Editor's Message -------------------------------------------- Magicians travelled from all over New Zealand to attend the extremely popular Oscar Munoz lecture on children's, stage and close-up magic and they all agreed there was something for everybody. It was great hearing comments like "this would have to be one of the best lectures ever". Remember if you have any magic news drop me a line: Editor@MagicNewZealand.com -------------------------------------------- 2. Michael Woolf Has Suffered A Cardiac Arrest --------------------------------------------- Message by Roderick Mulgan (NZ) Michael Woolf is in the intensive care unit of Wellington Hospital Michael Woolf is recovering in the intensive care unit of Wellington Hospital from a cardiac arrest he suffered on Monday morning. He collapsed in the grounds of the hospital while attending a routine appointment. The proximity of resuscitation equipment saved his life. He spent 24 hours in an induced coma, and started to wake up this morning and speak to people. He appears to be out of immediate danger, but is likely to face a long period of recuperation. Michael was in good health and has just returned from an extensive overseas trip. This episode was completely unexpected. His wife Jill, sons Nick, Jeremy and Tony, brother John, and grandson Josh are at his bedside or returning from various parts of the world. They ask for privacy for the time being. Could all enquiries or messages for Michael and the family be directed to myself until further notice. "National Magic Week" Proclaimed -------------------------------------------- Message by George Schindler (US) By Society Of American Magicians October 25 to 31 2011 New York- September 15, 2011 - Vinny Grosso, National President of the Society of American Magicians, proclaimed the week of October 25 to October 31 2011 as National Magic Week throughout the United States and Canada. For more than forty years the Society has recognized the anniversary of the death of Harry Houdini with a special "week" of events to highlight the charitable work of the Society throughout the year. During the year the members of the S.A.M. perform for Senior Citizens in nursing homes, plus in VA Hospitals and for schools and libraries for children who cannot afford the luxury of live entertainment. The free shows are part of the service programs by its members. Magic Week is when the magicians can take their bows. Public magic events and exhibits will be taking place all over the country. Each year governors, mayors and other governing bodies throughout the country are requested to issue proclamations declaring the last week in October as National Magic Week, encouraging magicians throughout the country to participate in the activities. For more details and a history of this event see http://www.magicsam.com/magicweek.asp -------------------------------------------- 4. October Issue Of Genii Magazine -------------------------------------------- Message by Richard Kaufman (US) Before I go into my spiel about the October issue of Genii, I must mention the sudden death of my close friend and collaborator Earle Oakes. Earle was a unique gentleman who has been illustrating my books since 1993, and the "Magicana" column in Genii since 1999. His illustrations have appeared in almost every issue over the past 11 years. He was the finest illustrator of sleight of hand in the world, sometimes dedicating an entire day to a single drawing. He was also a kind and generous person who was not at all ready to leave this world, even at age 88. He died on Saturday, September 17, of a massive stroke. The October issue of Genii should shortly begin reaching subscribers. This month our cover story was written, designed, and laid out by Dan and Dave Buck, and includes eight sleights and tricks of their invention. Additional features include an article about an existential play focusing on three dying magicians produced in Argentina, and reported by Alba, and a profile of the magical couple Sarlot and Eyed, who perform at their own venue in Arizona. Columns include Jim Steinmeyer's "Conjuring" with a packs-small-plays-big piece of mentalism; "Aaron Fisher Teaches Card Magic," in which Aaron explains the subtleties of the Overhand Shuffle Control; David Britland's "Cardopolis" teaches a nifty packet Ambitious Card routine; Max Maven lends an ear to mentalism in "Lost Horizons"; John Gaughan reveals (literally) the inner workings of Jossefy's "Balsamo" the living skull in his "Chamber of Secrets"; and Jon Racherbaumer once again ponders the universe in "On the Slant." I carry on a bit in "Genii Speaks," and Danny Orleans, David Britland, and Joe M. Turner review the latest tricks, books, and videos in "Light from the Lamp." The digital edition of the October issue (FREE to all subscribers) contains six videos and two audio columns. I hope you enjoy it! About the Audio and Video Supplements in Genii's digital edition: One of the things I've noticed in my travels in the past six months are how many people have iPads. Apple is projected to sell another 40 million this year, and it's easy to see why. Thousands of people have downloaded Genii's free iPad app, and the issues on the iPad are free to all subscribers as well. When you subscribe to the paper, you get the digital free. One of the things I enjoy about our iGenii digital edition of the magazine is the opportunity to include audio and video supplements. As I meet Genii readers at magic conventions, I ask if they've looked at the digital edition and they sometimes say, "I'm a paper guy." Well, even if you prefer to read the paper edition of Genii, the digital iGenii edition offers at least an hour of video in every issue. Genii gives you more than any other magazine in magic for your money. Subscriber to Genii for only $56 for one year and you receive: * 12 paper issues delivered to your home. * The current issue online, free to all subscribers, with audio and video extras. (Subscribers can read these issues weeks before the paper issue arrives.) * Access to every single back issue Genii has published from 1936 through December 2008. That's almost 1000 issues! Tens of thousands of columns, tricks, illusions, and articles. And it's all absolutely free to every Genii subscriber. Of course you will have to be on the internet for access, which will be through the Conjuring Arts Research Center. The issues are simple pdf documents which can be read on most electronic devices including newer Kindles, Sony eReaders, Nook, iPhone, iPad and of course any desktop or laptop computer. (So far, unfortunately, tablets running Android cannot read pdf files embedded in a website--we're hoping a patch will be created soon.) Every subscriber will have access to an electronic version of every issue for the duration of his or her subscription. Digital-only subscriptions are available for $56 to residents outside the United States: http://geniistore.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=35&product_id=57 If you are a subscriber and haven't sent us your e-mail address yet, please do so to: genii@geniimagazine.com). More Remarkable Magic # 52 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) Choosing your material. I recently wrote a column that gave my thoughts on finding the right style to maximize your impact as a magician. It didn't touch on a parallel aspect of your performance and its potential success. If you have got all the style in the world it doesn't mean much if you don't wrap it around some quality material, otherwise it falls into the 'all style but no substance' category. You might be a stylish performer but like the 80's TV commercial---"Where's the Beef?" Beef is a great source of protein and protein is what keeps your body really ticking along. If you are a magician it is job #1 to perform good magic. If you are a comedy magician it is your job to amuse your audience while performing good magic. It is necessary to perform strong magic while entertaining your audience. I am all too familiar with the oft quoted, "First and foremost you need to be an entertainer." Duh, isn't that a given fact? I guess not when I think about a few of the magicians I have seen perform! Are there times when a visual gag or magical 'trifle'can be inserted into your show to adjust the pacing and change the tone of your act? Of course, they are like the sorbet they serve between the courses in a fancy meal at a fine restaurant. They don't replace the protein--they just enhance it by refreshing the palate. You wouldn't sit down in a ritzy restaurant and order 6 different kinds of sherbet or sorbet as your entire meal. I have seen many comedy magicians who seem to think that this is acceptable. Just because you are performing a comedy magic act it doesn't mean that you should present the magical equivalent of a sorbet buffet. In order to really create a strong comedy magic show you need two things. 1 Strong comedy. 2 Strong magic. If you don't balance these two items you are shortchanging your audience. Worse still you are beginning to fall into one of the only entertainer categories held in lower respect in the industry than a magician--a prop comic. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh! I will let you take a moment or two to register the enormity of this scary prospect. The next thing to happen is the airline loses your case and ZAP--you are a mime. I will change the tone of this column before anyone falls into a deep depression. There is very little emotion involved in a lay audiences reaction to magicians. David Copperfield is one of the few magicians who created some real emotion with his material and the way he presented it. Yes, I do realize that I put that in the past tense. In his TV specials David created emotions using visuals, music, movement, strong magic and then he tied them up in a tasty package using the skills of talented technicians who were able to film the tricks and make mini-movies out of them. When you compare notes with musical acts about DVD sales after performances (which is the real nitty gritty of what performers really like to discuss) it is a humbling experience to discover how much more product they shift! The reason usually has nothing to do with the quality of the performers, it has to do with the emotion they invoke. Believe me you will never, ever hear a potential customer say, "Oh, we must buy that DVD--you remember we saw the Torn & Restored Newspaper on our honeymoon." It does, however, work that way with a music CD that includes a song that the couple heard on that same honeymoon. This is why the heart of my comedy magic show is an unabashedly nostalgic and emotion filled version of the Gypsy Thread. It is the emotional sorbet in my show that makes the funny stuff seem even funnier. It just makes for a much better entertainment package to deliver to the most important element of your show, the invisible folks who are sitting out front in the dark. What are the other elements that create strong magical material for you to 'beef up' your show? What are the easiest pitfalls to avoid? Well, I have some thoughts on that too, but that is going to be the subject of my next column. Oh, what a tease I am! On my blog I have quite a stockpile of other musings and thoughts on the performance of comedy and magic I would be delighted if you checked it out. You can find the blog (and while you are there, why not click the RSS tab and then you will receive notification of new entries on a regular basis) at www.remarkablemagic.com As always feel free to drop me an email at nicklewin26@gmail.com -------------------------------------------- 6. A Tough Choice - #226 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com I was recently at a festival event and was packing up the show when out of the corner of my eye, I see a lady with a young child walking towards me with a smile on her face. Always being in the professional mode, I smiled back and stopped what I was doing to address myself to her. She was wondering when the show was going to start and was excited about it. I immediately felt bad inside as I knew my last show was over and I was packing up to go home. I was feeling really sick with a bad head cold and just really wanted to get home and rest after being there most of the afternoon. But then it dawned on me as it often does. I realized what I told myself when I left the house that morning. I promised myself that sick or not sick, I was NOT going to give anything less than 100% effort on all shows. I was not going to allow my feeling lousy to change the way I do things or how I present a show to anyone and everyone. Although I was done and I did my contracted time, I had a decision to make. I had a decision to make much like all of us do at times. That decision is to stick to my contract and just say I am sorry, apologize and head home. Certainly nothing wrong with that. I would have been nice, polite and done what I was told to do. However, the little voice inside of me realized that is NOT good enough. This person came over and came to the festival to see a magic show. It is not her fault that maybe she read the show times wrong or maybe someone told her the wrong times. No matter what the reason, I had a choice. I had a choice to either ignore the situation or do what I thought was right. Suddenly at that very moment I was taken back in time. I was a kid again and I was at a summer camp approaching a magician to say thanks and ask how I could get started in magic. I recall he was also packing up. But I remember that old man taking the time out to talk to this young boy. THAT conversation sparked my interest in the art of magic. That man did NOT have to spend time for me....but he did. He did not have to stop what he was doing, delay his departure to show a genuine interest in ME...but he did. I suddenly realized the ONLY solution right in my mind was to perform for that young girl. I went back and got my jacket on and put back on my prop bag. I walked back out of the tent and spent 15 minutes performing a private show for that girl and for her mom. As I performed the girl smiled ear to ear and laughter filled the air. Her giggles made me laugh and her smile was contagious. As much as I was working magic for her, she worked magic for me. I saw myself in her and I realized that magic and my performance meant something to her even if she may not have been able to express it in words. I shook her hand and I began to stand up. I looked over at the mother wiping tears from her eyes as she mouthed to me a huge "THANK YOU!". The eye contact and the expression on her face was all I really saw as she did not speak a word. She looked at her child and looked at me and smiled ear to ear. She walked away and as she turned I could hear her daughter saying how she got to meet the magic man and how cool it all was. You know, we can be sick and we can be tired. We can have things we would rather do and places we would rather be. We certainly do not have to do more than what is asked of us. But you know, we are magicians. We are lucky to have an art form where we CAN make a difference in the life of a child. I have no idea if I was the first magician this young girl ever saw. However, I can sleep better tonight knowing that I made that day for that young girl. I can rest easy knowing that 15 minutes was worth it to that parent. We all have a gift and we have a gift far greater than most of us know. Next time you have a situation like this, I hope that you will choose to take just a few more moments of your time to reach out and share the gift of magic to someone else. For without our audiences, what are we really. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. - "Blue and Gold! Tony Brook In Conversation With Jon Racherbaumer - Part 2 -------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA Part 2 ADB: I read somewhere that since you were very young man you've always had a secret fear of performing? Is this true and, if so, is it still true? JR: Dread is a better word; and it was not very "secret." as any perfectionist knows, there are an infinite number of things that can go wrong.especially onstage. Secondly, I prefer to improvise a lot and dislike rehearsing behavioural things-not the tricks, which must be rehearsed-but what I say and do. These are reactionary things, directly obtained from the unpredictable behaviour of spectators. This of course is a scary proposition and, yes, it still makes me edgy and nervous. However, this is a source of energy, as well. I like to say that "a magician is a reactor playing the part of a magician". ADB: Yes I totally understand .I am , like you , rather fond of not rehearsing the behavioural things and so I know exactly what you mean . but please amplify . JR : In the Don Alan book I wrote (quoting Don): "spontaneity requires a lot of rehearsal". However, having to speak lines verbatim from a scripted performance is like wearing a psychological straitjacket. I would rather work from a predetermined premise or outline. This leaves "room" to make minor adjustments and improvise within that roomy leeway. Working close-up is like being on a blind date with someone you wouldn't mind marrying. ADB: Share with us your thoughts about your kind of performance and your views on how magic should be performed. JR: Hmmm! Alright . Putting stage magic aside, close-up magic should be gloriously intimate and vitally interactive. The "fourth wall" is non-existent and, to me, performing is not what I do, but about what happens with spectators and for audiences. It is about forming a momentary, memorable relationship. It is about making the audience, in some meaningful measure, love what you obviously love. This is less abstract than it sounds. Imagine the same challenges facing a lover about to woo someone he desires. There is a strange combination of fear and daring at work. In short, I want them to remember an emotional experience, not an intellectual one. I want them to care about what they experienced and see some relevance - no matter how slight - to their life. ADB: You once told me that actions speak louder than words and that you often like to perform silently. Tell me more about this. JR: Yes, I did Tony..which brings us back to stage work. There my goal was to re-enact an action sequence that would have the look and feel of a dream. The "magic" had to be remarkably visual and surreal, dramatic and illogical.it had to be beautiful to watch because of its hypnotic and otherworldly aspects. Patter (speaking words) interferes with casting this kind of spell. Beautiful music, however, can lift audiences onto the dream-waves being created by the "magic". Besides, when you are on stage and hear the music yourself, it inspires you to reach for all the transcendent moments that then seem within your reach. I wanted to reify what I saw and felt watching Channing Pollock, Neal Foster, and Cardini as a youngster.they transported me to an alternate universe. ADB: Yes indeed ..transcendent ..an alternative Universe ..When you were 11 years old you entered a contest and even at that tender age and too young to shave, you had your own beard made from your own hair. There was a very special lady involved. Elaborate a little on that story, please. JR: It was a pet-hobby parade that was judged in the end on the basis of costumes. The special lady you mention was my mother, who was a thespian and make-up artist. She always went all out. I won several Halloween costume contests.masquerading as raggedy Ann and little black sambo (which was politically correct in those days). My face and hands were black, my hair was black and nappy, and I wore rimless glasses. When she made me up as a magician, rather than use a fake beard, my mother used hair from my head and attached it to my chin with spirit gum. The whole process took hours. Devin Knight Lecture - Tampa, Florida -------------------------------------------- Message by Mark Wroblewski A Knight To Remember Only A Week Away! Register Today!! When: September 22nd, 2011 7:00PM Cost: Only $10.00 Where: The Magic Emporium 4429 Gunn Highway, Tampa, Florida 33618 Devin Knight is regarded as one of magic's most prolific inventors. He is also a highly sought after lecturer for both magicians and mentalists. Most of his effects are runaway best sellers and have received rave reviews. Devin was a protégé of the late Al Mann and currently works as a full-time magician and mentalist. Devin strives to create effects that not only fool magicians, but at the same time are easy to do. The majority of his effects rely more on clever ideas, rather than difficult sleights. This puts most of his effects within the skill range of most magicians. This will be one of the BEST lectures of the year and should NOT be missed! Here is what the best are saying about Devin I've admired Devin for more years than I care to remember! That he is "clever" is an understatement. Devin I the REAL deal! - Larry Becker Devin Knight's lecture is a grass roots festival of practical, ready to amuse magic, based on primal principles and subtle simplicities. Be prepared to be pleased. Jon Racherbaumer Here are the contents for Lecture 2; A Knight To Remember: Tri-Sight: Magician shows 3 prediction envelopes numbered 1-3. A spectator selects 3 cards from a deck and places them into 3 other envelopes. He also chooses a number to be written on each envelope. The predictions match exactly. No-Touch CAAN: Devin's approach to the most popular effect in card magic. In a deck that the magician never touches is found a freely selected card at a freely chosen number. No Skill, no gaffed decks and 100% hands off. Retro-Gravity: Revealed in the lecture. How to gimmick your shoes so you can levitate a few inches off the ground anywhere at any time. Gyrater: Cause a borrowed card case to float up and revolve 360 degrees in air. No threads or magnets. Case is borrowed and can be examined afterwards. Kiss Trick: The first trick Devin put on the market back in 1976. A lady blows a kiss toward the deck and her kiss mark appears on the back of a freely selected card. The kiss mark visibly change into a real candy kiss she can keep. Psychoportation: An effect that has been getting rave reviews in the magazines and fully explained. A person's driver's license is sealed in one envelope and then teleports into another envelope across the stage. Almost self working and a real fooler as you can't have a duplicate of the person's license. Worth the price of the lecture. Word Sight: Two people just think of words off a word list of over 200 words. They write nothing down at any time. They say nothing, they look up their words in ANY dictionary. With no fishing or any kind the performer tells them the words they are thinking of. This has fooled some of the smartest minds in magic. Ink-Portation: Spectator signs any blue back card, NO FORCE. Magician shows a blank face red back card and seals it into an envelope. He then makes the person's signature vanish from the playing card and appear on the red back card sealed in an envelope across the stage. Baffling beyond words. Unshop: A comedy effect in which a spectator goes on a mental shopping spree and decides to return an item. The performer shows a prediction and removes a photo revealing the object he returned. 100% commercial and a big laugh getter. Easy to make up at home. Double Clip Line: A great improvement on the old clip line. Two columns of paper are shown and the performer clips away from both the top and bottoms until the audience says stop. He has predicted both the top and bottom lines. Will fool anyone who knows the original. Autobend Silverware: Devin's self-bending spoon. He shows you how to make it in about 5 minutes. The spoon is shown freely, visibly bends in half at your finger tips with no hand movement and then breaks in half. Important!! I encourage everyone to pre-purchase tickets online. The $10.00 in advance will include a $10.00 credit for a purchase at the Magic Emporium. Tickets will still be $10.00 at the door but will not be available for the credit offer.
