David Copperfield Named 'King Of Magic' --------------------------------------------- Message by George Schindler (US) David Copperfield named 'King Of Magic' and 'Magician Of The Century' The Society of American Magicians (S.A.M.) will award illusionist David Copperfield their highest honor today, "Magician of the Century", and name him the 'King of Magic,' an award which has never before been given by the association. S.A.M., the oldest and most prestigious magic organization in the world founded in 1902 and led by past president Harry Houdini himself is recognizing Copperfield for his efforts to preserve, promote and enhance the art of magic throughout his legendary career. Its esteemed national president, Vinny Grosso, says that Copperfield has, "accomplished more than anyone else in the field of magic today." Copperfield was named Magician of the Century for the last century, and Magician of the Millennium from other organizations. Among his many achievements, S.A.M. highlighted Copperfield's dedication to excellence which has earned him the Living Legend Award from The Library of Congress, the first Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame awarded to a living magician, a knighthood by the French government, 11 Guinness World Records and 21 Emmy awards. He has sold more tickets than any other solo artist in history and recently crossed $3 billion in ticket sales worldwide. In 1982, Copperfield created Project Magic, which teaches sleight-of-hand magic to those with disabilities as a method of physical and occupational therapy. In addition, Copperfield is the creator and curator of the International Museum and Library of Conjuring Arts, which holds the world's largest collection of historical magical artifacts, including Houdini's Water Torture Cell and Orson Welles' Buzz Saw Illusion. The Society of American Magicians was founded on May 10, 1902 in Martinka's famous magic shop in New York City, New York. For over a century it has promoted the ideals shared by Kellar, Houdini, Thurston and over 45,000 others world-wide who have held membership in the society. Copperfield said, "I'm humbled by the honor and grateful to be recognized by this great organization." Contact: www.magicsam.com 718- 336 -0605 -------------------------------------------- 3. More Remarkable Magic # 51 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) Playing the Castle again......... It really doesn't seem possible but it has been 26 years since I last played the Magic Castle. Over a quarter of a century since I had my free prime rib dinner! I wonder what made me decide to do it? I certainly don't regret my decision to stop performing at the Castle, it was the start of an incredibly productive, profitable and creative phase of my life and career. It was very easy to become a 'Castle magician' and this really did limit ones thinking about the rest of the entertainment world. When you work primarily for magicians, or around magicians, you begin to adapt/adopt a magician's thought process to the work you are doing. You start to add little things that magicians will enjoy - even if it complicates or obscures things for the lay public. Sometimes it works the other way around and you remove things that are old hat to your magic buddies but actually mean a lot to non-magicians. Making audiences laugh at the Castle was/is too easy - they are lovely crowds of people who are there to enjoy magic and are more than eager to have a good laugh as they do so. They usually give the performer the benefit of the doubt and laugh more easily than the kind of slightly more judgmental folk you often bump into in less specialized circles. The great part about the Castle is getting to do those 21 shows in a week. If you can't get a routine up and running and moving towards perfection after that many shows, in that space of time - you just might be in the wrong business! I cut my eyeteeth and carved out many of the routines that have earned me a fine living over the years. I am truly grateful to the Magic Castle for that opportunity. What have I learned in my 'post Castle' years? I have learned how to present a non-stop 60 minute show that moves so quickly and seamlessly that it seems like 30. I have learned how to win over audiences who not only are indifferent to magic but even somewhat hostile to it. I have learned the techniques and ethics of the comedy world. I have seen the United States and most of the rest of the world - traveling in style and as a true 'Road Warrior.' Not a bad list and it only scratches the surface. I couldn't have learned any of these things if I hadn't flown from the safety of the Magic Castle nest. As I enter the next phase of my work I am excited to perform for magicians again and I'm enjoying lecturing and writing about the performance of strong comedy magic. It feels good - there is a satisfactory feeling of passing on some knowledge and sharing my discoveries. I am past the age limit where I am likely to be much affected by what magicians think about what I do or say. I like that. When Jack Goldfinger asked me about working a week at the Castle, I thought about it and said yes. Of course, if Jack said, "Come on Nick, let's fly to the moon". I would probably just start flapping my arms". Jack is one of the wisest, funniest, coolest cats it has ever been my pleasure to know. So, November 28th through December 4th I will be working the early shift in the 'Close-Up Gallery'. Most people these days think of me as a stand-up comedy performer but I spent many a week in the Gallery and even got nominated as Close-up magician of the year a couple of times. It will be a real return home. I don't have any real desire to perform my comedy magic show at the Magic Castle. I have nothing to prove and a lot of funny lines to lose. The thought of being in a jewel box showroom and performing some sleight-of-hand and card tricks - now that's different! I can set myself some goals and work on regaining some slightly rusted skills. I can't wait to see the show progressing and improving each day. I hope all my old friends, and any of my readers who haven't met me, will stop on by and say hello. It might be another 26 years before I do it again! Drop me an email at nicklewin26@gmail.com -------------------------------------------- 6. Chair Suspension - Safety Tips - #225 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com Although you may really fall in love with the chair suspension illusion, be sure you really adhere to some very common safety tips when performing it. - Make sure even though the illusion (Sommer's and Mak models) can handle 150-160 lbs, I never ever go over 100lbs. This is just a safety measure I do and keeps the board from sagging at all. In fact I will usually try and use a kid under 85lbs as it works better. - Make sure that you do a triple check of the alignment before placing the child on it. Once when you set it up, secondly right before the show starts and one last time as the child is coming up on stage. Make sure everything is aligned right on the anchor chair. (I can go over more details on this in a PM) - Be careful when the child is sitting and then going into the laying down position. I always have myself (if doing it solo) or my wife helps hold the non-anchored chair where the board rests on. This is done for a reason. If the child moves forward or backwards on the board, it can cause the board and anchor point to pivot like a lever and it can cause the weld to snap right off. Be careful of this and have someone or yourself hold that board top the non-anchor chair when the child is sitting and lying down. - Make sure the child is in the right position - that their shoulders are aligned with the top of the anchor board. This distributes the weight evenly and adds to the illusion of the person being suspended just by their neck area alone. This is the proper look and feel for the illusion. - Do NOT ever perform the trick just because you feel like you have to or because you want to. That is never a good enough reason. Your most critical and first notion when performing this is to make sure that you have every safety precaution met before you perform it. If any of the safety steps are not met or cannot be met, then you must be willing to not perform it and move on to something else. I have done this several times and it is out of safety first. The client never has a problem with it, because I make it clear to them that safety comes first. - If you feel or sense a child becoming scared or uneasy with the illusion, do not continue with it. Let the child sit back down and applaud them for being so brave. Give them a certificate and make them feel special. Getting on the board can sometimes scare children and even if you feel you are taking all the right steps, it can still happen. You must be willing to send the child back (happy) and not risk doing it with them. If they are scared, then you can always empower them again by allowing them to be the magician and it is THEM that makes a friend suspend. They still are made to be the star. - Make sure to have the child lay down flat on their back and in the middle of the board. Fold their hands on the lap in front of them and place their legs close together. This makes them feel comfortable but also limits them from wanting to move during the illusion. It is a relaxed position. - Do NOT rush right into the illusion. I always do this as an ending to my show. By this point the children know me and have fun with me and I have built up trust with them. Even then, I take my time and structure my routine so that I build confidence in the child before we place them on it. - Never ever touch a child unless you ask their permission first. When I perform this, I take steps in getting them into position on the board. We take steps so that each part is understood by them and they know what to expect. I ask them if it is OK if I can lift them up to sit on the board. I ask them if I can move them forward. This builds trust between you and the helper and is very critical. As I am clearly saying here and right now, even with my safety first precautions, there is no certainty that nothing will ever go wrong, Things do happen and that goes for a lot of various effects. But, you really can minimize your chances of anything happening by following some simple tips. If you follow these tips, you will rarely ever have a problem or issue. - Always do a triple check of the area in which you are performing this illusion. If indoors, make sure the floor is level and the anchor chair is level as well. It must not rock or tip in any form. Also check to make sure that the chair is sitting right so that it is not leaning or wanting to lean backwards. - If outdoors, be even more careful the ground you are setting the chairs on. Make sure you have a nice level area and that the chairs are sitting properly. - Place the board and anchor points right aligned with each other. Check these points and make sure they are sitting and anchored properly. Check this and triple check it. 1) check it at first set-up, 2) check it before the show starts and 3) check it right before you are about to place the child on. They must be aligned correctly. (I can discuss in more detail in a PM) - Use a step stool to help the child up onto the board. This makes it easy for them and for you without them jumping up on it and possibly hurting themselves or shifting the board in the process. They can simply stand up on the stool and sit down easily. The position of this stool can also allow the child to be in the perfect spot without you having to do much of anything. - Make sure that the child is positioned right on the chairs. This is one area of which I constantly see people doing wrong. If not properly placed on the board, it can cause the board to sag or lean. Make sure to 1) Have the child centered on the board 2) fold their hands on top of each other on their laps (centralizes the weight more) 3) Make sure their shoulders are even with the edge of the anchor chair. These are just some of the safety tips I do every time out. It seems like a lot, but it is so important to the success of this illusion. And, if you do them as often as I do them, then it becomes habit and you just do it every time naturally. It works great if you know how to not only set it up right, but how to routine it so that the child feels safe, trusts you, and wants to take part in the FUN of the effect. If you also follow the simple safety measures I discussed, you should never have a problem with it at all. Just remember that safety on this ALWAYS comes first over anything else. You must not get carried away with the magic, that you forget the safety of the child involved. When getting them to lie down on the board, do it in two steps. Have them sit first (then pause), and then have them lay down on their backs. By breaking it down in this fashion, it makes it easier on you, easier on them and the move does not cause the board to get off kilter. I hope this is of help to some and gets you thinking if you already own the illusion or if you are thinking of buying one for usage in your kid's shows. Tony Brook In Conversation With Jon Racherbaumer - Part 1 -------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA There are not many people who have been gifted with the skills of a brilliant writer. Even fewer people have the talent to write about magic and magicians. Jon Racherbaumer knows how to use words. He knows a great deal about magic and magicians. When it comes to writing about magic and magicians Jon Racherbaumer is the acknowledged leader. His name is well known to the magic world and hence also to the readers of The Linking Ring, M-U-M, Magic and Genii. He has written almost 70 books, and to date, well over a million meaningful words on magic. He has the unique ability and genius to make the esoteric understandable. He is, without any doubt, one of the most prolific writers on magic. With the excellent use of language and vocabulary he brings passion and value to our ancient art. I am honoured to be on the same Panel of Advisors with him on the magic web channel and it was a distinct honour for me to be on the Close-up panel of judges with him at The Society of American Magicians 2001 convention in his home town of New Orleans. I am proud to be his friend and number 1 fan. I have had the privilege of spending fun times with Jon and I enjoy referring to him as The Thesaurus. He has always been a great source of inspiration to me and I'm indebted to him for several reasons - much too many to list. I am delighted and honored to share one of our many conversations. www.joncards.com ADB: Hello, Jon, and thanks for taking the time to share some of your experiences and thoughts. Jon Racherbaumer: My pleasure Tony; it is always fun with you. ADB: Thank you Jon likewise. If I recall correctly, some family members sparked your interest in Magic .. JR: That's right Tony, my interest in magic was sparked by two uncles. They both performed pocket tricks. Another boyhood friend, Terry Kiser (a retired Hollywood actor best known for playing "Bernie" in the cult film "Weekend with Bernie"), showed me several tricks from a magic set that fooled me badly. Then I later saw Dr. Harlan Tarbell's full-evening show, which really hooked me. I also borrowed books from the library and started hanging out in magic stores such as the Mazda Magic Shop in Oak Park, Illinois. I joined the Mazda Mystics Ring in 1954. From that day forward, the "snowball" kept rolling and getting bigger. ADB: The world knows Jon Racherbaumer as a prolific writer and columnist. Where and how did this passion for writing begin? JR: This may surprise you Tony but as a kid, I detested reading. I didn't begin to seriously read until I was 16 years old when I discovered Emerson's Essays. Back then I also started scribbling free verse; however, the notion of writing anything serious about performing magic didn't hit me until 1967, the year I met Eddie Fields. He asked me to write a notebook of his tricks, which later resulted in my first book, The Artful Dodges of Eddie Fields. This led to self-publishing Hierophant and Kabbala in the 70's. End of Part 1 -------------------------------------------- 8. Magical 1 Malaysia Festival - Richard Forget - Canada -------------------------------------------- Message by Jay Scott Berry Once again, I am very happy to give this update on the Magical 1 Malaysia Festival, which will be held from March 23rd through 25th, 2012 in Kuala Lumpur. As many of you know, I have performed all over the world and produced many shows and festivals. For this upcoming event, I am drawing upon all of that past experience to set a new standard in international magic gatherings. The Magical 1 Malaysia Festival promises to be one of the largest celebrations of wonder in ever held in Asia. To accomplish this will be no small feat. First, you need a dedicated team of world-class magical performers; masters of Close-up and Stage. Over the last year, I have searched far and wide to assemble such a team. With that in mind, I am very happy to announce that Richard Forget, from Canada will be joining our all-star program. He is a multi-award winning Artist with a fresh, modern style that places him in the forefront of cutting-edge magic. Richard will join our ever-growing cast, which includes Michael Ammar, Dirk Losander and Rafael Benatar, with many more, soon to be announced! Of course, the cast is only as good as the stage they are presented on. I can thank my friend and co-producer, Mahdi Moammer (Moudini), with finding and securing one the world's finest convention centres for this Festival. It houses the Plenary Hall, a state-of-the-art theatre which has hosted many full-scale shows, musicals, major-name concerts and more. All of our gala shows will take place in this spectacular, 4,500 seat theatre. There is only one way to describe the KLCC: It is the heart of Kuala Lumpur, a veritable "city within a city". It offers a myriad of interesting attractions, including a 6 story shopping mall, all built around a beautiful, 20 hectare, public park. At once an entertainment, commercial and business focal point, the KLCC is home to some of the most popular landmarks in Malaysia, making it a popular tourist destination. With a host of options to choose from - dining, arts, culture, recreation, sightseeing, shopping and entertainment - you won't be stuck for ideas on what to do during your visit. It is readily accessible via public transport with many buses operating on various routes within the area and train stations nearby. Lodging is not a problem either as there are numerous hotels within easy walking distance. Finally, no magic event would be complete without a full complement of world-class magic dealers. So, around the theatre itself, we will feature an extensive dealer's area, catering to magicians and lay public alike. In fact, I am very happy to announce that we are now taking applications from all dealers who wish to be a part of this special event. Space is limited and will sell out fast, so please contact me ASAP for more information and to reserve your space: jsb@jayscottberry.com For more information, please see our official website: www.Magical1Malaysia.com I hope to see you there, -------------------------------------------- 9. Marc is a mind-reader and psychological magician who gives his audience bafflement, amazement and, most important of all, entertainment. In his lecture, entitled 'Mental FX', Marc will be explaining in detail some of his pet routines all of which are exceedingly practical and commercial. They are all from his professional shows and have been honed for the corporate market. Because of the huge amount of travel he does each year he has stripped down his performance material to use minimal props but still have maximum impact on the audience. Marc will talk about how you can work an effect to an audience of one or how you can perform the same effect to an audience of thousands. Even if you have no interest in mentalism as such you will gain a lot of knowledge from studying the way that Marc thinks and works - and you will be entertained as well! -------------------------------------------- 12.
