Soon after Mark and Nani finished the Magic Land of Allakazam, they began pitching more television shows. The result of their hard efforts became 6 annual landmark Television Specials, The Magic Circus, redefining how magic is presented on TV. Before Henning and Copperfield, Mark Wilson once again raised the bar. The beautiful use of color, the unique "overhead" camera, the live audience that often sat "in the round", and so much more, made the Magic Circus Specials the cutting edge shows of its day. Sponsored by Pillsbury, the show is often remembered for the adorable transitions where Mark interacted with the Pillsbury Doughboy. What is not well known is that up to that time, the Doughboy only came to life through stop motion animation. Mark and his team developed a magical way that the little mascot could react in a "live" way with no visible operator! This November 14 to the 20th, the Magic Castle will celebrate the wonderful accomplishments of Mark Wilson's Magic Circus in the Palace of Mystery! Cleverly called, "Magic Circus Week," Greg Wilson will bring back this iconic show from the 70s. Greg fondly remembers making his debut TV performance at the tender age of 6 on the Magic Circus. He literally grew up with the show, appearing on many of the 6 one hour Specials. Greg plans on sharing as much as he can from his parents collection, just as he did for Allakazam Week. Magic Circus Week will be another "once in a lifetime" event that people will be talking about for years to come. Even if you were not around in the 70s, or have not seen the Magic Circus videos, this week at the Castle will prove to be a fantastic retrospective of one of the most innovative transformations of the image of magic and illusions from the 20th Century. Please join us in celebrating this 40th Anniversary event at the Magic Castle -------------------------------------------- 3. Sweden's Only Museum Of Magic --------------------------------------------- Message by Christina Nyman (Sweden) President Magica Club Lëtzebuerg/Luxembourg One man, one passion, thousands of magical artifacts. If it wasn't for the dedicated work of Christer Nilsson (stage name Christer el Ricco) most of Scandinavia's magic history would probably have been long forgotten and wrapped in mystery. At first sight this private museum might appear small in surface, but that is just an illusion. A visit to "Sveriges Magi-Arkiv", the Swedish Magic Archive, is a fascinating experience. Mr Nilsson knows the story behind every item in his vast collection: Who manufactured this magic prop? How does it work? To whom did the item belong? During which period and where did the magician in question perform? Everything is documented and the collection consists of magic props, books, posters, newspaper clippings etc, etc. The amazing thing is that no magician is too small or too big to feature in the collection. Here you can find everything from autogram cards for local active magicians to historical Royal Letters nominating court performers. Christer Nilsson's lifelong interest in magic started with a children's magic set and the opportunity to witness a performance of a famous magician. In 1949 Christer started doing public shows together with his future wife Gertrud. Christer Nilsson is a man that over the years has earned great appreciation from laypeople, but also numerous honorary merits from magical associations. And he surely deserves it. Christer Nilsson promotes the art of magic from many different angles. Some examples: Organiser of several magic conventions, editor for the bulletin of the Swedish Magic Circle for 23 years, author of reference books on Swedish magicians. Since 10 years he edits and writes the most important magic news blog in Scandinavia with several daily updates. And yes, of course he still adds to his collection. The collection/The Swedish Magic Archive is to be found in Nyköping, 62 miles southwest of Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. I know from personal experience that Christer and Gertrud are delighted to show their collection to visiting magicians with a serious interest in the art of magic. If you are visiting Sweden drop Christer Nilsson a line - and if he is available you have a couple of captivating hours to look forward to. Christer Nilsson's blog: http://magiarkivet.se/ -------------------------------------------- 4. Movie About Florida Illusionist -------------------------------------------- Message by Dennis Phillips Florida Illusionist Mark O'Brien's new Movie, "Walking Through Fires", Mark O'Brien's, Florida based illusionist's film, Walking Through Fires centers on Mark's true life story. It is as real as you can get. No Hollywood smoke and mirrors, no re-writes and big name production army and no A list cast. It is a micro-budget film although it looks like a much bigger budget film. Mark's film centers on his loss of a half-million dollar's worth of illusions burned in his Orlando warehouse in two suspicious fires five days apart. Classified to this day as arson by the Insurance investigator, many believe the fires were set to thwart Mark's attempt to open his magic attraction in Orlando. But the real story and "relevance" is that his film sheds light on the way things really are in show business. His very personal film depicts the events before during and after the fires and the damage to his career, family, friends and mental health. The film is enlightening, educational, moving, disturbing and inspiring as covers so much of what life is all about. Justice, corruption, family, career, friendship and magic are all examined within the film's complex structure. In spite of this tragedy, Mark remains a busy World Class Illusionist and has developed into a very good film producer-director. This is one micro-budget that every magician should see as it will beg them to ask not only why they perform magic but what they find important in their own lives outside of their crazy profession, hobby or obsession. And they may even ask themselves why Mark O'Brien would spend five years and a great deal of his own money to tell his story in a film. I wonder if Hollywood could have told Mark's story any better? So who the heck is Burt Wonderstone? He is a fictitious character and you can expect to see Steve Carell star as "Wonderstone" in the magician comedy film, titled Burt Wonderstone. That big budget movie is centered on the world of Las Vegas magicians, with Carell playing a traditional performer who gets a rival in the form of "a hip younger illusionist," which leads to him having to "find a way to rediscover his love for magic." According to some press articles, Wonderstone accidentally kills his partner and must regain his "hocus-pocus focus" while simultaneously competing with a rival. New Line is planning to shoot this month. According to IMDB, the film was purchased in 2006. This is the same year that production began on Mark O'Brien's micro-budget indie. Thus you may have two films about illusionists coming out at the same time again. Dejavu - like when The Prestige and The Illusionist came out at the same time. Those films were very similar but these films are very different in many ways. To see clips from the film and check on the release information you can visit the official site: http://www.walkingthroughfires.com Aside from purchasing the DVD or renting it when it becomes available, please support Mark and the real world of independent film making by visiting the film's Facebook fan page and clicking the "like" button. http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/pages/Walking-Through-Fires/150988531636061 You Tube is also filled with classic clips of some of Mark's television and live show appearances. You will love the creative illusions on many of Mark's Nickelodeon network TV shows! http://www.youtube.com/user/WalkingThroughFires If you are searching for relevance in a magic film or even in your life you may find it in Walking Through Fires. If you are looking for comedy then let's hope Wonderstone delivers as much bang as Walking Through Fires does for the buck! -------------------------------------------- 5. New Al Koran Book - Al Koran The Unique Years -------------------------------------------- Message from Martin Breese (UK) The new Al Koran book - Al Koran the Unique Years arrived in stock yesterday and that considerably more than one quarter of the books printed have already been sold. Nick Lewin gave the book a fantastic review in your magazine and I am sure that many of the sales are a result of what he had to say to your readers. Anyone who would like to order can do so by visiting my website: www.abracadabra.co.uk -------------------------------------------- 6. More Remarkable Magic # 55 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) Closing the show and related topics. OK, you have been reading my mini series of columns about performing then you realize I am currently talking about the structure of a show and choice of material. Incidentally, if you are reading my columns why not drop me a quick email and say "Hi." It makes it so much easier to judge what kind of articles people enjoy and to frame the columns accordingly. On an entirely different note, I am going to have to reschedule my appearance at the Magic Castle this November. Our move from Las Vegas to Los Angeles is taking a lot longer than I expected. Much as I was looking forward to getting to perform in the Close-Up Gallery (I have been practicing my double lift diligently!) the revamping of our LA house is taking a lot longer than I ever thought. The thought of camping out in a house that is having tiles and flooring being laid and bathrooms re-constructed rather dampens my anticipated fun! I will be appearing, however, with my favorite bunch of East Coast magicians on October 24th at Monday Night Magic in New York. I performed there fairly recently and had a blast and I am really looking forward to returning. To complete the last two articles let's talk about that all-important closing to the show. This is where you collect up all the threads you have thrown out during the show and bind them together into a braided cord in order to have a big finish. Here are a few basic thoughts about the final segment of your show. 1 Never, ever finish a show with a spectator onstage. It splits the attention of the audience and slows down/clutters the closing of the act. Like the opening of the show, this moment is about YOU, YOU, YOU! 2 Conventional wisdom (and I tend to agree with it) says that it is a mistake to finish with a trick that causes the audience to have to think too much or leaves them so amazed that they forget to applaud. 3 It really doesn't hurt to have a highly visual item at the end of the show. Much of the same rules that I applied to the opening of the show apply to the closing, except now the audience know who you are and what you do - it is nice to wrap it all up in a pretty package to finish your act. 4 False calls are a bit of a clique these days in a variety act. There is nothing more 'icky' than watching a performer begging like a dog and asking the audience, "One more?" However there is much to be said for packing two tricks together to create a very strong closing to the show. In my formal/full show I almost always close on a combination of the Multiplying Bottles and the Elmsley Newspaper Tear. The bottles is a great closer and supplies lots of fast flash and visual impact and then when it looks like I am all done I go into the Elmsley Tear which really brings the action back into my hands, gets them looking at my face and displays obvious physical skill and then as the applause is starting to peak I actually close with the Jumping Stool, which kicks up the applause another notch just when you need it. 5 Make sure you know how to take a bow. One of the most important lessons I was ever taught was how to take a really professional bow at the end of the show. There are dozens of great tips you can learn watching quality pros taking their curtain call; even if some of them have become a little too obvious (even to lay audience) such as turning up the house lights to help achieve a standing ovation. 6 Please never say anything that includes the words standing ovation to 'coax' the audience into standing. There are some great ways to do this, but...... they have all been done to death over the years. Let's not be tacky. As an added thought here, PLEASE don't do the snowstorm trick and tell the audience you did it for a dying boy who had never seen snow. There are about four magicians doing this on the cruise ship circuit and it does more to lower professional bookers/entertainers opinion of magicians than anything else I know. So in the last couple of weeks I have given you my thoughts on shaping your material into a strong show. Here are a few caveats to my observations that should be too obvious to mention, but... In all my columns I speak entirely for myself - which is something I am uniquely qualified to do! There are exceptions to everything I have said and there are many roads to Rome. However, before you start breaking 'rules' it pays to know what the 'rules' are so you're not just doing it out of ignorance. Oh, and make it look like you're having fun onstage. Audiences love that, even if it isn't true! Drop me an email at nicklewin26@gmail.com -------------------------------------------- 7. Laughter Is Contagious - #229 Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com Many of us have experienced good shows and we have had our share of bad ones as well. The good shows tend to be so because the audience is just loving everything we do. The clapping is louder and every routine and builds from start to finish. The laughter fills the room. The more they react, the more we feed off of it. However, the bad shows work the exact opposite. It seems like nothing we do can jump start the response. We tend to go through the motions and ponder what really is going on. The laughter is not there. The audience doesn't feel like clapping and you strive to just get through it the best that you can. Now there are MANY reasons why this happens and this article will not attempt to answer them all. However, I want to talk about something that most of us take for granted or forget about entirely. Have you ever heard the phrase "Laughter is the best medicine?" I am sure many of us have. Simply put. Laughter is contagious. If you are in a room with people laughing, it is hard not to start laughing yourself. You may not even realize why. Laughter is also a "feel good" response. You do not tend to laugh if you are in a bad mood or not enjoying yourself. Laughter can then mean good times and enjoyment. So how can we as performers learn from this? Well what it comes down to is making sure you are enjoying the show you are putting on for the audience. If you want your audience to react favorably to what you present, you have to first enjoy it yourself. It does not matter how many shows you already had that day. It doesn't matter how tired you may be or how sick you feel. If you are a professional, you are one every time out ... no exceptions. You must get your mind to remember that every show you give 100% effort. You must not forget that there may be a child seeing a magician for the first time and you are it. YOU set the example. So when you arrive at the event, you must put a smile on your face and present a pleasant attitude. People are evaluating you the moment you arrive, not just when the show starts. First impressions are everything and so you want to make that impression last. If you look miserable, then why should the audience engage with you during the show? If you are not smiling, then why should they? An audience can tell if you are going through the motions. Watch any seasoned entertainer and you start to realize just how much they draw the audience in from the moment they hit the stage. You may not have any real idea what is happening, but you are drawn inwards toward them and enjoying everything that happens. One simple reason for this is simply the fact that the entertainer looks like he/she is having the time of their life. They look like they LOVE what they do. You cannot help yourself but to feed off of this. They walk on stage with head held high and have a demeanor of confidence. They smile wide, give great eye contact and they have the ability to laugh at themselves and not take things so seriously. When done well, you enjoy them before anything is even really presented. The key is that they are selling themselves and their personality. They are not relying on their instruments or props alone. They know that to make an audience react favorably, they must be the tool in which to do it. So the next time you arrive at an event, make sure to smile and to have a pleasant personality. Show them you enjoy doing what you do. I guarantee it will make a difference. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. - "Blue and Gold! Tony Brook In Conversation With Jon Racherbaumer - Part 5 -------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA ADB: You've been a magic wordsmith and magician for some 50 years and you must have some amazing stories and experiences. Is there any one or two that you could paraphrase in a couple of sentences? JR: Meeting Marlo, Chan Canasta, and Tony Slydini, and watching them create extraordinary things with ordinary objects were "stories" unto themselves. Performing for the Governor and mafia leader in the same state, (Louisiana) in the same year, was also amazing. The former is going to prison; the latter spent time in prison. I also performed 3-card Monte for Rupert Murdoch, the gazillionaire media mogul. (I let him win.) And discussed conjuring with Canadian novelist-poet, Margaret Atwood. I had the pleasure of sharing an Italian meal prepared by Francis Ford Coppola. I recently shared another meal and glorious conversation with French film director, Betrand Tavenier. Talking about all this smacks of shameless name-dropping, but I have found myself in the company of many gifted people without having sought them out. Most of these meetings just magically happened. I feel enormously lucky and privileged. ADB: Shameless name -dropping . Jon perish the thought . it is exactly what I've asked and you kindly shared . . Would it fair question Jon to ask if there have been influences .? JR: Of course .As a youngster I loved watching Channing Pollock, Cardini, and Don Alan perform, each for different reasons. Later, I was bowled over watching Tony Slydini, Albert Goshman, Eddie Fields, and of course Ed Marlo. I learned a lot about subtlety and psychology from Eddie Fields and I learned all about advanced cardmanship and technique from Marlo. In fact, Marlo had a profound influence on me. As far as literary influences are concerned I must cite Martin Gardner, John Northern Hilliard, Walter Gibson, Ted Annemann, Bruce Elliott, P. Howard Lyons, and Victor Farelli. ADB: Eddie Fields , Ed Marlo . I know they hold more than a passing interest . What type of magic do you most enjoy watching? JR: There is not a category or particular genre that I prefer, but I enjoy any performance, which is intimately interactive. That is, the audience must be an integral part of the performance and a certain degree of improvisation must be present. THE BUZZ WORD RIGHT NOW IS "IMMERSIVE." This usually occurs in a close-up milieu. Also, I prefer magic that uses commonplace properties. In other words, do some extraordinary with the "ordinary." ADB: What type of magic do you least enjoy watching? JR: I'm not fond of "epic magic" or "grand illusions" in Las Vegas and other glitzorama places, "size matters" the bigger, the better. However, as soon as they pump up the volume, turn on the fog machines, set off the pyrotechnics, and wheel-on the big boxes, I need a snooze-alarm to stay awake. Therefore, I do not enjoy illusionists and find almost anything televised to be inferior to live performance. As technology takes us to new heights and fantastic places, magic will be hard-pressed to compete with future virtual realities. End of Part 5 -------------------------------------------- 9. The Innovention Is Back! -------------------------------------------- Message by Paul Stone (US) After the Innovention 2010 Convention in October 2010 it was never my intention to produce another one but, because so many people have asked me to reconsider, I've decided to produce Innovention 2012 in Las Vegas, on October 1-4, 2012. Innovention 2012 will be at a new venue! We're delighted to announce that the Convention has moved to the Gold Coast Hotel & Casino, located next to the RIO and across from the Palms and very close to the Las Vegas 'Strip'. The Gold Coast Hotel & Casino has an attractive Cabaret style Showroom, excellent meeting rooms and comfortable accommodation. (We've been able to negotiate a truly fantastic room rate of just $40 plus tax for Premium Rooms - Single or Double occupancy for Innovention Delegates!). All the facilities are conveniently located, so there's no need to walk miles to every session! And, if you want to visit the 'Strip', it is close by. October is a great time of year to be in Las Vegas. Flights are inexpensive and the weather is perfect! What makes the Innovention 2012 so different? Here are a just a few of the many reasons: . The number of attendees is limited to 275 . Outstanding talent . Surprise guests . Innovative Lectures and Workshops . Best technical production of any Magic Convention . Unbeatable accommodation room rates . Superb location . Great value for money So this is the one convention you simply must attend in 2012! We will not be announcing until much nearer the Convention who will be appearing, but what we will guarantee is an unrivalled high quality, exciting and magical few days with outstanding performers and lecturers, and a few surprises too! As you have already attended either a Convention or Show that I have produced, you'll know that Innovention 2012 will be a first class event. But don't take our word for it. Here are a just a few Testimonials from people who attended Innovention 2010. 'It was obvious instantly that Paul Stone had done a superb job of re-inventing the standard magic convention. Paul's many years producing top league corporate shows was very evident and everyone attending the event seemed delighted with this one of a kind gathering of magicians. Paul did a first rate job and with lectures by performers such as Criss Angel and Teller, he raised the bar for all such future events'. Nick Lewin 'We're still re-living every moment of the fabulous time we had at your extraordinary Innovention' Convention'. Don Wiberg 'What a great time we had at your Convention'. Tom Mullica ------------------------------------------- 10. Update On The Magical 1 Malaysia Festival -------------------------------------------- Message by Jay Scott Berry The Magical 1 Malaysia Festival continues to gather momentum with more acts being announced plus an international cast of VIPs. From March 23rd through 25th, 2012, over a dozen of the world's finest magicians will appear in Kuala Lumpur for an event that promises to be the largest celebration of wonder ever held in SE Asia. In addition to the growing cast of magicians, we have lined up a host of VIPs from around the world to represent FISM and the Magic Castle. More details will be released on that next week. For now, I am very happy to announce the addition of Christopher Hart to our all-star cast. Christopher is an internationally renowned, award-winning magician as well as the notorious "Thing" from the series of "Adams Family" films. He has twice won the coveted "Stage Magician of the Year" award from the Magic Castle and Princess Stephanie of Monaco personally awarded him the top prize at the "Grand Prix Magique" held in Monte Carlo. I have known Christopher for over 30 years since working with him at Hollywood Magic and we were both Junior Members of the Magic Castle. Like many of our stars, this will be his first appearance in Malaysia! Christopher will join Rafael Benatar, Dirk Losander, Richard Forget and Michael Ammar with many more international names to be announced. The Magical 1 Malaysia Festival will take place at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, a state-of-the-art facility located at the foot of the Iconic Petronas Twin Towers. All shows will take place in the Plenary Hall, which is a 4500 seat deluxe theatre. The audiences will be treated to 3 gala shows per day. There will be four additional magicians-only lectures by Michael Ammar, Dirk Losander, Rafael Benatar and another surprise guest. There will also be an extensive dealer's area, The Carnival of Wonders, with a dedicated stage and non-stop shows throughout the 3 day Festival. Unlike most magic conventions, where the dealers are secluded in a remote room, the Carnival will be held in and around the Plenary Hall, in the very heart of the action. Plus, the entire Carnival of Wonders is a free event ensuring a continuous parade of customers above and beyond those attending the main shows. Including the lay public, we fully expect over 10,000 visitors a day. Please note that our dealers booths are very limited and are selling out quickly.
