members of his family. Interestingly, I was informed by expert Historians that Bess's body may not be there as is commonly believed. It is also a little known fact that David Copperfield donated funds towards much needed restoration work that resulted from vandalism. The bust has been removed and kept in a secret location. Interestingly, for those like myself who delight in "strange & unusual happenings", it is worth noting that exactly 90º behind the Houdini gravesite is another bearing the name Theo.Hardeen! All this and more will be shortly revealed on the DVD. And last .but not least . I cannot conclude without mentioning "Party Card Tricks". As many of you would know, I have, over the years, written many Product reviews ... if you are looking for some very cool Magic that is very original in its Presentation and indeed in its content .. I was blown away in New York by a CD entitled, "Party Card Tricks". I cannot rate it highly enough. It has MP3 files to Download and PDF instructions. Perfect for an iPod, iPhone, etc . . here's what has been said, and I quote, "anytime, anywhere, ordinary deck ..self-working...stun your audience" .. it's a steal at just under $20. If your dealer doesn't stock it . get him/her to check out: www.showbizmagic.com -------------------------------------------- 14. Houdini: Heritage Photography Exhibition -------------------------------------------- Message by Kristina - Bernard's Magic Shop Please let your readers know about the follow: If you happen to be in Victoria (Australia) and in the Melton area, you may want to visit the "Houdini: Heritage Photography Exhibition!" Tomb Of Compars Herrmann -------------------------------------------- Message by Magic Christian Dear friends and collectors of magic and magic history, The Magic Club of Vienna and Magic Christian are going to renovate the tomb of Compars Herrmann which is situated at the Vienna central Cemetery in the Jewish section. Several of you saw the tomb during the 3rd European Collectors Meeting in Vienna in September 2009. It is in a very bad condition and all the metal decoration was ripped off during the Second World War. Last year Magic Christian could achieve that a street in Vienna is named after the Great Compars Herrmann and several magicians, private persons and the magic circle of Dresden (1016 ?) started already to donate money to restore this impressive grave. The Magic Club of Vienna decided it will spend 3.500 ? and we hope that this will encourage other magicians and collectors to donate some money too. The Magische Zirkel of Dresden collected and spent 10I6 ?, private donation of a relative of the family Herrmann wants to spend 250 ?. As well as others. At the moment we have about 5.000.- ? on the account and it is about 45% of the sum which is needed to put this tomb back into the original status. As you can see on the pictures. One as it looked like around 1900, one as I found it in 1988 and later 2009 and one after cleaning it before the Collectors' Meeting in September 2009. The most expensive things will be: The garland of flowers around the stone: about 3.400.- ? (It is 4,5 meters long!) The restoration of the inscription on the stone: 1.100.- ? The metal surrounds, new doors and rings on top the grave: about 3.600.- The fire bowl on top with the stone: 2.000 - 2400.- ? Cleaning of the stone and putting the stone plates in order again: 300.- to 500.- ? Some extras like a plate with the names of the donators, taking care yearly, etc.: 500 - 1.000.- ? Of course it will be possible to take over some of the costs in parts or completely like the Magischer Zirkel of Dresden decided to cover restoration of the inscription. It will be noted on the plate like all other donators. We are also trying to have the City of Vienna make it to an honorary grave like the one of J.N. Hofzinser, but first we have to restore most of the parts which are in very bad condition to show that the magic society is really interested to preserve this tomb. Poster Celebrating 100 Years Of Magic -------------------------------------------- Message by Paul Stone I am delighted to announce that I have commissioned Norm Nielsen to produce a special poster celebrating 100 Years of Magic at the London Palladium to complement the 'Palladium Magic' Charity Show that I am producing at the 'Home of Variety' on Monday 19th September. The poster features many of the magicians who have appeared at this world famous Theatre over the past 100 years. It also includes a few other notable performers who have a special connection to the Palladium. Whether you are a Collector or just a magic fan, this is one poster you should definitely own. The quality, as you would expect from Norm Nielsen, is superb, and proceeds from the sale of these posters are being donated to MagiCaresTM The Magic Charity. To check out and order this wonderful poster, go to www.nnmagic.com If you are a Close-up magician and you want to be a part of the unique 'Palladium Magic' Show at this legendary Theatre, we are getting near to the 'last call'. Buy 4 'Best' tickets for your family and friends and in return you'll experience the thrill of performing Close-up Magic at the London Palladium and walking out on that famous stage to take your bow. If you are interested, you should apply now to producer@palladiummagic.com You'll probably never have another chance!
